Artwear Symposium 2010

You heard it here first!

We are getting ready for our 2010 Symposium, which will be focused on Artwear. Here are some highlights:

A gallery show will be held in conjunction with the symposium. See the Call for Entry for Inside Out here.
We have already booked Jacqueline Rice & Uosis Juodvalkis, Laurie Schafer, Sandra Erickson and Carolyn Kallenborn to teach pre and post conference workshops on digital fabric design, draping, and much more.
We are working on details for a trunk show and runway show to be held during the event, seminars, networking and more!

High school students from the metro area came for a workshop weekend in January with artists Carly Stipe and Sara Langworthy to create one-of-a-kind fashions from seatbelts.

Jerome Project Grant Winners

There were a total of 73 applications for the first round of the Jerome Fiber Artists Project Grant Program. The applications represented a huge variety fiber art and thoughtful and creative proposals. Our jury panel of fiber artists Jane Dunnewold, Jan Myers-Newbury and Laurie Schafer met and chose the three award winners for 2008. A group of finalists were selected, including Beth Barron, Mary Bergs, Lucy Brusic, Maggie Dayton, Carolyn Halliday, Heidi Henderson, Faye Hoch, Kelly Marshall, Barbara Otto, Ingrid Restemayer, Ann Hall Richards, Allison Roberts, Nou Ka Yang and Rebecca Yaker.

Congratulations to Ingrid Restemayer, Heidi Henderson and Maggie Dayton, who are our award winners for this inaugural round!

Class Proposals

Class Proposals for the Winter/Spring Semester (January-April) are now being accepted.

If you are interested in teaching a class for the Textile Center, please email your class proposal to Becka Rahn by October 30, 2008. We are looking for classes in all varieties of textile techniques for beginners, intermediates and master classes.

Proposals should include:

A description of the proposed class (5-6 sentences)
Teaching hours (How many teaching hours, how many sessions)
A photo or two of the finished products
Your teaching resume

Variations on a Theme: Shibori

Wednesday November 19th 6-9pm

Transform simple silk scarves in to multicolored masterpieces in just one evening! Learn some simple shibori techniques - resist dying in the Japanese tradition, using folding, clamping, binding, stitching and more to create patterns in your fabric before you add the color. You will complete four different variations and leave with a bouquet of silk scarves that you can give as gifts or wear to brighten up your winter wardrobe. Materials fee $35.

Flowers from Scraps

Saturday December 6 10am-2pm

Transform small fabric bits in to pretty accessories - from magic flowers that bloom before your eyes from a simple strip of fabric to flamboyant blossoms to dress up a holiday package, coat lapel, hair ornament or button cover. A great way to use up bits from other projects, repurpose some scraps that are too nice to throw away or use your samples from another class. Materials fee $10, payable to instructor. **Ages 9 and up welcome.

Frosty Felted Wool Snowmen

Thursday December 4th 6-8:30pm

Start with fluffy white wool and end with a little snowman sure to make you smile. In this class, you will learn to make felted wool beads with the basics of wet felting. Great for holiday gifts and decorations! You will take home a finished snowman or two from this fun class. Materials fee $5.

**Ages 10 and up welcome.

Embellished Felted Beads

Saturday December 13th 10am-12pm

Give your felted wool beads some personality! We will start with pre-felted wool beads and then add embroidery, stitch on sparkling beads and more. Embellished felted beads make unique jewelry, fabulous ornaments, one of a kind buttons or fun 3-D art. Learn a collection of techniques and tips to make your beads into works of art. Pre-felted beads and other supplies will be provided by the instructor. You can also bring your collection of felted wool beads or make some in our Felted Snowman class (Dec 4)! Supply list provided. Materials fee $10 payable to the instructor.

Please join us in honoring the rich and varied textile career of Karen Searle. Friday, October 16th at 6pm.

Potluck dinner followed by the presentation of the award and displays of Karen's work.

Artist's Statement:
I utilize the techniques of "women's work" to present the feminine view. My imagery is inspired by womens' lives and womens' bodies, and by the feminine impulse to nurture. My sense of humor enters into the creation process and becomes integral to many of the pieces. I think of my wire sculptures as 3-dimensional line drawings in space. The line and movement of the object and its shadow suggest the energy of a human presence. I think of my work with birch bark and other natural materials as a metaphor for womens' work and women's lives: all involve scavenging, mending, piecing-together, and adorning.

Shibori Cut Loose June 6 - July 19, 2008

Don't miss this amazing collection of Shibori work from all over the world. This exhibition features the work of twenty-one fiber artists who use contemporary and traditional techniques of shaped resist dyeing to create artwear, fabrics, and two- and three-dimensional art. Juried by the distinguished shibori artist Ana Lisa Hedstrom, Shibori Cut Loose incorporates a wide range of approaches to the ancient, worldwide art of resist dyeing.

The Shibori Symposium was a big hit!!

A special thanks to all the artists, students, presenters and volunteers that participated in this event. The symposium's pre and post workshop participants were full of busy creative energy, making the most of every moment they had with Ana Lisa Hedstrom, Yoshiko Wada, Chad Alice Hagen and Jan Myers Newbury. The attendees, whether novices or experts, created amazing shibori pieces under the guidance of these master teachers. The weekend seminars allowed for many insightful discussions, opportunity for networking and a whole lot of fun! Thanks to all of you that attended the symposium and for your support of the Textile Center.

Book Blog!

The library received a new Minnesota Knitters' Guild book called

"Knit Knit: Profiles and Projects from Knitting's New Wave,"

inspired by Sabrina Gschwandtner published by STC Craft/A Melanie Falick Book: New York, 2007.

These knitters are transforming the art of knitting by blurring the boundary between craft and art. Isabel Berglund, from Copenhagen, hand-knit an entire room. Dave Cole from New England, constructed an enormous 25-foot by 20-foot American flag using excavators and utility poles as knitting machines. Bridget Marrin from Los Angeles, knits little dollhouses complete with yarn lawns, shrubbery, and chimneys. She made a stop-motion animation adventure of a knitted girl who knits a boy who later comes to life. Althea Merback from New York City uses Gütermann silk sewing thread and hand-made knitting needles made from medical wire about the diameter of a 100-weight silk sewing thread. This book was inspired by Sabrina Gschwandtner, and profiles 27 of the most talented artists-crafters knitting today. Some of the text refers to information in the book's front flap.

Enjoy tea and refreshment while you help to celebrate the gift Pat's family has so generously given us.

It gives us great pleasure to announce the creation of the Textile Center Pat O'Connor Library Endowment and the renaming of our library to "Textile Center Pat O'Connor Library".

Mike and Maggie O'Connor, Pat's children, will be here to tell the story of Pat's life and share pictures.
Kate Daly from the Friday Knitter's will join us to share some stories about Pat "the creative knitter".
Nancy Mambi, our librarian, will give us some incite as to what our extensive library has to offer the members of the Textile Center.
Pat's dear friend Marian Bagley will be here to talk about Pat's legacy: The Library Endowment.

Pat O'Connor, passed away November 28, 2007. In her memory, Pat's family has established an endowment for the Textile Center Library as a tribute to her tremendous contributions to the arts and her community. The Pat O'Connor Library Endowment will serve as Pat's legacy and will help sustain the resources of the library for future fiber artists. Pat was known to be a world traveler, making friends around the world. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters. She served on the boards of COMPAS and the Textile Council at the Minnesota Institute of Arts. She was president of the St. Anthony Park Arts Forum. She was a giving humanitarian with a thirst for knowledge and a love of the arts. We are thankful to her for all that she did in her life and beyond.
The Textile Center Pat O'Connor Library is one if the largest repositories of fiber art resources in the country. More than 14,000 books, periodicals, and media materials are cataloged in an integrated system and are managed by a professional librarian and volunteer staff.

Many of you may already know that we have a great collection of magazines, and how-to books on felting, dying, quilting and much much more! But what about those items in our library collection that are there to peek your curiosity about the history and culture behind everything from buttons and thread to the history of knitting and everything in between? Our librarian, Nancy Mambi, will be selecting books that she thinks might get you excited about something new or learning about an area of fiber art that you might not have even known existed! Artwear Announcement...

We have been receiving lots of questions about the schedule for the Artwear in Motion show 2008. Unfortunately we will not be holding the event this year. We will be taking this time to examine the field of artwear, work with the fashion and wearable art communities and find ways to serve the artists who make the artwear. If you are interesting in taking part of this "Artware Redesigned" conversation, please contact Carolfaye Meadows, Special Events (e-mail to CarolFaye Meadows).

Dye Lab Thursdays taking a summer vacation

Our artist in residence, Candy Kuehn is getting ready for summer vacation. Candy will be here at the Textile Center on Thursdays through the end of May. So, you have a few more weeks to come in with that old blanket or piece of fabric and turn it into a work of art! Dye Lab Thursdays will resume in September. Punch Cards are available in the Textile Center Shop.

Ewe Knit Tuesdays

The Ewe Knit Tuesdays group is taking a hiatus. We are hoping to continue this knitting group again in the fall. Be sure to check back for updates. Happy knitting!

Knitting Club is a great option if you need to stay a little later to catch a ride home. Just add it on to your registration.

This April got off to a snowy start but we can finally feel spring weather is just around the corner!

Garage Sale Success!
We have done our spring cleaning and so have many of our members and generous contributors. Along with all the donations we received and the countless hours our volunteer staff put in, our annual garage sale fund raiser was a huge success! We thank you all very much for all of your support and assistance. We didn't have the best of weather conditions but we ended up having a great turn out anyway and we would like to thank those of you that visited the Textile Center over the weekend. We hope everyone had a great time and are enjoying all the fun goodies that you took home. We are already looking forward to next year!

Climate Change April 18 - May 31, 2008

This mixed media fiber art exhibition, is a strong response to one of the most urgent crises facing our world today: the undeniable and detrimental effects that poor stewardship of our natural resources has wreaked on our planet. The Fiber Artists' Study Group members embraced the inspiration of climate change and a new energy was unleashed. The outstanding result of that challenge is an eclectic but very personal body of work that is sure to induce a passionate reaction from the viewer.

Opening Reception Friday April 18, 6-8 pm

(come join us for wine and cheese!)
*A postcard catalog of selected works from this show will be unveiled at the opening reception and available for sale in the Textile Center Shop for $15. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this postcard catalog will be donated to the Nature Conservancy.

New Furniture!
Some of you may have already noticed that we recently updated the lobby of the Textile Center. It's colorful and welcoming! The Ewe Knit Tuesdays group has already gotten a chance to test out the cozy new couch. We even have a wonderful place to eat lunch if you are here for an all day class or a full day in the Dye Lab with Candy! Everyone is invited to come enjoy our new space and make yourself at home!

Guest Lecture by Kristin Nicholas

Kristin Nicholas will be visiting the Textile Center on Friday February 15 at 7:00 pm to give a lecture and sign her books! We are delighted that she is coming and hope you are too.

KRISTIN NICHOLAS: THE JOY OF COLOR
Join handknitting designer and author Kristin Nicholas as she talks about her new book Kristin Knits, and the joyful color palette she employs in her unique designs. Her patterns are inspired by ethnic textiles, nature, and the world around her. Julia, her signature blend of wool, alpaca, and kid mohair is featured in her book and her designs. Believing that everyone can have fun with color, Nicholas encourages knitters and fiber artists everywhere to develop personally inspiring palettes for every project.

BIO
Kristin Nicholas is a knitwear designer and decorative artist who lives, designs, and writes in the hills of Western Massachusetts. Her mediums of self-expression include stitchery, knitting, painting, interior design, sewing home furnishings, ceramics, and gardening. She brings her love of color and its possibilities to each of these pursuits. Nicholas was named one of Vogue Knitting's Master Knitters of the '90's and has designed knitwear for Vogue Knitting, and other major magazines. She is the author of Colorful Stitchery, Kids' Embroidery, Knitting Beautiful Classics, and Knitting the New Classics.

A Common Thread and Annual Meeting

In just a few days, A Common Thread, our annual members show, will open in the Joan Mondale Gallery. Hopefully you have seen this fantastic postcard in your mailbox and you are as excited as we are to see the show. The piece featured on the postcard is by Anna Carlson and is titled "Cloud Forest". It is a digital print on fabric that has been cut and stitched. You can see it in person when the show opens January 11. Please plan to come to the opening reception that evening where we will be serving wine, cheese and other goodies.

Also new this year, we have moved the Textile Center's Annual Meeting up to coincide with the opening for the members show. Two great events for our members on the same night! The Annual Meeting will start at 7:00 pm on January 11 and we will be electing the Board of Directors for the coming year and presenting a Spun Gold Award to an outstanding member of the textile community.

Those lovely toes are modeling "Silk Stockings" from Annie Modesitt's new book, Romantic Hand Knits. Come see many projects from the book up close and personal on display in our Library right now.

Don't miss seeing Annie Modesitt at the Textile Center on Friday. She will be speaking and signing books at a fundraising event for the Textile Center Library.
