The note read: "Mock me." As my colleagues will attest, I'm the first to do a coffee run and aim to be a congenial office mate. So let the jabs begin!<br /><br />In all seriousness, it wasn't that hard. What is it about <a href="http://www.financeanewcar.cn/">Las Vegas</a> that brings out the big hair and big jewelry? Or the nightclub ads that give Calvin Klein's a run for their money? It helps explain why the lifestyle magazine's mission, per its company president, is to "arm readers with all the ingredients necessary for their pursuit of Luxury, Access, <a href="http://www.fastpaydayadvance.cn/">Money</a> and Power." Wait till this guy finds out about the recession, will he be surprised!<br /><br />Then again, Sin City is billed as an escape from America. That means you can <a href="http://www.loansforpoliceofficers.com/">gamble</a> 24/7 while being served endless cocktails, then get married by an Elvis impersonator to a stripper you met 15 minutes earlier in a neon-lit chapel.<br /><br />Yes, I know all about the family-friendly efforts and the hotels that make the Sphinx look like a <a href="http://www.wheretosellcar.com/">hood ornament</a>, but when it comes to glitzy overkill, Las Vegas stands alone. (The Venetian's Tao Beach features a pool surrounded by 14-foot-high columns of fire, Xboxes, daybeds and a 30-foot bar.) Too often, luxury and money are used for <a href="http://consultant-directory.tradepub.com/?pt=cat&page=Retl">conspicuous consumption</a>. People, try emulating fashion icon Diana Vreeland, who said less jewelry made more of a statement. As for Power, there is the power to indulge your fantasies -- just ask your LV cabdriver -- and the power to jump-start sane health care. Given how most of us treat our bodies, it's probably a toss-up.<br /><br />Vegas, however, celebrates the body beautiful, which can mean full-time work in its namesake, according to the "model couple" profiled in the "Voyeur" section, which is top-heavy with local talent -- from Michael Curry, a master puppeteer, to poker champ Phil Hellmuth. Laura Diane and Jay Rebholz run a modeling agency that provides DJs, go-go dancers, <a href="http://www.car-covers.biz/">valet parkers</a> and golf caddies. Posed among mannequins and scattered limbs, a la "Dexter," Jay is draped in black, apparently fulfilling George Costanza's dream to be "ensconced in velvet," while Laura is sporting a hot pink teddy, her hands perched possessively on Jay's thigh.<br /><br />Laura, 28, was once a pussycat doll at Pure, a local hotspot, but admitted, "My knees started hurting." I feel your pain! Ask anyone who spends hours at work in front of a <a href="http://www.wheretosellequipment.com/">computer</a>, moving only to order lunch. The joints are the first thing to go; idealism is the second.<br /><br />Perhaps we could take a page out of Elaine Newton's book. Vegas pop-culture editor Michael Shulman asked local VIPS "What can't you live without?" Newton, who is slugged "hostess/icon," picked the agedashi tofu at Raku, since "freedom" and "culture" were probably too generic. Her dogs, Troy and Geisha, came in second. She's also a big fan of Botox, which, judging from the photo, may be used on the poodles. I was stunned, however, by "icon," a term usually reserved for a name, face, picture or edifice that carries well-known significance and embodies certain qualities, like the Empire State Building or JFK.<br /><br />Hold the presses! Newton isn't alone. Apparently, there is a second icon in LV: Jojo Zanone-Pucci, who has a passion for and expertise in upscale timepieces. There are macro icons and micro icons. Now, I agree with Ms. Z-P about the <a href="http://www.wheretosellart.com/">artistry</a> of classic watches. To quote Keats, "a thing of beauty is a joy forever," but a Cartier Tank Louis is also an acquired taste. The under-30 crowd tells time via their cell phones. I'm guessing they take the same approach to an exquisitely crafted Bucherer chronograph, profiled in the mag's "Indulge" section, as they do to newspapers.<br /><br />Vegas, which is heavy on profiles and accessory features, is splashy, like the city. In short, it's oversized, loaded with pretty women and <a href="http://www.wheretoselladiamondring.com/">divorced</a> from current economic reality. The site offers a free service that allows you to use IM and other things all in one place in a web browser. This means that you can use a browser at school or the office to use IM even if the computer network you are using normally blocks them. While searching for more information on the site I found <a href="http://www.fanatic.net.nz/2007/01/31/imhaha-web-messenger-for-msn-yahoo-aim-qq/">this page</a> where other options for getting around blocks are discussed.<br /><br /><strong>This kind of thing has been going on</strong> for some time now as kids pursue that which is forbidden. But what deeply disturbed me was the fact that here is a Russian site that does not identify itself in any way, that is getting people to provide them with their Gtalk and other account information which could then be used to access other accounts. Worse, any communications that goes through the Russian servers could be monitored and recorded. This could allow people to steal passwords, personal files, and anything else that is transmitted during an IM or chat session between friends. The weekly online <a href="http://www.commercialradiocompany.com/">radio</a> audience increased significantly in the past year to 17% of the U.S. population age 12 and older; up from 13% in 2008. On a weekly basis, online radio reaches 20% of 25-to-54 year-olds; up from 15% in 2008.<br /><br />Bill Rose, senior vice president of marketing, Arbitron Inc., says "The sharp growth in weekly usage of Online radio... provides compelling evidence that radio's digital platforms may be reaching critical mass. In February the American Society of Magazine Editors publicly called out the magazine for guidelines violations, citing its "trap door" cover that month, in which an Open Here box led to an advertisement. In the end ASME issued an acquittal, though a strongly worded one: "There are ASME members who believe this cover execution is little short of <a href="http://www.the-ten-commandments.com/">editorial sacrilege</a>...The lingering concern among ASME members is, will competition force magazines to accommodate especially invasive ad executions on their covers, disguising a sales coup as an editorial initiative?" Then an item last week on Gawker -- "Esquire Is Getting Nervous" -- noted the <a href="http://consultant-directory.tradepub.com/?pt=cat&page=_MEX">publication's ad revenue</a> dropped 22% in the first quarter. Certainly this drop was unrelated to the cover "flap" (no pun intended).<br /><br />Speaking of covers, a close-up of George Clooney graces the May issue. But, wait, there's more! It turns out it's the "first-ever Mix & Match cover," and by ripping and folding horizontally, <a href="http://www.services.ws/">you can replace</a> George's chin, or browline, or philtrum -- and, hey, it's Barack Obama! Or one of 25 other guys. Collect 'em all, kids!<br /><br />Apparently this is no ethics violation, but it does seem an odd gimmick for a mag that has achieved the gravitas of Esquire. In fact, last year the Museum of Modern Art launched an exhibit saluting the Esquire covers of George Lois, circa 1962 to 1972 (Andy Warhol drowning in a can of Campbell's <a href="http://www.kettle.ws/">tomato soup</a>, Muhammad Ali as St. Sebastian, etc.). Somehow it seems doubtful that in 40 years MoMA will place the Mix & Match series under glass, no matter whose nose is chosen.<br /><br />Obviously Esquire is willing to employ new and <a href="http://www.makemoneyinternet.cn/">innovative methods</a> to sell issues, and that's no small task for print publications these days. But is it too 20th Century to suggest that blinking lights (yes, Esquire tried that with an E-Ink cover a few months back) can't do the work of excellent writing and artwork?<br /><br />The May issue features some content that is excellent and some that isn't. Not surprisingly, there's some really <a href="http://www.fordummies.cn/">good writing</a> here, particularly:<br /><br />Scott Raab's review of a new Mike Tyson <a href="http://www.domainradioshow.com/">documentary</a> captures both the boy and the man inside the ex-champ.<br />Tom Chiarella's lengthy response to "What is a Man?" may or may not line up with your own, but it's elegantly stated.<br />Mike Sager's profile of Todd Marinovich, a hotshot football draft pick turned junkie, is a riveting look at the dark side of American sports culture. Other pieces don't soar quite as high. A profile of another Todd --"Todd Palin is the Man for America Now" -- fails to elevate the First Dude into the icon of manhood we're meant to believe he has become (unless you work for the <a href="http://www.alaskafishingtrip.cn/">Republican Party of Alaska</a>).<br /><br />If you're noticing a pattern, it's not accidental. Mr. Clooney's <a href="http://www.laser-surgery.biz/">facial parts</a> are on the cover for a reason, after all. This is a themed issue: How To Be A Man 2009. The magazine's first person plural -- we this and we that -- never stops offering advice, though much of it focuses on what to purchase (leaving the feeling that ad pages come in many guises). But whether Esquire is advising you which <a href="http://www.ribboncuttingscissors.cn/">power tools</a> to keep in your <a href="http://consultant-directory.tradepub.com/?pt=cat&page=Auto">garage</a> or how to make a killer barbeque sauce, you're often left with an overarching sense that the editors are trying just a bit too hard.<br /><br />It's a given that other generations -- such as my father's -- would have gotten a good laugh out of all this man stuff. But then he and many like him were facing the hostile guns of a German Panzer Division when they were learning how to become men. That's not to say our definition of manhood hasn't radically changed in the decades since; I know I've <a href="http://www.highriskinvestment.cn/">succeeded</a> in ways he never dreamed about.<br /><br />But I remember a true <a href="http://www.personaltrainingsoftware.cn/">tough guy</a> who once told me that the toughest guys he had ever met never spoke about being tough. Corollary: If you have to learn how to be a man from a magazine article, it may be too late. Ironically, on page 25, Ian McShane of "Deadwood" more or less states this in his Q&A:<br />"ESQ: What's the best advice you ever got?<br />IM: None at all. Work it out on your own, son."<br /><br />In one of my other lives, I teach a <a href="http://www.onlinedegreespsychology.us/">college course</a> entitled "<a href="http://www.notebookrentals.cn/">Writing Creatively</a> for Magazines," where last week we discussed at length Tom Junod's transcendent profile of Mr. Rogers for Esquire, published in 1998. Without any hyperbole, I described it to my students as being the single best magazine article I've ever read. Thankfully, Junod still writes for Esquire.<br /><br />Nobody asked, but that would be my <a href="http://consultant-directory.tradepub.com/?pt=cat&page=Infostor">21st Century strategy</a> for Esquire: Fewer Blinking Lights on the Covers, More Tom Junods on the Inside Pages. They work fast and deliver what they say they will. If you have any questions or concerns, let them know.<BR><BR>With any submission service, you HAVE to provide them with good information for the listings. If you don't use good keywords, have a description that makes sense, and spell-check your listing, you only have yourself to blame if you don't get good results.<BR><BR><STRONG>Confirmation Emails</STRONG><BR>Krish will deal with all the confirmation emails, but if you don't do a lot of submissions, you may want to create a temp email and see what you get. After two packages that totaled about 1,500 directories, my folder has 1656 from the emails, confirmations, and confirmation replies. It did take some time, but I wanted to get those because you can see what was submitted, and also get an idea of over what time period the submission took place. In my case, the emails came in over 4-5 days, with a few that keep showing up every day, and this will continue for a couple of months as editors review and approve the listings.<BR><BR><STRONG>Submission Reports</STRONG><BR>I also chose to get the emails because Krish is the second submission service that does not provide a list of where they submit. I was a little concerned about that because the first one that didn't provide a report also didn't submit our site ANYWHERE. Yeah, they were a total scam. But I am happy to report that this is not. I would like to get the reports, but in my case I don't need them when I see these emails come in.<BR><BR>If you don't get the emails, ask that they send you and email with the information they are going to submit BEFORE they start working. This protects you from any errors and also protects them from the same thing.
