Life is returning to normal, as normal as UPSIDE DOWN can be! We're in the process of buying our first home, we recently bought a new car, had our first baby, and most recently I returned to work from my maternity leave. Once we're in this house, the SEWING MACHINE comes out of storage! WATCH OUT. I'll be practicing my straight line sewing once again! :) I've been brainstorming new ideas for the shop. I only hope I can some how find the time, or rather, the baby sitter, to allow me a few hours to play. How do you mothers DO it?
<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Still no baby! She is still extremely active and puts on daily shows complete with kicking and the hiccups. My mom had the chance to see a hiccup display and quite enjoyed it. Often times at night while watching netflix with Doug I'll suddenly yell HOLY CRAP!!! Because I think she just tried to kick me in the chin... from my stomach! I told Doug I'm kind of afraid we're going to be one of THOSE parents at the grocery store with a LEASH on our kid because she's so active!
I'm actually feeling very comfortable, physically. I attribute this entirely to having a large frame and being 6'1"...something that allows for all the extra weight and mass to be distributed over a larger area. I feel SO SORRY for my mom though.. at 5'2" she had ME.. and I was a 10 lbs baby who was two weeks late! She had me as a natural home birth and I can't imagine how uncomfortable she must've been! I'm sorry mom!
I also think being heavy has helped me tremendously as well... I already knew what it was like to live with a belly! So things are good...but my patience..well...it's wearing down a bit. I just can't wait to meet this little girl!
Of course there's always the fact that my father is a massage therapist, and I've been receiving a massage once a week since the start of my third trimester. And then there's the 4 days the baby was breech at 37 weeks... I started seeing a chiropractor who is certified in the Webster Technique to help remedy the breech, and have been seeing her ever since. To help flip the baby we also tried acupressure and moxa sticks - it's a mugwort concoction that looks like a giant Chinese cigar and you smoulder it NEXT to your little toe to activate a particular point... just don't do it inside because it smells like pot we found out. Our land lady obviously wouldn't be pleased if she smelled that! I also performed acrobatics while laying on a tilt board (ironing board). Unfortunately that really messed up my back (and bent my board a little! lol Not that I mind that since I HATE ironing! I only have one for my sewing projects!). And did other little things...whatever worked...WORKED. She is in the proper position and ready for birthing! Someone just needs to alert my uterus!

We're all set up (and have been) for quite some time... I'll be taking 3 months off from work and when I do return we're looking to buy our first home. We'll also be buying a new-to-us car as Doug's died in the same painful way mine did this past fall. It's a big year of change (double entendre (sp?)...change as in different and change as in money, get it? GET IT? Oh funnies! :)

I can't wait for this birth to begin...if only for the fact that I'll be having a home birth in a birthing pool in my kitchen... I haven't had a bath since our honeymoon 4 years ago...water is so relaxing for me... I've been tempted to set it up and take a bath in it before having the baby...but sadly I only have one liner for it. <sigh> Oh well! :)

Now... let's get the show on the road!

p.s. If you should find your baby is in the breech position -http://www.spinningbabies.com/ is THE place to go! And good luck!

My quilt top

I wish I could say this was for the little one, but...well, it's not. This one is entirely for me, made with some of my most favorite fabrics in my most favorite of colors. And it's taken me over a year to get this far! I hope I get it finished before the baby comes or else it will likely be another year or two...or three...before its entirely finished.

Check out that awesome Kitchen Aid cozy my mom made me for Christmas! (along with buying me the Kitchen Aid!) And my "Martha Green" mixing bowl on top of the cabinets.

I was sucking in my baby belly so it wouldn't poke through the blanket lol

It was supposed to be the disappearing 9 patch, but ended up staying as a 9 patch for fear of never being complete. I think I chose wisely. It was funny though, I had to run it by my mom, who has held my hand throughout my entire quilt making experiment. I needed reassurance and "permission" to deviate off course - she was very good and supported me and my wild ways. I live life on the edge people. You never know if I'll make a disappearing 9 patch into a regular 9 patch, or maybe a CRAZY 9 patch (I don't actually like that pattern).

Next up: beating this sore throat that's had me down for the past week. And if you're suffering from a sore throat I'd like to let you know that wonton soup feels AMAZING on the throat, as does watermelon. Highly recommended. :)

The trials and tribulations of making your own nursing pads

Maybe this is my version of nesting...since we live in a one bedroom apartment and don't have a designated room for the baby. Maybe it just takes me this long to get things done (shudder). Either way I finished making 4 baby blankets for my bundle of joy that will be joining us in May. I started making the blankets double sided flannel, but then ended up doing one side a nice cool knit, and one side flannel. They turned out to be a really nice weight that way, and my husband and I want a large version for ourselves. I'd show you pictures of the blankets...but I already packed them away until they're needed.

I've also finished a quilt top. I started this more than a year ago. It was going to be a disappearing 9 patch quilt... but it turned into just a regular ol' 9 patch when I realized how long it was taking. I'll post about that another time. I just know my mom is dying to see the photo :)

So my last bit of business is nursing pads! I will be breast feeding our little one, and I will also be returning to work after 12 weeks at home. So I need something to contain the flow of my precious resource. Since I work with the public I need to make sure it wouldn't be too obvious I was stuffing my bra, and I had a few issues coming out with the right mix, so I thought I'd share what I did to create my nursing pads. This is EXTRAORDINARILY SIMPLE... that's just the kind of sewer I am!

To Make Your Own Nursing Pads:

Trace a CD/DVD onto some flannel, I used a regular ol' pen for the tracing bit. You will need 4 circles per pad, a total of 8 circles for a set.

I'm using prewashed flannel that I had left over from making the baby blankets - so these will be some pretty snazzy looking nursing pads! You don't have to worry too much about what color/print because you'll be wearing these inside your bra, underneath your shirt, and possibly another layer. So my elephants and clouds really won't have a chance in the spotlight.

Next step is to sew the stack of 4 flannel rounds together. This is where I had trouble. Other directions on the web said simple sew together, I saw a few pictures using a zig zag stitch, so I tried that. But it left me with lump edges that were evident through my shirt. Now like I said, I work with the public, so this wasn't acceptable.

First failed attempt:

You can see how just lying on the table the pad has a ruffled edge sort of look.

Next I tried sewing a cross in the middle, hoping it would hold things together better and maybe miraculously fix my ruffled edge problem:

That didn't work either. Although lying on the table the ruffled edges aren't as evident as the first try, it was still a problem in the bra. See my bra shots in a dirty mirror as evidence:

You can easily see the difference in how the nursing pads lay... I achieve the "good side" by doing this kind of wavy stitch:

I purposely did not go too near the edge, as to allow for the fabric to fan out by its self, which would hopefully relieve some of the tension this poor little pad had built up. And it worked!

To make them prettier I did trim some of the edges with the pinking shears. Mostly just because I want an excuse to use my pinking shears. Which are actually pink. :)

Using my leftover flannel scraps I managed to pump out 11 sets of these, along with two mistake pads and one lonely pad that doesn't have a mate. I was pretty pumped to use up that flannel. And to actually have CREATED AND FINISHED something. I haven't really had the urge to sew since I found out I was pregnant back in August/September. Winter usually brings it back around though. Especially winter and a good SNOW DAY which is the high I was working with today. Well, that and the fact that I had my "jelly bean test" today. It's an alternative form of the glucola test that my midwife told me about. You have to eat 28 of a specific brand of jelly bean. You must eat all 28 beans within 5 minutes - which is actually harder than it sounds! And then exactly one hour after that have your blood drawn as a Random Glucose Test. This must be done on a fasting stomach first thing in the morning. I thought I would enjoy eating jelly beans for breakfast! But I didn't. But I hear that the glucola is WAY WORSE so I'm happy with what I've got. Now I just have to wait a week or two for the results. I'm really really hoping I don't develop gestational diabetes. Wish me luck!

Little Miss Muffet...

Okay so it's cold, it's BEEN cold, and it will continue to BE very cold until April. Yup, I'm building a baby as we speak and have lost pretty much all interest in everything crafty (but not quite). Instead I've been obsessed with everything baby. You don't notice all the pregnant women around you until you ARE one...but my goodness there are ladies about to PoP! everywhere you go!

I won't be doing any popping until early May, my due date is two days before my birthday (which also falls on Mothers Day this year) it will be a very exciting time of year I'm sure! It's nice because some of the other craft blogs I follow either just had babies, or are having babies very close to when I am... so I'm hoping to get inspired (but mostly ENERGIZED) by them.

I do not know if I'm having a boy or a girl yet... but I cannot wait to find out! I'm also seriously contemplating having a home birth, and my husband and I will be meeting with the home birth midwife in a few days.

I had a short 30 second crying jag on Sunday when I was talking to Doug and suddenly realized that this baby is coming out in 4 months! FOUR months! And we all know where it's coming FROM! Scary but exciting!

So please, pardon my abscence... I'm busy baking! :)

And lastly a picture of my other babies...two of them at least...looking all cuddly. Right now I'm going full steam ahead on zucchini bread and muffins ...I made a healthier version of the bread and will be making a naughty version with chocolate chips in a bit. Here is the recipe for the healthier version (and damn tasty too!) ...

Zucchini Bread
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup all purpose flour
1 cup sugar (this is the worst of it I promise)
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup grated zucchini
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup applesauce
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Cooking spray to spray loaf pan

Combine all ingredients until mixed well, pour into a loaf pan and bake at 350 for 60 minutes. Makes a delicious treat suitable for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack or dessert!

Also...try this if you like crab cakes and have lots of zucchini to use up...its a faux crab cake that YES does taste like crab even though its made with zucchini. I loooove it. :)
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Connies-Zucchini-Crab-Cakes/Detail.aspx

The onesies found a home!

My mom made this dress! Post on etsy: note cards, button brooches, bobby pins, lg. photos, sm. photos

2. MAke xmas stuffed ornaments

3. Cut up scraps and make bundles

4. (already did this earlier this week so it doesnt count)

5. Buy more blank cards and envelopes ad black sequins/ colored sequins

6. Create designs for recipe cards

7. Create shrinky-dink designs and print

I did #1(except button brooches but only because I think I'll use them as a freebie with order) # 5 (then i realized i already had sequins i could use so didnt buy more)

alright...so I didn't get as much done as hoped, except that you have to realize I also varnished mushrooms all day long, took photographs of ALL of these things, added them to flickr and edited where needed, as well as package cards... I'd like to think I was productive today. :)

So here are some pictures of the things I've been working on:

I even put some of my photographs on etsy..

Have I mentioned how fun Picnic is in Flickr? I think my parents might like one (if you knew them, you'd understand...just to giv eyoua hint, my dad quotes Lovelace...that's his name, right? I don't know I haven't watched it 50 times like they have lol).

So, I've been busy, but not with picture taking to share..so take my word for it when I say:

...Yes, the MONTHS ago mentioned mushrooms are still around..

I've also finished some snazzy fabric covered button hair pins that I'm quite fond of and having a hard time letting go..

I've made 2 versions of 3835...this is a big deal because my mom and I (and the copy guy at Staples) worked very hard to increase her size 20 pattern to something that would fit a plus size gal like myself...and its worked, hopefully I'll get around to posting about that at some point in time

I made a circle skirt out of a pink thrifted knit bed sheet

O! And I made a beautiful shirt (with LOTS of help from my mom... this took me 9 hours to make over three days ...whew being a beginner sewer is HARD!) (my shirt is like the green one in the lower right) I almost forgot to mention, I made this first shirt in a knit fabric...and I have a woven fabric all cut out and ready for sewing, I'll have to show you the difference once I get the second one made. (BTW if you use this pattern and you're a busty girl, you'll JUST squeak by, but you may be more comfortable adding an inch above the elastic).

In other news... I appliqued some fabric badges via Angry Chicken for a sweet baby shower gift and my gift was the only one passed around the baby shower for everyone to admire...people were yelling out across the room to me DID YOU MAKE THESE?!?! (yes thank you and it was quite easy!).

I'm supposed to be working on more right now actually...my cousin Jane is having herself a baby in the beginning of September and I had so much fun making the others, I wanted to make her some too. It worked out well too because both my friend Sue and my cousin Jane chose not to know the sex of their babies so my baby fabrics are gender neutral. I promise to post pictures once I ge the next batch done. That much I think I can handle!

So, next time I post, I promise to post with pictures of some if not all of the above mentioned projects. Okay, now you share...

You asked for it! Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 20-25 minutes (22 minutes is perfect for me).
To make them "Surprise" Muffins you fill up your muffin tin half way, put in about a teaspoon of jelly/jam (in my case my homemade freezer jam thank you very much!) and then top with remaining muffin batter. Don't worry about it covering every nook and cranny of jelly....it will seep out in some way or another - top, bottom, sides...it will find a way!

These are SUPER YUMMY warm with a bit of butter on it...that's how my husband likes it. It said "tastes like a pop tart!". For a treat once in awhile he'll buy a box of unfrosted pop tarts, put them in the toaster and then spread butter on it...I just think that's all weird. But not when its butter on Surprise Muffins! :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://turtlemoss.blogspot.com/2008/07/you-asked-for-it-here-it-is.html' title='You asked for it! By doing it now my kitchen won't go over 100 degrees and start melting everything within a 15 foot radius. I've also been reading Tightwad Gazette II and III (yes both at the same time! I completed the first Tightwad Gazette this past winter) and in an attempt to save a little cash I made my own muffins this morning - which took all of 10 minutes. I even made them with half white flour and half whole wheat (practicing what I preach...mypyramid.gov says half of your grains for the day should be whole grains!). I made them "Surprise Muffins" which is what my dad used to call Jam-in-the-middle-Muffins....and I loved them. It reminds me of my dad and the little things he used to do for me as a kid...like make yummy surprise muffins! And yes, I did use the Strawberry freezer jam that I made last week! :) OR the week before? How long ago did I make this stuff now??? And since I'm a LAZY cook I decided to use my food processor to make homemade pizza dough, using Cuisinart.com's recipe I made a total of four dough balls and labeled them and put them in the freezer for later. I feel pretty good! By the way...in the Tightwad Gazette it does a break down of how much the muffin recipe costs and its $.04 per muffin. Now this is back in the early/mid '90's, and I used a slightly different recipe. But it just goes to show you that the Jimmy Dean D-Lights that Come 4 to a box for $6, are SUCH A RIP OFF compared to homemade, fresh SURPRISE MUFFINS! :) (madewithsuperawesomehomemadestrawberryfreezerjam!)
Or if you're also into simplifying your life (which is also a subject I read up on this past winter) get the Complete volume.

Ok enough book pushing for now.
Don't forget!
If you want in on the *Vintage Necklave Giveaway* you should enter ASAP by responding in the comment section of the previous post. Don't forget to leave your email address so I can let you know you're the winner! Thought I could interest you in a free drawing for a vintage glass beaded necklace? It is a beauty, but unfortunately not my size or color or style. I'm a tree trunk-neck-not yellow-tee shirt wearing kind of girl...this is far too glamous for me! If you're interested in receiving a restrung vintage necklace leave a comment and I'll pick from the huge amounts of people that visit my blog next Sunday 7-13-08. The necklace measures 23" long. ***Make sure you leave your email address so I can let you know you're the winner!***

In other news: I'm a huge copycat! I too made freezer jam this year... I went strawberry picking with a friend last weekend and worked on freezer jam twice this week. I picked 10 quarts of berries and didn't mean to make it all into jam. But I got carried away with the food processor and before I knew it! Ops! I processed it ALL! All 10 quarts! I did manage to put some plain and slightly sugared berries in the freezer so as well as having fresh jam we also can have some yummy strawberry shortcake anytime we want...as long as you don't mind it chewed up by the food processor! I also didn't get a single good picture, I was playing

with the functions on my camera I have no idea what c1 and c2 mean...but they don't take good pictures that's for sure! So admire the colors, and ignore the lack of focusing.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://turtlemoss.blogspot.com/2008/07/giveaway-give-away-one-word-two-ack.html' title='Giveaway! I had trouble transfering my Google Reader list over here so I just did a select few that are my absolute FAVORITE blogs to visit (since I had to link to them one by one because while blogger is nwo in the correct century they still can't get the darn thing to work right!).

Anyways I just wanted to show off. It feels like when our family got our first color tv..I want to say it was in '89? The first thing I watched was Beauty and the Beast...you remember the one...with Linda Hamilton? Yeah, I had great taste. :)
