That's a pivotal passage for me, too, Dan. It's all about being there for the abundant beauty and grace everywhere. If you don't get out, you never experience it, and if you never experience it, you may become dulled to it.You may not know it when it hits. Sometimes I just creep through the woods, going from one wonder to the next.Yesterday was a paeon to woodpecker work. I think Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is my favorite book. Read at 29 or 30, it pulled me into the natural world as nothing before. Suddenly everything out there seemed important, worth knowing knowing about, even if sometimes horrifying. Giant water bug!

In the 30+ years since reading Pilgrim, most theology has made less and less sense to me. So I keep coming back to Dillard's mockingbird passage:

"The answer must be, I think, that beauty and grace are performed whether or not we will or sense them. The least we can do is try to be there."
