They spent two nights and three days at Msalto Seminary College Campus just outside of Dodoma. The camp was a combined group from the church for the first time. Attending the camp were Lahash kids 10 and up, Compassion kids, and a handful of church youth attended the camp together as members of Iringa Road Mennonite Church. Because of the combined groups, most of the church staff was present making it an event for the whole church.</div><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Niz_TTxio9W42fncYlOZEA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SlTHV2fatZI/AAAAAAAAD8U/AkVCmkQWQNY/s400/From%20Leah%20026.jpg" /></a><div>The theme of the camp was <i>Let the Glory of God be Revealed</i>. We explored this theme throughout the week through classes, praise, worship and even games. The seminars during the three days covered trauma healing, counselling, HIV/AIDS, youth growth and development, and Biblical devotionals. It seemed really exciting for the kids to have an experience away from home with their peers and to learn in a different environment. While being well fed with three meals a day, they were also fed emotionally and spiritually with meaningful messages and information to apply to their lives. Throughout the week the spirits were high and the dancing was lively! </div><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Kh97SBTBElCtz4o3MTSx4A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SlTHSUqvjgI/AAAAAAAAD8I/QxuHmQ0o2E8/s400/From%20Leah%20010.jpg" /></a><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2nLp75MUXoFyKUBPN29WBA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SlTHUm_XYlI/AAAAAAAAD8Q/t0QC-ze4lSw/s400/From%20Leah%20018.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lahash/DodomaIn2009?feat=embedwebsite">Dodoma in 2009</a></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/17342605-2962270543847925835?l=lahash.blogspot.com'/></div>Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12732337267428926296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17342605.post-57714114743271555812009-07-06T11:01:00.000-07:002009-07-06T11:11:27.863-07:00Lahash featured in Relevant Magazine!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.relevantmagazine.com/magazine/current-issue"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 332px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SlI8paIF5YI/AAAAAAAAD5o/uh2tkU_o_IQ/s400/Picture+15.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5355409588982506882" /></a>The newest issue of <a href="http://www.relevantmagazine.com/magazine/current-issue">Relevant Magazine</a> features a profile of our organization and links to get connected with us! We are so excited about the possibilities of this new home! We will be moving in on August 7th, after completing a serious interior makeover. The home will then be used for the following:<div><div><ul><li>Portland offices</li><li>Hospitality space to house interns, staff, advocates, &amp; East African partners</li><li>A central space to connect with community members and invite people from Portland to get to know our team better</li><li>Also - a space to store supplies we will be shipping to Africa, and a space to use for our online store.</li></ul></div><div>Our operations here in Portland will finally have some room to stretch! Thanks to all of you who've been praying with us for this next stage.</div><div><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/1rrlOFeWKVmzxHBPCRWoDw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/Skjmi9KITtI/AAAAAAAAD1k/5oPOhAxH6Z0/s400/DSC09035.JPG" /></a></div><div>We will need to raise $5,000 for the renovation process. As you can see in the photos above, there is some significant damage and wear-and-tear on the home. We need to replace locks, windows, and install lights. We also are cleaning, sanding, priming, and painting. Would you be willing to help with this project? Our partners in Tanzania eagerly adopted the press, and recently had an additional training seminar to get the business in motion. Our volunteer Emily in Tanzania just wrote this update:</i><div><br /></div><div>=================================</div><div><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/jW0rASMeiPNkFA5IzkXvAw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SkQCIhLrLyI/AAAAAAAADsI/JuFMH68lRlE/s144/DSC08769.JPG" /></a> From Emily Deichsel (<a href="http://emilydeichsel.blogspot.com/">see her blog here</a>)</div><div><br /></div><div><div>The briquette training was completed the first week I arrived in Dodoma. The first three days were spent learning the process of making the briquettes.</div><div><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SkQBqAntvZI/AAAAAAAADsE/BB4QnriWklo/s400/p1060145.jpg" /></div><div>First they learned the proper preparation of the materials, then using the press to make the briquettes and finally drying and cooking with them. There were demonstrations, seminars and lots of hands-on practice. Then there were two days of seminars covering the preparation of the materials, press of the briquettes and then also about business and marketing of the product. The last day they went to town to begin marketing the product. The idea was to let people know about the briquettes as a new product just to get the idea out there and see what customers might be interested. They went to places that cook for a large number of people like restaurants and hotels and talked to the cooks. They had samples to give prospective customers that were interested.</div><div><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SkP97B3FcYI/AAAAAAAADr0/Pl4FBVYRngM/s400/Briquetts%20%281%29.jpg" /></div><div>Friday they ended with a closing ceremony giving certificates of completion of the training. Now two weeks later a group of the youth are at the church making briquettes.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is loud music playing and they have a pretty good system worked out. I think they have orders lined up of people wanting to try to cook with the briquettes.</div><div><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SkP987oG0AI/AAAAAAAADsA/taNPlPB2pCg/s400/p10601561.jpg" /></div></div><div><br /></div><div><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lahash/TZFuelBriquettes?feat=embedwebsite">TZ Fuel Briquettes!</a></td></tr></tbody></table><br /></div><div>For more from Emily on her service with Grace &amp; Healing Ministry - <a href="http://emilydeichsel.blogspot.com/">check out her blog here</a>. This is in memory of the black children killed in Soweto, South Africa in 1976 while protesting over the poor quality of Education offered by the Apartheid regime. The African Union decides on the theme of each year. This year’s theme is, “Africa Fit for Children: Call for Accelerated Action towards their Survival”.<br />This theme is based on a declaration made by African heads of state in 2001 on what needs to be done to make the continent fit for her children. They agreed on priority areas as: Enhancing life chances; overcoming HIV/AIDS; realizing the right to education; realizing the right to protection including legal, and protection against violence, abuse and exploitation; and participation of youth and children. As a follow up to the declaration the leaders in 2008 met and made a call for accelerated action to make the Africa Fit for Child a reality. <br />Most of the schools today, came together to celebrate this day. Each school has a chance to present. Below is Tenderfeet school presenting a song and a poem.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SjethS2rBPI/AAAAAAAAAd4/55a0P5H7h4U/s1600-h/ANGOTEDU+2009-+DAY+OF+AFRICAN+CHILD+048.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SjethS2rBPI/AAAAAAAAAd4/55a0P5H7h4U/s320/ANGOTEDU+2009-+DAY+OF+AFRICAN+CHILD+048.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347933870034191602" /></a><br />During the celebration there was a lot of fun for the children to enjoy<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SjevAGfU_nI/AAAAAAAAAeA/HxJajCBhn78/s1600-h/ANGOTEDU+2009-+DAY+OF+AFRICAN+CHILD+037.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SjevAGfU_nI/AAAAAAAAAeA/HxJajCBhn78/s320/ANGOTEDU+2009-+DAY+OF+AFRICAN+CHILD+037.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347935498802626162" /></a><br />This two beautiful faces are Emaculate and Shally who are sisters and they attend the Tenderfeet School. Steve, Christine and I will head back to Kampala. Eric, the Amazing grace advocate will remain for the next one week before he heads back home. We have had great time with the Children here. They always sing the best and you can see the love of God on thier faces and the big smile they always have. This evening Steve encouraged the children and you could see how keen they were. ofcourse they are sad that we are leaving but they are always happy that we are there for them. They always ask anyone that visits them to pray for them when they go back to thier homes.<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/ShBk6lKYezI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/C0yn56nXOwo/s1600-h/ewd+048.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/ShBk6lKYezI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/C0yn56nXOwo/s320/ewd+048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336876516004887346" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/17342605-1038838178901007515?l=lahash.blogspot.com'/></div>angotehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16267891869406555922noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17342605.post-31010286097194767392009-05-15T10:25:00.000-07:002009-05-15T11:27:22.780-07:00Our Time In SudanGetting stuck on your way to the north is kind of a usual trend. The other day when we were travelling, we got stuck and we had to be pulled out by this monster. We are kind of used to this. The good news is that the roads are being constructed and this will make it easy for people to travel North of Uganda. <br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2mlDTUOmI/AAAAAAAAAcw/uhY7UeVwMzk/s1600-h/008.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2mlDTUOmI/AAAAAAAAAcw/uhY7UeVwMzk/s320/008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336104288975600226" /></a><br />The other good news is that the roads in Sudan are way much better than they were before. From the Sudaneese Border to as far as Mogiri, this is how the road looks like.<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2w-YY2JPI/AAAAAAAAAdI/dwtd5SSwEf8/s1600-h/j+070.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2w-YY2JPI/AAAAAAAAAdI/dwtd5SSwEf8/s320/j+070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336115719248946418" /></a><br />There are alot of development in Sudan, we only need to fast and pray that it will not be destroyed again especially during the referendum in 2011.<br />We had a wonderful time with the kids and the staff in Sudan.<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2qMzr94NI/AAAAAAAAAc4/STgohTevITk/s1600-h/j+053.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2qMzr94NI/AAAAAAAAAc4/STgohTevITk/s320/j+053.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336108270513676498" /></a><br />Also during our time in sudan we bought some food, Soap, cooking oil and salt for the people living with leprosy which will be distributed to them soon. This is one of the group that is negleceted by the government.Over $2000 was donated for the food.<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2wFfZYYgI/AAAAAAAAAdA/Jhxa8jMlwD0/s1600-h/edwin+6+011.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/Sg2wFfZYYgI/AAAAAAAAAdA/Jhxa8jMlwD0/s320/edwin+6+011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336114741877694978" /></a><br />We are now at Amazing grace orphanage in Uganda. I grew up in Washington, so it's always nice to be up there and get some fresh air. <div><br /></div><div>We had a big gathering of 17 of us during the course of the weekend. The main point of this retreat was to analyze the past couple years of work and plan for the upcoming years. We are grateful to God for the team members who have been joining us recently.</div><div><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/PdgNmc3iomC4RrJnQkpvng?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SfnBwwgGDRI/AAAAAAAADLQ/YvtlFEnC2Sc/s400/DSC08290.JPG" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sPpYEnb0QRlMsPqIoOi1TQ?feat=embedwebsite"></a></div><div><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sPpYEnb0QRlMsPqIoOi1TQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SfnBzJkuxWI/AAAAAAAADLg/lUhd9uOcDck/s400/DSC08301.JPG" /></a><table style="width:auto;"><tbody><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/lrSodeFsQBK5vUJ6AN9dUw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_DM0wFqllCDo/SfnB0dGz1rI/AAAAAAAADLo/8lJ0CZEn5pc/s400/DSC08312.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lahash/Spring2009Retreat?feat=embedwebsite">Spring 2009 Retreat</a></td></tr></tbody></table></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/17342605-57859085817223819?l=lahash.blogspot.com'/></div>Danhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12732337267428926296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17342605.post-53625309082002963442009-04-27T09:24:00.000-07:002009-04-27T09:54:09.995-07:00ENVIRONMENTALOne of the Lahash Holistic Development Model is to Ensure that life in the environment is healthy, sustainable, and that the community is being good caretakers of the air, land, and water. Today we were able to put that in great action at the new Tenderfeet Land headed by Cheryl from Canada. The truck below is carrying a bunch of different species of trees that we purchased.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SfXgjIY5rGI/AAAAAAAAAbk/0bO5gKH9T5A/s1600-h/eegrgrgr+001.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SfXgjIY5rGI/AAAAAAAAAbk/0bO5gKH9T5A/s400/eegrgrgr+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329412628214819938" /></a><br />Gitonga a father of some of the children that Margaret is taking care off also joined the team in planting. On the picture below is a hole being dug for an umbrella tree which will give a very nice shed to the children during hot seasons. Some fruit trees were also planted. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SfXhsVelqnI/AAAAAAAAAbs/FmIeAON6gmQ/s1600-h/eegrgrgr+002.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CzdRR0rE2tM/SfXhsVelqnI/AAAAAAAAAbs/FmIeAON6gmQ/s400/eegrgrgr+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329413885858785906" /></a><br />Below is a picture of a live fence that we planted today.
