So unlike last month, I'm posting my monthly top 10 within the proper time line!

I'm kicking things up with a Kwaito track from one or two years ago. Always good to start a night with some good vibes like this.

In kinda the same vibe, I really liked the Flying Lotus contribution to Hyperdub's 5 year anniversary compilation. Loving the way he switches the bassline and the snare from their usual place and the groove of the result.

Next is a Masala selection that you probably won't get anywhere else. Dancehall from the French west indies meets Haitian Kompa-zouk and it sounds amazing! Brilliant alchemy on this one by Admiral T, who's singing about those who don't like Haitian people but would dance on Carimi, T-Vice, Tikabzi or Tabou Combo! This one is a couple years old but you can judge by yourself, it won't be getting old! Instant classic!

I got to pay respect to mister Geko Jones for this month Top 10, because this sir gave me some serious heat when we met in NY a last month. Geko gave me this awesome piece of remix work by Subskrpt on Jahdan Blakkamoore's acapella. Don't know much about Subskrpt, but I read on Diplo's twitter that this should be released on vinyl with other voicing on it. Hopefully this will happen!

Aside of some mind blowing accoustic cumbia from the coast of Columbia, he also pointed me in the direction of Batida, a Portugal based duo formed of DJ Mpula and Beat Laden, who are revisiting some original material and turning them into some awesome dancefloor magic. In the same vein of revisiting African (?) Congolese (?) Rumba (?) highlife (?) type of guitar playing, here's another producer from France named Débruit who's been putting out some of the best beatmaking out of the "Hexagone". This is getting released on Dec 7th on CIVIL MUSIC under the moniker of Spatio Temporel EP.

Blanquito Man is a usual suspect of Latin music in all kind of ways. He use and still is the lead singer of King Chango, has been in many other projects, and recently has been doing music under the name of Zuzuku. The acappella of Con Paso de Campeon has been circulating on the internet for a minute and Pedro Infame took advantage of it and turn it into something very unusual, a mix of kuduro inspired beats with dubstep, some rock harmonics all of that under the reggae pop singing of Blanquito Man. The result is highly recommended and pretty unique. Judge for yourself (Thanks to Toy Selectah for this one):

I'm finishing this top with a song I've heard a few months ago through this video. It took some time to grow on me but now I listen to it several time in a row. I always loved Chicago House and Azari and III are perfectly bringing back the sound of the early 90's on this song. Great producers from Toronto, definitely need to keep an eye on them!

Douster does it again. Douster is producing a lot, so much that sometimes we ask ourselves if not too much, and sometimes it works and sometimes it works a little less, but for the new EP out of Exploited Rec, it works very well. As soon as Douster is getting into dancehall area, he produces incredibly percussive bombs! Go check out the other takes on the original on Beatport here.

So this month, I'm putting some "about to be released material" and some very very fresh tracks, again in no particular order. Starting with Bonjay, a Toronto duo that I picked for management recently and who are releasing their first EP at the end of November. The EP is called Gimmee Gimmee and it also showcase the remixing talents of Poirier, Grahmzilla and Smalltown Romeo. More on this soon but Gimmee Gimmee and Faat Gyal have been on my top songs playlist for a while and it's awesome that you guys can have access to them very very soon. I'm pretty stoked about this project.

Next is the usual suspect L-Vis 1990 that I have consistently put in my top 10. This dude is just simply running the dance music game these days. That's it, that's all. He has a brand new EP on Sound Pellegrino, check it out. And too keep it on a funky vibe, the Dj Shredah remix of Vybz's Ramping Shop will definitely stay on top of my dj playlist for a while. I posted the song to download a few weeks ago, so go have a look HERE for more background info on the track.

The Tanlines project have been going on for a bit more than a year. With member of Professor Murder and Storm & Stress, Tanlines is definitely next on your to watch band list for 2010. Real Life is their next single and it's straight up high quality indie-pop with a "tropical" twist. To put next up to Lemonade, The Very Best or, with a bit of stretching, El Guincho.

Sonido Martines is pretty much the ultimate crate digger when it comes to Cumbia and music in South America. He put together a compilation for /Rupture's label Soot Records that present different new cumbia producers from Argentina. It's known territory for those who follow the scene but a good introduction if you don't. He's own remix of The Destellos's Elsa, with Fefe "representing" on the mic, is definitely a highlight of the compilation. You can download it for free on RCRD LBL.

Next in line is French man freshman, Douster. His latest EP for ZZK Rec has been praised pretty much anywhere, so as I'm a month late posting this hum, october top 10, well you guys might already have buy it. Follow the link for more of Douster.

Los Rakas is a duo of 2 Panamanian guys based in San Fransisco who are revisiting dancehall classics with a sharp flow in spanglish. Panabay Twist volumen 2 got release a few month ago and I just put my hand on it thanks to my man Geko Jones. This one though by El Senor Stereotyp took the acapella from the mixtape and is bringing it to a next level of audio violence. Méchant.

Capverdien carribean Kuduro take over! I meant to post this song by Shabba Tigre for months but kept it private until today. I'll post the song by itself very soon, but since then you can taste a bit of it by watching this making of video:

Last selection of the month is a sneakpick of Poirier's bonus CD that will come with his album to be dropped in march 2010. Album is called Running High and will bring together the 3 EP released throughout 2009 and 2010, as well a bonus cd with new version, remixes and other unreleased material. Baobinga did a great job muscleing up Gyal Secret Picture (on Poirier's Run The Riddim) and is definitely an up and coming producer.

African Funky?

Il y a quelques mois, alors que les séries de chansons Skank débarquaient sur internet, avec les premiers mixs d’introduction au Funky, j’avais repéré le clip DIY de T Boy qui commence par une introduction hilarante et pleine de second degré. Comme vous pouvez le voir, T Boy se moque tout à la fois des danses un peu puérile du funky, de leur africanité souvent revendiqué et du vieux stéréotype de l’Africain joyeux et un peu simplet. Le tout devient une perle de second degré, où l’accent de T Boy est fortement marqué (probablement exagéré en fait) et qui s’appelle Don’t Jealous Me Funky. Ce fût mon premier contact avec la récupération du Funky par les jeunes africains vivant en Angleterre, qu’il soit de première ou de deuxième génération.

Depuis que je le connais le Funky a été associé à une forme « d’Africanité » autant que le genre est conçu comme un mix de soca et de 2-Step. Dans bien des premiers morceaux il y a une imagerie sonore et nominative qui utilise les images de « percussions tribales », de « retour aux sources » (cf le tribal skank par exemple). En autant que j’ai pu en comprendre, de lectures, visionnements et discussions, le Funky a aussi été associé dès ses débuts à la population noire d’Angleterre plus qu’à aucune autre communauté (si tant est que cela veuille dire quoi que ce soit). Il y aurait beaucoup à dire sur le sujet de l’usage de cette imagerie de l’africanité dans le discours et les représentations du funky, mais je voudrai plutôt porter attention sur le très intéressant renversement qui apparaît par quelques chansons et quelques vidéos sur youtube. Ce que l’on voit présentement c’est l’apparition, dans la ligné de T-Boy, de chansons qui sont clairement écris et chanté par des africains qui se revendiquent comme tel.

Comment le font-ils? Et bien en soulignant, ou en fait en ne cachant pas leur accent, et aussi en nommant leur chanson avec des marqueurs symboliques très clair. Par exemple, dans le Malewa skank, avant la chanson ils prennent un accent prononcé, qui disparait dans la chanson en tant que telle. L’accent d’abord est important dans les chansons et marque un changement important dans la musique urbaine émergente en Angletterre. Discutant du sujet avec Dub Boy récemment, il me disait que beaucoup d’artistes Grime étant en fait des fils d’immigrants. Par exemple Dizzee Rascal est de deuxième génération Ghanéen et Nigérien, même chose pour Tinchy Stryder. Il y aurait sans doute beaucoup à dire sur le sujet et je ne sais pas si quelqu’un s’est déjà penché sur la question. Outre les questions d’accents, il y a également d’autres voies qui s’ajoute au Funky. Bien évidemment, pour les lecteurs réguliers de Masala, le funky bashment fait le cross over entre la Jamaique et le UK, mais comme le montre la vidéo ci-dessous, il y a même des mélanges d’anglais, français et lingawa.

Mais pour revenir au sujet de cette « africanité » du funky, il est frappant de mettre côte à côte la vidéo du Malewa Skank, où le phantasme du retour aux sources pour des immigrés de première ou seconde génération est mise en scène par le changement de vêtement, comme pour dire, c’est ce que nous sommes vraiment en-dessous, et à côté les montages vidéos de L-Vis 1990 qui utilisent des images de danseurs habillé(déguisé?) presque pareillement, mais qui exprime pour le coup une autre phantasmagorie, celle du producteur blanc qui voit sa musique comme étant « tribal », ou même « primal », dans le double sens de première et de dépouillée jusqu’ aux éléments essentiels.

Alors il se passe quelque chose d’intéressant à Londres en autant que l’on puisse en juger à travers le filtre d’Internet. L’émergence d’Afrikan Boy avec son fort accent africain, aidé par MIA, et des one shots éclairant comme T-Boy ou le Malewa Skank. C’est comme-ci la jeunesse urbaine immigrante d’afrique de l’ouest anglophone est en train de vraiment se mettre en avant et représenter d’où ils sont et qui ils sont (c’est-à-dire un mélange subtil d’identité) en l’exprimant par la musique. Il y a clairement un pont qui se crée entre la tradition caribéenne du « show your flag » et ce mouvement qui s’amorce en distance de ce qui se passait avec le grime. Wayne Marshall me rappelait comment dans bien des situations, il arrivait que de jeunes immigrants, pour se sortir de situations critiques dans la ville, prenaient l’accent et l’attitude «jamaicaine», en espérant recouvrir un peu plus de respect et de «coolitude» généralement attribuée aux Jamaicans dans les communautés caribéennes. Et pour finir sur cette question de différence entre le grime et le funky sur ce point, Dub Boy suggérait que peut-être le format du funky se prêtaient plus à ce genre reprise et retournement de stéréotypes, car le genre en tant que tel serait plus ouvert. La house serait plus malléable que le grime en quelque sorte. Je ne sais pas trop quoi pensé de cette idée, mais j’estime en général qu’on peut faire dire pas mal n’importe quoi à n’importe quelle musique ou format musical, il suffit d’avoir quelque chose à dire et la volonté de battre en brèche les symboles traditionnels.

Fnaire Nouveau EP avec CHEB BILAL

Fnaire est un groupe fétiche de Masala. Nous les suivons depuis leur excellent album Yed El Henna, sorti durant l'été 2007. J'avais fait un post sur eux et mis à télécharger un extrait de l'album. Et bien je n'avais pas encore visité leur tout nouveau site web, et je viens de m'apercevoir qu'ils ont donné un tout nouvel EP au courant de l'été. Le EP a été conçu en collaboration avec le chanteur Raï Cheb Bilal et il tourne autour de l'amitié nécessaires entre marocains et algérien. Allez faire un tour sur leur site pour plus d'info.

Dj Shredah is from Bristol, UK and Bristol is definitely the host of a great music scene. Just recently , we've seen Joker exploding the dubstep genre by adding some Love Symbol feel to it, while Dub Boy and the Ruffneck Discotek crew are keeping things moving on the dancehall/reggae side. And it was during Dub Boy's mix at Karnival in MTL that I first heard the tune featured here, a Funky revisit of Vybz Kartel's massive hit "Ramping Shop". Dub Boy was later telling me he even liked that version better than the original. Like the Heatwave blog, we've been talking and following the crossover between Funky and dancehall for a while now and things are getting into place, with XLR8R doing it's cover on Funky and asking Gabriel from Heatwave to do Funky Bashment mix. The result is terrific mix full of dubplates and is definitely a must listen. Head over there to download it and for the tracklist. You'll find Dj Shredah contribution in there.

Shredah dropped a great compilation of home made Funky-Dancehall mash-ups a few month ago called 100% SHREDAH REMIX BASHMENT VS FUNKY VOL 1. Be warned, the man as way more in stock and vol.2 is on it's way very soon! He was kind enough to send me a promo and there's bombs in there, so keep an eye on the guy. This is exclusive for Masala.

Download: DJ Shredah - Bashment vs Funky House Remixes Vol 1 [2009]

Dj Shredah vit à Bristol, UK et Bristol abrite une excellente scène musicale. Récemment, on a pu voir Joker faire explosé le dubstep en y ajoutant une bonne touche de groove à la Love Symbol, et pendant ce temps Dub Boy et son crew du Ruffneck Discotek continue à faire bouger les choses du coté dancehall/reggae. Et c'est pendant le mix de Dub Boy durant le premier Karnival à MTL que j'ai d'abord entendu le morceau présenté plus haut, un remix funky du hit de Vybz Kartel: "Ramping Shop". Dub Boy m'a d'ailleurs dit le lendemain qu'il préférait cette version à l'original. Comme chez Heatwave, nous avons parlé et suivi le crossover entre Funky et dancehall depuis un moment et les choses semblent se mettrent en place maintenant, avec XLR8R qui fait sa couv de septembre sur le Funky et qui demande à Gabriel de Heatwave de faire un Funky Bashment mix. Le résultat est super, plein de dubplates et c'est un mix qu'il faut absolument écouter. Allez faire un tour ici pour le télécharger et pour la liste des morceaux. Il y a quelques mois, Shredah a sorti une excellente compilation de mash-up Funky-Dancehall fait maison qui s'appelle 100% SHREDAH REMIX BASHMENT VS FUNKY VOL 1. Soyez prévenu, il en a encore beaucoup en stock et le volume 2 arrive très bientôt! Il m'a gentiment envoyé le promo et il y a pas mal de bombe là-dedans, donc gardez un oeil sur lui.
