Sights Behind the Dump — Animals

This is the last of my posts about the hike we took behind the dump. This post is about the animals that we either saw or found evidence of. These aren't all the animals — I posted the wood frog photos here, the geometer moths here, and of course, the sad porcupine was posted here and here. I have previously posted the caterpillar, pigeon horntail and salamander photos. I'm posting different photos of each here. If you want to see any of these photos full size, just click on the image.

The first photo, above, is of a green frog. It is well camouflaged with the green and black markings. I like photographing these little things.

Leopard Slug Set

Above is a leopard slug. Apparently it is not native but is now very common here. I saw my first leopard slug while it was slugging down an amanita mushroom. The one above was eating the fungi on the bark of a tree. The photograph of the leopard slug below illustrates their defensive reaction when you hold one. They curl up small.

The photograph below is, yes, dung. Moose dung. With fungi growing in it. Next time you eat a wild mushroom, remember what it ate before you ate it!

Below is a pigeon horntail. John saw it on a tree. I would've walked right by it. There are 22 species of this bug in the world. But only one in North America! I'm glad he saw it!

One of my favorite bugs is the catepillar below. It is the caterpillar of the American Dagger Moth (click the link to see what this moth looks like). I have here two macros of this caterpillar that I usually save for my Photo A Day blog. If you like macros, visit me there!

And finally, this is a Northern Two-lined Salamander. In order to find these small creatures, we find a lot of time on our hands and knees in the mud. It is well worth the effort and the laundry!

Sights Behind the Dump — Flora

I have already posted many photos of the plants, mushrooms and fungi from this hike (here, here, here, and here). But the photos in this post have stories to tell.

Above is young hobblebush (Viburnum lantanoides) that is frequently covering the forest floor. John and I have been wondering for months what this is. We see it everywhere. While researching another plant that we had found, John fell upon the identification of this foliage. It has died back significantly here in October and is usually waist high. The colors of the leaves vary whether the brush is in sun or shade. The blooms in spring are magnificent (go look at them in my hobblebush set). It is as if there are two different flowers on one bush. I am very familiar with the flowers so I am very pleased to now be acquainted with the foliage of hobblebush.

I was thrilled when we came across the fungi above. I had seen pictures of the hericium fungus in books. John had said he had seen it here but I hadn't seen it until this hike. In the pictures, and in real life, the fungus reminds me of ice falls on cliffs in the winter. It is delicate and beautiful. We found a couple of growths of hericium on this hike.

There were, literally, hundreds of this mushroom in the woods on the day we hiked behind the dump. This is American Pine Mushroom (Armillaria ponderosa). I didn't recognize it because it looked, here, so different from when when I saw it before. Mushroom identification is tricky. The same species can look totally different depending on whether it just sprouted, is mature, or is fading away. It can even look different if is a wet week or a dry week or if slugs have eaten it. The first American Pine mushroom I ever saw was green with algae from a solid ten days of rain.

This mushroom above is a wood hedgehog mushroom (Hydnum repandum). Great name! It doesn't have gills underneath. It has "spines," as you can see below:

We prefer to hike on cool, cloudy days. I find clouds better for my photographs and the clouds keep us cool. This hike was like the others and began on a cloudy day. Suddenly, halfway through the hike, the sun broke out. As I looked up to see the sun, I saw this brilliant foliage and took photos of it.

This photo above is of a club moss — Treelike Club Moss (Lycopodium dendroideum). Our forests are thick with various club mosses on the floor. Club mosses are so important that when I lived in Vermont, and when we had a teacher's inservice day, we were taught and quizzed orally on our ability to identify club mosses. It was not the subject of the mathematics inservice, but it was important. We have to preserve our club mosses. Why? I'm not sure yet. Sorry. I have so much to learn! I'll let you know when I look it up!

Now the photograph above is interesting. It is a Japanese maple tree, an invasive species, eaten up by a moose. There were so many signs of moose about us on this hike that I got the creeps. I was always looking for a place to hide if a moose showed up. (Yes, I am irrationally afraid of them because all I know is that they trample people. I have seen many moose but I have always been in my house or in my car, not out in the open forest.) Anyhow, John explained why this invasive tree has not taken over our northern forest. It is a combination of moose predation and climate. The moose actually spread the tree through their dung. But they love the tree so much as food that they eat it before it can grow too much. A few do grow and reproduce, but not enough to take over the forest. And then the winter stunts the growth and kills off unsuccessful saplings. So it seems to be a great combination of circumstance for our mooses.

The tree above is a dead spruce. We can't even tell whether it is red, blue or black spruce. It was very dramatic in person and I don't think I captured the drama of this huge ancient tree standing dead in the forest.

We have no idea what this beautiful plant is above. John sees it often. The leaves are striped just like a trout lily but it's not trout lily. It is very small and grows on rotting leaf litter in the darkest glades of the forest. We actually dug one up and have planted it at home inside tupperware with a huge amount of leaf litter that we brought with it. It is doing very well.

Here, above, we saw a wonderful, stately, ancient yellow birch tree (Betula alleghaniensis). It was near the stone wall pasture. It was so old that we knew it had seen the wall being built and had given the cows shade on hot days and protection during storms. It has been struck by lightning at least once during the past centuries. It has the normal insect and fungal damage. Yet it stands tremendously tall and strong and proud. We were grateful to see that the old farmer long ago never cut this birch down.

Finally we have one of my favorite forest plants: Indian cucumber (Medeola virginiana). I have eaten many of the roots of this plant. It tastes sweet and cool. It is very small, but in a pinch, if you are starving to death in the woods, you can eat this root. You can see the root and foliage of this plant in the Indian cucumber photo set. Click on this photo to view the large image. The coloring of the leaves around the berry is beautiful to look at. By the way, the berries are different colors during different stages of growth. But the plant remains the same: six leaves in a circle below the three leaves on a tall stem.

Sights Behind the Dump — Geography

We see so much on our hikes. There are too many photos to post. But I have chosen a selection of photographs that highlight what I learned on the hike, whether it be about the plants, animals or geography of the area we hiked in. You can click on any photo to see it full size in a new window. If you click on a text link you will be taken to my Flickr set for the photograph. All of my hike photos are in my Photowalks & Hikes Collection. I call this hike the Behind the Dump Hike because we walked to the dump and then left it behind as we entered the Mt. Kearsarge State Forest.

Above is a quartz flecked granite boulder on John's property. You can't see it well here but it is studded with garnets. The boulder is in an old abandoned garnet mine here. These small mines stud the country side in New England. Granite, quartz, mica, garnets, feldspar and other minerals were mined by local people.

The photos above and below are of the unnamed brook in the forest that we followed up the hill and back on this hike. There were beautiful falls such as these and quiet flats where the brook quietly burbled.

Above is a stone wall that we suddenly came across near the crest of the hill. There was an old pasture here a couple of hundred years ago. It amazes me how the old people withstood the hardships of life in the hills and mountains long ago. It must have been extremely difficult to pasture your dairy herd up here. Nowadays, these ancient walls create wonderful habitat for all sorts of plants and animals.

In the photo above, if you are familiar with deer roads, you may just see a deer trail going from the left side of the brook, across it to the right side, and then forward towards the camera on the right. This is a well-used trail the deer use for water and fording.

Above is another deer ford across the brook. Another watering spot for them.

Last we see above, the "idyllic" spot where the sad porcupine lives. The brook falls on the left. To the right of the brook you see a whitish boulder with a small pool in front of it. That boulder (white looking because of the sun) is where the porcupine lives. She has a large den underneath with several entrances all around it. In my Sad Porcupine post you will see the up-close photos of the quills, the pool, and of course, the sad porcupine.

Town Dump

Why photos of the town dump? Well, I'm pleased to have one. In Vermont dumps were closed years ago and you have to pay for trash removal. There are recycling centers in each town for plastic, glass and metal. But everything else has to be hauled out by private contractors. The dump here in New Hampshire (and each town seems to have its own dump) accepts everything. You still have to sort and deposit stuff in the proper dumpster. The town makes money by selling the trash to companies that recycle and process it.

Our dump is on the edge of the Mt. Kearsarge State Forest where we hike just by walking out the back door. The last time we walked through the dump we got a good bundt cake pan that we use frequently. The dump attendant pulls useful items out of the trash and displays them in a special area for people to look through. You can find good, free stuff at dumps.

Pansy's Big Weekend

I don't write too often about Pansy because she doesn't like me. But she is changing here in New Hampshire. Without dogs and with the ability to go outside, this disabled cat is learning trust and how to enjoy life. She is interacting with John and me more every day. She even talks to us now!

Last weekend was unseasonably warm and Pansy enjoyed sunning nearly the entire day on the deck. The next day, Monday, I was looking out of a window in the back of the house and I saw her hobbling back to the house . . . with a mouth full of mouse!

This was the best photograph that I got of her with her kill. When I got too close, Pansy abandoned the mouse and returned to the back field. But what a big day for her! Pansy is over 10 years old and this was her first kill! And she was bringing it home! John and I were both so proud of her. And so happy for her.

By the way, the mice in Vermont that the cats brought home were less than half this big. In Vermont, this would be the size of a rat. If Vermont had rats. Which it doesn't. This thing was huge! Warmer weather does create larger critters.

The big boss cat asked Jebus about his wurdies to th peeples. Jebus sed 'Teh cats have ears (Well maybe not 1 of dem). why not you ask them wot i saids tto dem?' then teh army d00d hits Jebus and sed 'how very dare you talk to Boss Cat liek dat.' But Jebus sed hey i no do anyfink wrong so dont hit me kthxbai'. So tehn big boss cat sent him to even bigger boss cat.

So when teh d00d was standin around some crazy gui asked him if he was jebuses d00d. but he still sed NO WAI. Den one of teh fwends of teh earless army gui sed 'hey didnt you cut mi frends earsies off?' but teh d00d still sed NO WAI. then a crazy chicken who no has flavor started to sing.

So anywai teh army d00ds takes Jebus to teh big boss cat. and teh big boss cat sez 'who dis and why he here?' so teh army d00ds said 'He bad so we bring him to ur office to be fired kthxbai.' So teh boss cat sez 'DO NOT WANT taek him awai nao and do what u watn wif him.' but teh army d00ds sed 'NO WAI we cants die him in his sleeps'. The Sad Porcupine

If you ever go into the woods with John, and if he suddenly jumps back and says "Uh oh," then you should duck for cover. He is the most knowledgeable naturalist I have ever met. If he is surprised in the woods, it is a bad surprise.

We were hiking in the Mt Kearsarge forest behind the town dump and up the hill. I was photographing yellow club fungus. John was walking the area, talking to me, saying how he had never seen so many porcupine quills in one area. He was exploring outside of a porcupine den. He identified the entrances of it and was observing the tracks and surrounding vegetation — seeing what the porcupine was eating nearby. He again looked at the glacial erratic boulder that was 15 feet tall under which the porcupine had her den. And that is when he cursed and jumped backward. The porcupine had been right there all the time, watching him nervously, camouflaged by her coat which was the color of the quartz flecked granite boulder.

Once we caught our breath, John observed that porcupines were usually placid and calm. This one was very tense and nervous. She was not behaving normally. John feared other predators — perhaps something was still in the area.

The quills littering the forest floor were both baby and adult quills. The mother porcupine was alone. There was evidence of struggle in the vegetation.

After studying the tracks, trails and clues, John told me that a fisher cat, the only natural predator of porcupines, had raided the den and carried off and killed the porcupine pup. The mother had defended her baby valiantly but she couldn't withstand a fisher cat attack.

She was now alone and nervous. John climbed all the way to the top of the boulder to find another view of the mom. This spooked her out of the den, which is when I got two shots of her.

We left her in relative peace and followed the fisher cat trail. We soon lost the trail. The fisher could have gone up a tree to eat its prey.

The Transmission Lines

The gash under the transmission lines is a dominant feature in some areas here where I live. But I don't find it ugly. I don't even think that clearing the right of way for the lines destroys habitat. The area around the lines is a fascinating look at how plants and animals succeed each other. When the area is cut, geographic features stand out clearly. The lines are so prominent that I have traced this gash on Google maps. Click on my map and then zoom in to see the detail.

The ISO-NE site is full of information about all facets of energy in New England. I have a lot of reading and learning to do.

The Barred Rocks

Amelia has a flock of 11 Barred Rock hens in Barton, Vermont. We were in Barton this past weekend to put a roof on the house. I compiled a bunch of videos that I took and made three movies of the funny chickens. In the first video, we are invited into the barn (hen house) by two of the hens. Inside, a hen is attended by another as she sits on two eggs. Two other hens take us on a tour of the barn.

In this second video, above, several hens are taking baths in the wet earth near the barn. There were originally twelve chickens, but one was eaten by a fox, bear, coyote or fisher. These eleven hens are now only allowed outside in the daytime and are closely watched.

Barred Rocks are a species of Plymouth Rock chickens. The breed was developed in New England in the mid 1800s. There are several colors of Plymouth Rocks. The Barred Rocks are good layers and are easily tamed and very curious. Their eggs are brown and one hen can lay 200 eggs in her lifetime. This last video is my favorite — especially from 4:10 to the end. The wind was blowing fiercely but that didn't bother the hens. I was practicing calling them. They had gradually become adjusted to having me hang out with them, so they responded quickly when I called. The quality of this video is the best, too. I'm still learning videography!

Geometridae

This is the third geometer moth species I have photographed. They are difficult to identify because there are over 1,400 species in North America alone and over 35,000 species worldwide. You can tell a geometer moth with the geometric stripes across the wings. This moth was flitting about the woods when we hiked behind the dump in town. It was well camouflaged and was moving so much that it was hard to photograph. For more information on geometer moths, see bugguide.net.

Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle

It's ladybug infestation time again. But it isn't as bad here as in northern Vermont. This one was spotless. According to bugguide.net:

First introduced to North America (for biological control of aphids) in California in 1916, and again in California in 1964 and 1965. Also introduced in Washington state from 1978–1982, and in Nova Scotia, Connecticut, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware, Maine, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina from 1978–1981 [Gordon, 1985]. Despite the numerous intentional releases, the species did not become established until 1988 in Louisiana [Chapin and Broux, 1991]. Thereafter, it spread rapidly thoughout most of United States, reaching Canada in 1994.

Although not native to this country, this species is widely sold for aphid control throughout the US, and has become very well-established (to the point of becoming a nuisance). The stage that eats the most aphids is the larva.

Adult beetles seek sheltered places to hibernate for the winter, and often invade homes in large numbers for that purpose. The best way to prevent this is to find and seal the cracks by which they gain entry.

When threatened, ladybird beetles in general, and this one in particular, exude a foul-smelling and -tasting liquid from their leg joints.

My Vermont vanity plates are gone.
I'm officially a New Hampshire resident now.

It took me six months to get a driver's license here. New Hampshire would not accept my green photo-free Vermont license because the little numbers and letters had rubbed off of it. This is the same license that had me held in Canadian immigration for an hour years ago. The same license that caused the Canadian immigration folks to tell me to go back to Vermont and tell them to "get with it" and issue photo IDs.

The problem with getting a New Hampshire license was that Vermont DMV will not fax information to New Hampshire DMV and New Hampshire DMV will not fax to Vermont. Each state also has different forms with different information on them for me to verify my Vermont license. And neither state would accept the paperwork of the other. After talking to both offices for a long time on the phone and two trips to Concord with different paperwork, I was stuck between two states without a driver's license.

I then decided to simply drove to Montpelier and complain about the quality of the green license. I had to go to Montpelier because the White River Junction DMV office (which is 2 hours closer to home) is only open like every other Tuesday and is in a mobile van without a supervisor that can make decisions.

In Montpelier, the DMV lady agreed that my green photo-less license wasn't working out so well for me and gave me a photo license for free and I got my New Hampshire license the next day. Sort of.

New Hampshire only issues temporary licenses at the DMV. You have to wait 60 days for the real license! And I have heard from others that it can take longer than sixty days. And you are warned on the official paperwork that comes with your temporary license that the temporary license is not an official ID. Wish me luck.

Byssal Filaments in Mussels

Do you see the slender whitish "string" coming from this mussel? Those are called byssal filaments and they are why it can be difficult to pull a clam or mussel off of rocks. The mussel excretes these filaments in order to anchor itself to rocks in the ocean. It can take them from one day to a week to excrete the filaments. Other marine and freshwater bivalve mollusks also have these filaments.

Signs such as this sign on a private association beach on Long Island Sound litter the Connecticut shoreline. Legally, all people have rights to be on public beach, which is defined as the area below the mean high tide mark. This area is marked by debris, driftwood and seaweed. There is dry and wet sand.

The Connecticut shoreline is nearly all privately owned. The landowners are well-to-do. For ages they have blocked access to the intertidal zone and trespassers were prosecuted. Inner city kids couldn't experience the beach without paying exorbitant fees. They could go to the crowded and commercial state beaches that were not free. In the 1970s Ned Coll, a political activist in Hartford, agitated and won access to the public beaches by walking the high tide mark from Stonington (on the eastern end of the Connecticut shore) to Greenwich (on the western end).

Yet forty years later, there are still squabbles about how one is able to get to these public lands. A July 2009 article, Public access to the shorefront not always easy, in connpost.com, explains the various ways different shoreline towns restrict access to public land. The State of Connecticut makes the law very clear in the Connecticut Coastal Access Guide. Yet it is nearly silent about how one should get down to the public land.

Signs such as the one I photographed show that the conflict is still going on. I am old enough to remember the court fights and Ned Coll's march. I am so disappointed with the hostility and exclusivity that this sign represents.

In August 2009, unprecedented levels of [sea lettuce] washed up on the beaches of Brittany, France, causing a major public health scare as it decomposed. The rotting leaves produced large quantities of hydrogen sulphide, a toxic gas. In one incident near Saint-Michel-en-Grève, a horse rider lost consciousness and his horse died after breathing the seaweed fumes; in another, a lorry driver driving a load of decomposing sea lettuce passed out, crashed and died, with toxic fumes claimed to be the cause[1]. Lion’s Mane
(Cyanea capillata)

Also know as the winter jelly, the lion’s mane typically appears during colder months of the year. The bell, measuring 6-8 inches, is saucer-shaped with reddish-brown oral arms and eight clusters of tentacles hanging underneath. Cyanea are generally considered moderate stingers. Symptoms are similar to those of the moon jelly but, usually more intense. Pain is relatively mild and often described as burning rather than stinging. (source: Sea Science)
