Dear Friend,

Since Friday a week ago, Texans from all backgrounds and all regions have asked me to consider running to be our next Governor of Texas. Yesterday afternoon I announced that I'd consider running for Governor and will make a decision by Friday, December 4th.

I wanted to say how much I appreciate your support in my Senate race. Thank you for bringing momentum to this campaign for Texas' future.

I'm writing to let you know what's on my mind. Both our next Governor and our next Senator must bring new energy to the task of moving our state forward. In both positions, we need leadership that can bring our state together and reduce the strident partisanship in Austin and Washington.

As I'm considering how I can best serve our state and how we can work together to move our state forward, I'd like to hear your opinion. Your advice and counsel are needed now more than ever.

CONN'S SETTLES CLAIMS OF QUESTIONABLE BUSINESS PRACTICES WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL!

THE COMPANY IS COUGHING UP $4.5 MILLION TO MAKE IT GO AWAY!

Press Release: Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today resolved the states enforcement action against Conns, Inc. In May, Conns was charged with failing to honor product warranties, misleading customers about the nature of its products, false advertising and other violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

According to the states enforcement action - and information contained in more than 3,500 customer complaints - the defendant unlawfully relied on aggressive and deceptive sales tactics to increase its extended service warranty sales for appliances, electronics and other products. The agreement reached today requires Conns to reform its business practices and pay $4.5 million in restitution for its customers.

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, todays agreement fundamentally reforms how Conns does business, Attorney General Abbott said. Under its agreement with the state, Conns must remedy its high pressure sales tactics, refrain from misleading customers about extended warranties, and fully honor the warranty agreements that it sells to customers. By redressing of improper conduct and setting aside restitution, this agreement benefits past, present and future Conns customers.

According to state investigators, Conns instructed sales personnel to rely on high-pressure tactics to overcome objections voiced by customers who declined to purchase extended warranties. The states May enforcement action also indicated that Conns failed to provide customers with a copy of the warranty agreement at the time of sale. As a result, purchasers were not adequately informed about exclusions, limitations, cancellation penalties and other provisions governing their warranty agreements.

In an agreement reached today, Conns agreed to provide customers a copy of the extended warranty agreement at the time of sale. Conns also must ensure that its sales personnel accurately represent rights, remedies or obligations contained in the extended warranty agreements.

Under todays agreement, Conns must also refrain from adding extended warranty or credit insurance products to customers invoices without their written consent. Extended warranty agreement provisions will protect existing customers because the agreement applies to both existing and future extended warranties.

The states May enforcement action charged Conns with failing to fulfill its warranty obligations. According to customer complaints obtained by the Office of the Attorney General, Conns delayed repair appointments for weeks or even months, failed to repair items to working condition, ignored calls, and ultimately, refused to give refunds or replace the defective products. Todays agreement stipulates if a product fails within 72 hours of purchase or delivery to a customers home, Conns must replace the product with an identical or similar model. If the product fails at the time of delivery, the Conns delivery team must remove the product and exchange it.

Finally, the agreement requires Conns to compensate customers who were harmed by its unlawful content. As a result, Conns must pay $4.5 million to establish a customer restitution fund. Todays agreement also requires Conns to pay $250,000 in attorneys fees and $100,000 to the University of Houston Consumer Law Clinic.

In the coming weeks, the Office of the Attorney General will review customer complaints and other data to determine how it will administer the restitution fund. Customers with questions should call (800) 252-8011 or visit the attorney generals Web site at www.texasattorneygeneral.gov.

FROM HPD: Rush hour commuters and fans attending tonight’s Texans' game at Reliant Stadium are encouraged to avoid traveling on South Main Street (Highway 90) where workers are cleaning up a train derailment near Stella Link that forced closure of all north and southbound lanes on
South Main.

All northbound lanes on South Main just reopened a short time ago.

However, all southbound lanes on South Main remain closed from Stella Link to South Post Oak Road. Houston police officers on the scene are being told only two of four southbound (outbound) lanes are likely to be reopened sometime in the 4 o’clock hour.

As a result, HPD encourages motorists to not travel on Highway 90 south to get home or to the football game, and instead use Highways 288 and 59 South to the 610 South Loop.

DPS SHUTTING DOWN ACADEMY DORMS!

CONCERNS OVER SAFETY PROMPTED THE CLOSURE!

Citing a concern for the safety of residents of the DPS Training Academy, members of the Texas Public Safety Commission voted unanimously Thursday to immediately close the two aging dormitories, which were built in 1955 and 1972. All students will be moved to a nearby motel for the immediate future.

“We take the safety of our employees and students seriously and will do what we must do to provide them with a secure, safe sleeping environment,” said Steven C. McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Inspections of the facility by the State Fire Marshal’s Office for the past eight years have noted the deficiencies, but most of the recommendations have not been implemented because of funding constraints.

Improvements to bring the buildings up to Life Safety Code for fire safety—includes a fire alarm and sprinkler system, a fire suppression system for the cafeteria and enclosing stairwells—would likely cost several million dollars. Compounding these issues, the high concentration of calcium in the buildings’ pipes over the years has caused the flow of hot water to almost cease. Repairing this critical infrastructure issue will require considerable funding to abate.

The DPS dormitory houses students in the recruit school, as well as other DPS employees who travel from across the state to attend training classes or other meetings in Austin. The dormitory can house up to 417 people and includes a cafeteria where meals are served.

This comes after Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison decided recently not to resign her position in Congress to focus on her gubernatorial bid. That left Bill White with a big war chest and nothing to do with it. Apparently, after some soul searching White has made up his mind to be the
big name Democrat in the bid for Governor of Texas. A state that hasn't elected a Democrat since Ann Richards back in 1991 - 95. What do you think of White's latest choice? By the way, Fort Worth businessman Tom Schieffer is expected to drop out today clearing the way for White as the top Dem in the race. White is also expected to release a statement later today on the issue!

Black Friday is no longer the exclusive battleground for department stores, clothing shops and electronics stores. Some unexpected players -- hit hard by the recession -- are getting involved this year to try to fight the effects of the recession.

QVC, the shopping network, is jumping in this year, starting Thanksgiving night, with host Dave James planning to stay awake for 28 hours of telethon-like coverage. In the past, QVC has treated Black Friday as another shopping day, but this time it plans a televised marathon and will offer three "special value" items to customers, instead of the normal one per day.

Auto dealers also have largely skipped Black Friday. Not this year. "Not only is Black Friday the best day of the month to buy a car," says Truecar.com, which tracks the actual cost of cars. "But it is the best day of the YEAR to buy a new car." It says the discounts from dealers and incentives from manufacturers will offer some whopping savings, averaging around 7.5%. I knew exactly what was happening as this man and little boy quickly slipped out of an older model Lincoln Continental at the Shell on I-45 in Spring. The man quickly dragged the kid in a bee line to many of the unsuspecting customers pumping gas. His game? He told each person he and his son had run out of gas and they needed a way to get back to Conroe. They went from person to person until they got to me. I asked him didn't they just get out of that Lincoln that went behind the building. I told him it didn't appear to be out out of gas. He then tried to explain to me they were just dropped off. But I told him the female driver was standing in front of the Shell with a red shirt on. He looked back at the woman then at me again. He had that look like "yeah buddy you got me but I'm moving on to the next sucka." I felt really bad for the child who was apparently being used for this scam to hustle money. Make sure you just say no. The quicker you do, the faster that kid will be taken home out of the streets begging for money!

Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt is sending a warning this holiday season: Be careful out there. This is the time of the year thieves are looking to take advantage of unsuspecting Houstonians. I know from experience. It was back in 2005 when someone broke into my vehicle and stole hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. So, if you don't want to be victimized make sure you pay close attention to your surroundings and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those material things you love so much. HPD even went out to local grocery stores and checked some empty vehicles where the driver was shopping. They found several examples where people left their valuables in clear view. Make sure you heed the warning and place all of your valuables out of sight. With that said, be very careful this holiday season because the thieves will try to take advantage of you!

JUST IN TIME DURING VERY TOUGH TIMES IN HOUSTON!

It has become a monthly tradition for Pastor James Nash and his wife Stella. The couple and first family of Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church handed out hundreds of food baskets Thursday morning. Mrs. Nash says because of the economy and holidays it was a must to provide for those who don't have. Nash says most of those attending the food giveaway are senior citizens who might not otherwise have a hot meal. Hundreds of people walked away with boxes and crates full of food. Also attending the event was the wife of Mayoral candidate Gene Locke. Aubrey stood at the end of the line shaking hands and urging those attending the event to support her husband in the big December race. The founder of Chi USA wants to be the next governor of Texas.

Palestinian-born Farouk Shami, who made a fortune producing hair products for women, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination Thursday afternoon.

Speaking at his company's north Houston manufacturing plant, Shami said he has lived the American dream.

"I am running for governor of Texas to restore the American dream for all Texans by becoming the jobs governor," Shami said.

Shami said he has already created thousands of jobs at his Houston facility.

He will face at least three other announced candidates in the March primary.

The winner of the democratic primary will face either incumbent republican Governor Rick Perry or Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in next November's general election.

HPD spokesperson John Cannon confirms Goodrick is under investigation and is off the job with pay. The Insite hears the probe stems from Goodrick's conduct. Here are the details from the harris County Sheriff's Office: On November 16, 2009 the Harris County Sheriff's Office was notified by a Confidential Informant (CI) who advised he had been approached by Catherine Shamp, a 38 year old white female who stated she wanted her husband murdered. The CI relayed this information to patrol deputies who contacted the Sheriff's Homicide Unit.

On November 17, 2009 at approximately 9:30 p.m., the CI met with Catherine Shamp at the request of Homicide Investigators and was provided with recording equipment. The CI recorded Catherine Shamp stating she wanted her husband murdered and would be willing to pay the "Hit Man" approximately $20,000.00 dollars.

On November 18, 2009 Catherine Shamp was arrested for Solicitation of Capital Murder and placed in the Harris County Jail.

BLANKENSHIP: ANNISE IS SOFT ON CRIME!

Press Release: The Houston Police Officers' Union (HPOU) today criticized mayoral candidate Annise Parker and reiterated their support of Gene Locke, saying that Locke is the one who will be tough on crime and has a real plan to make Houston's neighborhoods safer.

Gary Blankinship, president of the 5,000-plus member Houston Police Officers' Union stated, "Our organization screened all the candidates and found Gene Locke to be, without equivocation, the only candidate to make the commitment to increase officers on the streets of our city and in the investigative divisions so that HPD officers can do a better job of protecting the people of Houston.

"By comparison, Annise Parker supports status quo. Her ill-advised positions on public safety embrace the kind of soft-on-crime approach that poses a threat to our families and neighborhoods," continued Blankinship. "Now is not the time to turn back the clock to the 1980s, when police academies were halted and crime began to skyrocket, and our officers battled not just criminals, but a staffing shortage and lack of support from City Hall."

Although HPOU has endorsed Parker in her previous campaigns, she has on several occasions been on the opposite side of Houston Police.

As a member of the City Council, Parker voted against adding a permanent anti-gang task force in every HPD substation[i].

In addition, Parker has publicly stated that if elected mayor she will "take apart the police department"[ii] and that Houston police officers are merely "report-takers and ticket-writers....not crime-solvers."[iii] The irony of her position is that if we follow her plan and do nothing, there won't be enough officers to take the reports much less conduct follow-up investigations.

Finally, during the endorsement screening process for the mayor's race earlier this year, Parker made it clear that if elected mayor she would not work with HPD to put a halt to the current staffing shortage, thereby creating a dangerous public safety climate in Houston. Ms. Parker erroneously believes HPD has adequate staffing and ignores the fact that by best accounts of the administration of HPD we are 1,400 officers understaffed.

HPD is a proud organization with men and women who are dedicated to laying down their lives for their community. Our department would take great exception to being taken apart rather than doing what Houstonians want, which is to make our department effectively expand so that we can do the job that the citizens of our city expect and need.

"Sitting idle and not expanding the department to meet our citizens' needs to be safe is a recipe for disaster. It is the equivalent of doing nothing," said Blankinship.

Locke has repeatedly affirmed his support for increasing Houston's police ranks through hiring of new cadets and adding experienced officers through lateral entry, which allows officers from other departments to bring their years of expertise to support public safety in Houston while reducing the city's training burden. He has also advocated putting more police officers on the streets, equipping officers with advanced technology and placing more civilians in roles that do not require police officers' extensive training and skills.

LOCKE GOES AFTER ANNISE PARKER ON THE HIGH TAX ISSUE!

WHO ARE YOU SUPPORTING IN THE BIG RACE?

Yesterday Annise Parker attacked Gene Locke for his commitment to 'make decisions solely on what’s best for Houstonians,' saying "that’s not good enough."

But Parker’s baseless attack is merely an attempt to deflect attention away from her record of bad decisions, particularly on property tax relief.

According to her voting record on Houston City Council, Parker apparently believes higher taxes are ‘what’s best for Houstonians.’ She voted to increase our property taxes in 2001 and opposed reducing property taxes in 2003 and 2004. She’s also voted twice against measures that would have capped the amount property taxes could increase in a year.

“Ms. Parker would rather spend more time talking about some imagined conflicts of interest, than discussing her very real record of raising taxes,” said Locke. “It is essential that the mayor appreciates the impact of high taxes on our city’s well-being.”

Locke is the only mayoral candidate who has never voted for a tax increase. He understands the extreme burden carried by homeowners with escalating property taxes, and has pledged not to raise property taxes when he is mayor. Locke is the most qualified and experienced candidate to lead Houston’s future. His broad experience with the City of Houston, METRO, the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and the Port Authority of Houston has uniquely prepared him to be Houston’s next mayor.

It is time to ask some very important questions of Parker. If what’s best for Houstonians isn’t good enough, then what is? Is it more tax increases? Parker’s record certainly suggests that her answer would be yes.

Annise Parker needs to explain why higher taxes are best for Houstonians.

The Annise Parker for Mayor campaign released the results of a new poll that shows Parker leading her opponent Gene Locke by a margin of 47 percent to 34 percent.

The poll was conducted November 11-15.

“We’ve got a long way to go to Election Day,“ said Parker’s campaign manager Adam Harris. “But the message of this survey is that more and more voters are learning that Annise Parker is the one candidate in this race they can trust to keep our government focused on the basics, so we can hang on to more of our hard-earned tax dollars.“
