I've had it with apricots too; I will ask my South African friend when she's back from visiting family, but I think the recipe is quite flexible. (I remember reading a John Tovey one called Party Bobotie which had several pints of cream slathered all over the top.) Almonds often seem to make an appearance too.

I've found (OK, my Mum found) a South African food shop in Milton Keynes, so when Sienne and Greg are back from South Africa I will haul them over there and demand that they tell me what to buy.

Those Nice & Spicy curry packs ROCK!! I just got back from a trip home to SA with a suitcase full of them... Nothing like a noseful of curry powder to discourage the customs dogs ;-)

Next time, for the authentic touch, you could try serving the bobotie with yellow rice - add a teasoon of turmeric to the rice water while you are boiling it, and toss in a handful of sultanas as well.

Man, I am so backward. Never encountered bobotje till the late 90s when a friend brought me to a South African restaurant. What is this Cape Malay curry powder you are hankering for? What does the bottle look like? Maybe I can find it here in Singers. If I do, I'll send one your way.
