Soundtrack was delivered to Jean Marc

Hi everyone

Latest update is I dropped off the film to Jean Marc (JFB) who's doing the soundtrack last Thursday.

I've also done a shout out to all musicians/producers who've expressed an interest or I asked whether they want to include music on the sountrack as well. I think it's going to come together nicely now, but I'll keep you updated.

Also - I just got an email from JQ, the graphic designer who's been working on the credits. He showed me the work, pre-animation, and it looks really cool.

Generally, I feel things are moving swiftly on again, and I hope to get another update out at the start of August.

Once the movie has been pulled together, I can send it on to Final Cuts to see if they'd be interested in screening it - I may send it pre-tweaking, just to get initial feedback. Then after that? Venues + publicity designed I hope!

Second hurdle cleared!!!

Hi everyone,

Good news. The sound edit is FINISHED. Jon's done a speedy job, finishing in less than a month. He's burned off all of the appropriate CDs for me, so now all that needs to be done is the soundtrack, checking on the fancy credits, getting the normal credits done, then piecing it all together.

Another update will come as to the progress of the soundtrack soon.

Final Cut

I've been in touch with Richard over at Final Cut with regards to screening the film. He said there might be a chance, I just have to pop the film over to him once it's done & they'll go from there. It would be very cool if they did screen it, either before the premiere or as the premiere.

Word on post-production

Well, I met with Jon, the sound editor, on Tuesday evening and he talked me through the process. He was very helpful, offering to render the files to a format Jean Marc could work with, and he estimates the sound work should take a month.

In the meantime, I'll be getting credits from JQ & Ben and ask JM to start working on the soundtrack.

I think (fingers crossed) that this is the final stretch!

New editor on board

Sorry for the long delay in updating the blog. The latest news is that the final edit should be done and that we have a new person on board for post-production: Jon Gray, a Brighton-based sound/audio person. He will be taking over the sound editing of the film. We're not sure how long this stage should take, but to be on the safe side, we're looking at July 06 for the absolute final deadline.

On other fronts, JQ & Ben are completing the opening credits. I can't wait to see the final results.

I'm planning on getting in touch with JFB regarding the soundtrack - hopefully, he can get started on that.

I think it's also time to start looking at publicity design. The end is in sight, and I'm sure the months will fly by. A premiere by this autumn would be supreme.

Final edit is imminent

I finally sent the editor, Martin, a list of all the final-final edits and stuff for sound design. Hopefully, in a month we'll have a final edit. Exciting stuff. The editing process has taken some time, with a lot of patience from Martin, so thanks for that.

Don't think we'll be finished in time for the End of the Pier Film Festival held in Bognor Regis, but maybe next year. Damn!

JQ & Ben have shown me some of their experiments for the credits. Stark lonely poignant pictures taken at locations unknown around Brighton. Also some wiggly animated credits that are a lot of fun.

Happy New Year!

I came back from the States last Saturday...still recovering from jetlag but I did manage to unpack my bags before collapsing into a heap, which is a first for me.

My trip bore fewer fruits than I anticipated, but I have to admit, it was hard not to get lulled into thinking of it as just an opportunity to relax. I did receive a very important phonecall while playing putt-putt golf...and no, that rabbit wasn't trying to hold me for ransom.

While in New York, I stopped in at K&M Camera on East 23rd, where I purchased 4 rolls of Super 8 film for supercheap, 2 in color and 2 in black & white, with the hopes of shooting some short films this year. I've already warned Hanneka of her imminent stardom.

I wasn't as lucky at making film contacts in NYC - to be perfectly honest, it was freezing, and even the thought of walking the few blocks to the subway station seemed like a nightmare.

However in Austin, I found a few small venues that already do film fests and a contact pointed out that South by Southwest now have a film festival alongside the music conference. Since it's happening 10-19th March 06, I probably won't be able to make the deadline for this year's, but definitely next year...if they'll have it!

Austin was t-shirt warm, pretty unbelievable, and I spent most of my time hiding in dirty bars playing pinball til my wrists ached.

Other things I picked up:
- Found
- Urb
- Exceptional toilet graffiti (featured pic is from Dobie Mall in Austin)
- A clapper board: On a shop exploration, I picked a new one up for $5 - previous films used and abused Mark Sandeman's, for which I'm deeply endebted to him.
- A 3-D Madonna (aka the Virgin Mary) mirror (don't ask!)

New York City, Part 1

It's mind-numbling cold here in New York, and it's only day 7 of my State-side visit.

How will I survive?

Warmth has come in the form of shared bottles of red wine, gossip about writers, and Maria's iTunes playlist, which has songs I haven't heard or thought of in a hundred years, perhaps for a good reason.

Let me share some of these gems, so you too can remember and love (or cringe):
"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" - Poison; "Send Me an Angel" - Real Life; "Hands to Heaven" - Breathe; "The Promise" - When in Rome; "Do The Hustle" - Van Mc Coy (whoops! that's one of mine!); "I Remember You" - Skidrow.

If anyone has one of these songs on their playlist, let me know and I'll bring something back for you. It will be good.

Checking in as promised, your loyal servant been combing the streets over the past six days for possible screening venues. It hasn't been easy.

Yesterday, for instance, I read about a performance art piece taking place in a disused department store window. I get to the address...

...only to find that it is the tiniest space in the world and I have found myself in a love-in.

The store window is covered in swathes of pink gauze and inside, the mood is set with red fur carpet, fairy lights, bowls of oranges, nuts, and at my feet, a pile of Hershey's kisses. The space is the creation of love artist Kathe Izze, whose performance is to love you. Seriously. Once a year, she's given rein at Harvey Nichols in London and gives individual shoppers love by appointment - and for free !

Sadly, though the space was warm and loving, it just wasn't big enough for more than six people (seated). Maybe 10.

Then, a few doors down, I found what was either a firestation or a really cool art gallery.

See the pictures in the middle of the photo? Those were three firefighters that died during Sept 11th.

Nope - scratch that one.

Me, Snoop & Madison Square Garden?

I don't think so.

Today, there are two independent films being screened and I have thoughts of going down to meet the promoters.

One is called "Unknown" and it's "an exciting new action-packed thriller" starring people who were in movies I have never heard of. It's being screened by The National Research Group. Hm. Maybe give that one a miss. I don't like thrillers anyway.

The other film is called "American Astronaut" and it's being presented by the Williamsburg Screening Series at the Galapagos Art Space in Williamsburg. Right around the corner from my old apartment.

The ad says the WSS takes place once a month. Have I hit pay or what? Only problem is, my film will never get a quote from the New York Times like this one did: "Nothing Short of Phenomenal!"

I wonder if I can bribe someone at NYT. Or maybe I can just use a quote from my mom.

More pictures and news to come. I've already investigated UA Village VI, Maria's bathroom, and the subway station at 59th and Lexington as potential locations, but obvious limitations apparent.

Other news: have you heard about the California death row convict, Stanley 'Tookie' Williams? He died this morning and was the 12th man to die in California since they reinstated the death penalty. This place is crazy. I'm glad I'm not in Australia, though.

My new camera

I love my new camera. It's a Nikon Coolpix P2: 5.1 megapixels, 3.5x zoom AND IT HAS WI-FI!

At $350, it was, to quote the irrepressible Mr Black, "cheap as chips". Or as they say here in the US of A, it was a steal.

Apologies for the blatant consumer-fuelled moment of pleasure - it's the first time I've owned a camera since I gave my last one to the Big Issue. I never spend money, so it's a big moment.

The plan for today is to head down to a shop beneath Canal to see if I can buy some Super 8 film stock.

Now if only I could get rid of the nagging feeling that I'm wearing my shoes on the wrong feet...is that possible?

Possible screenings

As mentioned below, the premiere will def be in Brighton, but there are some overseas possibilities for screenings. Open House in Berlin, an art/performance space I visited in October are up for the idea. Non Grata also put a film festival on every year in Estonia. I'm not really sure about the New York scene - my friend Georg screened his film at the Walter Reade Theatre, but I can assure you, that probably costs lots of $$ so scratch that one. I might look into screening at my friend's gallery in Krakow, program and whether the art gallery is still running dependant of course!

If you hear of any film festivals, toss the names my way!

first film, first posting

Hi everyone

This is the official site for the film, where I will hopefully add all developments surrounding the film. So far, I've received the second edit of the film from Martin at Junk TV (www.junk-tv.com). He's doing great work with it and I'm hoping to meet with him so we can agree all of the sound design work that will happen next.

Other aspects of post-production are on their way or will be soon. For the credits, I have Ben Yates & JQ, from Future Lab (http://www.futurlab.co.uk). Ben & JQ are two Brighton graphic artists who are old friends and also happen to be a great working team. Go to http://www.psi-o.net to see more of JQ's work.

Once the film is complete, it will then go on to Jean Mark aka JFB (One Eye Records), renowned drum n bass/hiphop producer and DJ, who will create a soundtrack for the film. The soundtrack will feature an exclusive track from The Daruma Dolls - other artists TBC.

I'm off to New York for all of December to arrange for screenings after the Brighton premiere - more on that as and when the film looks closer to completion.

Sorry it's taken so long - we started filming in summer 2003 and here we are, approaching 2006. This film business is not one to be rushed, I've found, but hopefully the end result will be worth the wait.
