Berlusconi recovering after broken nose

Italian PM still in hospital with fractured nose after man threw souvenir cathedral at him

The Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, will stay in hospital for at least one more day after being hit in the face when a statuette of Milan cathedral was thrown at him during a political rally yesterday.

A medical bulletin issued by the San Raffaele hospital in Milan confirmed that Berlusconi sustained a broken nose and two broken teeth.

It said he was taking antibiotics and painkillers because the pain was "persistent" and he was having difficulty eating.

His personal doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, said surgery would not be necessary but Berlusconi would remain in hospital until at least tomorrow.

The attack happened as the 73-year-old Italian leader signed autographs and greeted the crowd outside the cathedral.

He fell to the ground before being ushered into a car by aides but repeatedly tried to get out to show his bloodied face to the public and cameras in the square.

Zangrillo said he would be kept under observation and would need up to 15 days to recover.

The Italian prime minister asked to see the newspapers as soon as he woke up today, the Italian Ansa news agency reported.

He told Ansa he was "fine" and considered it a "miracle" that he had not been hit in the eyes.

Massimo Tartaglia, a 42-year-old Milan resident with a history of mental illness, was detained by police and was being questioned, Italian media reports said.

The attack was condemned across the political spectrum. Umberto Bossi, the leader of the Northern League party and Berlusconi's closest ally, described it as "an act of terrorism".

The opposition leader, Pier Luigi Bersani, said it was an "unspeakable gesture that must be firmly condemned".

Earlier in the evening Berlusconi told a rally to mark the opening to public membership of the People of Freedom party that his popularity rating stood at 63%.

He said his government had saved the world economy by persuading the US government to intervene "after they had left Lehman Brothers to their fate" in order to avoid "the failure of 400 banks, saving the world from an incredible and tremendous crisis".

At one point he interrupted the rally to address protesters who had been chanting "buffoon", telling them they should be ashamed of themselves.

He boasted that he was still "young and on form", opening his shirt to show that he "was not even wearing a vest".

It's great stuff.

Still, the main event is a mere ten minutes away.

EVENING EVERYONE!

Preamble

Finally. Finally. After one - two - three - four - five - six - seven - eight - nine weeks of liveshows, we have arrived at the X Factor final. And what do we have to show for it? Joe, Olly and Stacey. That's what. And one of them is going to be crowned X Factor king or queen this weekend - whether viewers like it or not. (What else do we have to show for it? Quite a lot of time spent in front of the TV - but luckily with fellow viewers just a comment away.)

So what are we promised this weekend? Olly singing with Robbie Williams, Joe with George Michael and Stacey with "dishy crooner" Michael Buble, according to ITV - though that may be not be an objective description. How will their duets sound? Will they raise the X-Factor roof? Has one of them drawn the short straw when it comes to singing partner?

All will be revealed, along with the usual rubbish Christmas ads, filler, and shock clothes/hair/make-up decisions on Saturday from 7.30pm, and again on Sunday at the same time. Very keen Cheryl Cole fans might be lucky enough to catch their favourite judge in Cheryl Cole's Night In, an hour of commissioning genius that begins at 6.30pm on Saturday - do let us know what you think. Others looking to fill a few moments might like to take themselves back to the heady days before everyone got booted out, with a reminder of the original 12 finalists - including, of course, John and Edward Grimes.

Silvio Berlusconi hit in the face

Italy's prime minister attacked while signing autographs after addressing crowds at party rally in Milan

Over the years Silvio Berusconi has taken more than a few figurative blows, but until today no one had actually landed one for real.

That all changed in Milan when Italy's prime minister was hit in the face and knocked to the ground by a man who, according to conflicting reports, either hurled a punch or a miniature metal souvenir of Milan's Duomo.

Berlusconi had been signing autographs and shaking hands with the public minutes after addressing crowds at a rally for his People of Freedom party in front of the Duomo when he was hit in the mouth.

He fell to the ground and was quickly ushered into a car by aides, but repeatedly tried to get out to show his bloodied face to the crowds and cameras in the square.

He was taken to a Milan hospital, where an x-ray showed he had suffered damage to two teeth. His doctor said he would be kept under observation for 24 hours.

"Berlusconi had a bag of ice over his face and appeared conscious," said a policeman in front of the hospital. The protester, 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia, was taken for questioning by the police.

Condemnation of the attack arrived from all sides of the political spectrum. "What they did to Berlusconi was an act of terrorism," said Umberto Bossi, the leader of the Northern League party and the prime minister's closest ally.

The opposition leader, Pier Luigi Bersani, said it was an "unspeakable gesture that must be firmly condemned".

Earlier in the evening Berlusconi had received a rock star's welcome at a rally to mark the opening of public membership to the People of Freedom party. Stating that his popularity stood at 63%, he listed the successes of the Italian government since he came to power, which he said had included saving the world economy by persuading the US government to intervene "after they had left Lehman Brothers to their fate" in order to avoid "the failure of 400 banks, saving the world from an incredible and tremendous crisis". He also credited himself with having halted the crisis between Russia and Georgia. "There were missiles aimed, we made them remove them," he said.

At one point he interrupted the rally to address a group of protesters on the sidelines, who had been chanting "buffoon" and "shame", saying they should be ashamed themselves.

"We would never (behave) like that," he told them.

Towards the end of the rally, he boasted that he was still "young and on form", opening his shirt to show the crowds that he "wasn't even wearing a vest", before he and a dozen ministers ended the rally with a singalong of the national anthem.
