So, where was I?

I stood on the subway platform at 57th and Seventh yesterday, and when the N pulled into the station I found myself staring through the car door at a stylish man in jeans and brown suede boots, a denim jacket with embroidered patches reflecting extensive travels, a well-worn messenger bag, and a tweedy newsboy cap. And half a thick mustache.

The left half.

That's his left.

Sardine experiment

A few weeks ago, I tried out tinned sardines on an open-faced sandwich for lunch. Success! I've read several articles encouraging the consumption of sardines and other small fish because they provide essential fatty acids while containing less mercury and being more ecologically sustainable than other fish species. I can totally imagine eating a sardine sandwich once or twice a week. Mine was on sunflower-flax bread from the farmer's market with dill-lemon-caper mayo.

Sadly, I cannot report such success on the tinned smoked oyster front. I tried, but the gummy texture and sweet, smokey smell made me gag. Sadness! I will not be going there again.

I still have a tin of kippers in the pantry, but as they are smoked as well, I am a little leery...

Polo picnic

Governors Island (no apostrophe, please) opened the 2009 summer season today with a polo match featuring international hotties Prince Harry and Ignacio "Nacho" Figueras and benefiting Sentebale, the charity co-founded by Prince Harry and Lesotho's Prince Seeiso to protect HIV/AIDS orphans and impoverished children in the tiny African nation.

And it's all well and good to get everyone out of the concrete jungle for a picnic but I say BRING ON THE MAN CANDY!

I've been having some success tending succulents in my living room window, so I splurged ($15!) on this architectural twin-stemmed beauty. Which Gemma promptly chomped. Now one stalk is, well, just that. Evidence of the carnage on the windowsill below, also in piles of purple cat vomit all over the apartment.

The return of the wowtfit

I know you've been waiting with bated breath for another
wowtfit. This one sort of puts that September ensemble to shame.

Here's what you can't tell from the picture.

1) The two women, are sisters, possibly twins: same face, same figure, the one on the right a little taller. The woman on the left is actually quite fashionably dressed; I'll even excuse the earthy flat slides on account of her being quite tall. Righty, on the other hand, I'm cutting no slack at all. That outfit is criminal.
2) The top of the wowtfit is cropped. It barely covered her bosom. Her "pants", however, almost covered her bosom.
3) The charming "knicker" effect is produced by safety pins at the back of the knees.
4) Hiking boots.

I can only hope (and this might actually be the case) that these two will show up on a "Twinkies" episode of What Not to Wear. Ohgodplease.

I've been wanting a vase just this shape and size for I-don't-know-how-long, and I finally scored on etsy at Oak Bluffs Cottage Pottery. The texture and construction make it an almost perfect match to my favorite mug. Now it just needs some orange tulips, or maybe a happy bunch of daisies?
