I was on facebook and saw a beautiful new work by Michael Janis. He is on his way to SOFA - the 16th Annual Exposition of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art in Chicago. An art exposition dedicated to bridging the worlds of design, decorative and fine art. Michael, Allegra and Tim are at the Maurine Littleton Gallery booth. Below is Michael’s statement about the work.

"Hi Lillian! Glad you like the new works. The new pieces are a continuation of my frit powder drawings that I have been working on for some time now. The layered compositions allow me to make unusual juxtapositions of imagery.

I work hard to create some kind of meaning out of my artworks - dream-state surrealism using figures, text and common objects, and hint at somewhat voyeuristic questions. The artworks suggest meanings but they encourage the viewers to draw their own conclusions. The work has an intrinsic meaning for me, but remains open to multiple interpretations. I want to encourage the possibility of exploring meanings beyond those I put there – I count on the viewer bringing something to the work."

Beautiful drive to charlottesville. We have a new storeroom at MJH so we spent the morning doing inventory and in the afternoon installed John Grant's work in the sleep clinic. John has an astonishing show at the Second Street Gallery.

I had an epiphany in ceramics class today, one of my bowls was a little thick so I did some carving on the inside, what great fun!

We worked at NIH on Monday. Installed Chris Stevens and John Held at HHS on Tuesday, afterwards I took KT to the airport for her trip to Korea. Back to NIH on Thursday, ceramics class that evening and worked with Gretchen on Friday. Tomorrow I'm heading for Harrisonburg then Charlottesville for three days.

President Obama came to NIH today and gave a great speech. We've been working hard all week to make sure everything looked perfect. Unfortunately this was as close as we got to him.

I've been having a bit of a mental block about my own work over the last few weeks. On Thursday I started a ceramics class at Clay Queen Pottery in Del Ray. I'd taken ceramics in college and loved it, but felt painting and drawing would be a better emphasis. In class I had one Déjà vu moment at the wheel and now can't wait to get back to class. It also helped me get over whatever resistance I was having with my encaustics and I worked happily all weekend.

Les Yeux du Monde will be moving their new gallery space, designed by W.G. Clark and Associates. Their first show will feature Dean Dass, current chair of the University of Virginia Art Department and well known printmaker, painter and book artist.

Biographical Statement

Through the lens of wife, mother, and daughter I filter experiences, which the painter in me then translates into the color and texture of acrylic on canvas. The addition of an array of acrylic mediums transforms traditional acrylic painting into a myriad of expressions: impasto textures, delicate glazes, supports transfigured by pastes, matte, gloss or slow drying gels altering the paints. Once bearing a finite personality, acrylics of today are extremely versatile. I have fun experimenting with combinations and pushing the limits of these materials.

I have always been interested in communication and relationships, having traded a career in broadcast media for a Masters in Teaching from Virginia’s Curry School of Education. From working individually with advertisers to teaching kindergarteners in Charlottesville Public Schools, the idea of creative messaging has been the common thread in these experiences.

In 1990, I left teaching to concentrate my energy on homemaking and family. With my own children much time was spent enjoying picture books. The richness of modern children’s literature alive with fascinating illustrations first captivated me as a teacher in training because it is the epitome of creative messaging. During that time my desire to draw and paint, activities I had not thought about since early college, reemerged. Since 2000, I have expanded my techniques through workshops with Lee Alter; Don Andrews; Carol Barnes; Shelly Bechtel-Sheppherd; Ann Chenoweth; Alex Powers; Joyce and Steve Rodgers; Richard Weaver.

The imagery of flora resonates with me at this season of my life. I marvel at each unique design, texture, and color. But even more amazing, I marvel that each glorious bloom began as a hard, tiny seed buried in dirt, with no power in itself to be so filled with grace. The seed rests in the soil and must receive nourishment, water, and the sun’s light. And so I am learning this in both painting and life.

had a glorious time in Harrisonburg, a great visit with Gabe, conference call with Mom and Gretch during the red carpet. Watched the emmys from my jacuzzi in the bedroom, sweet!

I spent the first part of the week at NIH, on Thursday we finished Stafford and installed the Stafford Medical Office Building. It was such a long day, I had every intention of going to Novie & Mike's opening at the McLean Project for the Arts, but bailed. Friday a quick day trip to Charlottesville to take down artwork in the sleep lab and change the exhibit. Tomorrow I'm going to Harrisonburg to visit Gabe at JMU and then back to Charlottesville for a flurry of studio visits and our art committee meeting.
