When your plumbing springs a leak, you don't always need to call a plumber. Especially if you have PVC water pipes, the steps to fix a leak are not that difficult. Fix PVC water pipes yourself when you have a simple leak. Cut the water off at the main supply to your house. This relieves pressure on the lines and keeps water from spraying all over you when you start to work. Use a hacksaw or a ratchet PVC cutter to cut the leaky section of pipe out. A ratchet PVC cutter makes this job easy. You can buy one at your local home improvement store. It looks like a pair of pliers with a hook on one end and a blade on the other. It makes for an extra-smooth cut. Clean your PVC pipe ends on each end of the cut out section and also clean your new piece of PVC pipe and couplings. When you fix PVC water pipes, use PVC pipe cleaner. This helps bond the glue to the fittings. You can buy PVC cleaner at your local home improvement store. From black steel to blue brute underground piping, you name it and I've installed it at one time or another around the Los Angeles area. While you may think if you have seen one type of pipe then you have seen them all, think again. The wrong pipe installed in the wrong location can spell financial and structural disaster in just a few short months. Black Steel - the standby for sprinkler and gas lines. This type of pipe is available in varying wall thickness, called "schedule". The standard thickness for black steel pipe is schedule 40, which is more than enough steel to allow for machine threading. Black Steel piping can never be used for water supply lines; it is used primarily for gas lines and for automatic fire protection systems.

In recent years, the high cost of steel has spawned a thinner schedule pipe that is less expensive to manufacture but still allows for machine threading. The fountain itself has minimal maintenance requirements but it does still need some attention once in a while. If you're having trouble with your water fountain perhaps some of these tips will help. Be sure the fountain pump is strong enough for the water flow needs. Smaller indoor fountains need less water pressure than large outdoor fountains. Most fountains come with the right pump when you by them, but if you ever need to replace the pump you want to be sure the gallons per hour (GPH) rating is right for your needs. The easiest thing is to get the same pump type as you had before, but if you've thrown that away, you can go by this basic range: indoor fountains up to 10" high need about 45-65 GPH, outdoor fountains need about 500 GPH for every 3 feet of fountain height.

If your fountain overflows when the pump is off this means you have too much water in there. As the pump is running there's water in the pump and the tubing, but when shut off that water will settle in the basin. If it overflows your overall water volume is too high. Be sure to have enough water to cover the entire pump, but keep it 3/4 to 1" lower than overall basin rim. After setting the correct volume then turn on the pump and check for noise. If the pump is slightly exposed while running add enough water to cover it. This will cut back the noise and should be low enough to prevent run over when the pump is off. Water fountains are beautiful decorative items that can add a new level to your decor, whether indoor or outdoor. If you take care of them properly they should serve you for a long time.
