Business in the village has suffered recently in general, partly because of the economy on the Coast where villages reliant upon restaurant trade & art and crafts like Benahavis feel the pinch as everyone tightens their purse strings...Sadly Louis' Gallery is no more, and Lily Kojman's Galeria de Artehavis looks to be following suit.
On a brighter note there is a small new gallery by the shop & David Marshall's is still going strong. For a village like Benahavis, home to so many talented & creative artists for so long, it would be a crying shame to see that aspect disappear. The Galeria Bar in Benahavis run by Terry & Sue showcases several local artists, and I urge residents & tourists alike to support local art. With so many new developments springing up and shortly completed, I am hoping to see them furnished with local art, furniture and pottery.

Well, Summer is clearly approaching fast. The village is getting livelier by the minute, kick-started by Semana Santa...Easter Week parades & brass bands etc.
Ambiente still not quite re-open yet...watch this space,
Benahavis Hills New Office in Avenida Andalucia has suddenly developed a large grey lion's head on the wall.
Late night haunt Bar Oriente too has closed, now.
The New Fogon de Aldea Restaurant is building a promising trade, helped along by superb food & fine service.
It appears that Burkhart has taken on a new chef for Amanhavis Restaurant (my favourite for many years), and though I wouldn't have thought it possible...the general verdict is food there is even better now!
Rumours are rife of a new supermarket for the village... I will let you know!

ADSL in Benahavis

As Telefonica do not seem capable of installing ADSL in the village due to a shortage of lines, do not expect to be able to get adsl for the foreseeable future. In response , telefonica is offering unlimited dial-up internet access for approximately 22 euros per month.

Driving From Estepona/ Gibraltar direction:

Signposted clearly Benahavis exit off N340 after El Presidente. Take exit, follow under the bridge and over roundabout passing the Repsol garage on your left hand side. The village is 7 km from that point.

From Malaga/Marbella direction:

Follow the N340 through San Pedro de Alcantara, under the Marbella arch. there is a large, clearly signposted Exit overhead to Benahavis where the road veers to the right. Straight over the roundabout following the road for 7km.

To reach Benahavis centre: At the castle fountain roundabout at the foot of Benahavis, take the 2nd turn heading uphill & follow the road 1km. Parking is limited in town, some under the Church in carpark (free) and very little in town, so you are advised to park in the designated spaces either side of the road & walk up. The streets are narrow & difficult to turn if you come into the village...be warned.

To reach Benahavis Gran Hotel Benahavis, Regidor Hills etc: Either take the right hand turn at the foot of the village (rounadbout contains a fountain shaped like a castle) and follow the road around, or continue uphill to the Sando Inmobiliaria Show house & flags then turn right (downhill). Parking is adequate at the bottom of the village.

3 New Speed Traps in Malaga

Fixed radar is now operating at three points on the Costa del Sol

Just before Christmas there were 41 such spots all over Spain, to rise to 127 in the new year;

POSITIONS OF RADARS:
km 200.4
km 204.8
and km164.

They are the points on the A-7, the Mediterranean Motorway, where the Traffic Department has installed fixed radar, which started to record drivers over the speed limit on December 22nd.
The first of the new points is at kilometre 200.4 at La Cala de Mijas, by La Butibamba venta, going in the direction of Cadiz. Close by is the second one, at kilometre 204.8, near Fuengirola, going in the Malaga direction. The third is at kilometre 164.25, between Benahavís and Estepona, also going in the Malaga direction.

Benahavis Village

Benahavis is situated just 10 minutes from the Coast, an ancient white village set in the mountains of Andalucia, on a virgin natural environment. The name derives from the Moors...Ben (meaning "son of") and Havis (who ruled over the region from Montemayor Castle).

Still a small village, the many restaurants have received much acclaim over the past decade and tourists flock of an evening to dine in the plaza or many haunts dotted around the narrow mountain streets.

Individual Village Police Will Control Water Abuse

Local police are to be used in the control of the abusive use of water during the current drought conditions in Spain It applies in the towns listed in the regional government’s drought decree which have all now been asked to draw up a water emergency plan within the next two months.

A new commission will keep an eye on the situation in the municipalities of Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Álora, Benahavís, Benalmádena, Cártama, Casares, Coín, Estepona, Fuengirola, Istán, Málaga, Manilva, Marbella, Mijas, Ojén, Pizarra and Torremolinos. Three representatives of the regional government and three from Central government will also sit on the new commission.
