Setup Guide

Custom Built

Audioengine designs and manufactures our own tweeters, woofers, and many other critical components. In other words, these are not "box built" speakers with off-the-shelf parts but entirely custom-designed to our specifications. What we do not fabricate directly in our factory we have custom-made to our designs (parts such as toroidal transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses, for example). The cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are all painstakingly tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires much less power than AV stereo receivers and passive speakers.

Based on Studio Monitor Designs
Studio monitor speakers are used by producers and engineers in recording and production studios. They are designed with a theoretical flat frequency response which allows the engineer to create a final mix in such a way that the recorded music will sound good on most other speakers. Although Audioengine speakers are not designed to be up-close "nearfield" studio monitors, we do carry over much of the same higher-end technology, components, and design philosophy for Audioengine speakers.

Drivers

Audioengine uses audiophile quality, ferro fluid cooled, silk dome tweeters with Neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is obviously very strong, which means that the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The speaker materials and construction are robust enough to stand up to some serious thrashing, so speaker grills aren’t needed. In other words, we did our homework on the speaker drivers and they will sound and look great after many years of use.

Cabinets
To minimize unwanted resonances and distortion, Audioengine cabinets have thick high-resin MDF walls with extensive internal bracing. Heavy internal sound-damping material is used to reduce unwanted sound reflections inside the cabinet. All cabinet edges are rounded which look great and reduce high-frequency diffraction effects on the front baffles. Each cabinet contains tuned, rear-firing ports. Both speakers are tuned and tested together and sold in pairs.

Power Amplifier
The amplifiers in Audioengine speakers are located in the left speaker and are a very conservatively rated all-analog design. All components are tuned together for each model, which provides a much more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers and separate amplifiers. Circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for maximum mechanical shock protection (a good thing).

Power Transformers
Power transformers are a large contributor to the overall audio performance, especially in the low end. Again, no off-the-shelf parts here. Audioengine uses gapless core toroidal transformers which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, directly translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard, lower-cost "EI" transformers and also generate less heat. In other words, toroidal transformers do make a difference.

Shielding
Both drivers are directly video shielded and allow the user to place the speakers within a few inches of a video monitor. This shielding also offers protection for hard-drive digital music players.

USB Power
5V@1.2A USB power supply powers the latest generation iPods and most other USB "bus-powered" devices. The USB port is for charging only, not for data transfer or music syncing. Available on Audioengine 5.

consumerism ~ obsession with the new new thing

I think it was secondary 3 when I truly wanted to own something, to desire something. That was to buy a flute. For better or worse, it was only then that I got to understand better the concept of money and more.

Ironically as I moved on in life, I did not spend the thousands on getting my most desired flute. Instead I got one with the help of a teacher, from a local 2nd hand shop for a mere 100 bucks. The money was diverted to paying of my school fees, a dslr camera and a trip to Taiwan. Sometimes its hard to distinguish between want and need.

I want to buy a laptop, but do I really need it? I want to buy a dslr, but do I really need it? There are times where one would suggest simply letting go of this "me" that exist in all of us, our rational self. Although wants and needs might possibly be the same, more often than not, it is usually conflicting. Siding with want would mean forgoing need, and vice versa. It would be clearer when we are at the point of decision making with resources being limited, where the "I" and "me" are negotiating.

The question is where does this "want" originate from. It is curious that humans are possibly the only being who would have the idea of wanting something. Foxes hunt for rabbits to feed its young, but do they kill off entire families of rabbits just so they are bored? Is there a reason or purpose to our life-form. Is there some role we are supposed to fulfill and stop at that? Why is it animals do things that are just enough, while humans kept doing things beyond what they are supposed to.

I think its something to do with how our brains are designed. I think our brain are so developed that it is something that we might not be able to control well. Being humans, at some point in life, there is always this feeling of emptiness in our hearts, that can be satisfied in today's world by materialism. To have our hearts feel full, or to die with a smile or without a care of the world, we need to work hard and have more things with our names on it.

Why is there this phenomenon of people wanting to own more things than they need. Why do people not be like animals, getting enough to satisfy a single meal. Are our brains so advanced that we cannot control it the way we want it to. This need to satisfy the emptiness of the heart give birth to the want. And could this finally bring about the eventual demise of the human kind? Can the universe sustain such an idea of infinity growth and want?

So why did I want to buy a flute, or for the matter, a laptop or a camera? I do not know.

I guess one reason we are superior to animals is our ability to do imaging in our brain. Its a really mysterious power I think, in some sense, this meant looking into the future as it would meant envisioning what we or our environment would become. The power of imagination let us see things which might not be there, but might be there if we can make them real.

I can imagine Galileo looking to the night sky, imagining what it feels like to be on moon or to see up close anyone of the stars up there. And he made it happen, with the telescope.

Thus I think that there is only one source of want, which comes from our desire to conquer, regardless of known or unknown. Although this ability guaranteed our survival in this world, it might also be the eventual cause of downfall of the humans. Will that day ever come?

The chief evil of the world, Capitalism, is the ultimate system to capture and abuse this innate want ability of ours. Social trends and cultures would all fuel this monster. Once this starts, it would never stop, or rather no one would allow it to stop. Its plain madness to imagine life without capitalism. The slippery slope and snow ball effect would only mean that problems would just be increasing at an increasing rate and its unstoppable. To do something would mean a fall out with the world, nobody would want that to happen.

It is incorrect to state that we should be rid of all desires, as even monks who propagate this are experiencing a desire to rid of all desires. Isn't it contradictory? Nonetheless, this hole in every human heart can still be mended, when one study buddhism and gain an enlightened understanding of life. It is not wrong to say that the spirit of capitalism has brought about more progression for humans than in the entire history, but the decay is more obvious now. How would one be truly satisfied?

Right now, the "I" in me is rather strong, so I would say: "heck with these ideologies, just get me my macbook and flute", although I know I would regret later, maybe in the next billion years.. However, if you ask me why I buy them, I would not know what to say, but its to fill the bottomless hole in my heart. I know that immediately after buying the macbook, the next moment, I already using it to search for the next new macbook...

Recession rampant everywhere, job loss has been ever increasing, people can't even to finance their homes now. My maturity value for my insurance plan just decreased by 15%. How bad is this crisis? I wonder. It seems for now this disaster is not affecting the general population much, except the super rich or those working in banks and financial institutions.

The world economies are built upon capitalism which the Americans have been propagating for decades. The beginning was imperialism when the European powers began carving the world up to fuel their economy, at the same time to export what they started to produce during the industrial revolution. The capitalists wanted to have more profit, thus produced more, which increased jobs, however, there needs to be an import country, these would be the asian/ african economies. Free trade would be a formula for success for capitalists, as they are able to grow their economies more by exporting.

The Americans took over from the British and became center of the financial world and transformed imperialism to capitalism, beating communism, fascism on the way. As capitalism spread, countries started trading beyond their boundaries at an unprecedented level. Belong long the whole world is connected in one way or another. Soon local capitalists would grow to be powerful transnational capitalists, with some earning more than countries.

As the story goes, unfortunately, this also meant one economy importing less would affect the other exporting country. For economies to continue to grow, people have to spend, spend, spend! The culture of consumerism certainly did help with fattening the capitalists' pockets, and it did not help that values of society are changing too.

Success is now achievement-related, depending on definition, this can be materialistically or not. Although current trends would point to the former. People are now defined as what they have, instead of who they are. Does a common wage taker have less self-respect than a businessman? Can the boss be rude to his employees just because they worked for him?

Coming back to the point, capitalist works and can continue to function only when consumers consume, and this philosophy is just perfect for the never ever satisfied humans who just wanted more and more.

Fully embracing consumerism, I would need to spend too. Thus, I am going to throw some hard earned money at getting a Macbook and also an Audioengine 5 speakers.

Economy, recover already.

Maybe I should be calling the banks instead.

My stock investment that screwed up!

I am really very new to stock trading or investing.

In the past, I always heard/ read stories of really stupid and funny people buying stocks and ended up getting their fingers burned. Weddings have to be cancelled or postponed, home loans unable to complete, selling of cars.

Now that I am in the market, I realized that I'm one of those. We have to be always vigilant and clear-minded if we were to survive in the market and profit from it. Although I did lose some money and gained some too, this time, I am talking about losing potential earnings. It might seemed useless or pointless to mention all this, because if you did not buy and sell you do not earn. Potential does not mean anything, it just mean unrealized profit which is zero bucks, but it would still be a lesson learnt for me too. Learn to diversify your portfolio.

The story began when I started to trade nasdaq stocks or penny stocks, intrigued by the out of the world 3 digit percentage gain in an intra day. After sometime, I finally pick some stocks to be added to my watchlist. They are, MESA, EPEX, GSAT, WAVE, SIRI, CTIC, NVD. I had expected these stocks to be going up through the roof or at least the ceiling soon and I just exited my position on EPEX.

I have a few choices, take my chance with EPEX and re-enter again, diversify and invest in a few of the stocks, or invest in other stocks. Being the terrible noob that I am, I went with the last choice, I threw everything I had with MESA. It was this fateful day, that my hair loss increased, although due to loss of potential gain, not actual loss.

What can I say...

Looking at this I was pretty sad, in fact, I was devastated. Everything that I picked went up greatly, except the one I invested!! WTH!! I even made a little loss..

After this incident, I have decided to always invest in not one, but several potential stocks. In the market, nothing is guaranteed unless the money is already in your pocket. Also never invest more than 10-20% in such stocks as although the gain can be pretty quick, the price would come down hard too. There might be a occurrence of pump and dump although less common then sub penny stocks. The risk is still there..

Finishing national service last year, I have to now work part time to not only finance my daily expenses, but also much more like my university fees, insurance and misc bills. After an entire semester of studying and working in the evening, I find it remarkably rewarding to still have some spare cash at the end of the month.

It was not till february that I faced my first crisis. During this time, I was just starting to dabble with stocks particularly US stocks. I have thought of many ways to get my hands on more cash with less effort, but it wasn't always easy. Anyway here are some ways that I brainstormed and rated.

So as of the day I left the army, I took up jobs as a admin staff, later on as a telemarketer and surveyor. These gave me a monthly income which still allowed me to maintain my current lifestyle, which I am pretty frugal. These jobs would require me to spend time in exchange for money, so if there is a way out, I would take it.

Since young, I always like making things, small or big, getting hands-on. I remember making a what my teacher thought was a unique model of a boat for my secondary school project while others simply stacked cubes above rectangular blocks. My current "desk lamp" was savaged out of a broken one and attached to a bookstand. I also made a ipod stand which allowed charging and audio output at the same time. So when serving the army, which had plenty of wires lying around, a group of us started to toy with them.

The thought of making things out of raw material amuses me greatly at the same time excites me too. So there I was thinking, would anyone want to buy these wire figurines or objects? I ran a search online, and I was astounded. The scale and complexity of some art are really mind bobbling. Inspired, I spent weeks running around the neighborhood looking for potential sources of cheap wire to practice on. Alas, wire isn't cheap at all. I found out that given the cost of the material, the time I spend planning and making one and also the price I am willing to sell, I would definitely not be able to survive a month or two.

In the recent years, making money online is becoming more popular, and with the introduction of adsense, it is all the more possible even for the masses. There is also a rise in professional bloggers who are able to quit their day jobs to concentrate on their online venture. Intrigued by this phenomenon, how can I be left out? The plan was to create dozens of websites and filled them up with adsense ads, so the earnings will multiply. However, it was not always easy, due to this, I spent countless hours on end, day after day, weeks after week, tweaking and updating my sites. However, the trouble was that to get clicks, I would need traffic and to get that I needed quality instead of quantity material on the sites. It was impossible to accomplish that. Even as I scale down to a few niche sites, its hard. I guess it would take a long time to build up a base.

I also liked photography, so I also tried selling some photos I took online, although there was only one sold, it was satisfying. But money wise, it wasn't viable. I did also though of e-commerce, but without the capital, it would be impossible to begin. Although now that I have the capital, I'm having doubts what to invest in.

Having been playing the flute for a number of years, the thought of buskering or tutoring others would strike me occasionally. However not having any formal training really held me back. Due to this, I too lacked the confidence that what I teach although might be helpful but may still be lagging.

Sales was also something I ventured, although its slightly more rewarding in terms of financially, it was a torture for me physically and mentally. Devoting time to sales would really be depriving me of the precious time that I can use to study.

From the looks of it, I am quite a jack of all trades, master of none. Sometimes, I do think this way. Nowadays, I see it as nothing ventured nothing gained. It was during building my adsense websites that build up my knowledge of making a website that led to me helping a friend do his for a small fee. Also I realized that it is incredibly hard to earn a living doing what you like, and it would take a lot of perseverance. Am I really destined to be working in a box, 9-5pm?

Things took a changed as I mentioned earlier, when I came into contact with the stock market. At the time, market was already pretty gloomy, but many stocks rally to obama announcing his 700 billion injection to the economy. Being a noob that I am, I bought too, and when the day came, the market had a sellout. I lost about 2-3 months worth of hard earned money! Ever heard of buy the rumor sell the news? Well, I haven't, not till the sell out happen and I lost my savings.

Some months later, I have switched from the big board stocks to small nasdaq stocks which had more upside potential or breakout. This changed in focus and strategy certainly brought about some profit for me, though not without its risks. I have now learn not to simply look at the price of the stock. There is always a price lower than the lowest price and one higher than the highest price. If unsure then don't enter, there are always opportunities. Also to buy the trend and not the price.

Thus for now, my money making machine would be trading the US market. And mind you, there is no easy money anywhere, you have to do your own research and have capital to cover your ass, before anything happens. Now lets see how far I would get..

伸手
想摸摸
可是就是碰不到
只能眼睁睁坐在那儿发愣

记得小时侯很调皮
而调皮再加上没耐性
这应该是妈妈们最怕的组合吧

就是有一回妈妈在烧菜
而我也在厨房等晚餐
妈妈是很喜欢开收音机
听一些中文讨论课题的节目
我呢
就是闲闷
就想找些事来做

几十年前的收音机可和我们现在大有不同
那时的我可能还举不起来
又长又大又重
还只能播广播和卡带
真没用

我看着电冰箱上的收音机
虽然不懂要听什么
可是一心就是想要转台

就站在冰箱前
我似乎变得好矮
上层的门都好不容易才能打开

失望绝望
怎么我就不能在高一点
不管啦
我要转台

我叫妈妈帮我转台
可是她还在忙
劝我等她炒好菜再帮我

当时我也不知道哪根筋不对
就一直吵个不停
妈妈还是没办法理我

我看这也行不通就只好靠自己了
收音机的电线是很长的
所以有一段是低垂着
我想如果能把收音机向外拉
我在跳的同时是可能可转台的

就以这很完美的注意
我开始行动了
计划BRAVO
我用力地拉扯电线可是就是拉不动
咳。。

一气之下
我跳了起来用身体的重量和浑身力气
猛扯
不料
年幼与冲动－意外发生了

就和我差不多大小的收音机
竟被我扯下来
而就差一点在我头上开花
幸好没
不然可能我现在是个呆子
不过好像不会很聪明
说不定砸下去
我还可能开窍
变神童

这好像不是目前状况
也不是问题所在
收音机没击中我的脑袋
不过它好像要报仇

收音机的降落目标就是我右脚的大脚趾

当时的状况现在也模糊了
好像有点血
脚趾甲好像不见了
看见妈妈很慌张向我奔来

我好像没什么反应
好像开始没什么哭
应该是惊吓过渡了吧

过后醒来发现自己是躺在病床上
其他的也都忘了
只记得不用上学好开心
而脚也不会痛

印象最深刻应该是好温柔的护士
还有还有
超好吃超温馨的一碗水蛋
现在想起好怀念
好想吃啊

好像过了不久
我又闯祸了
看到了钉纸的文具
就在手上玩
谁能料到我竟然钉上了自己的左大拇指

真是够白痴的
那时可能还不懂事
就跑去找妈妈看
也没哭
妈妈见了又开始慌

哈哈
我这做儿子的还是麻烦啊
不过如果现在真是钉上
我可能是会疯掉的

现在回想起是蛮逗趣的
可是有时我看见自己脚趾的伤痕
是会提醒自己做事记得要三思想后果

没看到脚趾呢
那就让我继续玩吧
哈哈

真是好感人

连我也情不自禁
竟流下了热泪来

记得上回观看时
心里是充满了自豪
为自己是华侨感到骄傲
这是在看奥运零八的想法

可是昨天在看残疾奥运开幕
它的每个表演项目都
表现出人的精神
毅力

可能是我敏感吧
就看着一位行动不方便的老将传火把也能弄得我眼角含泪
弄得我视线模糊不清

看着残疾人士克服万难达到许多的成就与胜利
猛然有所领悟
似乎每个人都在努力向上
而我呢
怎么做都在原地踏步

每次看到人做了些伟大的事
心里都怪怪的
一方面在帮他们打气
另方面有点难以置信

能见到他们的胜利是我的光荣
我也感到谦卑
自己好像活在大人国
自己是那么的渺小啊

流泪
是因为我看到了是他们胜利背后的心酸
谁知道他们是怎么的敖过来的
是被他们不败伟大精神
有所感动

希望大家继续加油
突破自己的极限
创造更多的奇迹

有时侯心情不佳
我都不是很想马上回家
喜欢在街上闲逛着
最差劲的就是家附近也没什么好狂的

幸好离家不远还是有家规模相当大的购物中心
没事就在里头瞎逛
爬上爬下
时间也渐渐流失
心情也奇迹般地变得舒畅

走了这么多年
购物中心的蓝图也在我脑留下了烙印

想买衣服
一楼有三间店
二楼有五间
三楼有四间

想吃些有的没的
低地有七间
一楼有五间
二楼有四间
三楼有五间
五楼有食阁
七楼也有食阁

你看
我背得多熟
想买些什么
想做些什么
想吃些什么
问我就对了
简直是易如反掌

最近
牛仔确实好忙
好久没坐着发呆
好久没听到风了
好久没到我的后院去
也就是我这应有尽有的百货公司

最近
刚刚又拜访了它
外表依然没失当年风采
一层层地绕了几圈
不知从何时
一切似乎变得陌生

不是我记忆衰退
就是管理层做了许多的更动
有好多店面和品牌都不眼熟
底层还开了所宠物店
虽然如此
如果回想起往事
还是很难和它拖得了关系的

好久以前
我曾今有个想法
就是只有我一人把购物中心当作是后院
不过现在好像每时每刻
都能看见许多熟悉面孔

在大家的日常生活里
购物中心也无形中成为了大家理所当然的好聚处
大家对它的心态也就会演变
现在就好比自己的后院一样

相信每个人都虽然没后院
但在偶然还是不知不觉下
也会走入自己的后院。。

今天又是一天
普通平静的一天
很多时候享受人生未必奢侈

就坐在窗边
收音机也是关着的
双眼合起面对着窗外
耳边只传来一阵阵风声
头发也随着风在飘扬
不知何时有感到这么的沉稳充实

一切烦恼随着每阵风
轻轻微微漂浮起
一直飘到云朵里
而也渐渐消失
陶醉在这风的陪伴
无意中忘了自我

人生是否如此
短短几十年
随风而来
随风而去
是不是我太执着了
到底有没有真整活过

记得我外公去世
我没特别的难过
就感到感伤
也不知做出什么的反应
就坐面对着风
回忆着与阿公的日子

亲爱的阿公就淡淡地消失了
虽然他还是会在我心中
相信他得到了属于他自己的幸福
我也希望自己离开这世界时
脸含笑
安详地
随着微风淡淡离去

目光转向了手机
已经是中午了
今天是几号呢

是九月十一日

那不就是当年
美国贸易中心被袭的那一天

我也只能探口气
人的执着不仅带来了进步
可怕的是它也带来了恐怖

到处各地也有些人抓狂
乱刀乱枪在学校或街上伤人
可能是社会压力吧

我有时在想
为何要承受社会的压力
为什么一定要很有钱
为什么这么的折磨自己
真的就能得到幸福吗

在步伐较快的城市里
尤其是东京或伦敦等
我是觉得应该种多点花草树木
最好是种棵又老又茁壮
的老榆树

大家都能和平
在底下乘凉
偶尔还会有兔子碰碰跳跳
天气晴朗
就坐在草地上
享受着风
什么也不想

就是晓得各地的可怕
自己才会发觉自己是身在福中
社会的平稳谐调也不是理所当然

今日是安然无恙
明日呢
无人可知

我是个简单的人
就希望住在靠山的海边
盖个小房子
养些猫狗兔子之类
过着朴素平淡的日子
享受生活每时每刻的滋味

就让风永远陪伴着我身傍。。

夜以深了
我单独坐在桌前
不知所措，不知方向

The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra contains the best high school musicians from Venezuela's life-changing music program, El Sistema. Led here by Gustavo Dudamel, they play Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, 2nd movement, and Arturo Márquez' Danzón No. 2.
The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra (Sinfónica Juvenil Teresa Carreño) is the national high school age youth orchestra of El Sistema, Venezuela's groundbreaking, life-changing musical education program. To put this ensemble's musicianship in context, the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela is the next step for many of these young musicians. That orchestra, containing musicians from 18 to 28 years old, has toured the world with conductor Gustavo Dudamel and has made a number of recordings on Deutsche Grammophon. The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra is the next level below, and will succeed the Simón Bolívar.
Their conductor in this TEDTalk is Gustavo Dudamel, himself a product of the El Sistema. Dudamel conducted the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela for several years, and recently was named the Los Angeles Philharmonic's music director. He also continues to conduct other orchestras around the world.
The orchestra's namesake, Teresa Carreño, was a legendary Venezuelan pianist after whom the main theater/concert hall complex in Caracas is also named.
