It's probably a year old now, and because I never used it, it somehow never showed up on my credit report. I'm going to close it (a store card with a $400 limit isn't doing me much good at this point) but will this cause it to show up on my report as a closed account? Will it report all of those months that I "paid" maybe helping me out a bit?

I also have an HSBC card that has an annual fee if I don't close it by my statement close next month. This is on my credit report, and I'll probably take a small score hit. Problem is, if I close two accounts at the same time, I'm worried about a sizeable score drop that might show up on Citi or Amex's radar. Any thoughts? Should I pay the fee and keep the card a while longer?
_________________
Real FICOs: 680 TU - 680 EX - 667 EQ
TC FAKOs: 680 TU - 631 EX - 668 EQ
Oldest CC is 2yrs/2mnths. They still count towards account aging components of your scores, but of course the credit limits won't be used to calculate your utilization percentages.

The Macy's card isn't on your reports now, so I doubt it will appear suddenly simply because you close it. Since there's no fee for it, though, why bother?

The HSBC may affect your score slightly if you close it, but if you don't use it there's no reason to pay that fee. So close it and save some money. Paying to keep your score a bit higher makes little sense unless you're at a critical point in your score level and plan to apply for a mortgage or some other big ticket item. And that's unlikely.
_________________
Polonius
"Neither a borrower, nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend"

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: realmedia
Posted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:17 pm

Polonius write

Closed accounts remain on your reports for ten years currently. In my own experience, I've seen little change in my FICO when I've closed accounts. Of course, I PIF and therefore haven't worried about utilization or net credit available. If you carry balances and close accounts with significant credit limits, you'll clearly take a hit.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

<!--

I thought closing cards; keeping limits low; and keeping balances low was the best thing.

Well I guess I should have not closed my accounts I had and not kept telling them to lower back down my limits. HISTORY is such a huge part of it. Thankfully I have one card that I have had for 10 years....Bank of America; was MBNA and I have a 30k limit on it...

I now am looking to get a 2nd card to transfer some business debt to...I have like 10k on that card ( so I am below the 40/50% ratio) on that card and have excellent credit

So I want a card that will show my limit and will not hike me all the time on my interest rate. I will do my part as I always have paying on time etc.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

<!--

I think that the 5.9 one is probably good but maybe try to see if you can get a 0% one to carry for a year then you may do something like the 5.9 or in a year- you may qualify for another new card who knows...the best thing to do is get your score the best you can first before applying for new cards IF YOU HAVE THE TIME

if you don't have time then you do what you have to...I am right now waiting approx 45 more days to get my new card as I know I am doing some things with switching and paying down that will boost my position to get a higher limit on my new card. Essentially, we're done with managing them half-assed. After spending some time educating ourselves we have a few immediate steps to take.

We have 3 credit cards with balances that need to be moved to a lower APR.

Two of them are at 17% APR and one is at 27%. I know. UGH. I don't think the 27% started off at that APR. We were struck by a case of $2,000 in fraud charges. I'm assuming Chase bumped the rate after we called to have the charges disputed and froze the card. Not sure though, just an assumption.

So after a handful of research hours I came across PENFED's 5.99% lifetime APR on the transfer balance with no fee. I'd love to jump on that but I want to make sure there isn't a better solution?

Thanks for the help..

Awwc

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: multiplierx
Senior Credit Expert (500+ posts)
Posted: Wed Sep 19, 2007 6:55 pm

It depends on how long you think it'll take you to pay off the balances. There's better BT rates out there but not "lifetime".

You might take a look at some of the 0% BT offers out there. It'll only be a year but that's a year of 0% and you very well might find another 0% at that time if you still have a balance.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: Ira
Board Monitor
Posted: Thu Sep 20, 2007 12:23 am

You might want to take a look at this site which has a number of 0% intro rate cards:

http://www.balancetransfer.cc/creditcardblog/btcc.htm
_________________
Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

Ira

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: awwc
Posted: Thu Sep 20, 2007 1:47 am

thanks guys. I'm an international student arrived at US just 1.5 months ago, SSN and state ID applied for, and as a grad student I have a yearly stipend of $20k+.

Spending patterns: The kind of schoolwork left me little chance to overspend, so probably any card used would be for necessities (rent, utilities, food, cell phone plans, meds) only, less than $1000 and pif.

So I have a check card from my credit union already (strangely, defying all recent cases, this large university is sleeping with a local credit union), but their student card's APR is 15.99%-- not bad, but just par.

The problem here is: I should apply a student card now, or I can just get one later since there's I won't need credit anyway?

Thanks!

(BTW: In my country the typical APR for a credit card is 27%.)

Guest: swiwia
Posted: Mon Sep 17, 2007 6:38 pm

Do you plan on carrying a balance from month to month? If not, as long as your limit is enough for you to live on, I would say that you are fine.

Me? I personally like having a lot of credit available, so I would get the extra card (especially if it was at a rate that is less then I was used to paying).
_________________
BankRatesWatch .com

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: LustfortheMoment
Senior Credit Expert (500+ posts)
Posted: Mon Sep 17, 2007 7:03 pm

Quote:
but their student card's APR is 15.99%-- not bad, but just par.

Don't get sucked in by ANY rate. The fine print states that you only earn the 1% if you carry a transferred balance and since payments are applied to the lowest APR first I think I'll be passing on this one. The b/t rate was 3.99% until october so I plan on using it strictly for that.

_________________
"Believe not everything, but only what is approved: the former is foolish, the latter the act of a sensible man." --Democritus

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

<!--

I work for a very small company with no associations with anyone who is connected to a credit union, and I'm not affiliated with any major groups really. No military associations either, just some friends who are marines.

There's the Montauk CU, which I could theoretically join, but they don't offer credit cards at all, and their loan options are very limited. They also only have 1 or 2 ATMs in Manhattan AFAIK, which is a dealbreaker.

Anyone else here live in NY/NYC/LI and know of a good credit union, or even a good list? I'm up to suggestions at this point!

Thanks!
_________________
Real FICOs: 680 TU - 680 EX - 667 EQ
TC FAKOs: 680 TU - 631 EX - 668 EQ
Oldest CC is 2yrs/2mnths. I believe in order to apply for a GEMB paypal card, you have to log in your paypal account first. If the account was opened without your knowledge, then you should definitely contact GEMB to report it, then you should put a fraudulent alerts on your CRs so that no future application can be done without banks contacting you.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: multiplierx
Senior Credit Expert (500+ posts)
Posted: Sun Sep 16, 2007 9:48 pm

I'd find out quick just in case it's identity theft.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: jrjdrayer
Credit Expert (100+ Posts)
Posted: Sun Sep 16, 2007 10:27 pm

Not too long ago, I clicked on something on the paypal website, while I was signed on , and a short time later on my credit report, I too, noticed a new account from GEMB/Paypal. It took about 3 or 5 days then another week to receive the card which they sent in a very nice package.
After you have an account with AMEX for 1 year, you'll qualify for the sign& travel and the flexible payment option. Anything related to travel can be treated like a credit card where you can carry a balance, but the APR is high-they lowered it for me by the way but I never carried any balance. Anything that's $300 or more is treated like credit card. For me it's $200 or more by invitation. You have to sign up for these things;otherwise, it's going to be due in full every month.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

<!--

I think the benefits of the card are worth more than $450 ONLY if you travel a lot. I enjoy the hotel upgrades the most and I use concierge all the time. I can't complain about the fee or the service I receive from AMEX, but what I REALLY like about it is, when I call customer service, they pick up the phone in ft. lauderdale, fl, not India.

CardRatings.com is the most comprehensive source for comparing credit card offers. Please visit CardRatings.com to view the best rated credit cards!

Guest: angelo21
Credit Expert (100+ Posts)
Posted: Wed Jun 06, 2007 9:47 am

AJ wrote:
What I am ticked off about is everyone seems to think a platinum card at $450 a year is the way to go, I disagree

Not everyone.
