So, after a long day of exploring the various sights and sounds of Gatlinburg, you might be wondering where to go to reward yourself for time well spent. If your belly is growling and your sweet tooth is calling, then you should definitely shift your focus to one of the city's many candy and sweets shops. These are especially nice locations for you to take your younger children to, and it will help them remember your family vacation for a long time to come. Also, the fact that many of the stores in the area feature homemade treats will ensure that you are getting an authentic taste of Gatlinburg!

To start your sweet shop excursion, you might try Aunt Mahalia's Candies, the oldest candy store in the area. For over fifty years (since 1939 to be exact) this location has been providing chocolate, taffy, fudge, various pecan-based candies, crunchy brittle, fruit jellies, and other assorted treats to its patrons. The Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen is another well-known and much-loved candy store of the city. Here you can get taffy, caramel apples, hand-dipped chocolate, and more made right before your eyes! This will definitely be a sight to remember for you and your family.

Looking for a specific kind of treat? Then you should turn to one of Gatlinburg's specialty sweet shops. If fudge is your sweet tooth's weakness of choice, then it is definitely recommended to check The Fudgery. This location revolutionized the fudge-making process back in 1980, and the Gatlinburg store is ready to treat you with the fruits of the shop's labor. If you're a popcorn fan, then how about exploring the Karmelkorn Shoppe for a wide variety of gourmet popcorn types?

Whether you're enjoying one of these fine treats yourself or just looking for something your children will love, let one of Gatlinburg's fine candy shops be your one-stop shop for pleasure. After all, part of the fun of a vacation is treating yourself, right? These shops can certainly help you achieve that goal!

Cabin Description

In the vacation or travel industry, all owners understand the same terms. Sometimes, through no fault of their own, guests get lost in the vacation cabin rental lingo. And in all fairness, there can be reasonable confusion between private and secluded, or wooded view and mountain view, and maybe even maybe Jacuzzi Tub and Hot Tub. This can be especially true for the Gatlinburg TN industry.

The reason for some many terms is to help distinguish between so many different cabins. If a rental company manages 100 properties it can be very difficult to separate cabins for marketing purposes. Thus, the advent of many separate terms.

These terms can be somewhat tricky from company to company depending on their definitions. So at all cost, remember question are your friend. As for Cabins For You, the definitions for a few terms are going to be listed below.

Private vs Secluded - No, not all cabins can easily fall into either of these categories. Obviously, if a cabin is in a resort it is not going to be either. With that said, we label cabins "private" because guests should feel comfortable on the decks of cabins. This does not mean that cabins are not next door or around, this just means that the owner might have added a few extras to insure privacy. This can be done easily through landscaping or lattice walls. "Secluded" cabins can attain this label because of a few things. From the deck you will not be able to see other cabins, the cabin is not physically near any cabins, or both. Very few cabins will fall totally within in the "secluded" category.

Wooded View or Mountain View - "Mountain view" cabins are typically cabins that have unobstructed, long range mountain views. This does not mean that "wooded view" cabins have no mountain view. Rather, it might be obstructed by trees/shubbery or only visible during winter months.

Internet vs Wireless - All wireless connections are internet connections, but not all internet connections are wireless. For a cabin to be wireless, it must state specifically that it is wireless.

Jacuzzi Tub vs Hot Tub - For the most part, hot tubs are located outside on the deck and Jacuzzi Tubs are in the cabin. A popular place for Jacuzzi Tubs is the master bedrooms. All hot tubs are outside unless specifically stated on the cabin page.

Dog Friendly Ideas

The "pet friendly" industry has greatly increased across Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Tennessee. This is partly because cabin owners are trying to monetize their income but it is mainly because dog owners are demanding the option to bring their pets. With the increase of furry visitors comes the increase of activities that allow pets.

With that said, most dog owners are not aware of dog friendly activities in Gatlinburg TN. Listed below are several activities in Gatlinburg that are dog friendly.

Downtown Gatlinburg - Almost everyone who visits Gatlinburg makes one or two trips to the Parkway to enjoy strolling along the sidewalks and window shopping. Most individuals are probably aware of this, but dogs are allowed to enjoy this activity with their owners. Some stores might let dogs inside, but most probably don't allow dogs. However, they can still enjoy some nice fresh air and a walk on the Parkway.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park - Despite the 800 miles of hiking trails in the National Park, dogs are only allowed on two trails. The first trail is the Gatlinburg Trail. The Gatlinburg Trail starts at the edge of town and follows to the Sugarland Visitor Center. This trail follows a stream which creates a great playground for dogs who love the water. The next trail is the Oconaluftee River Trail. This trail goes from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center to just outside of Cherokee NC. Please keep in mind that your dog must be on a lease and well behaved. Also, make sure you clean up after them.

Gatlinburg Sky Lift - I have never experienced this and not sure how it would work out if I did, but I hear that the Gatlinburg Sky Lift offers dogs a ride to the top of the mountain with their owners.

Like anything else you do with your pets, please follow all rules and regulations regarding pets. Observe leash laws and clean up after your furry buddies.

Advice About Damage Fees

Anyone who has had the pleasure (not so much) of paying damage fees might have appreciated this article before they went on vacation. In a continuing effort to make our guests vacations more relaxing, we have decided to explain damage fees and how to avoid them.

In short, damage fees cover the cost of items broken during a renter's stay. In an ideal world, business would love to cover costs regarding damages, but it hardly ever happens. Damage fees can occur for several different reasons. Normal things include broken lamps, hot tubs, beds, TV's, or excessive trash.

On a more positive note, the overwhelming majority of visitors have no issues relating to damages. The damages policy is in place to help protect the items and belongings of cabin rental owners.

There are a few things individuals can do to help avoid damages. In no particular order...

Inspections - Upon arriving at the cabin rental, take a few minutes to inspect the cabin. Look for things out of the ordinary or that might need to be fixed. This take just a few moments and can eliminate the possiblity of you being charged for something you did not break.

Don't Take Anything - Regardless of how much you might like something in your cabin rental, you can't take it home with you. If you do, you will be charged.

Pet Friendly Cabins - If you are a pet enthusiasts reserve a cabin that is pet friendly. Yes, you might have to look longer and pay a little more but it is worth it.

Ask For Help - If you think something is broken and needs repair, please call the management company. They have individuals on staff for these type problems. Do not attempt to fix something because you might actually break it. Also, if you are unfamiliar with how something works ask the management company for advice.

Be Honest - This is an easy one.

Be Aware Of Breakables - If children are present, be aware of breakables that are close to the ground. Try, within reason, to move breakables out of reach of children.

Lastly, Treat The Cabin Like It's Yours - This might be the easiest way to make sure the property stays in tip top condition.

Following just a few easy tips can help save time and money. You have scheduled dine out nights, planned chore charts (handles all cleaning activities), and attractions lists? Surprisingly, I bet there is a "free time" chart.

I don't know about you, but aren't vacations supposed to be relaxing? What good is a vacation if you are more stressed when you arrived home than when you left? How many people take a day off of work after your vacation is over? That is a vacation day to recoup from your vacation. How do you even explain that to your boss?

What about this? Has anyone ever thought about making the cabin rental the attraction? You put all your effort into finding that perfect Gatlinburg cabin so you can achieve true relaxation. You find the perfect deck, largest TV, and plenty of game tables to enjoy at the cabin.

Imagine the fun of sleeping late and going to bed early, watching movies on the big screen, playing games with friends, watching the sunset from the deck, enjoying the Smoky Mountain atmosphere, and most of all....relaxing! That is a vacation to me. Plus, you can save a lot of money.

The above statements are just trying to prove a point. I do know that some attractions are fun and exciting. In fact, you should enjoy some of them. I just think we have forgotten the point of a vacation. Remember, spending time with your family should your first priority. Enjoy the attractions, but don't forget the point of your vacation....relaxing.

Beautiful Foliage in Gatlinburg

Fall is here. So, when making your way through the streets and pathways of the various towns of the Smoky Mountains, you might be wondering where to engage in the sorts of shopping that spark your fancy. In this article, we'll focus specifically on sites that specialize in a hobby that evokes memories and reflections on the past, much like the Smoky Mountains themselves. I'm speaking, of course, about the pastime of antiquing.

One antique shop of note is The Common Good in Sevierville, Tennessee. This location sports vintage and antique furniture, accessories, and, to top it all off, handmade arts and crafts from local artists! To add to the excitement of this location, all the rooms in the store have themes based around what items you will find within them. So, you can expect to find your antique kitchen items in the kitchen room, and your bath accessories in the bathroom. This is an apt gimmick, as the store itself is based out of an old house.

And let's not forget the one-stop shop that is the flea market. The Great Smokies Flea Market and Antiques could very well be your next full-time hangout spot, and is located conveniently close to Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. Clocks, jewelery, figurines, furniture – you name it, and you're likely to find it at this mammoth location, which is hailed as one of East Tennessee's top attractions.

These are just two of the many, many antique stores that can be found around the Smoky Mountain region. Other locations of note include Morton's Antiques and Coins in Gatlinburg, as well as Heartland Antiques and Collectibles, Action Antique Mall, and Tudor House in Sevierville. With all of these choice spots just waiting to be combed by inquiring customers, you can be assured that if antiquing is an interest of yours or anyone in your family's, then the Smokies are bound to be that much more riveting!

Winter Safety Tips for Gatlinburg

Anyone acquainted with the weather patterns of the South knows how erratic they can be. The weather in Gatlinburg can sometimes get just as crazy as other parts of the South, so there are definitely some facts that need to be known about the region’s weather in order to better enjoy its sites and environment. As fall slowly fades and winter starts to shows its ugly head (and inconsistent), all Gatlinburg visitors should be aware of a few things.

In particular, winter is one time of the year when knowing what you’re getting yourself into while vacationing in Gatlinburg can be especially helpful. Highs in winter time usually tend towards the high 40s, but can occasionally creep their way into the upper 50s during December and February. Monthly lows have been noted to consistently fall into the low 20s.

When most people think about winter in the mountains, heavy snowfall is probably one of the first things that come to mind. While the lower regions of Gatlinburg can sometimes defy this trend, the issue of how to deal with heavy snow still holds mostly true for the areas of higher elevation. If you’re planning to visit or stay at a location in these upper parts (which includes many Gatlinburg cabins--ours and other companies), you should plan accordingly for snowfall, ice, and the like. Considering the mountainous quality of the terrain, tire chains are often a must in order to navigate many of the roads around the area. Dressing in layers is also recommended for anyone visiting Gatlinburg in the winter time. Winter weather can sometimes cause traffic delays on major roads such as Highway 441, so when making a wintertime trek up to the Smoky Mountains utilizing alternate routes is often advisable.

If the weather conditions appear dangerous, consider calling someone who might be able to help. Some options include the Tennessee DOT and your cabin management company.

Also, when looking at Gatlinburg cabins to rent for your stay, never underestimate the power of a large fireplace! This way you’ll be able to beat the winter weather even when staying indoors. Ultimately, the many activities and special events that occur in Gatlinburg during wintertime make it an exciting place to visit, so preparing properly for the winter weather can help you balance safety with pleasure.

Vintage Films in Gatlinburg TN

Gatlinburg TN is known for its originality with events that always seem to make a big impression in the small Smoky Mountain town. If you would like these images to be forever stuck in your mind as well, then it’s necessary that you take in the sights of Gatlinburg for yourself. Here are some prime sights at which to do just that.

First, there is the Gatlinburg Space Needle. This 342-foot high tower features a glass elevator that will take you all the way to the top. Once there, you’ll be exposed to an impressive 360-degree panoramic view of the Smoky Mountains. While the Space Needle also offers many indoor activities, the view from the top is certainly the biggest draw of this location.

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is also a must-see for anyone who desires to absorb the nature of Gatlinburg. The Park contains breathtaking viewpoints and 800 miles of trails that allow visitors to delve into the heart of the region. It also hosts 100 native tree species, more than in the whole of northern Europe. This ensures that experiencing the Park will be a wholly unique experience. The park plays host to

Another way to see the impressive natural beauty of the city is to take a ride on the Gatlinburg Sky Lift, which is hailed as the number one scenic overlook in the city. This slow, relaxing lift will take you above Gatlinburg and give you a gorgeous view of the mountains. This site has become a rite of passage of sorts for anyone seeking to experience the area in a new way.

Lastly, reserving one of our Gatlinburg cabins is a great way to immerse yourself in the beauty of the region. Many cabins are conveniently placed in locations with stunning views of downtown Gatlinburg and Mt Leconte. Don’t deny yourself the chance to get up-close-and-personal with the sites and sounds of the Smoky Mountains!

Celebrate Freedom in Pigeon Forge

In the United States, one of the biggest and most treasured of all values is the freedom we citizens experience on a regular basis. However, this freedom certainly does not come without a price. In order to retain rights to free speech and the like, millions of men and women must risk their lives overseas and on the shores of the nation itself. In light of this fact, the city of Pigeon Forge (a city sometimes known as the “All-American Getaway”) is showing its gratitude in a unique way to those who have fought for the USA by dedicating the whole of the month of August to these soldiers. This event is being called simply “Celebrate Freedom!”

In honor of this annual event and the people it recognizes, many local businesses will be offering discounts to both military veterans and active personnel. Law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, and fire fighters are also eligible for these savings. Brochures concerning these Celebrate Freedom discount packages are available at the Pigeon Forge Welcome Center. The discounts will apply to specified attractions, theaters, lodging, and restaurants throughout the city. All that is required of those who qualify is to possess their military service card.

Visitors of both military and none-military backgrounds are also encouraged to visit Patriot Park on Old Mill Avenue in downtown Pigeon Forge. This park is a firm testament to the dedication of those who serve to protect our country. It features a veteran's memorial to the many brave men and women of Sevier County who have been among the ranks of the US Military. The park, as well as the Celebrate Freedom event itself, are just two of the ways in which the city of Pigeon Forge shows its gratitude to the sacrifices made by these individuals, but they are both definitely two of the most exciting ways! You and your family should certainly are encouraged to join the festivities which help give back to the individuals celebrated by this unique event.

Hayrides in Gatlinburg TN

Can you believe it is that time of year again? There are a wide variety of paths that vary in their level of challenge, making this an activity that both new and experienced hikers can enjoy when visiting the area. However, no matter what trail you decide to set foot on, you should never set forth unprepared, as prior planning is necessary in order to get the most out of your hiking experience. So what then are the essentials to bring on any good hiking trip in Gatlinburg TN?

Considering the higher elevations of the Smoky Mountains region, dressing in layers is important in order to prepare for the weather. However, you don’t want to weigh yourself down with too many clothes, so maybe just limit your layers to a lightweight jacket or coat with a hood. Scarves and gloves can also help guard against any chilly winds you may face. Sunscreen is also important, seeing as how many of the mountain trails put you in close exposure to the sun.

As far as what to bring in your backpack, a first aid kit is absolutely essential. If you don’t feel like going out and buying a pre-made one, you can always just pack the necessities – band-aids, antibacterial soap, bug repellant, etc. A pocket knife is also not a bad idea, as it provides many tools that are appropriate for a wide variety of situations. Also, don’t forget to pack snacks and water. Hydration in particular is very important, so you’ll want a water bottle that can fit nicely into your backpack. As far as the food goes, lightweight snacks such as raisins or granola are typically the way to go.

Even with all these precautions taken into account, don’t forget the most important aspect of hiking – namely, that it is supposed to be fun! Bring along your camera to capture images of the breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains, as well as the animal and plant life. Journaling can also be a good way to set down the memories of your hiking trip. Use these tips to help make your excursion into nature safe, exciting, and memorable!

Of all seasons in Gatlinburg, Fall seems to be the best time to go on a hiking trip. Fall foliage is defiantly something you need to see. It is one of the busiest month so plan earlier in reserving on of our Gatlinburg cabins.

Documentary Preview in Gatlinburg

One of the Gatlinburgs’ biggest draws is the beauty of the nature that surrounds the area. This majesty is captured in all its glory within one of the area’s main attractions – the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. With the connection the Smokies possess to the concept of the National Park, it is obvious that they should have a hand in celebrating these Parks as a staple of the American landscape. However, along with this landscape comes another, sometimes unwanted feature – the prevalence of wildlife in the area. Animals are able to run free in Gatlinburg woods and parks, so you should definitely keep this in mind when planning your trip to the area. This is especially true when bringing small children along with you to join in the outdoor fun. Arming yourself with the knowledge of how to approach and deal with the potentially dangerous wildlife of the region (which consists of black bears, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and wolves) will certainly help in the long and the short term.

Please keep in mind that most Gatlinburg cabins in the area are within close proximity of the National Park and/or some river and streams. Planning for certain situations can be very resourceful.

First and foremost, you should always obey the famous adage “Don’t feed the animals!” Feeding animals, especially their young, can put you and your family in definite danger. Approaching an animal that is in the process of feeding its young is also particularly dangerous. In fact, being in close proximity to any of the wildlife in the area can be potentially hazardous. You should thus always be careful when attempting to capture these creatures on film.

The main thing to keep in mind when approached by these animals is to stay calm and be prepared. This is especially true when enjoying the lush nature trails that Gatlinburg offers. Ensure that your children know that the creatures of the area are not the same as family pets. You can also instill in your children and family some helpful tips, such as:

Remain upright in order to appear larger (and therefore more intimidating) to the animal

Give the animal space. This creates a larger window for them to get away from you.

Make no sudden movement. Backing away slowly and quietly is still the best way to make your escape.

Being mindful of the presence of these animals and the techniques to approach them can put you one step in the right direction to keeping you and your family safe. While the wildlife of Gatlinburg is certainly beautiful, you should always remember that you are vacationing in their natural habitat. Because of this, appropriate respect for them is always in order.

Breakfast in Gatlinburg TN

Let's start with an obvious observation – traveling is hard work. Planning a mountain cabin getaway can often be as exhausting as the daily tasks you're attempting to leave behind. Enjoying that same getaway can often leave you a bit fatigued as well. However, the day you have ahead of you can be at loss less trying if you prepare yourself with a hearty breakfast. When staying in Gatlinburg on your vacation, you may be at a loss as to where to take your hungry belly, not to mention your family's, to get some good morning grub. Here, then, is some breakfast advice for your Gatlinburg vacation.

In the Smokies, the name of the breakfast game is summed up in one word – pancakes. In Gatlinburg, you will find some of the most delicious pancakes you have ever experienced. There is also a wide selection of pancake houses around Gatlinburg for you to choose from. You might try the Pancake Pantry, which is a renowned breakfast spot located on Gatlinburg's main strip, the Parkway. There is also the Log Cabin Pancake House, a location that speaks to the heart of the region by serving breakfast in a log cabin environment. You should also keep in mind that, despite their namesakes, the many pancake-themed breakfast spots around Gatlinburg also feature other types of breakfast fare. You can thus expect to be met with delicious French toast and crepes, eggs cooked to your liking, and juicy strips of bacon.

Aside from the famous pancakes, you may be searching for restaurants that feature other staples of southern breakfasts, such as grits, and biscuits with gravy. While many of the pancake houses will feature these, you might turn your attention to locations such as the Terrace Restaurant, which sports a breakfast buffet featuring country ham, grits, and the like. There is also the Atrium Restaurant, a mom and pop eatery that serves delicious mountain cuisine, with Belgian waffles, country fried steaks, and other scrumptious entrees topping the breakfast menu. With so many different breakfast locations for you to try out, Gatlinburg TN ensures that, as far as your mornings are concerned, you'll never have an excuse to go hungry again!

Where To View Wildlife This Summer

Given the nature of its surroundings, it is to be expected that Gatlinburg TN is home to a variety of animal life. Perhaps the most famous creature that calls this area home is the black bear, a species that has in many ways become an unofficial “mascot” of the region. Because of this, visitors may be curious as to where the most likely places are to encounter these animals, as well as other animals, in safe, controlled environments. And while proper safety should always be observed when approaching the wildlife of the area, there are a few spots, both controlled and open, around the city where bear and other animals can be encountered.

One controlled environment where visitors can meet some of the local wildlife is the Smoky Mountain Wildlife Encounter, a feature within the Ober Gatlinburg amusement park (We offer many Gatlinburg cabins located near Ober Gatlinburg on Ski Mountain). Here you can have face-to-face encounters with bears, flying squirrels, raccoons, owl, turtles, snakes, fish, tree lizards, and many more. The park also features an underwater viewing area where visitors can watch river otters playing, as well as a “nocturnal house” which plays host to the creatures who prefer the nightlife.

To see animals in a more open environment, you might try visiting Cade’s Cove. This valley is a famous Gatlinburg attraction, and consists of an 11-mile-one-way loop that takes visitors along a path full of historic sites that hold lots of meaning for the history of the area. The wildlife in this area is particularly plentiful, and you’re sure to encounter at least deer on your journey. You always may come into contact with black bears, bobcats, foxes, coyotes, red wolves, beavers, raccoons, and more. Obviously, many of these animals are not to be approached directly, so you should definitely be attentive when exploring the area. Never get too close to or attempt to feed any of these creatures. This will ensure that you can experience their majesty while still remaining safe.

Gatlinburg offers a plethora of wildlife for visitors to encounter. Whether in a controlled or open environment, coming into contact with these creatures is sure to leave you with fond memories of your Gatlinburg vacation. Just be sure to always show appropriate behavior and respect towards animals and their surroundings.

Summer Tips from Cabins For You

With summer in full swing and the "dog days" rapidly approaching us, Cabins For You would like to offer a few tips to help "cool off" your Gatlinburg vacation. Here are a few summer tips...

Wild Bear Falls - What...Gatlinburg TN has a water park? Yes they do! We have covered it before but we believe it is worth mentioning again. This is a great idea for families during the hot days of July and August. Single Day admission is $18.95. Wild Bear Falls will definitely entertain your family and go a longway to help cooling you off.

Swimming anyone? - So overlooked when coming to Gatlinburg TN. What a great amenity for any family when reserving a cabin in Gatlinburg. There are so many mountain cabins that offer pool access. Some even offer private pools. Technically this is not free but it feels like it because it is added into the reservation cost.

Learn To Love The Evening - It is so much fun to stroll the strip in downtown Gatlinburg TN. It is even more fun to do it at night. Still very crowded but at least you don't sweat like crazy. Oh yeah...does not cost a thing.
