PicMarkr - Free Watermark

PicMarkr is online tool that will add custom watermark (image or text) to your images. Usually image watermarking being used to protect your copyrights or add some descriptions to your pictures. You can see the image examples from my previous posts.

The steps for creating this watermark are easy:
1. Upload your photos
You can either import it from Flickr (you must have the account) or just upload it from your computer. You can upload 5 files and total file size less than 25MB. PicMarkr has the option to resize your uploaded pictures to 500 pixels, 800 pixels and 1024 pixels.

2. Set watermark to your images
PicMarkr has 3 options, Text watermark, Image watermark and Tiled watermark. It has the option for the presets and watermark align.

3. Save your images
After creating your watermark, you can upload the images back to Flickr or save it to your own computer.

That's it, with minimum settings and don't need to download or install everything, PicMarkr has help me to create watermark the easy way. And yes, it's FREE.

It’s time to leave Singapore and with a few hours left, I try to walk around the Changi Airport. And the GST refund makes me wonder. And the fact is tourists may claim for refund of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) paid on goods purchased from retailers participating in the Tourist Refund Scheme. There are eligibility criteria and conditions, but I only aware for a minimum $100 to claim this GST. In other words you can get your money back after $100 per transactions outside the Changi Airport. Not all the money, only the tax you had already paid! It’s fair enough right?

Lots of shop inside this airport. For the last minute shopping, it's more than enough. From foods, toys, chocolates and electronic gadgets.

This is my last night on Singapore. I visit Bugis Junction mall to have my meal there. The food court was crowded as always. Maybe the price is not that expensive and they provide more menu variations. There are Korean, Japanese, Western and even Nasi Padang! I pass for this one; I eat that a lot in Indonesia. So, I try my luck by choosing Nasi Curry just because I haven’t taste anything spicy for the last 3 days.

No more places to visit and I really don’t feel up to it. Must pack all my stuff and prepare all the things together. Just want to have a good sleep tonight.

Yes, it’s Orchard road at night, one of the “must visit” places in Singapore. And it’s shopping heaven for the ladies. I have to admit that the Singaporean has a good taste for fashion and style. As I walking through this crowded pedestrians, I wonder why every food courts are always full with people? Do the Singaporeans prefer this type of habit or they simply can’t cook? Sorry, no offence, it’s only a thought.

I also try the GPS maps using wireless internet when enjoying the walk. Very useful when you’re getting lost and don’t know where to go. At the end I just felt tired after walking all the way through the Orchard road. You will be amaze for the malls and plaza surrounds it. A few of them has banner for the Halloween party and promos to attract the visitors.

After finishing some tasks, I was invited to have a Japanese lunch on one of the food court in Liang Seah Street. The food taste good. But I began to realize that everything seems taste too sweet. Even the chili taste sweet!. I had to buy a good old hot chili souse with me.

At night I have the time to visit Fountain of Wealth in Suntec City. It has the setting for laser performances, as well as "live" song and laser message dedications between 8pm to 9pm. Visitors are invited to walk around a mini fountain at the centre of the fountain's base for good luck. But it was bad luck for me, because the show was temporarily closed for maintenance.

Before leaving Suntec City I went to Carrefour to grab some snacks. And something catches my attention. As you can see from the image (it’s not my cart, it’s one of the customer cart), the shopping cart must be inserted with 1$ coin. It makes me curious. But later from one of the Singaporean, I’m quite understand with the facts that lots of shopping cart had been stolen and to make the customers more organized when returning the cart. Of course you can get the 1$ back. It’s a bit odd because it’s free to use it in Indonesia.

Once again I revisited Singapore. But arrive in a wrong time. Its Diwali (or Deepavali) a major Hindu holiday, that’s mean a public holiday. Good for me, I can spend the whole day sightseeing Singapore. Next stop is VivoCity. It’s a random choice; actually I really don’t have any idea for the rest of the day.

From here I can continue this jolly time to the famous Sentosa Island. But I pass my chances. It’s public holiday and the queue is a long way to go. Maybe some other time. After that I enjoy my lunch at Hog's Breath Café. The steak is a bit expensive. But taste okay. After recharge the energy, I spend the rest of the day enjoying the life in VivoCity.

Although I had tried the MRT a few times, I still have to get used with maps and directions or using the MRT card. You will be concern for lots of warning signs, starting when you enter the station until you arrive in the platform. No smoking, no eating or drinking, no flammable materials. You will be fined! But on the other hand the train is always nice and clean.

From VivoCity I travel to Raffles City Shopping Mall using the MRT. You have to admit this transport is surely effective and very convenience. I enjoy another good meal at Thai Express. Although not quite spicy as in Indonesia, but it’s still nice to have a chance to try different sets of menu.

Email notifier for multiple email accounts

I'm very sure that all you guys out there were having more than one email accounts.
There are lots of free email services available and it might be weird to have only one email account on these days.

On the other side, it's really waste a lot of time to directly log in to every email account you have. And I had found three email notifiers to make life easier.

1. Gmail Notifier
The original notifier for Gmail. Supports checking multiple accounts as well as Gmail Hosted accounts. Allows you to monitor multiple Gmail accounts right inside your browser's UI.

2. Gmail Manager
Allows you to manage multiple Gmail accounts and receive new mail notifications. Displays your account details including unread messages, saved drafts, spam messages, labels with new mail, space used, and new mail snippets.

3. WebMail Notifier
WebMail Notifier checks your webmail accounts and notifies the number of unread emails.
You can use multiple accounts in a same host. Currently supports Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail/MSN/Live and many more.

I personally prefer WebMail Notifier, because it support different email service.

There is a good news for all the user of Telkomsel Flash that had been complaining about the speed and connections they're having right now.

Telkomsel Flash from their official homepage just added the tag line:

*Mohon maaf, pengajuan aktivasi paket Unlimited untuk sementara tidak dapat kami layani

That means Telkomsel Flash had stopped the registration for unlimited package temporarily

What is SSD ?

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data. Unlike flash-based memory cards, a SSD emulates a hard disk drive, thus easily replacing it in most applications. An SSD using SRAM or DRAM (instead of flash memory) is often called a RAM-drive. If you pay attention to the latest laptop storage configuration, there is a choice between using the hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SDD). For example take a look at the latest Asus Eee PC ,
Type Eee PC 1000 : SSD with 40GB capacity
Type Eee PC 1000H : HDD with 80GB capacity

Which one is better ?

SSD is not much difference to a flash drive. They store data on a non-mechanical device. That means no mechanical failures such as stop spinning like the hard disk drive being doing all this time. From this advantage will result :

* Faster speed (no moving parts)
* Consume less power usage (work great on laptop!)
* More reliable (not that fragile and sensitive material)

Great performances by the SSD are not yet followed by it's expensive price tag compared to the old hard disk drive. Maybe because only a few big manufacturers produce it. For the price comparison, a laptop with a SDD instead of a standard HDD costs about 50% or 60% more. And the biggest SDD available today is only 60 gigabytes.

Another disadvantages :
* Limited number of write cycles before they wear out
* Available capacity remains much lower than HDD
* Difficulty on data recovery (just like your flash drive when fails, it's done)

There are four different settings you can choose :

Speed up Firefox browser with FireTune

Instead of tweaking the firefox browser manually, you can try FireTune. FireTune is design to optimize the performance of the firefox browser according to your computer speed and internet connection speed.

This free application from TotalIdea Software does not make any changes to the firefox executables or any other internal file. And can be undone easily.

Next, how to tell whether Firefox is faster after optimizing it:

1. Clear the cache of Firefox from the Firefox settings dialog - this is very important!

From the Firefox menu options, choose Tools and then Clear Private Data
Uncheck all checkboxes except for the Cache checkbox.
Click on the Clear Private Data Now button.

2. Before you optimize Firefox, navigate to http://www.numion.com/stopwatch/ and does a speed test on http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

3. The time needed to load the site completely will be displayed to you in the browser window. Write down the time

4. Clear the cache of Firefox from the Firefox settings dialog again - this is very important!

5. Now, close Firefox, and optimize it with FireTune

6. Start Firefox again, and repeat the speed test on http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

7. Compare the displayed result with the result from the test before the optimization. Or you can repeat these steps for the average results.

There are ways to increase your browsing speed with firefox:

Tweak the browser

1. Start Firefox and type: about:config in the address bar
2. Type network.http.pipe in the Filter search bar on top
3. Double click on the network.http.pipelining string to change its value to TRUE.
If you use a proxy, set network.http.proxy.pipelining to TRUE as well.
4. Double click on the network.http.pipelining.maxrequests string to change its interger value to 35.
5. Right click anywhere on the Configuration screen and select "New" and then "Boolean".
6. Enter browser.turbo.enabled as the new Boolean name and click "Ok". Now set the value of the Boolean to TRUE

1. Disable Images
Firefox allows you to disable loading images automatically. To disable image in your Firefox browser, from the menu bar choose Tools-Options-Content and uncheck "Load images automatically".

2. Disable Stylesheets
Disabling stylesheets help to keep website load times down as well. From the file menu choose View-Page Style and select "No Style". It's important to note that websites will display differently with their stylesheets disabled, but in most cases the navigation will not be negatively affected.

HSDPA is High-Speed Downlink Packet Access, is a new protocol for mobile telephone data transmission. It is known as a 3.5G (G stands for generation) technology. It has the ability to receive large files to your mobile device such as email attachments, PowerPoint presentations or web pages.

HSUPA – High Speed Uplink Packet Access – this is a further enhancement to increase the speed by which you communicate from your mobile device – for example, this enables you to upload videos to YouTube in secs so that you can share the experience in real time.

UMTS is Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. UMTS is one of the emerging mobile phone technologies known as third-generation, or 3G. Third-generation systems are designed to include such traditional phone tasks as calls, voice mail, and paging, but also new technology tasks such as Internet access, video, and SMS, or text messaging.

How to select a good blog template

When selecting a new blog template, keep in mind the basics:

1. What kind of website you want to create? (business orientation, personal blog, forums, etc.)
2. Who will be your target visitors? (friends, students, adult, etc.)
3. What is the content of your website? (information, daily life, hobby, etc.)

From these points of view we developed to the next step by choosing the right layout:

** How many columns do you really need (for starter, just select two-column)
** Title, header, body and sidebar design
** Type of font
** Color patterns
** Easy to use navigation (site map, search feature)

I realize all this tips are not easy to implement. It's really hard and takes a lot of time and effort to finish. But not to worry, just keep changing and experimenting. You might end up learning something. Ask the visitors about your web design. Although you can not make everybody happy, at least you know what your visitors taste.
