He was here Sunday night and Saturday night and Friday night.
He was even here Thursday night.
The only reason he went to his place Wednesday was that it was his night to use the laundry at his four-plex.
Of course, he can do laundry here anytime he wants. I have a brand-new washer and a mostly new dryer in the garage.
But he likes to go home on occasion.
Which is where he is tonight.

But that is good. Right?
As much as I love being together, a little time for ourselves is good, right?

He had some paperwork to deal with at his place.
I had a potluck dish to pull together (lettuce cups. tasty.)

So I am home alone.
Which brings me back to the I-want-him-to-move-in topic...
I do. I want him to move in.
But I also like my me time.

So how do I reconcile those two things? Move in, but leave me alone at least one night a week?

Yeah. Somehow that does not seem right.Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-38418349684805173142008-07-02T21:24:00.000-07:002008-07-02T21:26:16.343-07:00I want to; I can'tI want to ask him to move in with me.
I can't because I am afraid of his answer.

I know that he loves me, in his own way.
He can't say it. He started digging.
He was looking for cans and bottles to recycle.
Why did I suddenly feel so guilty gassing up my cute little German car?
Why did I feel compelled to rummage around my back seat (which looks very lived in) to find a few empty water bottles to add to his collection?
Why did I want nothing more than for the tank to fill more quickly so that I could just go?

Probably because in the back of my mind I was thinking, "there but for the grace of God..."Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-3724412457300238952008-05-31T08:34:00.000-07:002008-05-31T08:59:01.678-07:00Round Robin: Tiny Things
It's time for another Round Robin Photo Challenge.
The challenge this time:

The idea here is to photograph very small inanimate objects
- not details and closeups of larger things, but self-contained
little items we see and take for granted.
It should be interesting to take the expertise some Robins
have with tiny critters, and apply it to objects that can't fly away.
And the rest of us have the photographic challenge of
learning to focus on the miniature world.

Click on the Round Robin link above to get
to the linking list of participants.

Here we go. I am old enough to be your mom. I mean, if I started young. But still..."

Nope.
Last night I was carded at a restaurant when I ordered a beer.
The waitress looked to be in her late 20s.

She carded me.
She did not card the manfriend.Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-35314576488861523412008-05-07T14:15:00.000-07:002008-05-07T14:33:33.174-07:00Not young, not oldI had a birthday.
Am I old?
Am I young?
I am closer to 40 than to 30.
But I still get carded at least once every couple months.
Maybe they are just being kind.
Would I be considered middle-aged?
I don't think of myself that way.
I could do stuff to make myself look and feel younger and better.

In some ways I think I am ahead of the game at this point in life.
In some ways I think I have some catching up to do.

House - check
Kid - um, no
Job - check
Job security - um, no
Husband - well, there was that one guy. Then there was that other guy. So... um, not anymore.

I try not to set deadlines for having things like kids and husbands and houses.
When the good stuff comes along, I try to just enjoy it.
When the bad stuff happens, I try to get through it.

I like to think it is more good than bad these days.

But I do still want the kid. Which I guess means I do still want the husband.

As for the job... I think I would rather just win the lotto.

Since that is unlikely, I guess I will have to make do and keep my fingers crossed.Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-44390597003438805672008-04-30T09:46:00.000-07:002008-04-30T09:55:49.963-07:00DownsizingIn this age of downsizing within my industry, I have decided to do a little downsizing, too.
Specifically my desk at work.
I was thinking about it yesterday after some people were laid off.
They left the building and did not come back up to get their stuff.
There may be people coming in over the weekend to get their stuff. Or someone else may pack it up for them.
Me?
I took a look at my desk to assess what I actually had there.
At my last job I did not have my own desk.
So when I got to a place where I had a desk that was mine, I brought a few things in to decorate.
I have a wall behind me, which is a rare thing in my office. Those spots are great.
I think I have just about the best spot in the room.
But if something happens and I get laid off, I do not want to worry about getting my stuff.
So I have made the decision to bring home anything I would not be willing to leave.
If I get laid off, I want to just walk away from the place.
So I will be bringing home the few pictures I have there.
I will be bringing home a couple of the nicer bowls that I made when I was doing ceramics.
I will bring home my second place award that I got for non-news page design from the Small Newspaper Association. Or something like that.
I cannot remember exactly. But I got it for work I did at my last job.
And I liked that job. I was proud of my work there. So I have the award on my desk.
I also have a couple of design books there that I want to keep.
And that really is about it.
The rest of it I can leave.

Not that I fear my job-loss is imminent.
But I don't feel like this is the most stable place to be these days.

So it is time to go minimalist at work.Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-91270305941663186352008-04-28T16:39:00.000-07:002008-04-28T16:46:13.031-07:00Another sad, scary day at the officeI was not actually even at work today.
But notes from friends Jim and Beth clued me in to the fact that there were more layoffs today.

Me, I am still OK.
No one in my department was cut.
We live to fight another day.

It sounds like it was mostly managers this time.
Some volunteered. Many did not.

I am not sure yet how this will shake out yet.
But as usual we move on and we get the work done each day.

I wish readers knew how much we care about what we do.
I wish they knew that they pick up the paper each day there are people behind that other than the bylines.

We are there. We are there nights and weekends and holidays.
And we care, damn it.Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-68902645536879934412008-04-18T23:40:00.000-07:002008-04-19T17:13:45.368-07:00Round Robin Photo Challenge: Variety Show
It's Round Robin time again!

The assignment is:
Varieties.

Photograph something as viewed as an assortment...
something that comes in different varieties.

For example, it could be a bunch of flowers
or nuts or crayons or birds.

So here we go...

Cookbooks.

I know I have a lot of cookbooks.

This is just a small sample of the
variety of cookbooks I have.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190843810245387250" style="DISPLAY: block; Usually if I take something from there I will read it and then return it in case someone else wants it.

So I found something called "The Wilde Women" by Paula Wall.

It was billed as a tale of sisterly revenge in Tennessee set against the Great Depression.

Cool. Mindless reading. I am down with that.

Overall it was OK. It did not make me want to seek out her previous book that was mentioned on the front and back cover.

It was a bit scattered, with so many peripheral characters. I wanted more about the sisters.

Anyway, it did open with this great passage:

The Lord giveth and most women piss it away. Perhaps this is why they lack the equipment to aim. Some women piddle their life away in a slow incontinent dribble while squatting in the shadow of a man. Others are so busy trying to overshadow men they miss the mark. Most manage to cover up their little messes like a cat scratching in a litter box, but a few always get caught with their pants down. For this reason, Lorna Wilde bestowed upon her daughters the wisdom her mother bestowed upon her, "Never wear holey underwear." Being enterprising young women, the Wilde sisters never wore underwear at all.

Yep. That was the whole opening paragraph.

It should have been my first clue to the rest of the book.

It was not bad. Just a bit overblown.

And she used the same phrases a lot. It was actually quite distracting.

But it was a fast read. I was half way through it by the time the plane landed in Denver and I finished it off before bed last night.
Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-87537384621999799082008-04-05T18:47:00.000-07:002008-04-05T18:50:14.651-07:00Husbands are just too much workI saw this yesterday on MSNBC:

Having a husband creates an extra seven hours of housework each week for women, according to a new study. For men, tying the knot saves an hour of weekly chores.

“It’s a well-known pattern,” said lead researcher Frank Stafford, an economist at University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. “Men tend to work more outside the home, while women take on more of the household labor.”

He points out individual differences among households exist. But in general, marriage means more housework for women and less for men. “And the situation gets worse for women when they have children,” Stafford said.

Overall, times are a’ changing in the American home. In 1976, women busied themselves with 26 weekly hours of sweeping-and-dusting work, compared with 17 hours in 2005. Men are pitching in more, more than doubling their housework hours from six in 1976 to 13 in 2005.

Stafford analyzed time-diaries and questionnaires from a nationally representative sample of men and women over a 10-year period between 1996 and 2005. The federally-funded study showed that, compared with the single life, marriage meant more housework for both men and women.

“Marriage is no longer a man’s path to less housework,” Stafford said.
Single women in their 20s and 30s did the least housework, about 12 weekly hours, while married women in their 60s and 70s did the most — about 21 hours a week. Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-31456990385548867462008-04-04T19:50:00.000-07:002008-04-19T17:14:03.707-07:00Round Robin Photo Challenges: Captioned
The Round Robin this time around was to do
your one perfect scene with a caption.

I know I am early.

I am here Friday night and the posts go up Saturday.

But I am going to be too busy to do this tomorrow.

For days I have been driving by this empty lot.
It is crazy wild with flowers.

But there is a chain link fence around it,
so I figured it would not work.

Then I remembered a lovely saying I saw on a card.

Bloom where you are planted.

Which just goes to show you can find beauty
anywhere if you look at things the right way.

Then the problem became choosing just one flower.

I could not do it.

So my perfect scene is a collage.

Have a beautiful day.

Linking list:

1.Carly - POSTED! They have a daughter who is about a year and a half old.
And while I am very happy and excited for them, I am also a little jealous.

Because I do want to have a baby.
And I do realize that I am getting to that critical time. I will be 37 this May.

And then there is the part of me that just does not want to hear anymore stories about Junior or Susie making a poopie in the pot or learning the sound a cow makes.

Everyone says they will not be that parent who bores friends with story after story about the kid.

And all those people, at least the ones I know, turn into that parent before mom can even push the little spawn out.

Don't get me wrong. I love kids and I find all the silly little things they do cute.
But I don't need to hear about it over and over.

Anyway, I am sure that when I do finally have a child of my own, I will NEVER be that parent.Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-47787990120806978402008-03-22T18:41:00.000-07:002008-04-19T17:14:23.470-07:00Photo hunt: Metal
---------------------

----------------------

I have not done this photo hunt before,
but I liked the topic.

I like photographing metal things.

Here are some from the Evergreen Aviation
Musuem outside Portland, Ore.

They are all parts of airplanes.

Atypical California Girlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11104594940276571192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859280588058892634.post-86364142289120350222008-03-22T09:49:00.000-07:002008-04-19T17:14:33.443-07:00Round Robin: First Signs of Spring
The challenge this time around over at
Round Robin was First Signs of Spring.

I don't want to say we don't get spring in Los Angeles.
But it's really not that dramatic a change
going from season to season here.

But there is one thing that does change here in spring.
The daffodils come poking through.

And they just look so happy,
stretching toward the sun.

This was a bit of a lazy effort for me.
I will try to do better next time.

Here we have a daffodil in my yard.

Daffodil Lament - The Cranberries

Holding on, that's what I do since I met you.
And it won't be long.

As a native Californian, I think I do not.

And no, I do not sound like a Valley girl.

Apparently, according to yet another useless but fun Internet quiz, I sound like I am from the Midland.

Wherever the fuck that is.

Good thing to know I have a voice suited to TV. Too bad I have a face suited to radio.

Ha. Just kidding. Just a little joke at my own expense. My face is OK for TV, it is my big fat ass they would find problematic.
