Google recently celebrated its 10th birthday. As we participated in the festivities, we realized that we are coming upon another birthday: In just a few weeks, our very own Google Toolbar will be turning 8 years old. To celebrate, we wanted to take a few moments to reflect on its evolution over the past few years and how we've tried to make the web a better place for the hundreds of millions of people who use Toolbar.

Back in 1999, the Internet was a very different place. At that time, you had to fight annoying pop-up ads that would randomly appear as you navigated from one page to another. You had to fill in endless forms with your personal information in order to create accounts for websites you wanted to use. And when you wanted to find information on your airline's luggage policy, you spent more time finding the right search terms to get you there than actually packing for your trip. The Toolbar team was formed to develop tools to make your web experience better, so we created features like pop-up blocker and AutoFill. We also built a dynamic search box that automatically guesses what you're typing and offers search suggestions in real time (click on the image to see larger).

Over the years, we've been proud to see several of the features we've pioneered integrated into web browsers as well as other websites. We're encouraged by this progress, but this doesn't mean that our mission is complete. We're still working hard to make the time you spend on the web more enjoyable and productive. On that note, we'd like to announce our latest release of Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, now launching out of beta and available in 40 languages.

How to Import a Large MySQL Database

A number of times I have been unable import a big database through cPanel or phpmyadmin because of its sheer size?

So, how do you import a big MySQL database?

The problem is caused by the PHP configuration file on the server, generally limiting maximum file upload size to 2mb, causing Import, Restore methods to fail.

The answer is taking a Big Dump! No, I don't mean you need to do a big poo, you need the nifty script BigDump, written by Alexey Ozerov specially for importing large databases.

-:- Go and download your BigDunp: http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump.zip
-:- Unzip it and upload both bigdump.php and your_database.sql to the same directory via ftp (Both bigdump.php and your_database.sql* MUST be uploaded with ASCII (text) mode)
-:- open bigdump.php via any editor and edit your system variables. Save it.
-:- Access via Browser your bigdump.php file: http://www.yourdomain.com/bigdump.php
-:- Now select the file to be imported from the listing of your working directory

It works with .sql and GZip but not RAR files. If you have a .rar file, unzip it and upload the .sql file. Ensure you have enough web hosting space allocated.

Be patient! DO NOT CLOSE THE BROWSER WINDOW UNTIL IMPORTING IS FINISHED. Mine simply displayed a white screen page, but all 167,468 records in one table had been imported.

How to open large MySQL files - SCiTE

I've long had this issue not being able to open large files, typically MySQL files.

Applications bundled with Windows, such as notepad and wordpad just don't cut it - I think because they read the entire file to memory before opening.

Then I found Scintilla's SCiTE.. WOW! I downloaded the file for Windows, unzipped it and opened a 246mb MySQL file in seconds.

Very impressive stuff! And as I was so impressed, I decided to take a tour and found that it supports syntax highlighting in all the popular programming languages, as well as many I've never before heard of. It even has code collapsing as standard.

Last November, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo united to support sitemaps, a standardized method of submitting web pages through feeds to the search engines.

Today, the three are now joined by Ask.com in supporting the system and an extension of it called autodiscovery. This is where the major search engines will automatically locate your sitemaps file if the location is listed in a robots.txt file.
