You guys are no good at this new-fangled interactivity stuff, are ya? So, although this site is still a place for you to let folks know what's up in the music scene of Hattiesburg, I think I'll use this space to talk about whatever comes into my pretty little disturbed head about the 'Burg. I'll try to stay away from cat stories.

Rumor has it that Girls are gonna be Goin' Wild down there at the old Sports Rock tonight. And no, I'm not headed down there. When I want to see girls kissin' and stuff, I'll get myself some real porn, thank you. A better bet is probably the film, Brick, that is playing at the film-dealie at the Saenger tonight. Interesting concept--film noir set in a high school. Ah, it takes me back.

The Hub City Blues Hour

Walnut Circle Grill is proud to partner with WUSM radio (88.5 FM) to support the first hour of the Hub City Blues program, which airs from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The station format includes a wide variety of music, including classical, jazz, blues and adult alternative, as well as alternative news and programming. They also promote live performances by local bands on Saturdays periodically at T-Bone Records on Hardy Street. If you'd like to help support WUSM, please contact them.

Is now open in the old American Pie Cafe location (106th S. 37th Ave., right behind Pizza Hut on Hardy St.) and is looking for live acts. Fat Harry's is looking for predominately cover bands. They will book original acts, but you must have a demo. They do mostly rock & blues, unfortunately (they say) they cannot book metal or punk.

This just in my mailbox from local favorites and general all-around good guys Buffalo Nickel:

We just got the official news from the Wilco office Thursday that we've been added as support for Wilco at the Temple Theatre in Meridian on March 15th. GET YOUR TICKETS NOW! They are likely to sell out soon if they haven't already. (You have to call the Temple Theatre to order tickets 601-693-5353.)

After corresponding with our old friend Pat Sansone, who joined Wilco last year, about looking forward to his "homecoming" show in Meridian, we were suprised when he told us that the support position for the show had recently come open and that we could have the slot if we wanted it. Well, of course we had to think about it for a while and check and double check our schedules but eventually we said "F*** YEAH!!!" We can't thank Pat enough for such a cool opportunity.

So come out and see Pat, a Mississippi boy from the Hattiesburg music scene whose done REAL GOOD, and come support us on this very special occasion. We hope to see all of our Buffalo Nickel friends there. It's going to be an awesome night.

is a free space for Gulf Coast artists in the tri-state area affected by Hurricane Katrina to post information about their work, to let customers know where they are now and to sell their work online. Though much attention is focused on rebuilding efforts after the hurricane, many don't realize the full extent to which local artists depended on a thriving local economy to survive. Art vendors often sold work to tourists who flocked to the areas for wonderful food, beach getaways, quaint shopping areas and gambling.

Many artists do not have the time (or the money) to wait for the area to rebuild. They need our support now. This site is not asking for donations - we are simply asking you to support Gulf Coast artists by buying their work...and working to make that easier for you to do.

That about sums up my feelings on Eaglepalooza. I'm too old.

I hear from the guys at St. Elmo's that they are no longer soliciting bands for Tuesday night shows.

. . . . I was a bunch more excited about the Olive Garden coming to town back when we had only five restaurants in Hattiesburg, and those were all steak places.

Guthrie's is not necessarily the "Best thing to ever happen to chicken ^(sm)."

Afroman's new album is out. Here's a scathing review of Afroholic the Even Better Times. I haven't heard it yet, but I'm here to tell you that I love Afrodude's raunchy and mysogynistic single Mississippi (Because I Got High) . . . . I get nervous. . . .

Hopefully, fun chaos. There was an article in yesterday's American that states there are still some issues around the event, so we'll have to see how it goes. I get off work at 6 and my building is right in the middle of he mess, so here's hoping I can get home.

Here's the latest on what I've heard about the line-up:
The stage will be on Main Street at Batson near The Oaks Cafe. Vendors will offer food and beverage items, such as hot chili and beer in "limited areas." (Courtesy Mugshots.) Kicks off at 6 pm with a DJ spinning songs, followed by 'Hey Revolution' (???) at 6:30, a DJ at 7 pm, Pat Green at 7:30, a DJ at 9 pm, the SOUTHERN MISS PEP RALLY at 9:30, a DJ at 10 and the show's headliner, DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, performing from 10:30 to midnight.

Eaglepalooza SNAFUs

Why can't we ever have anything nice? Here's a story about the travails of Eaglepalooza, which is set for the 18th.

I do think the light opera meets heavy rock in a downtown rumble will be pretty fun. (Ok, the rock will not be so "heavy," but the word works for my journalistic purposes.) Puts me in mind of the Coast Con (Science Fiction convention on the Coast)/gun show debacle of several years ago. Geeks with light sabers meet rednecks with Uzis! Good times, people.

C & M Music Auction

C&M Music Center in Hattiesburg has been closed since Hurricane Katrina due to major damage to the roof........ AND -

As a result of Hurricane Katrina, C&M Music (Hattiesburg Location only) has hired an auction company to liquidate the remaining inventory from the store. The entire inventory will be sold on Saturday November 19th, 2005. It is available for viewing on Friday November 18th from 9am - 3pm and absentee bids are accepted online as well. All inventory has been graded and tested as to condition.

After rescuing many items, there is still over $500,000 (at retail) left of inventory at the location to be auctioned. Many great deals waiting for someone to scoop up on...

The Annual Authentic Existence Multimedia Minimalist Technology Conference

is an institution in Hattiesburg. Under the auspices of old-school Hattiesburg musician Scott Panther, The Conference is a two-day showcase of the innovative, experimental, loud and crazy.

This is the 11th year of The Conference. Each year, Panther says that it's the last, but Hattiesburg just won't let him retire. The Conference is November 15th and 16th this year, and I strongly recommend that you try to catch at least one of the nights.

Gulf Coast "Band Aid"

There's an instrument drive on for Coast school bands. If you would like to donate instruments or money, please contact Jacqueline Pierce, who has this to say:

The need for monies and instruments for the schools and students along the Gulf Coast is enormous. There is a need not only for today's band students, but for future band students as well. When the families of these future band students don't have suitable housing and have lost so much, they simply won't have the money for flutes and clarinets. This will have an affect not only on high schools on the Gulf Coast, but a long term affect on colleges and university's in the State of Mississippi.

I do small videos at my job for in-services & other things. None of the videos are used to make any money whatsoever. I need some music....for the intros, for the backgrounds, etc. Any good bands who may be interested in letting me use a song or 2 of theirs, I will credit them on the video (which about 1200 employees see)...so that may bring a few folks to shows, who knows, or it could lead to films that make money at some point in time and the artist would be paid for their song.
