We're excited to introduce you to Summon, a discovery tool that allows you to search across all the collections of Libraries and Cultural Resources (Library, Archives, Museum) along with scholarly material from thousands of publishers. Our intention is to allow you to discover previously-hidden local resources that may be relevant to your research.

We're labeling it as a beta because we know it's got a ways to go, and that's where you come in. Please use Summon for your searches, and let us know what you like about it, and where it still needs work.

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the University of Calgary’s Information Commons, Michael Ridley will challenge us to look forward to a broader understanding of services for learners as we prepare to move into our new facility. The opening of the new Learning Commons in the Taylor Family Digital Library will see increased opportunities for academic engagement. At the University of Guelph, the Library, Computing and Communications Services, Office of Open Learning, Student Affairs and Teaching Support Services collaborate to support and enhance undergraduate and graduate student learning, writing, research, numeracy, and technology at their Learning Commons.

Following his presentation, Mr. Ridley will be joined on a panel by leaders from the University of Calgary for a question and answer session. Our objective is to stimulate discussion of 21^st century learning environments, the needs that must be addressed and what each of us can bring to enrich the environment.

Panellists from the UofC are:
Meg Martin, Vice President Academic, University of Calgary Students Union;
Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources) and University Librarian;
Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost (Students); and,
Harold Esche, Chief Information Officer.

About the Speaker:
Michael Ridley is Chief Information Officer and University Librarian, University of Guelph. Ridley holds degrees from the University of Guelph (BA), the University of New Brunswick (MA) and the University of Toronto (MLS). Previously he held positions at the University of Waterloo and McMaster University.
Ridley has served as President of the Canadian Association for Information Science, President of the Ontario Library Association, member of the Board of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and Chair of the Ontario Council of University Libraries. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers (CUCCIO).
In 2007 he was named "Academic Librarian of the Year" by the Ontario College and University Library Association (OCULA), a division of the Ontario Library Association (OLA). In 2008 he was awarded the newly renamed Larry Moore OLA Distinguished Service Award from the Ontario Library Association.

The Computer Journal is Changing

The Computer Journal is increasing its focus and frequency:

They launched their first specialist section, Section B: Networks and Computer Systems, in 2009, and will sharpen focus still further with the launch of Section C: Computational Intelligence early next year, with a change in frequency from 8 to 10 issues in 2010.

We will receive all three sections comprising of 10 issues from 2010.

Future developments:

This one has been in the works for a while.
Basically, one can search for graphics in the literature, such as tables, charts, illustrations, etc. :

"Deep indexing for tables, figures, graphs, charts and other illustrations from the scholarly research and technical literature.

"Deep indexing" categorizes data, variables and other content represented in tables, maps, photographs and other figures. Usually, indexing of research articles is done at a rather high, general level where only the key concepts of the work are represented by a dozen or so index terms. But by going deeper and specifically indexing the content associated with all the individual tables and figures, CSA Illustrata enables the researcher to find information that otherwise would not be retrievable in traditional, article-level and full-text indexing systems."

1. integration with RefWorks and EndNote (which will be very, very useful!)
2. printing from the QuickView screen (no more having to go to the Reader)

Libraries and Cultural Resources, the Teaching and Learning Centre and Information Technologies are pleased to present the annual Faculty Technology Days: Teaching and Learning with Technology, May 5-7, 2009. This 3 day event is open to all faculty and graduate students. There is no charge to attend Faculty Technology Days.

Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources and University Librarian), will kick-off FTD with a session on Convergence of Knowledge and Culture: our Design for the Future: the Taylor Family Digital Library. Tom will discuss how the Taylor Family Digital Library (scheduled to open in fall 2010) will bring together libraries, archives, museums, and the university press for the benefit of scholars. It will be a 21st century research facility in the heart of campus which will house a "collection of the future" integrating access to traditional print, museum, and archival materials. Come hear about the strategic plans and learn how the Taylor Library will embody a new campus prototype for learning, teaching and conducting research. There will be time for questions.

CISTI Source Discontinued as of April 1 (but Don't Panic)

The federal government is discontinuing CISTI Source as of this August. The Library's contract ends March 31 (the end of today), and we will not be renewing it.

Don't Panic: you can still request articles that you normally would have requested through CISTI Source using our Interlibrary Loan Request Form available at: http://library.ucalgary.ca/services/interlibrary-loan

After tomorrow, if you try to access CISTI Source, you'll see:
"The Federal Government is discontinuing CISTI Source as of August 2009.

Because of better interlibrary loan coverage and tools such as SFX, use of CISTI Source at the University of Calgary has declined dramatically since 2003. The Library decided not to renew our contract after March 31, 2009 for the last few months of CISTI Source’s existence. Please use the interlibrary loan form to request the scientific, medical and technical articles that you used to request with CISTI Source :
