Enjoy a cocktail at a museum

A warm summer evening is the perfect time to explore New York City’s largest private garden at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Every Friday through Aug. 14, when the museum closes, the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden opens for cocktails and tapas accompanied by music by jazz trio Ed Fuqua Group.

The cocktail event is free with museum admission, so come early and take some time to explore the United States' only museum devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design.

A classical experience in Central Park

High Line opens to the public

The High Line was once an integral part of New York's transportation system, then in 1980 the trains stopped running. Now the High Line open once again -- this time as a public park. Section 1 of the High Line (from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street) is now giving visitors the chance to preview the park, which is still under construction.

Built in the 1930s, the High Line was part of a massive public-private infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. In 1999, nearly 20 years after the last trains stopped running, Friend of the High Line formed to prevent the historic structure from being demolished. Thanks to their efforts the park is being completed, giving natives and visitors alike another green space to enjoy in the city.

BBQ in the Big Apple

Portable pool floats into the Bronx

The Floating Pool is back this summer -- this time in the Bronx -- and visitors are invited to cool off free at this unique aquatic attraction.

The seven-lane freshwater pool sits on a barge, creating a one-of-a-kind experience. Enjoy views of New York City's waterfront, do some laps or take your kids for the free swimming lessons.

Making beautiful music at Washington Square Park

New York City is a great place to enjoy a concert, and you don’t have to spend a fortune, or even a single penny, to experience some wonderful music.

On June 5 and June 19, the 51st annual Washington Square Music Festival will take place at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich Village, and, as always, the event is free. The concerts will feature music performed by musicians who regularly play in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Ballet orchestras and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

On June 5, the Festival Chamber Orchestra will perform Igor Stravinsky's Concerto for Piano and Winds with pianist David Oei and works by Ludwig van Beethoven and David Taylor. On June 19 the Festival Chamber Ensemble will perform Stravinsky's L'Histoire du soldat with Lutz Rath, Laila Maria Salins and David Taylor, actors, and works by Johannes Brahms & Franz Schubert with soprano Lucia Hyunju Song and pianist David Oei.

The ships roll in at Fleet Week

Chinese history comes to life in Soul of Shaolin

Fresh from their appearance at the Beijing Olympics, 33 highly skilled Shaolin Kung Fu artists from China are making their debut on Broadway in Soul of Shaolin.

Through Jan. 31, these talented performers, who were featured in such films as Fearless and Shaolin Soccer, will be on stage at the Marquis Theatre telling the story of a boy named Hui Guang who is separated from his mother by war, is raised by Shaolin monks and becomes a Shaolin Kung Fu master.
