In support to Aklan Day 53rd Foundation Day - few of us were
present and were able to parade for almost 3 hours under the strong heat of the sun
on the morning of April 25, 2009. Good thing we were joined by our
Rotary kids Clouds and Marma??? Marma is no longer a kid hehehe
just small hehehe

to attend to the election of officers of RCC Malogo, New Washington.

He is being handshaked by current President - Rosie Magallanes.

After the event last April 18, 2009 CONCERT FUNDRAISING OF STAC, we have to send off many guests who joined the event and was not able to make it during our family day cruising Lagatic River. District Assembly (DISTAS) 2009

Rotary International District 3850 held its Sectional District Assembly (DISTAS) 2009 for all Rotary clubs in Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4 last April 4, 2009 at the Hotel del Rio, Iloilo City. It was hosted by the Rotary Club of Metro Iloilo and presided by Incoming District Governor Edgar “Diotay” Sy and Incoming District Trainer Past District Governor Ma. Victoria “Nanette” Garcia.

The purpose of the District Assembly is to prepare incoming club leaders for their year in office and build their leadership team. It addresses the following topics for each club officer and committee chair participating in the training: the new RI theme; roles and responsibilities; policies and procedures; selecting and training the team; and developing long-range and annual goals.

Encouraged to attend were the Club Presidents-elect (required to attend both PETS and district assembly), Club committee chairs (especially for membership, public relations, club administration, service projects, and The Rotary Foundation), Incoming club secretary, Incoming club treasurer, and other interested members of the different Rotary clubs.

The Sectional DISTAS 2009 was a one-day seminar and the Rotary Club of Kalibo led by Incoming President Joel Mercurio was ably represented by twelve (12) incoming officers and club directors (recognized for the highest attendees from all the clubs, excepting the host club). It culminated with a fellowship in the evening with cocktails and free drinks.

Surely, the Sectional DISTAS 2009 was a good way to jumpstart the coming Rotary Year for the incoming club officers of RC Kalibo. Let us all join together in our club’s effort to make a difference in the lives of the less-privileged sectors of our community because truly, The Future Of Rotary Is In Your Hands (R.I. Theme 2009-2010).

President's Message - Budyong April 14, 2009

For as long as a child realizes his mistake, failure is a good thing at times. Failures in life are what actually inspire us to do even much better. It gives us greater passion to excel even more. However, this is not true to all. It only happens to those who are able to take failure as a learning experience and not fall into a depression. It is true to those who are pushed to have greater passion and inspiration to succeed because of failure.

I guess everyone was well rested and have battery recharged for like nearly a week vacation during the holy week? I hope so. We all deserved a good break, huh!

For myself, I did have a great holy week, unfortunately, not all serious. I was shooting many birds in one stone so to they say. With some VIP’s around and bringing them to Boracay for R & R is not enough because it’s still work for me. While in the island, some old friend/s way back ages ago called me and begged I have to stay another night in the island and talk about promising projects. I was flattered that they still remember me after many years. I did stayed, then another night and the overnight became too many nights of business meetings with good hearted people where we talked about--- guess what? ROTARY!!!!!! It was an additional flattery that they are following our blogs and saw every inch of what we are doing in ROTARY and part of their itinerary is to actually get in touch with me. Now, that is real friendship.

Can’t get away with ROTARY everywhere you go. But these are friends who have a good heart and are with me since even before I joined Rotary and we are all in one, one for all in our quest to serve the community. There are just some unavoidable circumstances that they have some priorities to take charge in some other parts of the globe which needs urgent help. As they say, we can’t count the chickens until they lay eggs, so for now, let us make our fingers crossed for some future promising projects especially to MAKE DREAMS REAL for our adopted STIMULATION & THERAPEUTIC ACTIVITY CENTER (STAC) handicapped but gifted children. If the project becomes successful in the future, we hope to see dramatic transformation with STAC and we hope to realize that “HOMELESSNESS IS NOT HOPELESSNESS AND DISABILITY IS NOT INABILITY.”

Please be reminded that these children are the reason why we are working hard this RY 2008-09. They gave hope and motivations to do more even beyond our imagination. Wish some of you have visited them and you will feel what I feel. God is good and in many times this Rotary year, I have experienced all HIS GOODNESS for this club and our projects. If you are witness to that, it is because you are with me.

To some, this maybe an impossible dream, to those who believe in the reality of our dreams, THANK YOU - that’s all that matters to me as your club president and to the community we serve.

This APRIL 18, it would be very significant to your humble servant to see you support the event of STAC and for STAC. Rtn. Joanna and myself would greatly appreciate your presence and the impact of it to our adopted beneficiary….for EVERY DISABLED CHILD MATTERS.

May I continue to thank my fellow Rotarians who in one or another, small or big have so far contributed to the event - to buying the tickets, helping out sell the tickets and passing the words to others to support the event. There are even NON-ROTARIANS out there who remain humble and anonymous and are the usual supporters to any of our cause and that is greatly appreciated.

To PDG TOTO CUA LOCSIN and family, thank you for the wonderful treat at the REGENCY HOTEL in the island of BORACAY. To our new found friends Rtn. Manu Melwani of RC Guam; MIKE and NIEVA from the UNITED NATION headquarters, now owned a paradise resort situated in the only cove in the island and is our future partners, it was a pleasure to fellowship with you guys..and the mouthwatering but healthy food you served…our VIP’s couldn’t ask for more, except they nearly proposed a marriage to CHEF MIKE and everyone would agree to that hehehe but he has to choose one of us though; to RTN. RITA and SPS. CON whom we will miss when they leave soon for ROMANIA for good, thank you guys for all the support and warm reception every time I come to your place. I can’t wait to see you there once I am decided to take your offer. It would be a wider horizon for me out there. As usual, anything was made possible by PP DEL NANO of RC BORACAY…she can make a good deal even at the last minute request. We move mountains in Rotary (wink). It was nice meeting PP Del Sps. Jason from UK, too and all of a sudden, I missed Rtn. Lew because the whole time, we talked about his fave English food that Lew loves to eat, too . The whole week was a great deal of a fellowship reunion – all for ROTARY.

There is no other happiness in this world than to have GREAT, GOOD HEARTED FRIENDS who help and are supportive of your cause without thinking of anything in return but only to PAY IT FORWARD. Also, these are real people in the real sense of the world. Good thing, we belong to the same ship – SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Lord, I thank You for the Good News of Your glorious resurrection. It gives me joy, courage and hope. You have defeated evil and death and You will defeat it for me as long as I cling to You and follow You loyally. Amen.

The magazine you hold in your hands is one of Rotary’s oldest traditions. In January of 1911, a 12-page newsletter called The National Rotarian was published; it contained an essay by Paul Harris, “Rational Rotarianism,” along with club news and editorials. Of the new publication, Harris wrote: "The primary purpose of The National Rotarian is to provide a means for the exchange of ideas between Rotarians throughout the world, not to give the national officers an opportunity to express their views. These messages are not written merely to fill space; nevertheless we look forward to the day when they will be literally crowded out by surging mobs of virile Rotarian ideas struggling to be heard."

Today, with Rotary’s club membership spanning more than 200 countries and geographical areas, the mandate of its publications is more complex, and more vital, than ever. The English-language flagship magazine, The Rotarian , is edited at RI headquarters in Evanston, Ill., USA, and has a circulation of about 500,000. Around the world, 31 more magazines are published in 24 other languages, for a total of 32 magazines published by the Rotary World Magazine Press, and a total circulation of about 1.25 million.

The RI Board of Directors has designated April of every year as Magazine Month. It is a time to recognize the role that our Rotary publications play in our Rotary lives – and the role that we should play in our publications. For the magazines to live up to Paul Harris’ original vision, it takes more than just an editorial staff: It also takes the good work of Rotarians. I always feel that the best part of reading any Rotary publication is the opportunity to find out what other clubs are doing. Each issue, each article, is a chance to be informed and inspired.

In an era when electronic communication seems to be everywhere, the role of the paper-and-ink magazine is still important to our organization. Rotary magazines provide us with an overview of what’s happening in different clubs and districts as well as important news and updates from RI headquarters. Even the many Rotarians who regularly visit www.rotary.org will find something new in every issue.

It is a privilege today to be writing this message as Paul Harris once wrote his, and to see his vision of this publication – a magazine filled with the great ideas and great works of Rotarians – brought to life.

Message from the Chair – Let’s End Polio Now

Dear family of Rotary,

In January, Rotary International received another influx of funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing that organization’s total contribution to Rotary’s polio eradication efforts to $355 million. In turn, the Gates Foundation has asked Rotarians to match $200 million of that amount. For many organizations, this might seem an impossible task, especially in today’s uncertain economy. But we all know that Rotarians are both generous contributors and master fundraisers.

Our support, however, goes far beyond simply donating money for a good cause. Polio eradication has become a passion for so many Rotarians, a goal that can and must be achieved. And now is the time to achieve it.

Never has Rotary had such strong support in our war on polio. In addition to the funding from the Gates Foundation, World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan has put the full operational power of the WHO into the job of finishing polio eradication. And two governments have made impressive commitments: The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development has pledged £100 million ($150.3 million) for polio eradication over the next five years, and the German government has committed €100 million ($132.3 million). Although this funding is not directed toward meeting Rotary’s challenge, it will help us to move more swiftly toward our goal.

Now is our opportunity to capitalize on all these resources and get the job done. We can’t wait until the economic conditions improve to continue our fight. We must move ahead now. And that means meeting Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge. It is up to our clubs and districts, to each one of you, to make that happen. I encourage you to set ambitious but achievable goals for your club’s contribution to the challenge. Create fundraisers that involve the whole community, letting everyone know that Rotarians are leading the fight to End Polio Now.

BRAVO and HURRAY!

We had a long day and long night DISTAS and FELLOWSHIP last April 4, 2009 at Hotel Del Rio, Iloilo City. We always look forward to the learning opportunity every time the next Rotary year is coming.

The purpose of the District Assembly is to prepare incoming club leaders for their year in office and build their leadership team. Thank you to our (me and Sec. Geri of RC Bora) host and good company P. Richard and Sps. Trisha and children during our first night and to IDG Edgar SY for the 2nd night. Also, to PDG Nanette for a very well organized DISTRICT ASSEMBLY being the District Trainer. It is always fun to work with you, our Centennial and motherly DG hehehe Keep Smilin'...

Greetings of Peace!

In behalf of the members of the Rotary Club of Kalibo, we CONGRATULATE you our partners in service – INTERACTORS/ROTARACTORS for your strong commitment to service. “We may have to sacrifice a dream or two, but if you learn to live happily with the choice you made, then life cannot be better.”

It is with regret that I cannot join you on your most important milestone, your high school graduation. However, while I am with the family event then, rest assured that my heart’s gratitude is with you all.

There is nothing stronger than the heart of a VOLUNTEER. To all of you graduates – WE SALUTE YOU!

Remember that SERVICE is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do on your spare time. Please keep the Rotary Wheel moving and the spirit of service remains in your heart.

Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS)

Rotary International District 3850 holds its Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) March 21-22 at the Hotel Parklane House in Cebu City. To be led by Incoming District Governor Edgar “Diotay” Sy, attending from the Rotary Club of Kalibo are Incoming President Joel Mercurio and Past President Vic Santamaria (incoming Assistant Governor for Zone 4 comprising of Rotary Clubs of Aklan and Capiz).

Rotary club presidents-elect worldwide will be attending the presidents-elect training seminar (PETS) in March. The presidents-elect training seminar helps presidents-elect from the more than 32,000 Rotary clubs worldwide to prepare for their terms. At the seminar, incoming club presidents learn about their roles and responsibilities, goal setting, club administration, and member recruitment, education, and retention. The meeting is an opportunity for incoming club presidents to build strong working relationships with their district governor-elect and incoming assistant governors.

The presidents-elect training seminar (PETS) can help make a president’s year one of the best of his or her Rotary career, which can help make it a productive year for the club. As presidents-elect return from their PETS, they should prepare for their district assemblies by finalizing committee chair assignments and distributing the materials in the Club Officers’ Kit. This is also a good time to meet with the incoming club leaders to discuss annual goals and develop or revise your club’s strategic plan. Presidents-elect can also begin talking to district leaders to discuss ideas for service projects and strategies for achieving club goals.

District assemblies (DISTAS) are held in April and May and cover topics such as public speaking and leadership and build leadership teams. The district assembly builds upon what is covered at PETS by using goals established during PETS as guidelines to be finalized with other club leaders during district assembly.

For once in her life, she had never dreamt the position you have entrusted to her. However, as soon as she put commitment to what she took oath of, she gave her utmost best. Even before she became club president, she already was doing the things we are supposed to do as committed Rotarian. When she became club president, she surely worked doubly hard because she knows it’s her term and is expected to work harder than anybody else in the group.

This column once and for all you have to hear her side and the reality of being club president this year. If anyone of you can remember that your humble servant did not seek this position at all. In fact, nobody wants this position and like anybody else, nobody loves it at all. (Unless there is some objection out there?)

There is struggle when you become club president. You are under pressure and in the scrutiny of others like in my case – for the first time, a lady president, huh! But indeed, it is a privileged. It is easy for others to say then, “I will help you, I will be behind you…” But I tell you the truth, for most of those who said it, it was easier said than done. She believes this is a volunteer organization, therefore there is no pressure for anybody here. To trust members for their initiative and collective support is the most important.

She will say it again, when she became a Rotarian, never was she motivated of anything else but to help and serve. Service here is not all about money, it’s also your skills and ability to make things happen despite the obstacle of not having so much resources from your pocket. Service is about network of friends who believes in your cause. And to be able to serve better, you have to attend loads of training, conferences, fellowship and even to browse elbows with different characters with strange personalities. But the challenge is - how to get their trust for you to be able to solicit their time, resources and effort to join you in your cause and in what you believed in.

No matter how afraid she was to lead a prestigious club, the only thing that matters to her is to answer the question, “why I am a Rotarian?” in the first place. The only weapon she has to start with was FAITH. First of all, to GOD ALMIGHTY, faith to herself and faith in YOU – the members of the club. She believes that no matter what happen, you will be there for her in warm bodies or spirit. “Have faith, knowing tomorrow will hold the blessings of God.”- Robert Schuller, Jr.

The easiest way to do is either hide or run away. In all honesty, she nearly did. The outburst of Typhoon Frank is another challenge to hurdle and she opted to stay. It is a commitment, it has to be delivered. “It is GOD who only knows the reason behind every journey. In the end, it is not how much wealth and power you have. It is how we touched the lives of people we met during our journey on earth.” And that to her is the best motivation in her journey to this road less traveled.

If the human being can’t forgive her for once she made a mistake, then she would rather be concerned of the forgiveness from above. You can’t please everybody in this earth. The things that matters most, that at the end of the day, you say to yourself, “I HAVE DONE MY PART BY PAYING IT FORWARD to those who needed it most.”

Your humble servant have many times crossed river, hike up in the mountain, risk life and even friendships, gave up a good offer abroad, forget about family gatherings, abandoned her job and literally not a wealthy club president. But in spite all of these, she has succeeded to put up all projects thru her network of friends and connections in Rotary and non-Rotary organizations, even from individual philanthropists whom she has not met in person. You never heard anything worst yet in this journey. She can only tell you in person. One thing is for sure, she will remain poor in the next years to come to be able to pay back her credit cards hehehe

Traveling, meeting new friends and sensing new opportunity to be able to serve is the only fun part of this term, though not in terms of our pocket. But with good friends around, it can be possible. Of course in the end, the most important is the community you serve. Everything that had happened in this term is because of FAITH, FAITH AND FAITH. “More often than not, God will expect us to put our trust in Him and simply ‘get on with our lives!”

To our fellow Rotarians PP Noli, Sps. Pres. Glo, PP Botoy, Rtn. Joanna and our good friends in Rotary (who remains anonymous) who helped me move around during Matt Monro Jnr.’s visit to STAC Bldg and our handicapped children, motorcade, press con and feeding us and Matt’s party, MARAMING SALAMAT PO SA INYO!!!

I would still humbly ask anyone of you who are interested to join us in the concert for a cause, tickets are now available with Rtn. Joanna Tay Meren at STAC office. For those of you of who will support it, thank you for you will make the club president’s birthday the most wonderful celebration ever in her life. And just think of our handicapped children – LET’s together MAKE DREAMS REAL for them. The date is APRIL 18, 2009 @ 7 PM, ABL Sportscomplex, Capitol, Kalibo.
