In the very center of the timepiece is a realistic hand-painted representation of our earth, viewed as if one is suspended above the North pole. Thus this incredible masterpiece is not simply a moon phase watch, but an actual astronomical instrument. You will notice rotating just beneath the bezel is the symbol of the sun in all its fiery glory. The sun is depicted from our earthly point of view "traveling" around the earth. The sun makes one full rotation every 24 hours.

The Moonphase Watch ,conceptualized by Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, encompasses our Sun, Earth and Moon system. The watch is scientifically accurate depicting the moon phase as well as the lunar and solar gravitation resulting in tidal movements. The entire team at Ulysse Nardin consisting of engineers, technicians and watchmakers used an ingenious method of splitting the moon's rotation across two discs combining into one display achieving remarkable accuracy so much so that more than 100,000 years will have to pass before it displays a full moon rather than a new moon. The sun's 24 hour rotation displayed via another disc allows for the determination of the current moon phase in relation to any location in the world. In addition, The Moonstruck, shows the global dynamics of tides including the current tidal status and trend in relation to specific coastlines or oceans and the combined influence of the Moon and Sun resulting in Spring tides.

The Mechanical Timepiece is equipped with a quick setting mechanism to adjust the pointer calender and a quick setting-setting to adjust the hour hand foreword or backward according to the wearers time zone. The Moonstruck is powered by a Ulysse Nardin in-house movement: The Moonstruck Caliber 106 which is an exclusively Ulysse Nardin development. Aside from its astronomical functions, the Automatic Caliber 106 Movement has a 50 hour power reserve and an escapement and hairspring crafted from silicon.

Moonstruck is available in limited edition of 500 pieces in 18 karat red gold and 500 pieces in platinum. The case is 46mm wide and is water resistant to 100 meters.

The moon in its ever waxing and waning suspension above earth had been the subject of much speculation until 1969 when man stepped onto its still dusty surface and lifted the shroud of mystery. Outside bedroom windows the moon ushers in sleep to the weary and keeps company to those who remain awake. No wonder the moon phase is such a vastly popular complication.

Hublot won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve prize for jewelery watch of the year 2009, and I am not surprised. The Effect of War on Watches

The demands of War has shaped the Watch Industry in countless ways. In the early, 1700's, tracking the inevitable passage of time was a matter of life and death. The intense need for an accurate timepiece was magnified on October 22, 1707, when four British Men 'O War sank just off the Cornish Coast and 2000 men were lost. This was not as a result of enemy fire, but rather human error. The fleet had no idea where they were, as they had no precise chronometer to decipher how far off the Longitude they were. The British Parliament , aggravated by this obviously needless catastrophe, passed the Longitude Act of 1714 whereby: A huge sum of money would be awarded to anyone who could invent a way to determine the precise longitude of a ship's location to within less than one degree. John Harrison's marine chronometer was the first timepiece to successfully determine longitude at sea and his was awarded his prize, after much dispute, in 1773.

In 1880, German Emperor Wilhelm I visited the Berlin Trade Fair and spotted some prototype wristwatches designed by Constant Girard , he ordered 1000 for the German Imperial Navy wristwatches, and by 1880, 2000 had been produced and delivered. During World War I, in the dark trenches, soldiers were not able to see their time pieces, and so luminescence was applied to the dial. The motif originated in World War II and is accompanied by US Airborne motto, "Death from Above". A reminder of the courageous military paratroopers who jumped into enemy territory. The skull symbolized their incredible bravery . The skull motif was used by the military on fighter jets and patches. It was a symbol of strength and defiance of defeat even in the face of death. Today the skull is a tribute to all those brave men and women in combat who serve to defend this country. On March 18th, 2009, Bell and Ross became the official supplier to the French Air Force.

So I am sure you are wondering what these two images have in common. Well the first image is just one of an amazing selection of watches crafted by the Italian Luxury Watch Company U-Boat. If you noticed on the far wall, there hang a couple of gauges, with a mounted face and thick bezel. The guage hands are stark and give a sharp contrast to the face so that they may be read with accuracy in times of imminent danger. Once I saw the gauges, I understood the U-Boat watches.

The content is positive, friendly and educational, featuring politicians, movie stars, musicians and even first ladies. Tomorrow First Lady, Michelle Obama, will appear on Sesame Street to mark its 40th anniversary.

40 years of toddlers have learned their numbers, their alphabet and their time telling ability via Sesame Street. Sesame Street has mirrored the changing times, and even has broached current subjects like the recession. Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie, Zoe and Elmo have become lovable parts of a child's life. "Tickle Me Elmo", became a highly coveted item holiday season a couple years back, where parents actually fought over its red furry frame. These lovable characters have decorated kid's watch dials ,such as this 1979 timepiece featuring Bert and Ernie, for decades.

Mechanical vs Quartz

My first intention when writing this blog was to simply indicate the difference between a Quartz watch and a Mechanical watch. It seemed quite a straightforward project at the time - that is until I started reading through Internet articles and blogs. I started by reading informative articles about the major differences between Quartz and Mechanical watches; I read the simple explanations and then I delved a bit deeper into the not so simple explanations. Everything seemed tranquil and scientific … until I clicked on a thread. I could feel the tension lifting off the WebPages, a kind of harsh grating tension that makes the hairs quiver on the back of ones neck. This came as a surprise – their seemed to be a definite Quartz vs Mechanical Competition going. Almost like color war in camp. Suddenly the Quartz team and the Mechanical team were firing shots at each other. Some threads became quite alarming that I found all too soon my heart hammering in my chest. What was this all about? I kept on reading, my eyes closing, but everyone involved seemed so heated that I wanted to know more. So after a couple of hours and piles of printouts; I felt somehow I was preparing for battle. The quartz vs Mechanical battle. I still have not finished reading my pile of printouts and I am getting more and more anxious about the whole Quartz / Mechanical thing.

In the 1970's Quartz watches almost ground the tradiotional mechanical watch into oblivion, on the other hand Quartz watches lifted mechanical watches from the edge of extintion with the introduction of the hugelyu popular Swatch watch. The Swatch Watch poured enormous wealth into the Swiss Watch Market allowing the older traditional companies like Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin to regain momentum.

The Yankees Have Won!

Yankee fans all over are rejoicing the victory after winning their 27th World Series, beating the Phillies 7-3 in Game 6. If you are a New York Yankee fan then this is the watch for you. Antique Watch Parts with a Sting.

Do you see what I see? Could it be part watch movement, part ... beetle? Huh? This creation is the brainchild of artist Mike Libby, who founded a highly original company called "Insectlab" He joins mostly antique mechanical movement watch parts, and non-endangered high quality specimen from Africa, China, New Guinea, Brazil, and any other places where insects are huge and hairy. Mike Libby has a Degree in Sculpture from RISD, and has been in many exhibits in the USA and Canada. There is a definite Sci-Fi feel to his creations, as he says he likes to merge the real with the unreal, fantasy with history, and mechanics with nature. His "aha" moment came as he stared at a dead intact beetle. He thought how the workings of an insect was like a tiny bit of mechanical machinery. With this association in mind, he thought of a mechanical watch, which he had on hand and combined the two.

The effect is quite impressive, and his insects, especially the beetles, remind me of Harry Potter's Golden Snitch in the game of Quidditch or the poisonous mechanical flying insects set loose to find Lyra in The Golden Compass. His one-of-a-kind creations are available on his InsectLab website, but don't expect them to tell the time.

The Movement of an Old Watch

In this world of gadgets and gizmos, one expects stuff to work; if not it gets thrown out or if the effort is worth it, get it fixed.

A delicately crafted watch case which stopped working ...

"Oh 50 years ago, and I never really got it fixed,"as per great grandma, may be viewed with slight dismay by Billy, a watch novice. Billy may be holding a truly exceptional masterpiece from a great company like Vacheron Constantin or Patek Phillipe, but to Billy the watch is a broken old thing.

One such story occurred to my neighbor and it took an aged indignant watchmaker to change her view on old watches:

My neighbor received a package from her mother. She opened it and gazed at a rose gold watch delicately wrapped in tissue paper, a faint whiff of mothballs tickled her nose.

“It was Grandma’s” she whispered gently closing the clasp around her wrist. She admired the delicate Roman Numerals and studied the blue stone on the dial. Her grandmother had died a month before and her mother had only just found the watch among her things. The watch was not working and she decided to take it to an old watchmaker , to see if she could get a battery for this watch. Wearing this watch would remind her of her grandmother and that was good.

The very next day she set out to the watchmaker. She had seen his store from the city bus, an old faded yellow sign hung above a tiny dusty store front. She entered the store ,and as she did a gentle chiming brought an elderly gentleman from behind a beaded curtain.

“Can I help you, mam?” he said looking at her over the tops of his glasses.

“I was wondering if you can make this watch workable …,” she said trailing off.

“It was my grandmothers…”

The watchmaker took the watch and held it close.

“It is a beauty,” he said and gently wound the watch.

He smiled and said, “It can use a new mainspring and a good cleaning and oiling and then it will be as good as new.”

“No! You don’t understand,” she said, “Can you take out all the old stuff and put in a battery or something like a regular watch.”

The elderly watchmaker grew visibly distressed, his nose turned slightly red and he leaned across the counter. My friend had no idea what she had said wrong, but owing to the watchmaker’s reaction it must have been quite awful.

“You want to remove the intricate mechanical craftsmanship and replace it with a battery? A battery?”

“Yes! I think so.” my friend said.

“I will do no such thing, ” the watchmaker said. “To do this would be tearing the heart and soul out of your grandmother’s watch.”

My friend took the watch, puzzled, and went home. She did not attempt to visit another watchmaker.

Her grandmother’s watch survived its “quartz scare” and I filled my friend in on the marvel of a mechanical watch. The watch is her treasure now.

The New Omega Constellation Collection Gets a Starry Welcome.

The Omega Constellation Collection has been around for a while, but now Omega has given the collection a makeover with some starry help. Nicole Kidman, an Omega ambassador for the Constellation line, attended the Omega Constellation Timepiece event at the Omega Flagship Boutique in New York City, where she met with OMEGA CEO Stephen Urquhart. She donated her Omega Constellation to the "Ambassador Collection Series" of Autographed Watches.

Cindy Crawford, an Omega spokesperson since 1995, and a long time promoter of the Omega Constellation was in London with the OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart, to promote the new Constellation Collection. She visited the OMEGA Boutique at London Westfield, and autographed a box containing a new Constellation watch. The box and its contents were placed in a transparent safe which was locked and placed on display.

Later that evening, Stephen Urquhart and Cindy Crawford hosted an exclusive VIP party at The Almada, a member’s-only club in London’s Mayfair district, to celebrate the new Constellation line. Olympic Gold Medalists shared company with renowned actors and popular singers. The evening was accompanied by a tinge of excitement when it became known that the Constellation ,locked in a safe at the Westfield OMEGA Boutique, would soon be the property of one lucky guest. Guests were given a key in an Omega Constellation Pouch as they left the party. Only one key opened the safe autographed by Cindy Crawford.

The Constellation Timepiece is a stylishly elegant women's timepiece. The new collection has added a lot of dazzle and intense color. Diamonds glitter on the bezel which bares the signature Constellation claws. Diamonds mark the hours amidst a delicate falling satin pattern on the dial. A Sonnerie by Gerald Genta

The Gerald Genta Arena Metasonic Watch encompasses a complication rarely accomplished by even the most revered watch makers - the sonnerie. In addition Gerald Genta has incorporated a number of musical complications which heightens the level of complexity.

The Sonnerie is likened to a minute repeater; however, a minute repeater is set to chimes at the will of the wearer, on the other hand a Sonnerie (or sometimes known as a clockwatch) chime automatically. "Sonnerie" is French for "making sound" or "ring". The Sonnerie is like a tower clock which chimes on the hour (petit sonnerie) or quarter hour (grande sonnerie).

Both movements are extremely complex to create, and incorporate a large number of intricate parts. In the early nineties Gerald Genta created its first Sonnerie. The Arena Metasonic has utilized metallurgy to enhance the sounds emitted during chiming. The 46mm wide case is specially designed to carry the sounds. This timepiece is manually wound to power the extremely complex movement which includes a tourbillon escapement, and sonnerie. The face of the watch resembles a clock suspended on a building chiming the time to all the residents on the streets below. The hammers are visible on the lower left hand side.

The watches which will be available in limited edition, will arrive in a box worthy of mention. A light will illuminate the watch in the box, but to get at it you will have to place your hand on a bimometric reader. A wonderful playful edition.

Sonnerie's are quite rare compared with the prolific market of repeaters and minute repeaters. The Sonnerie requires a continuous power supply by the mainspring as it chimes automatically on the hour. The Repeaters are powered by a repeater slide and a spring mechanism, the Sonnerie requires a single strike train. In the past the watchclocks that striked at the hours and quarter required separate strike trains for each (the hour strike train and the quarter), the end-product being a "triple train: clockwatch with three mainsprings.Although these watches are quite rare, albeit rather pricey, they can be quite annoying striking on the quarter of an hour. However the watches are equipped with a rather clever "strike-silent, or Silence mode. Choosing to use the sonnerie complications means sliding the slide bolt on the case. The watch enters the sonnerie mode and chimes, clear and delicate, at the next hour or quarter. Some clockwatches are crafted with a repeater as well. The repetition function is powered by the second mainspring, and usually is operated by a button rather than the slide. The only setback in this case would be the use of the repeater will deplete the power reserve required by the sonnerie.
