This dramatization stars Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank, Frances O'Connor, Julia Ormond, Anjelica Huston, Molly Parker, and Patrick Dempsey. Originally broadcast on HBO on February 15, 2004 . The parting was devastating to both mother and child, but Kim believed her Amerasian daughter--the product of a brief love affair with an American Navy officer--would be in danger in Vietnam. The little girl was adopted by a single woman, renamed Heidi and brought up in Tennessee where she concealed her Asian past and became "101%" American. Twenty-two years later, Heidi tracked down her birth mother and visited Danang. The reunion that had raised so many hopes and expectations for Heidi and Kim, quickly became rife with tension and misunderstanding as the cultural gulf between Heidi and her Vietnamese family grew larger and larger.

This important, heart wrenching film speaks to the dislocating experiences of immigrant families the world over and points to the lasting, and at times, invisible wounds inflicted by a conflict that ended more than two decades ago.

Originally broadcast on April 7, 2003 as part of the PBS series The American Experience. Peabody Awards entry number 2003294 DCT Run time: 57 minutes.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion led by Dr. Ian Lekus, Franklin Fellow in the University of Georgia Department of History.

"The Pill "

Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 7:00 p.m.
Room 101, Student Learning Center

In May 1960, the FDA approved the sale of a pill that arguably would have a greater impact on American culture than any other drug in the nation's history. For women across the country, the contraceptive pill was liberating: it allowed them to pursue careers, it fueled the feminist and pro-choice movements and it encouraged more open attitudes towards sex. Among the key players in the development of the drug were two elderly female activists who demanded a contraceptive women could eat like aspirin and then paid for the scientific research; a devout Catholic gynecologist who believed a robust sex life made for a good marriage and argued tirelessly that the Pill was a natural form of birth control; and a brilliant biologist who bullied a pharmaceutical company into risking a possibly crippling boycott to develop this revolutionary contraceptive. In describing the struggles they all hurdled, and by featuring the experiences of a wide-range of ordinary women who came of age in the '40s, '50s and '60s, The Pill presents a compelling account of a society in transition.

Originally broadcast on February 24, 2003 as part of the PBS series The American Experience. Peabody Awards entry number 2003299 DCT. Run time: 57 minutes.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion led by Michelle Cohen, UGA's Sexual Health Coordinator.

For information about other Women's History Month events,

please visit the Women's Studies Program calendar.

For more information, contact the University of Georgia Libraries Media Department at 542-7360 or Mary Miller, mlmiller@uga.edu

Black history Month 2005

Peabody Awards Collection
Screenings
Black History Month 2005
all events are free and open to the public

This year, the Peabody Awards Collection is proud to partner with the Athens-Clarke County Library to present a special Black History series in conjunction with their ongoing Theatre Thursdays program.
All events will be presented at the Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street

Thursday, February 3, 2005
7:00 pm
"The Boy King"

Originally broadcast on WSB-TV (Atlanta) on January 15, 1986.
49 minutes
Not rated. Being separated from one of his best friends and not being served in stores profoundly affects the young "M.L." King (Fred Perrin). As a teenager, "M.L." Says Burnett: "The sound of the blues was a part of my environment that I took for granted. However, as years passed, the blues slowly emerged as an essential source of imagery, humor, irony, and insight that allows one to reflect on the human condition. I always wanted to do a story on the blues that not only reflected its nature and its content, but also alludes to the form itself. In short, a story that gives you the impression of the blues."

Top image from Artist Direct. These historic interviews formed the backbone of this 96-minute documentary as this reform school hellion, who was saved, if only temporarily, from a life of crime and punishment, escorts us through his dark and tumultuous existence as he prepares to assume his destiny as Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World. In this hip and stylish exploration of the troubled life and dazzling career of the boxing champion, these rare and compelling interviews with Tyson himself are combined with candid reflections from those who know him, never-before-seen footage and an edgy and probing narrative to create a riveting and unforgettable story.

Image from The Age.

For more information, contact the University of Georgia Libraries Media Department at 583-0212
or Mary Miller, mlmiller@uga.edu

More about the Peabody Awards Collection

Sesame Street turns 35!!!

>

Big Bird is turning 35!!

And the Peabody Awards Collection is ready to celebrate!

Please join us on Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at 7:00 pm
in room 148 of the UGA Student Learning Center for a screening of the premiere episode of the Peabody-Award winning children's television program Sesame Street on the 35th anniversary of its original broadcast on PBS.

When the Children's Television Workshop presented Sesame Street to the Peabody Board, they described it as "an experiment to determine whether the techniques proven successful in commercial television can be used effectively in teaching preschool children." The experiment was a success, and for the past 35 years, Big Bird, Burt, Ernie, Cookie Monster and the other residents of Sesame Street have been introducing children to numbers, letters, and social skills through extensively researched and carefully presented lessons and stories.

In this series introduction,

Gordon introduces Sally, who has just moved to Sesame Street, to her new neighbors. Election Reform in America highlights a significant news story: the presidential election of 2000 and its implications for future elections and the need for election reform. This one-hour PBS special program combines humor with serious journalism in a unique hybrid that draws attention to dull-sounding but crucial policy and civil rights issues like machine accuracy, role conflicts, and ballot wording and serves as a catalyst to bring more people into our democratic process.

Who Counts? goes behind the scenes as Florida voters and key players in the state’s recount recall their experiences. Expert journalists, academics, comedians and politicians analyze this unprecedented political event and the need for election reform. And all along, Saturday Night Live’s Darrell Hammond puts in his two cents while playing the characters he’s best known for, including Al Gore, Dick Cheney and Bill Clinton. CNN’s former Washington Bureau Chief, Frank Sesno, joins Hammond in this humorous and factual one-hour special. Who Counts? shines a light on a complex and yet essential issue, and uses humor to help us look ahead to a future when everyone’s vote will count equally and be counted efficiently.

2002 Peabody Awards Nominee, 2002149 DCT.
Originally broadcast October 17, 2002 on PBS.

Our discussant for Who Counts? is Alison Bracewell McCullick. It stars Henry Gayle Sanders as Stan and features Kaycee Moore, Charles Bracy, Angela Burnett, Eugene Cherry, and Jack Drummond. The Killer of Sheep's rejection of stereotype rbains as rbarkable today as it was at the time of the film's release.

To Sleep with Anger (1990)
"Danny Glover stars as Harry Mention, a mysterious and magnetic visitor from the Deep South who comes to stay with an old friend, named Gideon (Paul Butler), in South-Central Los Angeles. Harry's effect on Gideon and his assimilated black middle-class family is both immediate and profound. He spins tales full of folklore, lucky charms and bad magic that seb exotic and ominous to these urban up-and-comers who have lost touch with the rural tradition."* The film also stars Paul Butler, Mary Alice, Carl Lumbly, Vonetta McGee, Richard Brooks, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. It won a special jury prize at Sundance and an Independent Spirit Award.
(*Description from Facets multimedia.)

Nightjohn (1996)
Set in the ante-bellum south, Nightjohn tells the story of a young slave girl, Sarny, and her undeterred conviction to learn how to read and write. Sarny is taught by another slave, Nightjohn, at great risk to both of thb, during a time in history when it was against custom for a slave to have these skills. This compelling drama, which was Burnett's first feature film for television, is both an entertaining story and a moving statbent of the power of freedom. It stars Beau Bridges, Carl Lumbly, Lorraine Toussaint, Bill Cobbs, Kathleen York, Gabriel Casseus, Tom Nowicki, Joel Thomas Traywick; and Allison Jones (as Sarny).

The Glass Shield (1994)

"Based on a true story, this highly charged look at corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department focuses on a rookie cop (Michael Boatman) trying to do his job and find acceptance within a racist systb. A murder case involving a black suspect (Ice Cube) brings things to a boiling point. 'Never relinquishing his poetic and highly intelligent sense of character or his inventive mise en scene, Burnett refuses to reduce his drama to the ritualized and oversimplified formats of the standard police procedural thriller' (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). The student is Charles Burnett, and the slaughterhouse worker's story would became the basis for his first feature film, The Killer of Sheep (1977). The film, later called a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress, was among the first fifty films to be placed on the National Film Registry. Burnett thus has some things in common with the characters who people his films, folks who do their best to find good in difficult circumstances.

Charles Burnett was born in 1944 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. His family moved to the Watts area of Los Angeles when he was still quite young, but many of their California neighbors had similar roots and the community was "Southern in culture." He entered UCLA's film department in 1967. Although he was one of the first people of color in the program, he was soon joined by others from diverse backgrounds. These students were creative, energetic, and supportive of one another, and this dynamic environment helped nurture a master. Burnett was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Award (commonly known as the "genius grant") in 1988.

Burnett followed The Killer of Sheep with, among other works, To Sleep with Anger (1990), The Glass Shield (1994), Nightjohn (1996), and the "Warming by the Devil's Fire" episode of Martin Scorsese's The Blues Charlotte, NC, and Athens, GA. Our Brown commemoration will begin with a screening of the Athens segment of The Search for Quality Education - Busing: Some Voices from the South. The documentary, which is part of the University of Georgia Libraries' Peabody Awards Collection, features comments by UGA's Dean William Tate, Clarke County Board of Education attorney Eugene Epting, and Clarke County School Superintendent Charles McDaniel. A segment focusing on Oglethorpe Avenue School includes an interview with Principal Estelle Farmer, footage of Bridget Withers' 4th grade class, and scenes from an Oglethorpe PTA meeting. The program also includes comments by Clarke High School classmates Jan Pulliam, who is Anglo-American, and Leo Scott, who is African American.

Following the screening, we will have a panel conversation featuring:

Monica Knight -Director of the Clarke County School District’s 20th Century Community Learning Centers, Ms. Knight is a Ph.D. candidate in the Social Foundations of Education department.

Evelyn Neeley -- Mrs. Neeley is an Athens area community activist and youth advocate. In a role that depicts America's first president as a daring strategist, Jeff Daniels plays the resolute General George Washington during America's darkest period of the Revolutionary War. At Christmastime in 1776, warned by Congress and his disheartened advisors to retreat from the fast approaching British Army, the unwavering general leads his greatly diminished, frozen, bedraggled, starving troops across the Delaware River and into Trenton in a surprise attack on the elite, Hessian garrison. In their premier skirmish as aggressors, the Continentals win handily without losing a single man, thus marking the turning point in America's fight for independence.

Peabody entry number: 2000076 ENT.

The discussant for our Construction of Government screening is Dr. Allan Kulikoff, Abraham Baldwin Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the University of Georgia. What most people don't know is that it's used not so much to measure the public opinion but to influence and manipulate it. Political pollsters working for the White House and the Republican Party shaped the recent impeachment debate using exactly the same techniques perfected on Madison Avenue to sell potato chips or automobiles. Every word and phrase uttered by the President and by his surrogates on the TV talk shows, and by Republican officials and legislators was tested in advance. Of course, the administration was aware the cameras were present -- and of course, preparations were made for the day. But there is only one West Wing, and the world did not stop. The President and his staff could not control the flow of events, whether it was the explosion of questions about the Enron affair, or the latest suicide-bombing in Israel, which occurred as the Israeli Defense Forces Chief-of-Staff was sitting outside the National Security Advisor's office in the West Wing. But the "Butcher of the Balkans" defeat was incorrectly billed as a one-day revolution; what the global media failed to recognize was the year-long anti-Milosevic campaign waged by Serbian resistance in partnership with pro-democracy and human rights groups. Using exclusive footage and conversations with the principal players, BRINGING DOWN A DICTATOR reveals to the public what major news organizations did not -- the spectacular defeat of Milosevic, not by force of arms, as many had predicted, but by a brilliant nonviolent strategy of honest elections and massive civil disobedience laced with humor and risk. By exploring how the Serb people's success was hastened by technical and financial assistance from the U.S. and European Union, the film also presents American audiences with a model for a foreign policy in support of popular democratic forces which uses strategic nonviolent actions -- rather than bombs -- in the quest to remove authoritarian regimes.
Peabody entry number: 2002033 DCT.

The discussant for our Deconstruction of Government screening is Jack DuVall, Director of the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict. Vernon Johns preached radical sermons that encouraged his parishioners to make a stand against segregation and racism -- a message that his well-to-do black congregation was neither prepared to hear nor ready to act on. As the congregation became more resistant, Johns's defiance of the 'rules and regulations' of segregation became more flagrant, ultimately leading to a showdown in which Johns was forced to resign from the pulpit. Ironically, the congregation chose Martin Luther King, Jr. as Johns's successor, figuring that the young King would be more pliable to the traditional ways of the congregation, and less likely to try to prod them into activism.

This program dramatizes the life of Vernon Johns from the time that he accepted the postion of pastor of the church in Montgomery until his forced resignationand illuminates the racial hatred of the era in Montgomery, Alabama.

Peabody entry number: 94001 ENT.

Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Montgomery, Ala.. (Image from The Blue Highway.)

"MTV's BIORhythm: Martin Luther King, Jr."

"MTV's BIOrhythm is a genre-busting weekly biography series which details the emotional journey of the people it profiles. BIOrhythm not only captures their story, it captures their soul. Much like an opera, BIOrhythm sets a subject's life to music. That 'soundtrack' - along with the subject's own words - narrates the individual's trials and tribulations. And much like a music video, BIOrhythm's visual presentation of the subject matter is fresh and cutting edge. The result is a show which captures the human experience. Universal truths - love, pride, fear, guilt, pain, joy - are the common bonds of humanity. Because the show is emotionally driven and music based, BIOrhythm imparts an especially powerful message to its viewers. For example, instead of telling someone why they shouldn't hate, we allow them to experience first hand the pain of prejudice... In the Martin Luther King, Jr. episode... the fear of being beaten to death because you are black. ... BIOrhythm is not a history lesson. It's a life lesson. One that is universal in its message. One that spans the generation gap. This in turn allows us to create a dialogue of change."--MTV, from 1999 Peabody Awards entry form.

Peabody Awards entry number: 99016 DCT 1/11.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (Image from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.)

"Hosea: In His Own Words"

"Hosea Williams passed away on November 17, 2000 ending the life but certainly not ending the legacy of one of the civil rights movement's most dramatic leaders. Georgia Public Television, early in the year 2000, conducted what we believe was the last extensive interview with Mr. Williams, shortly before he became seriously ill. For nearly ninety minutes Mr. Williams talked about this life as a southern African-American, his early career in Savannah, Georgia and Atlanta as a businessman, how he made his decision to become a civil rights activist, and, finally, his views about the status of blacks and black leaders today in America.

"Upon his death, Georgia Public Television decided to produce a one-hour program with the single purpose of allowing Mr. Williams to talk - without narrator or interviewer - about his life. As he did throughout his life, Mr. Williams tells his story and expresses his opinions in frank and colorful terms, recapturing for the viewers his varied personal experiences during a pivotal time in American history."--GPTV, from the 2000 Peabody Digest.

Peabody Awards entry number 2000223 DCT.

Hosea Williams.
(Image from CNN.)

"Free at Last"

FREE AT LAST celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.'s non-violent philosophy by tracing its roots in the southern black church in America and the teachings and practices of Mahatma Gandhi in India. Extensive use of archival footage of events of the civil rights movement including: the Montgomery bus boycott, freedom rides, Birmingham protests, the 1963 March on Washington, the Selma voting rights protests, the Selma to Montgomery marches, Chicago open housing marches, and the Memphis sanitation strike. In a Medieval example of 'ethnic cleansing', the Jews of Spain were given a choice: expulsion or conversion. Half the community left, half converted. Many of the converted, known as 'Conversos', continued to practice Judaism in secret, establishing a way of life that has, remarkably, survived to the present day. Through extensive interviews with the children of secret believers, the film captures the modern day resurrection of something ethereal - the ghost of a people. The stories of these previously silent people unfold as we watch the phenomenon of a return to Judaism among the descendants of the former Spanish Jews.

Discussion following the screening will be led by Marina Herbst, a graduate student in Romance Languages.

Would you like to know more about "conversos" and the Sephardim?

Tuesday, October 1, 5:30 p.m.
UGA Main Library, Room B-2

Edward James Olmos as El Pachuco. (Image from Hawkins, Shirley. "Entrepreneurs, Zoot Suits Stay Alive, Popular Outfit Still Manufactured by Family Shop." Hispanic Magazine.)

Zoot Suit: The Play and the Promise
Not rated.
(Originally broadcast, 1978, KNXT, Los Angeles, CA)1 hour. Directed by Vincent Di Bona.UGA Libraries Media Archives, Peabody Awards collection, 78024 PST.

Discussion following the screening will be led by Dra. The play is the story of the mass trial of twenty-two Mexican American youths, nicknamed "zoot suiters" for their style of dress, for the murder of another young man in 1942. The documentary mixes scenes from the play, interviews with the playwright, actors, and real life participants in the events of the Forties. Old newsreel footage, headlines, and photographs help give a vivid feel for the wartime years, the trial, the zoot suit riots, and the racism of the period.

Would you like to know more about zootsuiters or Luis Valdez' works?

Thursday, October 3, 7:00 p.m.
Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens

Zoot Suit. (Image from The Zoot.net Store.)

Zoot Suit
Rated R.
(1981)104 mins. Written and directed by Luis Valdez. It is the story of the early 1940's and the conflicts between the dominant culture in Los Angeles and the young Hispanic males moving into the area. Self expression through the "zoot suit" (a man's suit of long jacket and pegged pants, always worn with a long keychain that looped almost to the ankle .... the rebellious fashion of young men) became a particular flash point.

Would you like to know more about zootsuiters or Luis Valdez' works?

Tuesday, October 8, 5:30 p.m.
UGA Main Library, Room B-2

Thursday, October 10, 6:30 p.m.
Athens-Clarke County Library, 2025 Baxter Street, Athens

César Chávez and farmworkers march in Delano, California, 1965. Cháves and his organization used the consumer boycott to win the support of millions of Americans for the farmworkers' fight for social justice, and the first farm labor contracts in American history. The farmworkers drew the support of Robert Kennedy, and were attacked by Ronald Reagan. When growers signed secret deals with the Teamsters Union, the UFW responded with massive strikes and civil disobedience. Finally, the farmworkers engineered the nation's first agricultural labor relations law. Their efforts inspired the Chicano activism of the 60's and 70's, and profoundly changed American society.

Would you like to know more about César Chávez and the farmworkers movement?

Tuesday, October 15, 5:30 p.m.
UGA Main Library, Room B-2

Graphic created by Mary Miller, c2002.

Revolutions on the Radio: People and Issues Related to Revolutionary Movements in Latin America, Audio Gleanings from the Peabody Awards Collection.
30 mins.
Presentation by Laura D. Each year during the last week of October, Mexican communities begin preparations for an age-old festival. For each family, it is a remembrance of a departed loved one. On a larger scale, it also memorializes all ancestral Mexicans and the gifts they passed on to their descendants, especially food and culture. The program focuses on the special foods that are made for this time of year: Sugar Skull candies; pulque; Bread of the Dead; and Mole Poblano. The holiday climaxes on the night of November 1st when family members decorate the grave sites and spend the entire night sitting at the grave site waiting for the 'Ancestors' to return.

Would you like to know more about Days of the Dead celebrations?

Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers Movement: A Selected Bibliography

César Chávez and the Farmworkers Movement: A Selected Bibliography compiled by Laura D.
