Finkelstein landed at Ben Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv in the early morning and was told by a representative of the ministry of interior that he would not be allowed into the country on 'security' grounds, attorney Michael Sfard told dpa. This usually means a 10-year ban on entry,' Sfard added.

Finkelstein, who is Jewish and the son of Holocaust survivors, has written critical books [The Holocaust Industry] on Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories and on what he called 'exploitation' of the Jewish tragedy during World War II. Finkelstein has received with the fierce disapproval of some authors and academics, while others have praised his controversial works.

█ It is widely accepted that under international law, the Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel are illegal.

Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilian persons in time of war states:

►"The occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own population into the territories it occupies."

Within the international community the overwhelming view is that Article 49 is applicable to the occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The United States has in the past called the settlements illegal, but has more recently used milder language, at least in public.

However, the Mitchell report into the causes of Palestinian-Israeli violence that began in September 2000 said:

►...customary international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, prohibits Israel (as an occupying power) from establishing settlements in occupied territory pending an end to the conflict."

Israel argues that the international conventions relating to occupied land do not apply to the Palestinian territories because they were not under the legitimate sovereignty of any state in the first place. ◘

The Balfour Declaration of 1917 was the first significant declaration by a world power in favour of a Jewish "national home" in what was known as Palestine. Historians disagree as to what the then British Foreign Secretary, Arthur James Balfour, intended by his declaration. The letter has no mention of the word "state", and insists that nothing should be done "which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine".

▓ Although it is not often reported by the press, a large proportion of American diplomatic and military experts have long held that U.S. support of Israel is often contrary to and, in fact, extremely damaging to U.S. interests.

Support for Israel interferes with: American relations with the oil-producing nations, with whom we previously had friendly ties; with Muslim consumers, who represent 1.2 billion people world-wide; and removes much-needed money from domestic American requirements — tax revenues that could be addressed to domestic needs are instead sent abroad to prop up a system of discrimination that is antithetical to American principles of equality and democracy.

In addition, the ‘special relationship’ between the U.S. and Israel is increasingly imperiling American lives.

Why, then, is this done? Close examination of the history and current situation reveals that U.S. policies in the Middle East are rarely driven by U.S. interests. Rather, they are largely driven by two very different factors:

Special-interest lobbying of the sort that is common to Washington. The only difference from typical lobby groups is that this lobbying is on behalf of a foreign government. Fortune Magazine rates one of the many lobby organizations working on behalf of Israel, AIPAC, as the second most powerful lobby in Washington. In total, many experts rate the pro-Israel interest group as the most powerful lobby in Washington.
The efforts of a growing number of individuals with close ties to Israel (known as neoconservatives) who have attained key positions at high levels of the U.S. administration, State Department, and Pentagon.

Interestingly, the oil and weapons industries, although very influential over parts of American Middle East policy, are not responsible for our relationship with Israel. In fact, quite often both of these industries find our support for Israel undermines their corporate interests in the region.

Veterans' perspective on the war
All veterans who volunteered for combat roles in the Second World War deserve the admiration that your correspondent Gary McGregor has expressed towards his "Uncle Jack" who risked his life in Aircrew in the War to Save Civilization. Not all Veterans however, upon reflection, would agree that the War on our German kinfolk was unequivocally a Noble Cause or that the Allied record in conducting the War was without blemish.
The CBC's controversial film "The Valour and the Horror", reflected in the War Museum's sign questioning the deliberate slaughter of German civilians, prompted an outcry by former RCAF members, almost all of whom disparaged the documentary as insulting and untrue, at least in its implication that the Aircrews wittingly committed mass murder. Among the Veterans' submissions was one from Wing Commander C. G. "Giff" Gifford, of St. John, N.B., whose RCAF Squadron took part in the bombing of Dresden in 1945, when the war in effect was already won. He wrote that the Briefing Officer for the raid announced: "We have a real juicy one for you tonight, gentlemen, it's Dresden - and it's packed with refugees". Indeed it was, and many tens of thousands of mothers with children, fleeing for their lives from the rapacious Red Army, were incinerated in the intensive fire-bombing, along with an irreplaceable treasure-trove of Europe's finest baroque architecture.
Gifford confided to a friend, not long before he died, that the remorse of having been a party to the mass murder of innocent Christian civilians had haunted him every day of his life.
As for the relative wisdom of Vets and historians, there can be no question that the Vets had the better grasp of military actions in which they were directly involved, but, for better or for worse, they were kept in the dark regarding the political maneuvering that was responsible for their plight and had no opportunity to analyze in depth the worthiness of their cause nor the validity of command decisions that would seal their fate. Many, facing death on the ground or in the air, would have had second thoughts had they known that treacherous politicians had ensured that Stalin, a far greater threat to Christian civilization than Hitler, would be the main beneficiary of their sacrifice. Nor could they have known that acquisitive warmongers in high places, beholden to secret paymasters, would perpetuate conflict and oppression -ultimately forfeiting the precious freedoms and security the young idealists had fought so courageously to preserve.

▓ Several years ago, state attorneys general and others involved in consumer protection began to notice a marked increase in a range of predatory lending practices by mortgage lenders. Some were misrepresenting the terms of loans, making loans without regard to consumers' ability to repay, making loans with deceptive "teaser" rates that later ballooned astronomically, packing loans with undisclosed charges and fees, or even paying illegal kickbacks. These and other practices, we noticed, were having a devastating effect on home buyers. In addition, the widespread nature of these practices, if left unchecked, threatened our financial markets.

Even though predatory lending was becoming a national problem, the Bush administration looked the other way and did nothing to protect American homeowners. In fact, the government chose instead to align itself with the banks that were victimizing consumers.

Predatory lending was widely understood to present a looming national crisis. This threat was so clear that as New York attorney general, I joined with colleagues in the other 49 states in attempting to fill the void left by the federal government. Individually, and together, state attorneys general of both parties brought litigation or entered into settlements with many subprime lenders that were engaged in predatory lending practices. Several state legislatures, including New York's, enacted laws aimed at curbing such practices.

What did the Bush administration do in response? Did it reverse course and decide to take action to halt this burgeoning scourge? As Americans are now painfully aware, with hundreds of thousands of homeowners facing foreclosure and our markets reeling, the answer is a resounding no.

Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.

Let me explain: The administration accomplished this feat through an obscure federal agency called the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC has been in existence since the Civil War. Its mission is to ensure the fiscal soundness of national banks. For 140 years, the OCC examined the books of national banks to make sure they were balanced, an important but uncontroversial function. But a few years ago, for the first time in its history, the OCC was used as a tool against consumers.

In 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative. The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks. The federal government's actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.

But the unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact, when my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in mortgage lending by a number of banks, the OCC filed a federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.

Throughout our battles with the OCC and the banks, the mantra of the banks and their defenders was that efforts to curb predatory lending would deny access to credit to the very consumers the states were trying to protect. But the curbs we sought on predatory and unfair lending would have in no way jeopardized access to the legitimate credit market for appropriately priced loans. Instead, they would have stopped the scourge of predatory lending practices that have resulted in countless thousands of consumers losing their homes and put our economy in a precarious position.

When history tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners, the Bush administration will not be judged favourably. The tale is still unfolding, but when the dust settles, it will be judged as a willing accomplice to the lenders who went to any lengths in their quest for profits. So willing, in fact, that it used the power of the federal government in an unprecedented assault on state legislatures, as well as on state attorneys general and anyone else on the side of consumers.◘◘◘ ►The writer is governor of New York.

He also has appellations for President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney: "domestic enemies of the Constitution" and "war criminals." Speaking at a church in San Francisco Saturday, Daniel Ellsberg bemoaned the Administration's war and Iraq and cautioned about the dangers of a future war in Iran, according to a report in the local Golden Gate Express.

Ellsberg leaked a sheaf of documents that would become known as the "Pentagon Papers" in 1971, a secret history of the war in Vietnam in which the Pentagon conceded the war was unlikely to be won. At the time, Ellsberg worked as a Pentagon consultant. Ellsberg used his talk this weekend to focus on how he feels the Administration has drifted from the constitution, the Express said. He attacked Congress, too, saying its 2002 authorization of force for the war was unconstitutional.

“We have gone far from the Constitution,” he said. Staying true to constitutional values are “not synonymous with obeying the president.”

Later, he assailed those who've ruled out impeaching Bush and Cheney. Many of us use passwords that are easy to guess Security firm McAfee is warning that even the websites you trust can pose a risk to your online safety. It has discovered that 10,000 legitimate web pages have been rigged by cyber-criminals to take control of a visitor's PC and search for stored passwords. The password-stealing program attack was launched from servers based in China and McAfee warned surfers to be very careful about which sites they visit.

"Often you hear warnings about not going to un-trusted sites. That is good advice, but it is not enough," said Craig Schmugar, threat researcher at McAfee Avert Labs.
"Even sites you know can become compromised. You went to a place before that you trust, but that trust was violated through a vulnerability that was exploited," he continued. Safari, An Argentinian security researcher has discovered two flaws in Apple's Safari for Windows browser. Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian said the vulnerabilities could allow hackers to remotely take control of a victim's computer.He described the most serious flaw as a vulnerability in the Safari browser for Windows 3.1 which allows a hacker to “falsify the web address and enter another page or content".This essentially means that even though you see a trusted URL in the browser address bar, the web page could be displaying unauthorized content that could put your PC at risk.

Security firm Secunia has given the flaws a 'highly critical' rating, the second highest rating on its scale. The other flaw, said Secunia, is an error that occurs when downloading files with an overly long filename, which can be exploited to cause a memory corruption which could in turn allow a hacker to take control of the PC. The problems are currently unpatched and Apple would not comment on the matter when approached by Web User.The discovery follows criticism from Mozilla, developers of the Firefox browser, over the inclusion of the Safari browser in a software update issued by Apple to people who use iTunes on Windows-based PCs.

John Lilly, chief executive of Mozilla, said that it was "wrong" to push the browser on people who were simply trying to update iTunes.
"It undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their customers, and that's bad - not just for Apple, but for the security of the whole web," he wrote on his blog. Safari version 3.1 was released by Apple last week.◘

According to a recent story in the Los Angeles Times, only 13 Israelis have been killed by these rockets in the past seven years. Peter Wolz, who describes himself as an attorney for Jewish survivors of Auschwitz and their heirs, is appealing for Hungarian victims of the death camps and their heirs to contact him over a possible class action. -- Düsseldorf-based Wolz says he has already filed a class action for $40 billion against the US government at the Federal District court of Colombia, in Washington DC. The class action concerns the failure of the Allies to bomb the railway bridges between Hungary and Auschwitz during the Second World War. Wolz believes the bombing of the railway bridges could have saved more than 400,000 Hungarian Jews life during 1944. He put the number of Budapest Jews who escaped the Holocaust – people like financier George Soros and the late Congressman Tom Lantos – at about 120,000 only.
“The responsible Federal judge drew a summons, which was delivered to President George W Bush,” Wolz told The Budapest Sun via email.
“In his reply the President declared, ‘The US accepts the well-pled allegations of the complaint as true,’” the attorney claimed.
Wolz’s call for Hungarian survivors and heirs to register with his IPAS (international project group Auschwitz Sammelklagen (class action)), organization, for either further punitive class actions at US Federal Courts, or for settlement out of court, follows Bush’s visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Israel this January.

Now, yesterday so you know, Barack Obama said, and I quote, ***it's time to stop spending billions of dollars a week trying to put Iraq back together and start spending the money on putting America back together.*** Got it? He wants to put America back together. That's why he proposed $210 billion yesterday to create jobs, $210 billion to create jobs. That, by the way, is a 2, a 1 followed by 10 zeroes. He wants $150 billion to create 5 million green collar jobs to do things for the environment. $150 billion, green collar jobs.
