It also has been applied to support the immune system and promote kidney health, as well as to prevent and abort pregnancy.

Other ailments where this herb might be helpful are to treat intestinal ailments such as Crohn's disease, gastric ulcers and tumors, parasites, colitis, gastritis, diverticulitis and leaky bowel syndrome. Preparations of cat's claw can also be applied to the skin.

Cat's Claw
Uncaria tomentosa

Origin:
Dried root bark of a woody vine that grows in the Amazon rain forests in Peru and other South American countries.

Dosage:
Capsules, tablets, liquid and tea bags; 250 mg to 1,000 mg daily. Buy only products that contain Uncaria tomentosa. Another plant (Acacia greggi), which also has the name cat's claw, is highly toxic.

Claims:
Believed to have anti-inflammatory properties; may stimulate immune system.

What we know:
Researchers in Peru state that anti-inflammatory properties may result from the ability to inhibit the cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α).

Studies:
In 2002, the Journal of Rheumatology published a randomized double-blind study of cat's claw for the treatment of RA. Researchers found the supplement modestly reduced joint swelling and pain in 40 people with RA. Cat's claw can cause headache, dizziness and vomiting, and can lower blood pressure, so don't use if taking an anti-hypertensive medication or blood thinner. Do not use if you have tuberculosis or are taking drugs that suppress the immune system.
~Arthritis Foundation.

Don't take it if you are allergic to plants in the Rubiaceae family and different species of Uncaria, it may cause an allergic reaction.

Even though it is already mentioned, one Cat's Claw is lethal, the other is medicinal. Adding this natural supplement to your daily routine is an excellent way to maintain great health. By keeping your body free of irritants and fats that are not very healthy for you to consume.

This oil contains essential fatty acids, which are precursors of prostaglandins, which must be present for functions involved with blood vessels, maintaining arterial pressure already within the normal range, metabolizing dietary cholesterol, activating T-lymphocytes, protecting against platelet aggregation and other functions.

It is also said to be an excellent acne treatment, but I also read that too much of it could cause Arthritis flare-ups.

Black Currant Oil
Ribes nigrum;

Origin:
Black currant seed oil is obtained from seeds of the black currant. Black currant seed oil contains 15 to 20 percent gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). It is oil from the seeds that is used for the remedy. And I will say it again and keep saying it, untill I am blue in the face from repeating it (or maybe it is from the black current berries, because I love them!): consult your health care provider.

Although the fruits are delicious and healthy, it is the ground that is at the foundation of it all. If the soil is no good, the fruit will be no good. We too, need to make sure the foundation we have is ready to receive and grow the seed, so we can yield good fruit as well. :-)

Matthew 13:23
But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-60089148413935349732008-08-11T06:25:00.000-05:002008-08-11T06:25:55.092-05:00Dressing GamesGetting lil Kc dressed is both a chore as well as a joy. I already learned pretty quick in order to keep him laying on his back, so I could change his diaper, or get his clothes on, I have to keep him busy. Usually, I give him something to hold, or play with. What happens if I don't? He turns over quicker then a bullet and takes off!

He sure knows how to make everything fun though. Whatever he has got his little hands on, he shakes it for a few and then let's go, sending it flying through the room. That in itself he thinks is already funny, but he sure bursts out laughing when he sees my pretended surprised 'What was that?'-face. This little game goes on until we are done.

He is getting more and more cooperative with getting him dressed, but he sure knows how to keep me busy as well. I don't mind at all. In fact, I love it.

I do have to keep in mind though, to give him something soft to play with. We like to keep our windows in one piece! :-)

Even though he keeps me busy, he also reminds me to see all the blessings in and from my labor, which makes it even more enjoyable to do. To look for those blessing and to count them on a regular base, is encouraging, uplifting and fills me with gratitude. And God gives so much to be grateful for and to enjoy.

Ecclesiastes 3:13
and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-1354825062631877132008-08-07T14:53:00.000-05:002008-08-07T14:54:10.451-05:00Borage SupplementThe borage plant is a native inhabitant of Northern America and Northern Europe, but the plant can easily be grown in gardens. It loves full sunshine and rich soil and can be sown throughout the year. If possible, shield it from wind, because it tends to fall over easily.

If grown in pots indoors, make sure to put it in the full sun and it will give you leaves throughout the entire winter.

For you garderners out there, Borage is an excellent companion plant for tomatoes, squash and strawberries. The plant actually improves the flavor of tomatoes growing nearby.

Borage Oil
Borago officinalis

Origin:
Oil from the seeds of the borage plant. Borage seed oil contains about 20 to 26 percent GLA.

Dosage:
Liquid and capsules; take 1,300 mg (oil) daily.
~Arthritis Foundation.

This tonic plant has some other medicinal effects as well. It is good for the adrenal glands and provides an invaluable support for a stressful lifestyle. Borage is rich in minerals, especially potassium and tea made with borage helps to reduce fevers and ease chest colds.
An infusion of borage acts as a galactogogue, promoting the production of milk in breastfeeding mothers.

Some other uses are:
Borage makes an excellent facial steam for improving very dry, sensitive skin and consider adding the dried flowers for color to potpourri.

The taste of the leaves comes close to cucumber and the flowers and leaves lend themselves excellent to garnish salads. dips, and cucumber soups.

The chopped leaves can be added to soups and stews during the last few minutes of cooking and leaves can be cooked with cabbage leaves as well.

It does not lend itself well to be dried, it may not yield the results you are looking for. No one will prevent you from trying though. :-)

If so many tell you something is not going to work, drawing on their own experiences, you may want to heed the warning. It does not mean it can not be done, it means it wasn't the right time to be revealed. Eventually it will be, in God's time. In the meantime, we can have faith and trust in God's provision. :-)

Ecclesiastes 3:11
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-11053642737423682582008-08-06T04:18:00.002-05:002008-08-06T04:20:05.866-05:00Splashing FunSunday morning, time to get lil' Kc ready for church. A bath is in order, but first I have to clean up a big mess. The little stinker managed to produce a huge present for me.

I get him out of his pyjamas, get rid of his present and the sticky residue left behind (don't you just love the picture I just painted you? Grin). And off to the bathroom we go.

He is standing next to me, waiting impatiently to get in the tub, while I mix the water to a comfortable temperature. It is ready and I am about to pick him up and lift him in the bath tub.

I turn towards him, just in time to catch him looking down at the floor. He looks up at me, with this angelic, innocent expression on his little face. What's that all about? Looking down, I notice the puddle at his feet. Uh oh, maybe it's time for potty-training? I clean it up, while he is splashing around, having a ball.

It seemed like he was big on making messes, that particular morning. Thinking back on when the girls were little though, there really is nothing new under the sun. I suppose the only difference is, being a grand mother and not having to do it 24/7, leaves more room for enjoying it and seeing the comical side of it.

Yeah, I enjoy it to the fullest. :-)

I am fully aware that when he is over here, he totally depends on us and trusts us to see to his needs. He has faith, that whatever mess he makes, it will be taken care of. It pleases me to no end and only increases my love for him even more, if that is possible.

I can only imagine how Our Father must feel, when we totally depend on Him, trust Him and place all our faith in Him.

Matthew 18:4-7
4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-7652690852174753442008-08-01T08:00:00.001-05:002008-08-02T04:21:38.004-05:00Joys and MessesSunday morning. Son-in-law got back from work and picked up April and Leo, to go home and get ready for church.

We had agreed to keep our lil' Kc and get him ready for church. That would take a little pressure off of them and they wouldn't have to rush that much.

To get him ready meant to give him a bath and get him all dressed up. I made sure he had breakfast already before cleaning him up, so he would not get his clothes dirty. That turned out to be a smart idea.

He loves to eat and he likes all the different flavors oatmeal. I fixed him a bowl of oatmeal, let it cool, and set him at the dinner-table.

More then half the bowl was gone in a jiffy. All that time he is making fun. Pointing, wanting to know what things are called, laughing and grinning at me. I can tell when he is getting full. No, he does not keep his mouth closed and refuses another bite. He opens his mouth, sticks out his tongue with oatmeal and all and will either let it dribble out, or pick it of his tongue.

At that point, two things can happen. The first one is, he hands it back to me. That is very convenient when it's a sandwich, meat, or veggies. The second one is, he starts picking it apart. Believe me, you don't want that to happen. It is messy business. Especially with oatmeal!

Well, it happened, haha. With a little diversion and play, he managed to finish the oatmeal without too much of a mess though. I can't wait till he is eating by himself. It is such a joy to watch him grow up.

The sticky messes? I really don't mind cleaning them up. :-)

We all learn by trial and error and it can happen that we make a mess in the process. It is part of it and all for learning purposes. It's a comfort to know, God is there as well, to help us clean it up and comfort and encourage us.

Matthew 11:29
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-74171865816995599722008-07-29T10:01:00.000-05:002008-07-29T10:01:50.789-05:00Bromelain SupplementA while back I did a post on this and you can find it in the side-bar under RA-articles. In case I missed something, here is some additional information.

Pineapples are from origin native American plants, but became widespread through the tropics by sailors, who planted them wherever they landed, because the fruit contained the vitamin C to prevent sailor's scurvy.

Bromelain
Pineapple, Ananas comosus

Origin:
Group of enzymes found in pineapple that break down protein.

Dosage:
Capsules and tablets; take 500 mg to 2,000 mg three times a day between meals.

Claims:
Decreases pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and OA, and increases mobility.

What we know:
There is some evidence that enzymes like bromelain have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects comparable to NSAIDs.

Studies:
A 2005 study done in Germany showed that bromelain activated immune cells that fight infection.

Bromelain can cause stomach upset and diarrhea and should be avoided if you are allergic to pineapples. It can also increase the effect of blood-thinning medicine.
~Arthritis Foundation.

It can be eaten plain but also mixed in with a salad. Canned fruit is great for baking, but don't use it with gelatin, because the enzymes keep it from setting. It is a great meat tenderizer and adds flavor to marinades.

It is simple to grow it yourself. Place the cut-off top with the leaves in a bowl of water and it will root within a few weeks. You can then plant it in the yard, or a pot and grow your own fruit.

Remarkable, how quick and easy it roots. The results are seen in no time. The same goes for our words. They have an immediate effect and can be ingrained quickly. So we better make sure the words we utter are true and yield good fruit.

Isaiah 57:19
" I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near," Says the LORD, " And I will heal him."Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-51718128731662140382008-07-28T03:05:00.002-05:002008-07-28T03:27:49.214-05:00Food PoisoningIt was Sunday morning 3:30 AM, when the phone rang. Uh, oh, at that time, that can only mean something bad happened. And it had. Both April and Ray got food poisoning and April asked us to watch the kids, while they were going to the ER. Of course we will, no problem.

April was in a better shape then Ray and she didn't need for us to drive them over. She dropped the kids off about half an hour later. Leo was wide awake and as happy as ever, holding his bottle, smiling while he was drinking. Lil' Casey was in his usual fun making mood, although you could notice he knew something was up, since he got woke up so early. That didn't stop him though.

Amber took care of Leo and both disappeared in her bedroom, where they went back to sleep. Lil' Casey had his play cell phone with him and was just happy to sit on the couch, in between us. Talking and laughing. He managed to stay up till about 6, when I took him to the bedroom to put him to sleep.

April and Ray called, they were being taken care off, but it could take a while. Eventually, they got home around 10.30 AM, both feeling a bit better, but exhausted. The medication that was prescribed, took them out for almost the rest of the day.

It was around 5 PM when April came over. She was doing alright and Ray was feeling better, but still not up to snuff. Hopefully he will this morning, since he starts a new job. April and the boys left after 7 and I can tell you one thing, she left three tired people behind, haha. But it was worth it.

A good thing we always are up early. A better thing, we are able to take up the slack when it's needed. Combine that, with spending an entire day with the grandchildren, and we have a lot to be thankful for! :-)

The best thing however is, we did not have to do it alone. God gives what is needed. We could not have done it without Him!

Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-30136219352140993622008-07-25T07:25:00.000-05:002008-07-25T07:25:16.781-05:00Cherry Flavored FunThe other day April and our little critters came buy to spend the evening. As soon as she opened the front door, lil' Kc stepped in, ran up to me with one of his little arms stretched out.

He was so eager to show me what he got. I picked him up, just as April, who stepped in carrying our Leo said: "Don't touch him, he is sticky all over!"

Yup, I discovered that, since I had picked him up already. He had been sucking on a candy pacifier. His little face, hands and clothes, were covered with a thin layer of the sticky, sugary substance and he had already rubbed it off on me as well.

"Ohhh, he got it on your clothes now too!", April said.
I couldn't help but smile and told her I didn't mind. That's what the washer was for. Enjoying and sharing his enthusiasm, was much more important, then the stains on my clothes.

And he was more then willing to share. He tried to pop it in my mouth several times. I took his hand and pretended to taste it, while he had the biggest smile on his little face, as if he wanted to say: "Isn't that good?!"

Yes, it was good. I got a taste of it, when I wiped the stickiness of my face. It was cherry flavor by the way. :-)

It's so good to see him be so happy and wanting to share with others. I hope he will always keep that and we will try to encourage him in it. Leading by example is a good way to show and teach. God has given us all we need to do so.

Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-87473334037788567012008-07-23T06:05:00.000-05:002008-07-23T06:05:56.258-05:00Making FunApril and her boys stayed the night the other weekend. Ray had to work and she is not really very comfortable, all by herself. We told her she could spend the night if she wanted to, which she did.

Both boys are such a joy and almost always in a good mood. Leo loves to converse and keeps smiling from ear to ear. He can be so totally fascinated with observing your face, or watching TV.

Lil' Casey, even though only 15 months old, makes fun. And I mean he really makes his own fun! He finds fun in everything, anything, or nothing, for that matter. He can walk around by himself, stop, point at something, utter some gibberish and laugh out loud.

He also loves to make people laugh. Out of the blue he lets out a "Hehe", waits to see if someone is laughing and if not, he repeats it. A little more longer this time: "Hehehehehe".

He always gets someone to laugh. Mostly me. No wonder, Oma is his biggest fan! :-)

His joyful and playful demeanor reminds me to count my blessings more often, and not linger on the concerns. Even in the greatest trials, there are blessings and joys to be found. What greater joy can be found, then in the knowledge that God loves and cares for us?!

Psalm 16:11
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-33882046724369197152008-07-19T09:09:00.004-05:002008-07-19T09:20:04.326-05:00He Did ItOur 5 month old grand son is just as cute as his big brother. He is always smiling and his smile is so big, I sometimes am afraid it is going to crack his little face open.

He loves to stand up and the way he watches his big bro, indicates how much he would like to get up and play with him. It will happen soon enough, he has to get all the other parts down first, like sitting up, crawling, etc. But, he is well on his way.

Last Saturday, he was laying on the floor on a blanket, looking around, enjoying all the attention. He had been trying to roll over. He has been coming close, but hadn't succeeded yet. He keeps on trying though.

Both his Mom and me watched as he rolled to his side. We could see him push himself a bit further, to a point where he was balancing between rolling over on his tummy, or rolling back.

"That's how far he gets, all the time", his Mom said. "Although, it seems like he might make it this time?".

Just as she had said it, he rolled over to his tummy, for the first time! We both were so excited and proud of him. Not to mention the little critter himself.

Leaning on his arms, he looked around with a huge, victorious smile on his face, as if he was to say: "Look, I did it.

Yes my little man, you did it!!! :-D

Romans 5:3-4
3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-19075445785078792932008-07-16T05:49:00.004-05:002008-07-16T08:13:22.025-05:00Our Little RascalLil' Casey stayed with us last weekend. When I put him to bed, it is always difficult for me not to keep him up and play with him.

When I put him down I lay beside him, until he falls asleep. If I don't, he climbs out of bed and is back in the living-room before I am. He looks around at first and then at me. I pretend to be sleeping, otherwise he wants to get up.

He grabs my hand and starts clapping mine with his, puts my hand down, picks it up again and claps on it. Since he gets no reaction, he lifts his little arms above his head and starts clapping himself.

Okay, that doesn't work either. All that time I am watching him through my eye-lashes and have a hard time not to smile. Then he starts laughing out loud. Hehe.... waiting, hehehehe. No reaction. He gives up. His eye-lids are slowly closing and even the heavy thunderstorm can not keep him awake any longer.

I slowly slip out of bed and go back to the living-room. By that time he is already exploring dreamland.

Little does he know, how Oma had to bite her tongue not to laugh out loud with all his cute little attention drawers. One day I will tell him. :-)

I hope and pray he will never loose the ability to find joys and blessings in all that comes his way, but we will make sure he knows how blessed he is to be a child of God and always rejoice in and with Him.

1 John 3:2
Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-46192734458730519212008-07-10T03:57:00.000-05:002008-07-10T03:58:23.078-05:00ASU SupplementSince I have been warning you about supplements, I thought I would save you the time by looking up and sharing some supplements with you, that might be beneficial for whatever ails you.

These supplements are not only safe and recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, but many other positive experiences and articles can be found online. One of them is

"Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables (ASU)

Origin:
A natural vegetable extract made from avocado and soybean oils.

Dosage:
Softgel; take 300 mg daily.

Claims:
Slows the progression of osteoarthritis (OA).

What we know
Experts think ASU slows the production of some inflammatory chemicals the body makes. By doing so, ASU may help prevent the breakdown of cartilage.

Studies:
In 2002, the Cochrane Review, an independent health organization based in Oxford, England, examined herbal therapies for OA and concluded ASU had convincing evidence. Specifically, a 2003 study published in the Journal of Rheumatology reported ASU inhibited the breakdown of cartilage and promoted repair.

The French government has tracked ASU's safety record for more than 15 years and has yet to find any significant problems."
~Arthritis Foundation.

It will not do you any good to eat many avocados and lots of soy beans. The medicinal oil from both comes in such a small portion, you would have to eat yourself sick and still wouldn't achieve the result you are looking for.

Best is to buy this supplement, but again the recommendation: talk or ask your doctor before you do so.

Sometimes we work ourselves to the point of exhaustion and still don't reach the goal we have in mind. Often we find out by talking to others, or after having done some study, we were totally on the wrong track and there was a much better and easier way.

Improving our spiritual life is essential, also for an overall healthier mental, physical and emotional life. Prayer is one big part of it, but fellowship and Bible study are just as important.

The encouragement, interaction and road-map to life, make it easier to get and stay on track. God provides in everything. :-)

Colossians 2:2
that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ,Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-87039931557343419832008-06-30T04:32:00.006-05:002008-06-30T05:48:43.512-05:00Critter's Cooings Part VIIHey there!
Long overdue, I know, but I have been so busy with growing and exploring and discovering, I didn't get around to it. Oma finally sat me down and told me to put my little fingers where my mouth is ( yeah, I talk my little head off, hehe).

So here is me, little Leo. Nice to meet y'all, finally. grin.

Today, I am exactly 5 months old. I am always in a good mood, laugh and smile and love to talk. As far as you can call it talking, haha. I put my entire little body in squeaking out coos. Apparently that's funny, cause they all laugh when I do. I almost am rolling myself over, but I haven't mastered that too well, yet.

Oma thinks I am a smart little critter as well. I can sit there and observe her face so seriously, like I have never seen anything so weird before. Well Oma... I haven't, hahaha.

She tries to teach me to stick out my tongue and blow raspberries.

As you can see, I have the sticking-out-my-tongue part down. :-D

I love watching my big brother and wish I could get up and run with him. I am trying to stand, which goes well as long as someone holds me up. :-) My little leggies are getting stronger each day and have filled out well. Oma has got 4 chunkies to pinch now, and she takes every opportunity she gets, to do so.

I have to tell you, my big bro is so sweet to me. He brings me blankets when he thinks I am cold. When I cry, which is only when I am hungry and want my bottle ( and when I want it, I want it NOW, hehe), Casey brings me the bottle or my pacifier. He caresses my little head and tries to give me toys as well. Ain't he sweet?!

He got to play with some balloons at my Mom's birthday and found out, they would pop when he bit them. Scared him more then it did me, hehe. Although, he ain't afraid of anything!

He just picked up the pieces, gave 'em to Oma and got another balloon to play with.

Speaking about my Mom, she is trying to get a bit of extra income. She is an Avon-representative now. If you would, go visit her at http://youravon.com/astalheim and if you think it's only for women, you are so wrong! They have men's stuff as well and even purses and clothes and I don't know what else. She would be pleased to see y'all. :-)

Sorry, I just had to sneak that in, hehe.

Wow, it took me a while to get all this on paper. My little hands are not entirely coordinated yet. I can hold my bottle though and even stick my pacifier in my mouth. Guess what, it doesn't work that well trying to stick it in backwards. But I am getting better with steering my hands. Practice makes perfect, huh?! :-D

It was fun talking to y'all and I promise, I won't wait another five months to come back here. In the mean time, I hope God blesses y'all abundantly! :-)

Proverbs 10:22
The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-11574562608785801662008-06-25T08:11:00.000-05:002008-06-25T08:12:19.462-05:00Look Before You LeapAds and commercials may prompt you to do something about your health. And what is easier then taking supplements, which promise to cure whatever it is that ails you.

Friends and family may recommend, or even strongly advise you, to take something they heard worked. Maybe they have been taking it themselves and experienced some benefits. Even though their intentions are good and it is done out of love and care, be extremely cautious.

Once again, don't just buy and take it, without proper information. And if you are not sure, ask your doctor. There is nothing easier then to make a phone call to ensure your health!

Here are some other guidelines to help you determine whether you should supplement:

"Whether that register is in a drug store, discount chain, grocery store or health food store is not as important as whether the brand is trustworthy and the product has been studied. A handful of private organizations are in the business of keeping tabs on supplements, each offering a variation on a certificate or seal for supplements it deems consumer-worthy. The three main companies cornering the certification market are ConsumerLab.com, NSF International and United States Pharmacopeia (USP). All three test supplements to determine, among other things, if what's in the bottle sizes up to the label'’s ingredient list. Look for a blue and yellow United States Pharmacopeia (USP) seal or a symbol from NSF or Consumer Lab.com.

Because you are your own best health advocate, make sure you answer these questions before you swallow anything.

- What are the claims made about the supplement? Are they realistic?
- Why might this supplement be worth taking? What effects is it supposed to have?
- Are there unbiased studies or history of use to show it's safe? Will the manufacturer provide a copy of studies for you to review with your doctor?
- What are side effects you might experience?
- How much should you take?
- What time - and how many times per day - should you take it?
- Will it interact with other medications you are taking?
- Will it interact with other supplements you are taking?
- Will it interfere with other medical conditions you have?
- How long should you take it?
- How long before you see results?
- Is it worth the price?
- Is the brand reputable?

If, after answering these questions, you decide a supplement is worth a try, follow this advice to achieve the best results and help ensure your safety:

- Let your doctor know the supplements you are taking.
- Know that some supplement can affect the outcome of medical tests.
- Try one new supplement (single active ingredient) at a time, and keep a record of its effects. Note the brand name and the dose.
- Don't take more than the recommended amount. You can overdose on anything, no matter how "safe" it appears to be.
- Keep a list of all of the supplements you are taking, along with your other medications. Don't stop taking your prescription medications, unless your doctor tells you to.
- Call your doctor if you have any unusual symptoms or feel worse after using a supplement. Be sure to keep the container the supplement came in."
~Arthritis Foundation.

Let me put it this way: you don't get a knife and cut your own arm off, just because you are told or promised, it will improve your health. I have no doubt your eyes would pop open wide in disbelief and you would ask a lot of questions, before even considering doing what was suggested.

Why? Maybe because cutting off your own arm inflicts pain and has a damaging effect on you right away?

Okay, okay, I have gotten on to y'all enough about being careful when it comes to supplements and vitamins. I do hope though, it did instill the desire to make inquiries before swallowing anything that is handy, recommended, or presented to you.

Ignorance is not a bliss, it can be very harmful. Gathering up information can only make you more knowledgeable and add to your wisdom. Do not take for granted, whatever you are told by men, is always true. The only true words are God's. We don't have to question or doubt them, just accept and follow them. They are only for our best. :-)

Proverbs 1:5
let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-258504537251428552008-06-18T03:51:00.001-05:002008-06-18T03:52:27.555-05:00Stay Away! You already know by now to be careful when using botanicals and other supplements. You may seem to be doing fine at the start, but it can ruin you in the long run.

That goes for any temptation. It may feel good in the beginning, but in the long run the effects are devastating. God gives us the strength to overcome temptation and the opportunity to flea from it . It is our choice, decision and responsibility to do so!

James 1:12
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love HimCorryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-21608893475367075062008-06-09T04:46:00.001-05:002008-06-09T04:47:14.509-05:00Supplementing FactsAlthough it may not seem so, supplements and vitamins are actually a form of medication. As the word already indicates, they are to supplement the deficiency that may have occurred, or strengthen the immune system to fight diseases. They also can give the body what it needs, to keep functioning and remain healthy.

Most vitamins and supplements are being taken in on a daily basis. With a healthy diet, the likely hood of a shortage of vitamins and supplements are slim to none. However, in our current lifestyle, time is sparse and "fast-food" is a quick and easy way out. Yup, that last goes for the so needed vitamins as well, haha.

In case you do need to supplement, keep this in mind:

"What are dietary supplements?
Dietary supplements, including plant- and animal-derived products, are not classified as or considered to be drugs, but that doesn't mean they can'’t act like them. To be classified as a dietary supplement, a product must be taken by mouth and contain a "dietary ingredient"-that is, a substance intended to be taken in addition to, not instead of, consuming healthy foods. Overall, dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, botanicals, amino acids and any part of those substances, such as extracts or concentrates.

Why do I need to talk to my doctor about the supplements I take or want to take?
Plants produce chemicals just as people and animals do. Those chemicals, although from a source found in nature, can have effects in the body that range from mild to potent, just like chemicals produced in a laboratory. Because supplements are, in fact, chemicals, they have the potential to interact with the chemicals in man made medications. That's why you need to get the go-ahead from your doctor about supplements - not just once, but each and every time you consider trying one.

How are dietary supplements different from medication?
When you go to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, you have three layers of protection between you and the product. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed and approved it, your doctor has considered your history and prescribed it, and your pharmacist alerts you to possible interactions with other medications you're taking. Even with an over-the-counter medication, there's the FDA layer of protection, and your pharmacist is accessible to answer questions. But with a dietary supplement, there are no protective layers between your hand and the product on the shelf.
~Arthritis Foundation."

Having to add what you lost, should tell you that something is wrong. Instead of constantly dealing with the consequences and supplementing to make up for it, it is better to attack the problem. Diet and exercise can improve both your health and your overall life.

The same goes for the inner-man. The Bible is a healthy diet (food for thought you can never get enough of and munch on all day) and exercising God's Word will improve your spiritual health and save your life. No supplements needed, ever. :-)

Psalm 119:50
This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-71724796699036157112008-05-30T05:36:00.000-05:002008-05-30T05:37:24.048-05:00Wisdom Takes TimeWhile reading, you may encounter some words or terms, you may not be familiar with. You may already know the meaning of some of them, but it doesn't hurt to refresh your memory.
Here is a list of the most commonly used terms and their explanation:

Clinical trials: Human studies.
Cytokines: Chemicals produced by the body that trigger the inflammatory process, for example, C-reactive protein, interleukins, tumor necrosis factor (TNF).
DHA: Docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, found in fish oil.
EPA: Eicosapentaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, found in fish oil.
mcg: Microgram: a unit of measurement, 1/1000 of a milligram.
mg: Milligram: a unit of measurement, 1/1000 of a gram.
NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Since we are becoming much more conscious about our health, our food, exercise, activities and medications, we tend to be a bit too quick and too drastic, by grabbing anything of the shelves that we may think would be beneficial. Resist the temptation and look before you leap.

You may have heard great testimonies of others, who have used a vitamin or supplement. Keep in mind, what works for them does not necessarily mean it will work for you. There are a lot of things to take into consideration, before supplementing.

"The claims about what supplements are supposed to do for you certainly may tempt you to try one, two or more. But practice safety first. Trying a supplement shouldn't be a decision you make on a whim, while you're browsing through products on a shelf. Learn all you can about products before you risk your money or your health. To be a savvy consumer and make the right choice, follow these seven tips:

- Be wary of unrealistic claims, such as the product will "cure" or "prevent" arthritis. It is illegal for supplements to make such claims.
- Talk to your doctor about a supplement and whether it would be safe to try.
- Do not stop taking your prescription medications unless directed by your doctor.
- Find out if the supplement will interact with other medications or other supplements you are taking.
- Determine if potential side effects outweigh the potential benefit.
- Shop around for reputable brands.
- Know how much to take and how often to take it.
~Arthritis Today, Arthritis Foundation."

Don't react on a feeling. It may be a false feeling of obligation, or an invalid feeling. Don't let yourself be pushed into using a product, because of the convincing advertisements. Whatever someone is trying to convince you of, it may not be for the best. Take your time to read up on it, learn, and study.

It is always best, not to blindly follow the herd. Just because the majority of the people may do something, still does not mean it is the route to go. Even when they are leaning hard on you and try to push you in a certain direction, ward off the "peer" pressure. There is absolutely nothing wrong in taking a time out to think, but absolutely everything wrong with walking right into temptation's claws!

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-48826117242225103112008-05-24T07:05:00.000-05:002008-05-24T07:10:35.136-05:00Stirring The PotBotanicals and herbs all have their own unique consistency and contain different vitamins, supplements, medicinal ingredients, chemicals and some even poisons! So be careful before you resort to them.

When you do, make sure to stick to the recommended dose and the preparation methods. There are several ways how botanicals and herbs can and should be used. Below are some of the terms explained, you may encounter.

"Tea:
Tea is one of several ways botanicals are sold. Also called an infusion, tea is made by adding boiling water to fresh or dried plant products - stems, leaves or flowers, usually - and steeping them to release their active ingredients. Tea isn't the only way that botanicals and herbs can be used.

Concoctions and Decoctions:
Tea requires just a few minutes of steeping but some plant products require a little more time for their active ingredients to be released. A concoction is simply a mixture of herbal ingredients that can be prepared in a variety of ways, usually with heat. When the heating method is boiling, the mixture - usually of roots, bark or berries - is called a decoction.

Liquids, Extracts and Tinctures:
Botanicals are sold in liquid forms, such as oils, extract-containing drinks, syrups and tinctures. Tinctures are preparations made with alcohol and water. Extracts can be made with many different liquids (solvents), and that liquid is often evaporated to make a dry extract. Dry extracts are put into capsules and tablets. Tinctures and extracts are usually more concentrated than teas. When looking at the recommended dose, it is important to notice the form of the product. For example, a dose might be three cups of tea per day or one to three teaspoons tincture per day.

Fresh or Dried Herbs:
Herbs can be grown at home or purchased fresh-cut at a market. Air-dried, freeze-dried or fresh, herbs can be used in cooking or for making tea.
~Arthritis Today, Arthritis Foundation."

Although it may seem, because all these herbs and botanicals are natural, you can't go wrong with it, I have to emphasize again... you can! Taking too much, or not preparing it the way it should, can lead to either results to the contrary, or no results at all. So, read up on it before stirring the pot.

It is not good to "wander off" on your own. Even though you may have the best intentions in mind, you might think you are doing one thing, while you actually are doing another. You may not achieve your goal, if you don't know what guidelines to follow and might end up hurting others as well as yourself.

God made accommodations for us to know what to do, and how to do it. His guidelines are easy to understand and to follow and will yield the best result. Therefor, be open to His instructions and guidance. The Bible is full of it! :-)

Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-6604019863428553042008-05-17T06:45:00.000-05:002008-05-17T06:45:27.248-05:00Safety FirstThroughout time, many have found a cure for ailments in herbs, oils and tinctures, by using what naturally grew "by the wayside" so to speak. Mother Nature has always been an excellent source for medications. Her healing powers are remarkable and astonishing.

However, I would like to instill on you again the importance of being careful with taking natural supplements. Even though nature provides, if taken without any knowledge and good directions, it may backfire on you. Yes, even natural products can have negative or bad side-effects.

Be Safe, Be Savvy When Taking Supplements.
A certain supplement may sound like just the thing you need to feel better and improve your health, but remember it's your health that's on the line when you plunk down money at the register.

Whether that register is in a drug store, discount chain, grocery store or health food store is not as important as whether the brand is trustworthy and the product has been studied. A handful of private organizations are in the business of keeping tabs on supplements, each offering a variation on a certificate or seal for supplements it deems consumer-worthy. The three main companies cornering the certification market are ConsumerLab.com, NSF International and United States Pharmacopeia (USP). All three test supplements to determine, among other things, if what's in the bottle sizes up to the label's ingredient list. Look for a blue and yellow United States Pharmacopeia (USP) seal or a symbol from NSF or Consumer Lab.com.

Because you are your own best health advocate, make sure you answer these questions before you swallow anything. You can find some answers right here in this A-to-Z guide or by talking with your doctor.

-What are the claims made about the supplement? Are they realistic?
-Why might this supplement be worth taking? What effects is it supposed to have?
-Are there unbiased studies or history of use to show it's safe? Will the manufacturer provide a copy of studies for you to review with your doctor?
-What are side effects you might experience?
-How much should you take?
-What time - and how many times per day - should you take it?
-Will it interact with other medications you are taking?
-Will it interact with other supplements you are taking?
-Will it interfere with other medical conditions you have?
-How long should you take it?
-How long before you see results?
-Is it worth the price?
-Is the brand reputable?

If, after answering these questions, you decide a supplement is worth a try, follow this advice to achieve the best results and help ensure your safety:

-Let your doctor know the supplements you are taking.
-Know that some supplement can affect the outcome of medical tests.
-Try one new supplement (single active ingredient) at a time, and keep a record of its effects. Note the brand name and the dose.
-Don't take more than the recommended amount. You can overdose on anything, no matter how "safe" it appears to be.
-Keep a list of all of the supplements you are taking, along with your other medications. Don't stop taking your prescription medications, unless your doctor tells you to.
-Call your doctor if you have any unusual symptoms or feel worse after using a supplement. Be sure to keep the container the supplement came in.
~Arthritis Foundation.

Those practising natural healing and using natural remedies, were often seen as practitioners of witchcraft. Let's keep in mind though, the pharmaceutical industry is based on, and often uses, natural ingredients for their products.

Don't go "wandering off" by yourself and your own judgement. Keep in mind, even the knowledge of Homeopathy is acquired through a long and intensive study!

So is the knowledge of God's word. Bible study teaches us how to become a better person, how to live according to His commandments and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It is not something you learn overnight, it is a life-long process. But it is a very pleasant, comforting, peaceful and secure one, walking in and with Jesus and with the encouraging fellowship of our brothers and sisters. :-)

1 John 1:3
that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-74172180220093912552008-05-09T05:05:00.003-05:002008-05-09T05:55:43.061-05:00Tree HuggerBeing outdoor is always restful and relaxing. Taking the "outdoors" in, is helpful, healthy and can be extremely medicinal. I am talking about all natural herbs and oils. Many of them contain substances and supplements that can either cure all kinds of ailments, or are extremely helpful toward easing the pain.

These supplements are often referred to as Homeopathic. Even though they are all natural, that doesn't mean you can take them whenever and as much as you like. Too much can cause some side-effects you would rather avoid. So, stick to the recommended dose!

"Pine Bark Extract Relieves OA Pain, Improves Function

A new study to be published in the April 2008 edition of the Journal of Phytotherapy Research shows Pycnogenol, an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, reduced osteoarthritis symptoms by 56 percent.

In the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, held at Italy's Chieti-Pescara University, 156 patients with knee OA received 100 mg of Pycnogenol or placebo, daily for three months and were then evaluated using a number of tools. Patients were permitted to continue taking their choice of pain medication provided they recorded every tablet in a diary for later evaluation.

The pycnogenol group also:

- Experienced a 55 percent improvement in joint pain
- Reduced pain medication use by 58 percent
- Had a 63 percent improvement in gastrointestinal complications
- Reduced stiffness by 53 percent
- Improved physical function scores by 57 percent
- Enhanced overall well-being by 64 percent

"The results of this study are significant as they clearly demonstrate the clinical action of Pycnogenol on OA and management of symptoms," says Gianni Belcaro, MD, PhD, a lead researcher of the study. I know from experience they do an excellent job. Sometimes it is inevitable to have to take pharmaceutical medications, in which case the same warning is in effect: stick to the recommended dose!

We all need guidelines and directions when we don't know what to do, or what would be best. In this case, the general and homeopathic physicians and pharmacies have the knowledge and clearly give recommendations. We would do well to follow their guidelines.

God's recommendations are clear as well. His word is guidance and leadership, available to anyone who is willing to follow it. It is the road map to inner-healing and everlasting life! :-)

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-23005167667519869842008-04-30T07:24:00.002-05:002008-04-30T07:29:33.909-05:00Critters' Cooings Part VI Hey you guys!!! It's been a while since I have been talking to y'all, but I finally got around to it, as you can see. I stole Opa's chair while he wasn't looking. Yup, I got in it myself, since I climb up and down chairs and couches these days. Even coffee tables, but they won't let me do that. Why not? Beats me! Oma already got everything off of it when I am around. I like to investigate, hehe.

I am walking and running around for quit a while now. That can get me in trouble, but since they "baby-proof" and close all the doors, there is not much mischief I can get into. Besides, it doesn't bother me when the doors are closed. I lay in front of them and peek through the slits under the doors. Sometimes even try to stick my hands through and even talk through it. They ain't fooling me, hehe. Oma thinks that's both clever and funny.

Oma is dancing with me. She picks me up, holds her hand up, I put mine in hers and then we swirl around. I love it! She says I am always in such a good disposition, hehe. I like to make people laugh. Sometimes I just go like "hehe", watch how they react, go like "hehehe" again and they all start laughing.

Look how many teeth I already got and they are still coming in by the truckload. My hair has grown too and I have all those curls. No use brushing them, they stick out any way the can. Opa calls me "Cotton top, curly mop", haha.

Oma calls me "Squirmy boy", since I can't (or rather won't) sit still, haha. Too much to see and do. Except when I need to nap. No fooling around when Oma lays me down. No matter how hard I try. Make her laugh, share my pacifier with her ( just yank it in her mouth when she least expects it, grin), or try and explore her face and hair. Nope, "night-night" is "night-night"! That's okay, when she lays her hand on my forehead, I am usually off to dream land.

I like sharing, you wanna play with my toys? :-D

What I like most is eating!! Each time Oma goes to the kitchen, I run after her and go like: "Mmmmm"! No problem when it's time to eat and a snack in between is easy to get as well. But boy, that woman is hard to convince, after my tummy is full. Yeah, I would eat all the time if they would let me, sigh.

There are some comprehensive words coming out of my mouth, I still babble along a lot. I'll get the hang of it, hehe. The other day, Mom came to get me after I got up in the morning and I said: "Hi Momma". I could wrap her around my little fingers for the rest of the day, grin.

I wanted to talk about my brother Leo, but Oma says he needs to have his own space. Duh, like he can hit these keys. Not! Those little hands go anyway but where he wants him to. I love him though. I try to share my toys with him but Mom says he is still too little, so I give him kisses instead.

Me and Leo have been dedicated in church last Sunday. I am not sure yet what that means, but I have faith Mom and Dad will do a good job. Actually, both bro and me can rest assured the entire family will. :-D

I hope y'all are doing well. Gotta go now folks. I will try to get back sooner next time. I know you can't see it, but I am waving bye-bye! :-D

Psalm 34:11
Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-71734897743106157142008-04-23T04:19:00.003-05:002008-04-23T05:15:56.996-05:00Grandma Passed AwayYesterday, my Mom called to let me know that my grandmother had passed away last Sunday. It was to be expected. Grandma had been ill since last January and many in the family suspected she would not even make it till her birthday, which was end of February.

She did, and reached the respectable age of 102 years! The picture below was taken when she turned 100 years of age.

Things went downhill after Grandma's birthday. She deteriorated fast. She got cervical cancer and due to her age, the doctors didn't think it wise to do surgery. She got morphine for the pain and had to have astronaut food because she couldn't eat anymore. Physically, she got worse, but mentally she was very much up to date until the end. Praise The Lord!

I can not tell you if she was saved. I don't know, but I pray she was. I would like to see her again one day. :-)

Ephesians 2
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-55075695376654086202008-04-11T04:47:00.003-05:002008-04-11T05:58:33.589-05:00What's For Supper? When you suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis or any other related Arthritis disease, you can relate to this:
Your knees are killing you. Your fingers are stiff and anything you try to hold, hurts. Your wrists are so inflamed, every movement makes you want to scream. But... you have to eat and prepare a meal.

Been there, done that! I pushed myself through the pain and became resourceful in finding ways to make cooking easier. Here are some very useful tips complemented with my own findings:

Batch cook.
Prepare two chicken breasts at a time and refrigerate the leftovers to use in salads or sandwiches the next day.
You can also prepare more, put them in good freezer bags and freeze them. All you have to do is take them out and heat them in the micro-wave. It is super-easy and still as delicious as when you prepared it. Keep in mind though not to keep prepared meat in the freezer longer then about 4 months. After that it looses it's flavor.

Consider convenience.
Try frozen, pre-cut vegetables and fruits.
In spite of the common believe, frozen vegetables and fruits are just as healthy and rich in vitamins and nutrition as fresh!

Stock the crock.
Place meat or poultry, pre-sliced vegetables, spices and liquid in a crock pot, turn it on and hours later, enjoy a hot, cooked meal – and only one pot to wash.
You can also use a pressure cooker to reduce the time of preparing a meal.

Nuke it.
Microwaving can heat frozen vegetables or leftovers quickly, without adding fats or depleting nutrients. Using a microwave oven on the counter top eliminates stretching or stooping to cook.
Microwaving is a good alternative to heating up food. Experience has taught me though, that it cools of quicker and heating larger portions still take quite some time. Try placing food on the plate, heat and eat.

Grip with ease.
Use kitchen or cooking utensils with padded handles or grips.
If you don't have those, buy some cheap round foam insulation material. It already has a hole in the middle and slides over the utensils. Even over a knife and fork. It makes gripping and holding the utensils so much easier and less painful. I know, because I did it! :-) You can even put a piece in your purse or pocket to take with you and use in restaurants or anywhere else.

Belly up to the bar.
Instead of standing at your counter or stovetop, pull up a high barstool and sit down to chop, mix or stir.
It helps and if you don't have much space to put a stool, try one of those folding barstools. They take up less space and are light weight.
~Arthritis Foundation.

I hope these tips were of some help and if you have some of your own, I am eager to hear them! :-)

Even though it is very painful at times, you just have to push through it. It is better for staying mobile and it increases your pain-level. No, it's not easy, but in the end it will get better.

Not only physically we are challenged. We may go through lots of trials. They may be painful and difficult. Our faith is tried, but we push through it and not only do we come out stronger, things have turned out for the best!

Revelation 2:10
Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.Corryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05005702558743767245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17826874.post-65978401254148866452008-04-01T05:31:00.005-05:002008-04-01T06:38:54.580-05:00Redneck Lifestyle
You may already have seen our mansion on Kc's blog.
