I was riding the bus on Wednesday and traffic was really bad. I was on a bus that had free Wi-Fi, so I hopped onto Washington State's Department of Transportation website and took a look at the traffic alerts to see what the hold up was. Turns out, there was an accident that was blocking the car pool lane. When I clicked on the area that my bus was currently stuck in (I-405/I-90 Interchange), I saw myself:

Well, I saw the bus that I was on stuck in traffic. While you can't see me or anything, it still creeps me out that someone could be watching my every move if I were driving my car or something. I wonder how many times I've been caught picking my nose by some DOT traffic cam operator? I guess this is the first time I've really felt like Big Brother was watching.

Top Ten Spoof Movies

In continuing my movie lists, I have decided to do a list for my favorite spoof movies. Most people don't care for spoof movies, but I've always liked them. You can't take any of it seriously, and you can't expect any great production value. To me, there hasn't been a good spoof movie in a long time. The Scary Movie series is decent, but it just doesn't compare to some of the classics. In the end, the movie that makes me laugh the most and the hardest deserves this award. This is only my opinion.

#10 Hot Shots! movies (1991 and 1993) - For me, the two Hot Shots movies are equally funny. It's classic Jim Abrahams material. I've always felt that Charlie Sheen was out of place in the comedy world, but with spoofs, he seems to just fit right in.
Favorite scene: I love all the scenes when the little chihuahua dog keeps getting sat on.

#9 Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002) - I remember screening this movie with fellow AMC employees Jason and Tyree back when I worked at AMC Center Plaza 6 in Federal Way. We were all really tired from working that night and were probably already in a goofy mood. Kung Pow seemed like the funniest thing in the world at the time. While I don't think it is the funniest movie ever made, I do still think it is hilarious. We've all jokingly dubbed over cheesy kung-fu films ourselves, but only Steve Oedekerk was brave enough to pitch the idea to a studio.
Favorite scene: I love the scene near the beginning when he fights the big group of people and the camera zooms in and out of everyone for a long time.

#8 Wrongfully Accused (1998) - Bless Leslie Nielsen. That man has probably made me laugh more than any other actor in my entire life. His facial expressions are genius and his comedic timing is spot on. Wrongfully Accused stands out for me because it came out right when I started getting into all of the other more classic spoof films. That, and making fun of just about every thing from North by Northwest to Baywatch.
Favorite scene: At the beginning when he's playing the violin and he sees a woman on the balcony playing with a cigar. Not that, but his reaction to that.

#7 Austin Powers series (1997-2002) - Mike Myers really hit it on the button with Austin Powers. Spoofing just about every famous scene from the James Bond movies, Austin Powers showed us how silly action spy movies can be. What makes Austin Powers fresh is that it makes fun of current pop culture while also taking jabs at the '60s and '70s. This makes it enjoyable for a wide audience. Unlike most people, I happened to enjoy all three of the AP movies and I'm still hoping for a fourth.
Favorite scene: "Aye, they're always after me lucky charms."

#6 Spaceballs (1987) - Spaceballs is one of the first Star Wars parodies to do it right, in my opinion. It was different enough to be original with a lot of jokes not just making fun of Star Wars, but the entire sci-fi space genre in general. Mel Brooks is responsible for many great spoof movies: Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood - Men in Tights. And I know some people will be upset not to see those movies on this list. It's not that I don't like them, but I just ran out of room on this list and I just happen to like these other movies more.
Favorite scene: When Dark Helmet, Colonel Sandurz, and the video operator are watching Spaceballs.

#5 Clue (1985) - Although it is based off of a board game, Clue the movie is much more than that. It spoofs murder mystery films, as well as all those scary Vincent Price movies like House on Haunted Hill and House of Wax. There really is a simple genius behind the film. It doesn't take itself seriously and it lines up the laughs just as well as any other comedy. And the fact that the writers wrote three alternate endings that played in different movie theatres across the country makes the film that much more unique.
Favorite scene: The singing telegram.

#4 The Princess Bride (1987) - A movie that could easily be overlooked when it comes to spoofs. The Princess Bride tells your typical "save the princess" story, but uses a lot of comedy and action to support it. It is based off of the 1973 novel of the same name and the use of telling the story like a grandfather reading to his ill grandchild gives credit to William Goldman. No doubt that The Princess Bride has turned into a cult classic since its release and is recognized by the American Film Institute as the 88th 100 greatest film love stories of all-time.
Favorite scene: I love all three duels between the Dread Pirate Roberts and Inigo Montoya, Fezzik, and Vizzini.

#3 Naked Gun series (1988-1994) - Naked Gun parodies police movies and TV shows and is based upon the Police Squad! TV series. It makes use of every type of comedy there is. Travesty, parody, slap-stick... it's all there. Once again, Leslie Nielsen is absolutely great as Lieutenant Frank Drebin. And while I think the sequels got a tad bit sillier than the original, I still like them all. To me, the Zucker brothers plus Jim Abrahams is the perfect combination.
Favorite scene: I love all of the opening sequences where you get the P.O.V. from the roof of the police car.

#2 Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - I've seen Life of Brian, I've seen The Meaning of Life, and I don't really like them as much as these movies. What sets Holy Grail apart from all the other Monty Python films is the quality of comedy and story-telling. The camerawork is brilliant, the directing is flawless, and the editing is superb. It truly is a classic.
Favorite scene: The guards being confused by the King about guarding the Prince.

#1 - High School High - Sike!

#1 Airplane! (1980) - Airplane is one of the funniest spoof movies ever made. The jokes were completely fresh for its time. The absolute absurdness of it all makes this film so funny. Abraham and the Zuckers really know how to make a spoof movie right, which is why I like the third and fourth Scary Movies more than the first two. All of the writers of the latest "spoof" films like Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie, Superhero Movie, Date Movie, and the upcoming Disaster Movie (yes, I'm mostly talking to you Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer) need to take a good hard look at Airplane again and learn a thing or two.
Favorite scene: Leslie Nielsen repeatedly coming into the cockpit and saying "I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you."

Runner's up: This Is Spinal Tap, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood - Men in Tights, Jane Austen's Mafia!, Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4, Kung Fu Hustle.

Crawling, Walking, and other videos and pictures

I finally got Tawnya's video of Jelly walking uploaded:

That was two weeks ago. Since then, she hasn't really been too fond of walking on her own, but she is almost constantly walking around while supporting herself next to a wall or with the coffee table.

She's also started to climb stairs. This evening, I watched her climb four steps all by herself.

Last weekend, Bethany, Juliana, and I went to the International District in Seattle to see the Night Market. It wasn't very big, but I don't think very many people know about it yet. There were a handful of food booths and merchants selling stuff. The community center was also there showing how to make Chinese paper lanterns. I guess when it gets dark, they play a movie in Hing Hay Park. However, we did not stay long enough for that. Overall, we had a fun time, but I hope it gets bigger in the future. The event goes on August 9, 16, and 23 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Twilight moves to the November 21st spot!

Some even better news out of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince getting pushed back to summer 2009. Yes, it's even better than Deathly Hallows: Part I not being delayed.

Twilight has been moved from December 12th to November 21st, the now vacant release date. As I claimed before, Twilight was just about the only competition that Harry and co. had to worry about, and sure enough, here it comes. That's not to say that Twilight is going to make as much as any Harry Potter movie ever could, but it goes to show that the late November date is an important one.

This is a huge score for Twilight, as the two films share a similar demographic. In the media, Twilight has even been compared to the Potter series, ever since Eclipse knocked Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows off the best-seller list last year. I'm going to guess that Twilight will make at least 40% more than it would have if it had come out in December.

Twilight was originally scheduled to go head-to-head with The Day the Earth Stood Still, facing stronger competition in the weeks ahead from the Jim Carrey's comedy Yes Man, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Tale of Despereaux, and Bedtime Stories. The new November 21st date leaves the film with weeks of breathing room. The only real competition to be had is from Disney’s computer animated film Bolt, which will open the same day.

IMAX has still not announced a replacement to fill the spot that was originally occupied by the Half-Blood Prince. IMAX reps have said that they have already "initiated some conversations about a replacement film" and that they are "confident" that they will will find a "good project." Could Twilight be coming to IMAX? Probably not, but Bethany and I are hoping. I’m would bet that IMAX will either go with Disney’s Bolt, or extend the two-week release of Madagascar 2.

Lars and the Real Girl Review

There are very minor spoilers in this review.

PLOT: A delusional man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet.

THE GOOD: Gentle humor. You know, from the look of the trailer for Lars and the Real Girl, and even the vague plot line, I was expecting a lot of crude humor. But when I heard from others that the movie barely makes any reference to sex, and that in fact the main character is a devout Christian, I was surprised. Why market this movie as a teen comedy look-alike rather than what it really is: a sweet, innocent, gentle film. Offbeat comedies are definitely a lot more enjoyable. I felt the same way I did when I watched Napoleon Dynamite and Dan in Real Life for the first time. Things that are not funny clearly turn out to be just from the shear awkwardness of it all.

Acting. Personally, I've never been completely impressed with Ryan Gosling, and I think I feel the same way. On one hand, he plays the role of the painfully shy Lars brilliantly. On the other hand, it doesn't look like that tough of a role to me. Still, Gosling is supported by great performances by Paul Schneider, who plays his older less shy brother, and Emily Mortimer, who I refer to as the actress who always looks like she is about to cry.

Messages. You can gather a handful of good messages in this movie. One thing that I struggle with is appearances. Lars' brother Gus is really worried about what other people will think of Lars treating this doll like a real girlfriend. I think we can all admit that we've been guilty of pride at some point in our lives. Another message, or rather encouragement, that I got out of this movie is that it's okay to make imaginary friends. In some ways, it's healthy. There are lots of studies that say that imaginary friends are good for children. They improve creativity, promote an active imagination, it boosts self-confidence, and it ensures future healthy relationships. Not once did Lars treat Bianca (the doll) badly. He loves her and expects everyone else to treat her the same way he does. When the town finally starts accepting Bianca as a person (What would Jesus do?), that's when everyone comes together in the right way.

THE BAD: Directing. I did not care for Craig Gillespie's (Mr. Woodcock) style of directing at all. There's no flare to it, nothing stimulating to any of my senses. Might as well have had an amateur hold a palm-sized camcorder for the movie. It would have had a similar affect.

Pacing. It's slow. I blame this on a lot of repetition. We're introduced to the town and we watch how each of them react to Bianca. It's always the same. Shock and surprise, and eventually, acceptance.

THE END: While I think Lars and the Real Girl could have been presented to us much better, I still enjoyed this movie. The story is engaging enough and the light humor really sets the tone. Go rent this one now.

The Biggest Loser @ Studios, v3

We've all gotten fat again over the summer due to the numerous barbecues, free ice cream, and such. It's time for another diet bet.

This time we have a smaller group playing because of a few flakes that we struggled to get money from last time. They were dealt with appropriately. With five players this go around and a $20 buy in, we should have the same amount of intensity and encouragement as we did the first time.

This is the third diet bet and not the second because I did not participate in the second one, so I didn't bother talking about it. Andrew was also the big winner of the second contest, so I'm going to have to focus on beating him.

We are dieting for five weeks this time. I weighed in at 200.6 lbs. This is the first time that I have weighed over 200 lbs. in my entire life. Not something to be proud of, but I'm actually quite impressed with myself. Little did my 18-year-old, 125 lbs. self think I could ever reach this weight. The scale does not lie. I'm hoping to ditch 20 pounds during this competition and instead of completely going off the diet at the end, I will be switching to a less strict diet to maintain a healthy body weight.

As before, I will be following my own diet guide. It works. It helped me lose 15 lbs. the first time. I don't like it when people say that crash diets don't work. They really do if you stick with them. The only reason I gained weight again was because I flat out stopped dieting. So, don't blame the diet, blame the individual.

Well, wish me luck.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moved back

Warner Bros. just announced that they are moving Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from November 21, 2008 to July 17, 2009. The reasons given are that the summer season is a more ideal window for making money, and that the writer's strike left a big gap in the summer calendar.

I don't buy it. The most common reason to push back a movie is to fix it up because it sucks. I'm not saying that Half-Blood Prince is bad, or is going to be bad, but you can make a pretty good assumption since the last movie was crap. As I've preached many times before, David Yates is ~~a talentless director~~ one of the worst directors of all-time (just for you, Carlos) and I would not be surprised if WB is unhappy with the product so far. Boy, am I glad I didn't put HBP on my most anticipated list for this year because it would have been a total waste of space.

Another reason I don't particularly buy the first excuse is the fact that moving to a summer release doesn't necessarily mean more money. So far, three HP films have been released in November and they averaged $916 million worldwide, while the two summer releases averaged $866 million worldwide. That's a $50 million difference, people! Plus, if the movie came out in November, it would have zero competition as the next big movie release would be Twilight which doesn't even come out until a month later. With this summer release, now it has to compete with Ice Age 3, Land of the Lost, and Roland Emmerich's next disaster movie, 2012.

There is a little bit of good news to this... fans will not have to wait as long for the first Deathly Hallows film as this push back does not affect the release date for the final two movies... yet.

So, I guess we'll see if Yates will pull off another stinker. My guess is yes.

Edit 3:37 PM: Disney has decided to move Bolt up a week to the November 21st date. Good move Disney. Bad move Warner Bros.

YouTube videos freezing problem

And now for a serious Ask Cam the IT Guy problem. I've had a couple people who visit my blog regularly inform me that they are unable to view my YouTube videos. The claim is that when they hit play, the audio and video loads completely and plays for about 2 seconds, then freezes. To ensure this wasn't just my blog, I told them to go to another video site and try to watch a video there. Same problem.

Today, I sat down at our home computer and reproduced the same issue.

I Googled this error and found a ton of hits; most of them appearing around June 2008. The problem lies within Adobe Flash Player 9. For some reason, it doesn't like the latest versions of Firefox, but it doesn't seem to act up for everyone. It also has affected some IE users.

The solution:
1) Download the Adobe uninstaller. This is going to completely uninstall Flash Player on your computer.
2) Download Flash 10 beta (for Windows).
3) Close Firefox/IE.
4) Run the uninstaller.
5) Run the Flash 10 installer.
6) Open Firefox/IE and try again.

This worked perfectly for me. I hope the folks at Mozilla become more aware of this issue because it certainly is dampening on a lot of users' spirits. If this works for you, please comment below. And if this solution does not work for you, certainly comment below and I will research this issue further. I don't want anything to stand in the way of you watching Jelly being cute.

Bernie Mac dead at 50

While I never really cared for the comedy of Bernie Mac, I still liked him in Ocean's Eleven. He died earlier this morning from complications relating to pneumonia, according to CNN. Bernie Mac had been hospitalized for more than a week due to a lung infection. He was 50 years old.

Juliana Entertainment

Juliana has started walking. It seems that she started doing everything within the last couple weeks. She's been crawling, standing up unsupported, walking around while holding on to the coffee table, and now taking her first few steps. She doesn't walk for a long time, but rather three or four steps before she tumbles over. Still, I've been so impressed with her lately.

Here's a video of Jelly crawling a little bit and playing with my laptop's power cord. Don't worry, the cord wasn't plugged in. This is when she was first getting the hang of crawling, so there's not too much of it. You can see that she understand the concept though.

And here is a video of her standing herself up using me to hold on to and then letting go and standing all by herself totally unsupported. I know you can see my hand behind her, but that was just to catch her in case she falls. Trust me, that is her standing all by herself.

SeaFair Weekend

You've already read about us going to the Breaking Dawn release party, but we did a lot more this past weekend.

On Saturday, we went to my aunt and uncle's house on Mercer Island and watched the Blue Angels show that always goes on during SeaFair. The food was delicious and the entertainment couldn't be better. At one point, one of the jets went right over the house. It was a really cool experience. Check out the video I uploaded.

On Sunday, my dad and I went hiking on the Tiger Mountain #3 trail. It's about a 7 mile round trip hike with some fairly steep parts, but fairly easy overall. At the top, there were some gray jays that would land on your fingers if you held out a handful of breadcrumbs. There is a small lake at the base of the hike that has a 1.5 mile loop trail that goes around it. One day, Bethany and I will take Juliana there for a short hike and picnic.

Twilight mania

I recently finished reading the book Twilight. This is news for a few reasons:

1) I barely ever read books.

2) I barely ever finish reading books.

3) Twilight is an incredibly popular book series.

The books are currently some of the most popular books written for young adults, with sales exceeding eight million and over five million sold in the U.S. alone. Stephenie Meyer is the author of the books and has also grown in popularity.

I first heard about Twilight from my favorite movie website /Film because of the news they posted about the Twilight movie. After learning that it was one of the most popular books, I told Bethany about it. Bethany, who is an avid reader, immediately picked up on the series and finished reading them all within two weeks. Me, not being the avid reader, took about the same amount of time just to finish the first book. It has interested me enough to start reading the second.

I have to say that Meyer has created a unique world. Twilight is about vampires, but not your typical vampires. Yes, they still crave blood, but there's a lot of differences from the traditional vampires. Garlic doesn't affect them, they don't fear crosses (they actually have some in their own house), and the sunlight actually does something cool to their skin rather than burn them. It makes the story a little more interesting because you quickly realize that you don't know how these people actually work.

The book is geared more towards teen girls as there is a lot of romance and teenage angst to get through. Most of it was quite boring to read through for me, but bearable. Meyer tends to repeat herself after a while (like talking about Edward's icy cold hands), but I just start to scan over those paragraphs when I see them. The ending, although not entire satisfying, is fairly well-written.

On Friday, the fourth book in the series, Breaking Dawn, was released at midnight. Bethany, Tawnya, and I went to the book release party at the Federal Way Borders. I've never seen so many 14-17 year old girls gathered in one place, but then again, I never went to a Backstreet Boys/'N Sync concert back in the day. They had trivia and look-a-like contests going on. I sat in a big comfy chair and read some Bleach manga and Batman comics.

The books mostly take place in Forks, Washington. This adds some extra cool points to the books because they talk about local cities sometimes. I guess Forks has grown in popularity because of Twilight, which is good for the little town. Perhaps one day, we'll drive out there and go on a tour of the city.

But let me get back to the movie since I prefer talking about movies much more than books. It looks quite promising with only a few annoyances that I may have to get over. I think the casting was fairly poor with the exception of Edward, Jacob, and Bella. Kristen Stewart (Into the Wild, Panic Room) will be playing Bella and Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) will be portraying the vampire Edward. Almost all of the other cast members, aside from Taylor Lautner who plays Jacob, look nothing like I pictured them in the book. I'm also not a fan of them choosing to shoot the film in Oregon instead of Forks and La Push in Washington. Despite these things, this movie is going to be huge. The preview and behind-the-scenes clips are pretty cool looking, but we shall see.

If you haven't read the books, try reading the first one and if you don't like it, you're not going to like any of them. The movie might be a little more interesting, but then again, it could fail miserably. Twilight mania is coming. Are you ready?

3-year Anniversary

Bethany and I have been married for three years today. It feels like we've been married much longer, but in a good way. It's probably because we've been dating for over 6 1/2 years. I love her more and more each day. She is an amazing wife, and mother, and I couldn't be happier with anyone else. This past year has been the most eventful year in our lives so far. We had a baby, separated from the military, moved back home, got a new job, and bought a condo. I couldn't have done any of this without the love and support of my wife. Bethany, I love you.
