In the last weeks I had the infamous idea of commenting a post in the blog of the italian politician Antonio di Pietro (no, I will not link it). To that one and only one comment has followed an automated private e-mail and, today, the first number of the just started newsletter to which I've been added without any previous request.

It was a nice HTML email (netiquette anyone ??):

Alcuni domini ed il servizio di posta pare che stiano tornando su. Di certo kOoLiNuS.net, l'altro mio dominio e Pseudotecnico sono - mentre vi scrivo - visitabili e navigabili ....

Per i siti hostati su piattaforma windows server pare ci sia ancora da aspettare.

Ovviamente NON ci sono state comunicazioni ufficiali, non si sa se ormai "e' andata" o se si tratta solo di un test, e in ogni caso www.excom.it e' ancora irraggiungibile.

excom, il punto della situazione

Per amore di archiviazione riporto il post appena fatto sul blog di Xarface approfittando dell’ ospitalita’ che mi ha dato ed aggiornarvi a SEI giorni SEI dal down dell’ intera rete facente capo alla Extreme Communications (che ricordo essere iniziato verso le 16.00 del giorno 15 febbraio).

Ancora non si sa cosa e’ successo (ufficialmente) e ancora non si e’ capito perche’ ma il forum di Prozone.it in questi giorni - assieme ad un newsgroup su googlegroups - e’ diventato IL riferimento per tutta la vicenda. Tant’e che la stessa ExCom si e’ presa la briga di registrare un utente da loro, seguendo le policy di autenticazione per essere indicati come service provider all’inteno della comunita’.

Gli UNICI comunicati ufficiali dell’ azienda (il minuscolo non e’ casuale) sono stati dunque presentati in questo thread:

Scendendo nella scala dell’ ufficialita’ dei comunicati vi segnalo il blog temporaneo aperto dai fondatori dell’ ILDN (Italian Linux Distro Network = Fedora Italia, SUSE Italia, Mandriva Italia & Co, nonche’ incubatori della distribuzione FoX Linux, ricordate ?) per comunicare alla loro comunita’ cosa stesse accadendo. Infatti erano in corso le operazioni burocratiche per sancirne la loro nascita come Associazione a tutti gli effetti di legge ed era stato comprato un nuovo server per sostenere il notevole carico dei forum. Server che era stato portato (guarda il caso) nel data center di ExCom. Quando si dice la sfiga!

Qui e’ stato suscitato il vespaio di polemiche che ha spinto ExCom a farsi viva e sono apparse le piu’ variegate illazioni e notizie sul loro conto (ipotizzata morosita’ verso Retelit, ricovero ospedaliero del titolare dell’ azienda e cosi’ via).

Il succo e’ che ieri sera, verso le 19.33 e’ stato diramato un comunicato che assicurava i clienti che il trasloco in un nuovo datacenter a Roma (dal vecchio che era a Viterbo) e’ stato concluso e si e’ in attesa che il girone dei DNS si concluda per vedere tutto finalmente on line!

Leggo sul blog dell' amico Giovy della nuova offerta commerciale di Vodafone Italia, tale vodafone revolution, secondo la quale:

"Con Vodafone Revolution parli gratis con tutti, per sempre, ad un euro al giorno".

Figo no ?
Peccato che, come Giovanni ci spiega nel post, un utonto medio con questa tariffa spenderebbe 110.40€ al mese.

Concludo con un appello, cercasi tariffa Vodafone / TIM {3 la devo prendere in considerazione ??} vantaggiosa, chiamo tutti, genericamente sono conciso e preferirei una simil flat per parlare con la morosa .... esistera' una tariffa umana per me ?

come molti anche io ho preso un servizio di hosting dai signori di Extreme Communications, Viterbo - Italia.

Tutto va bene sino a qualche settimana fa quando cominciano dei rallentameti, informalmente viene comunicato a dei clienti nel forum "ufficiale" che stanno modificando la loro connettivita' per offrire un servizio migliore.

Poi ieri, 15 febbraio 2006, alle ore 16.00 casca il mondo e tutto cio' che e' a loro direttamente o indirettamente correlato semplicemente scompare dal web.

Oggi, 16 febbraio, a VENTISEI ore dall' incidente su un forum indipendente [1] compare il messaggio che riporto qui sotto a loro nome (saranno davvero loro ?)

a seguito di un problema di carattere tecnico imprevisto sono in corso degli importanti interventi di manutenzione che comporteranno il riadeguamento di tutta l'infrastruttura. Seems that someone finds useful to catalogue in a clear and accessible way ALL of it's knowledge on a topic on a wiki.

The univertity of Latvia, has started a wiki section in it's own wiki called Unofficial Mandriva Linux 2006 Starter Guide.

I've taken a quick look at the guide and seem very clearly laid out, and easy to follow in subsequential steps ....

Now, if only I knew where actually is this Univertity of Latvia !

Looking at the huge feedback to this post from my friend fullo [102 commentis and counting ], I've decided to go public and advertize my membership to the Orkut network too. :-P

Being a member I've known indirectly some people, with some other I've estabilished an internet-friendship, others I've encountered in my real life.

Unfortunately at the moment my Orkut membership seems to be useful only into knowing the brazilian and/or portoguese (?) languages

PS = in the mean time I'm still having some major problems with my SUSE machine, yesterday night @23.30 I had 3,33GB of updates to get - via the force update if available option via YaST - and this morning I still had to get 2,80GB of rpms ..... the line is an ADSL 4Mbs in download ..... don't know what to do ... erase it and start all over ?

I've recently discovered that my friends @ SPRITe, during the last Italian Linux Day on the end of November have managed to get free, give away DVDs of SUSE Linux 10.0 by Novell.

I've put on my Flickr page some cheap shots made with my iPaq 6345 built-in camera ... just search for koolinus there :-)

As I've said in my previous post I am actually trying the Mandriva 2006 on my laptop .... the installation process has undergone some problems, but in any case I was up and running with just a little tweaking ....

I've found out a KDE 3.5 + Gnome 2.12 + E-17 + XFCE 4.2 repository for Mandriva (actually Google has) and I've decided to give it a try.

This is a partial result:

the problem

As (all) we know YOU updates only the packages that comes with the main distro, the core packages, as one could say. This means that if I am in the situation of updating a series of packages that comes form external repos I have to manually search and update them via the normal yast package management tools. Non very comfortable, in my (and seemingly non only mine) opinion.

the solution

Fast Online Update 4 SUSE propose itself as a viable solution. As we can read in the project's home page [ http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/index.shtml ]:

Fou4s is a replacement for SuSE's Yast OnlineUpdate (YOU). It uses the same update description files and is therefore a complete, lightweight alternative.

and then follows a nice list of it's many capabilities. fou4s is a CLI tool.

installation

First of all let's import the signature key of the packager:

rpm --import http://keyserver.bu.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=
vindex&search =0x0EA1932BAFB66D7C

then we can point our browsers to: http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/download.shtml

wget http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/download/fou4s-X.XX.X-X.noarch.rpm

and now we can install it. Attention please, in the before mentioned line I've put XXX to indicate the current stable version

rpm -Uvh fou4s-0.x.y-z.noarch.rpm

fou4s --server selects a specifical ftp server (usually not necessary, default is: ftp.gwdg.de)

fou4s -u --checkfou4s updates patch descriptions and checks if a new version of fou4s is available

fou4s -e checks only the availability of the updates, it's used for evaluation purpouses only

fou4s -i downloads and installs any available update

On the project's home page there is another bunch of FAQs, that's all folks !

KDE and GNOME

Finally an official comment has come from Novell PS's [1]:

" There has been a lot of debate over the last few days in the media and on message boards about what is happening regarding GNOME vs. KDE at Novell. Here's the situation. All future enterprise-class Linux product releases, including Novell Linux Desktop, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Novell Open Enterprise Server, will continue to ship with both the GNOME and KDE desktop environments. In upcoming versions of Novell enterprise applications, the default desktop environment will be GNOME. When customers install Novell Linux products, they will be given the option to choose either the GNOME or KDE environment during the installation process. If the user makes no explicit choice, GNOME will be installed.

This change has no implication for current Novell customers. Novell will continue to invest in both GNOME and KDE and we will continue to offer maintenance and support for these products and their desktop environments throughout their planned product lifetimes.

This decision has very little impact on either the openSUSE project or future versions of SUSE Linux. SUSE Linux will continue to showcase the newest open source desktop, development, and server technologies in a complete, stabilized operating system. You may make and distribute unlimited copies of the Software outside Your organization provided that: 1) You receive no consideration; and, 2) you do not bundle or combine the Software with another offering (e.g., software, hardware, or service).

As i've commented out on Karan's blog there is actually someone asking clearly for an answer, and in the terms staten over there there is very little OPEN in opensuse developmente capability.

I hope this will go better, because we do not need a closed community .... or, at least, I am not interested in joining one ....

feeling about SuSE / Novell

Recently a lot of noise has come from some articles on a famous e-zine. Strong comments have come from our pals at Planet SuSE and on SuSE/openSUSE mailing list.

Still, like Liquidat's have staten, one can feel a growing and bugging feeling coming on .... the "hi-market" strategy takin on decision on us users, specifically susers ;-)

So, now i'll try to extend something I said commenting Liquidat's post.

You give me too much credit ;-) I'm absolutely not an expert, but i DO read a lot.

Kubuntu never tried it, but I heard it has grown very well. Nothing more on this subject. The only thing i can assure anyone is that they have build up a strong community, a huge amount of how-to's, they're planning to slow down the relase schedule @1 year (like any other distro out there, excluding Fedora), and that apt/synaptic combo is a real good one
Mandriva I'm hearing some good reviews, a friend of mine uses it regularly on any kind of machine he manages, and they are spendingo some money to stay in business ... I tend to to support them, I think that french nationalism will keep it the european distro. From a security point I hear a lot has changed, and they are keeping both DE on development, and still they are prone to have a newer KDE than Gnome (see the fact that gnome 2.12 has been released very recently and only to club members). An italian friend keep a daily journal on his Cooker machines.
kde-redhat ok, I am willing to admit they have a good project goig there. But what i don't like about Fedora is the repository hell ....ok, one can remove Livna and live happily ... but there has to be a stronger control on this external people, let's hope that the RPMforge project will grow soon. Oh, the system-config-* tools are GTK based, like you said on Mandriva, or did I misunderstood that ?
KDE development. Simply I don't follow it so I don't have nothing to say.

So, I'll remaing loyal with openSUSE, right now I was on the point to erase windows on my laptop to make more room on it .... and I hope that in the next six months a real community will grow around that wiki ....

So, today i've done a quick translation of the Liquidat post on how to install && configure Smart PM on SuSE Linux 10.0 ...

jow-to create a dvd iso (and fail)

One month ago i've donwloafde the 5 cd iso files of Open SuSE 10.0 Release Candidate.

Given that i actually have a dvd burner and that i don't like play the dj game when i install or update a package, i made a search finding infos on how to make a dvd-iso. On the official wiki page we have ready a dedicated How-To page.

There we find decribed two methods. The first uses a specially made script, the second tells us about a procedure suggested in the SuSE mailing list.

Well, if you right now have a different distro or OS installed these two methods won't work basically because the reate-package-descr depencie:

This is a perl script and is written specificaly for SuSE

This said the conceptual method of doing a simple cat iso1 iso2 iso3 > isofinal is not right because we'll lost the index file of the available packages and the fact that we have collected them on a single support …

Any idea on how to solve this ?
