What a COOL idea!ok, so if you've ever painted a painting without a title in mind...when you finish...guess what task is at hand? uh huh. The naming of the piece. After years of being around artists, I've figured out that some artists LOVE this task (and to them it's not a task at all) and some artists LOATH the task. In fact, it is not uncommon for an artist to tell me when I ask them, "so what's the title of this piece?" they say in response, "Rachel, you title it." Which of course becomes great fun for me, other than I have no idea if the title I come up with is anywhere NEAR where the artist was coming from when they painted it...but so be it.
anyway...3 years ago I learned of an online tv show called "Title This" and for some odd reason I ran across their site today where you can watch archived episodes.
Here's the scoop: per www.markkostabi.com

"Mark Kostabi's cult status TV show, TITLE THIS, a game show where art critics and celebrities compete to title Kostabi paintings for cash awards is now viewable anytime, online, at www.titlethis.com. For free, the site offers the latest episode plus a growing archive of past episodes. Participants have included: Molly Barnes, Luca Beatrice, Mark Bego, Andrea Bellini, Carly Berwick, Howard Bloom, Victor Bockris, Phyllis Braff, Lala Brooks, Stephanie Cash, Daniel Clowes, Ornette Coleman, Michelle Cone, Laura Cottingham, Ben Curtis, Adrian Dannatt, Liberty De Vitto, Sarah Douglas, Lavinia Filippi, Bonnie Fuller, Joe Fyfe, David Gibson, Micaela Giovannotti, Deven Golden, Michel Gondry, Bob Guccione Jr., Gary Indiana, Alan Jones, Randy Jones, Jason Edward Kaufman, Carol Kino, Glen Matlock, Jerry Marotta, Carlo McCormick, Taylor Mead, Sylvia Miles, Robert C. Morgan, Glenn O'Brien, Dennis Oppenheim, May Pang, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, Tommy Ramone, Christian Rattemeyer, Joao Ribas, Alessandro Riva, Walter Robinson, Willoughby Sharp, Amei Wallach, Lilly Wei and John Zinsser. Title This continues to be viewable also on every Wednesday night at 8:30 in Manhattan on Time Warner Cable on Channel 56, or on RCN on Channel 108, and on MNN's website every Wednesday night at 8:30 (New York time) at www.mnn.org, Ch56.
Can I just say...I love, LOVE the idea of this show! not to mention this game show is close to my heart as it's such fun to name paintings.
So to recap visit http://titlethis.com/ where you can watch "Title This" a game show where art critics and celebrities compete to title Mark Kostabi's paintings for cash awards.
How FUN is that???!!! Jillian is Lori Nunnery's daughter. Jilly's always been a big supporter of the Dickson Gallery and it was such fun to see her eyes light up when I told her that she could write anything on the walls she wanted on the night of our "final hurrah." The look on her face was priceless...I loved what she drew on the walls too. Besides "Silly Jilly", she drew a gun facing the outside of the gallery. (Best security system I could imagine). She also asked me if I would "petition" her mom that if she was good for the rest of the year, could she get $1...no $10, no $20. I asked...and Lori said yes. Not sure how well she's done in the endeavor...but hanging out with Jilly on Friday night made the blow of closing just a little bit softer.
Thanks Lori for sending copies of Jilly and I together, and thanks Jilly for adding a little bit of yourself to our gallery walls!
Rachel

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-45383735816600533082008-07-10T10:26:00.002-05:002008-12-10T21:25:13.192-06:00wall quote installment #2This quote found on the gallery wall Friday night June 27th needs a little interpretation. I was asked by an artist that night, "What is rule #6".
Rule #6 comes out of one of my favorite books of all time, "The Art of Possibility," by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander. What is it? Very simply, "Don't take life so G*D* seriously." Yes, a must-remember rule. One which I forgot too many times throughout the existence of the Dickson Gallery...and one I reminded myself of time and time again. Thank you Dr. Gina Heathcott for reminding me of this rule again.

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-78680166959505736292008-07-09T11:52:00.004-05:002008-12-10T21:25:13.405-06:00wall quote installment #1So we handed out sharpie markers at the final event June 27th and encouraged everyone to write whatever they wanted on the gallery walls. It was super cool to stand in each room and be surrounded by words of encouragement, favorite quotes and so forth. Lori Nunnery's daughter Jillian had a ball drawing on the walls. It was so fun to see her little eyes light up when I told her she could draw anything she wanted on the walls. A kids DREAM right? (I'll show you "silly Jilly's" drawings a bit later). Anyway, I thought it would be fun to show some of my favorites here in an installment format.
Today's quote is certainly one of my favorites. Written on the wall by one of the gallery's most loyal supporters, attorney Carl Seely. His mention of a "check cashing joint" made me laugh out loud. Here here Carl!! Agreed!!
There's many more super quotes written on the walls that I'll be listing here over the next few days and weeks. enjoy...Rachel

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-90897254060600292962008-06-28T22:36:00.005-05:002008-12-10T21:25:13.716-06:00these walls will talk...Well, it's a wrap. The Dickson Gallery of Fine Art most certainly went out with a bang Friday night. The "Final Hurrah" extended way into the wee hours of the morning...and Jackson came out in force to show their support one final time.
The celebration of what the Dickson Gallery was all about went brilliantly. People streamed down Lafayette Street passing saxophone player Denny Anderson (who played wonderfully last night...again!) and right on into the gallery. There were tears, there were accolades, there was art that found new homes. The Jackson Sun came, WBBJ tv came, ....and on and on.
I can't put into words the emotions I feel right now regarding last night. But I am very pleased with how it all concluded.
Everyone had fun writing words of thanks and quotes of inspiration on the walls, windows and doors. The walls will certainly be talking for some time to come.
I can tell story after story of things said, questions asked, answers given, so much of it full of emotion and meaning.
One of the many highlights was when one of my artists, Pat Findley, presented me with a painting of the front of the Dickson Gallery (image above) complete with me in the window behind the counter. (and lots of hand written memories on the back of the frame) OMG! priceless. Thank you PAT!!
I was also presented with a plaque last night by one of my dearest friends with a photo of the Dickson Gallery on the left and the following quote by Eleanor Roosevelt on the right:
"I have never felt that anything really mattered but the satisfaction of knowing that you stood for the things in which you believed and had done the very best you could."
yes, yes, yes!
An evening full of memories...one that will live on in my heart for a very long time.
Thank you to those who were there...to share in this experience.

This morning, a crew of friends showed up bright and early with trucks and trailers in tow to help me move out of the building. Wow...it sure does echo in there now...the emptiness of this place I've called home for 3 years is quite overwhelming. But the walls are still talking...and in seeing the words and drawings there I feel the support of those who put their comments all around me.
The building the gallery occupied sits empty now. We certainly raised the bar high for who follows and We pass the torch.
onward for the arts.
Rachel

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-72476855285695103552008-06-25T12:49:00.002-05:002008-12-10T21:25:13.727-06:00Online radio shows tribute to Dickson Gallery...Check this out. The Dickson Gallery will be closing its doors forever. But not until we host our "final hurrah" on Friday, June 27th from 7p-9p. You may have noticed on a drive by that the Dickson Gallery has be closed since May 21st. Due to renovation of the building next door, we closed our doors so that the structural issues to our building that surfaced could be addressed in a timely manner. Unfortunately, this did not occur and there's no end in site. Soooo, due to loss of income and this no-end-in-site, imminent-threat of-construction we've been forced to close our doors forever. We've decided that we MUST go out with a bang, therefore we're hosting a "final hurrah" of sorts on Friday, June 27th to celebrate all that was, all that is and all that will be. (Besides we all need closure with this horrible development). Please join us as we celebrate in Dickson Gallery style.
(click on our events page for all the details)

We know you love our art and certainly would never deprive you of the freedom to select from our fabulous array of original regional artwork! Think about this: your plan is getting in the way of your success and happiness! Too often people’s plans block inspiration, flexibility, receptivity, lateral thinking, eureka and other great things. Take time today to give up your plan for something even more divine, beautiful and wise."
Robert Holden

ok...I read this today...and I smiled. It certainly hit home with me. I've planned the best I can for the changes going on here at the Dickson Gallery (referencing the construction and repair work here on our building)...and so much for plans.
The rain has halted repairs delaying our reopening (or so it appears today). I'm not sure when our actual reopen date will be now. But I will certainly keep everyone informed as things progress as I'll know more in the next few days.
As a reminder, the Dickson Gallery will not be open for Fabulous Friday May 30th. However, there is a "meet the artists" opening at the Ned (across from the Greyhound Bus Station) tomorrow night from 6p-8p featuring the artwork of 2 of our artists and 1 who previously was a big part of the Dickson Gallery. Janice Sumler, Jette Garner and Dana Brooks.
So come on downtown anyway, and show your support for our local artists!
In the mean time, we're holding our heads high, navigating our way through the construction and will reopen AS SOON as possible.
Until then stop by and shop our online store: http://dicksongallery.ecrater.com
(it's not quite as much fun as shopping and visiting us here in person...but it's certainly a great substitute until we reopen)
Happiness and onward with the arts!
Rachel Dickson

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-25409020360491004852008-05-22T18:46:00.004-05:002008-12-10T21:25:14.570-06:00*#$x%!*$x!!!!! until June 17thWell, if you've driven by the Dickson Gallery lately you might have noticed the scaffolding and related construction going on to the building next door. Upon my return from vacation I was greeted with the news that the gallery will have to close temporarily for required structural repairs that have surfaced due to the construction next door. yeah. Did I say yeah?
So...until June 17th as best I can figure, the gallery will be temporarily closed for these repairs. But...BUT...do not fret, please do not fear...the artwork is safe and sound and can still be purchased through our new online store. Click here to view and purchase our artwork online.
Rest assured...me? It's ALL progress!
So I pull up to the gallery today, and can't help but notice that the front of the first level of the building next door to the gallery is GONE! you can see straight thru to the back wall.
Construction...or destruction...whichever. The building next door has sold, and has been undergoing renovations for a couple months. It's pretty much down to it's shell now.
I was standing on the sidewalk in front of the gallery talking to one of the construction guys when from rubble on the ground he picks up a small group of papers and hands it to me. No doubt whatever this was, was old! It had that "old" look to it...the paper was soft, and many pages had holes in them.
It was a checkbook...and the only handwritten thing in it clearly reads April 6, 1915!
Now that's REALLY strange. Almost 93 years ago to the date!!! Holy Smokes!!!
and then I found myself wondering...who lost their checkbook, and how odd that it surfaced over 90 years later. I have this checkbook sitting on my desk next to me, and am wondering if the gallery ghosts have been wandering around looking for this very checkbook. I've noticed that since they've been working on the building next door, the gallery "activity" has increased.
I've done my best to assure whoever these ghosts are that all will be well soon and they'll LOVE their new home in building next door when it's completed (as I think they used to hang out over there more than here previously).
So...a bit of history has surfaced today...from the hole in the wall next door.
Who knew? Just another step in the face lift of downtown Jackson.

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-83762567489938682542008-04-03T16:52:00.004-05:002008-04-03T17:00:38.212-05:00rain rain rain makes the grass grow and all things greener...One thing that's GREAT about rain...is one sure can get much accomplished indoors!
...and good things continue to happen in downtown Jackson. Now I'm not much of a pedicure, manicure sorta gal...but I can see that to have such treatment...ESPECIALLY in their new place. Oh my goodness!! Nothing but wonderful. And funny thing...Kat Semrau, owner of Art Under a Hot Tin Roof was the first to have a pedicure in their new space. I took a quick tour of the building to see what they've done to the place...and also to get a sneak peak of their services...doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out...top notch! You MUST visit them...SOON! (I probably should mention they also do hair...which I have very little of right now...so I won't be needed a cut or style for a while...but they certainly would make me look like a rock star based upon what I saw there today).
...and of course, our next big deal here at the Dickson Gallery is our 3rd Annual Venus Soiree (fancy term for fine art jewelry show). Featuring art jewelry by Jacque Hillman, Jai Johnson, Libby Lynch, Patricia Twilla and Holly Couch. And just in time for Mother's Day no less...
The big preview party for the Venus Soiree will be held April 25th from 7p-9p.
check it out on the web for all the artsy details at www.dicksongallery.com
until then...onward with the arts and downtown!
Rachel

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17653342.post-64842012193797011152008-03-29T11:33:00.004-05:002008-03-29T11:53:34.451-05:00Last night was FABULOUS!...Friday for sure...<photo>Last night (March 28th) was Fabulous Friday downtown and more importantly our "FAVR" sell-ART-bration, where we celebrated our 3rd birthday (having been in business for 3 years now). And "FAVR" of course standing for "Fine Art and Vinyl Records." Yes, I said vinyl records...and we had some great ones spinning last night at the gallery (thank you Kiersten for spinning for us).
Was a great birthday party or anniversary party, whichever way you want to "spin" it. We featured lots of new amazing artwork, served some killer chocolate cake, of course wine and cheese, and one of our artists even made sushi out of rice crispy treats and fish gummies. (those were a HUGE hit...thanks Janet Guptill for your food creativity). We also played various (super fun) vinyl records on our record player, and announced and presented the Dickson Gallery 2007 Artist of the Year.
We definitely felt quite appreciated as a gallery last night. The event was well attended by many of our gallery artists (thank you Pat Patrick, Pat Findley, Steve Betts, Steve Parrott, Janet Guptill, Cheres Pennington, Mary Spellings, Weldon Ball, Vickey Race, Jacque Hillman, and Tina Todd for attending!) and all of our community supporters! We received lots of fun gifts! Thank you ALL for those...I've got our new jazz collection cd playing right now in the gallery (thank you Chuck Hatfield!)
...and the press was there in force too. WBBJ TV covered Fabulous Friday in general on the "Live at 5" spot, The Jackson Sun and VIP magazine was both there to cover the festivities as well. SPECIAL thanks to them for getting the word out about the great things going on in the arts and downtown.
We also announced and presented our 2007 Artist of the Year Award winner last night. CONGRATULATIONS to the 2007 Dickson Gallery Artist of the Year winner....Weldon Ball!
so...check out what's on the Jackson Sun today about last night.
click here to see photos in the photo gallery submitted by Jackson Sun Photographer Amanda Herron.
until next time! ...onward for the arts!
Rachel</photo>

Rachelnoreply@blogger.com0
