Diesel Users Suffer More Lung Cancer; a Simple Solution is to Hand from ChemEcol and VEPower

Those who work with and at close proximity to diesel engines, especially lorry drivers, are at a higher risk of cancer according to a recent US study. This is on top of the elevated risk of "heart disease and stroke, possibly resulting from enhanced coagulation and arterial thrombosis" such exposure gives. The good news is that a British company has developed a fuel technology that is seen to significantly reduce ultra fine particulate emissions by as much as 45%.

Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom, March 28, 2009 -- Truckers endure such grave risks as lung cancers, heart disease and stroke all the time they run their engines. But it's not just the lorry drivers who are at risk. The American study also saw that those working with the and near trucks (fork truck drivers, warehousemen, mechanics, and even office workers) are at elevated risk from these killers. Why?

Diesel exhaust carries particulate matter; this is what colours it smoky black. Particulates are both created by and carriers of toxic substances called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Many of these are known to be particularly carcinogenic, mutagenic. Some of these particles are small enough (100nm or less) to be classified as nanoparticles. These have been found to become distributed around the body via the blood supply once inhaled with notable deposits being found in the liver and heart. If ingested (when particles have settled on food or in drink) they will also pass into the gastro-intestinal tract (4).

It's not just haulage workers and their colleagues who are at risk. Black carbon (again, part of the exhaust) exposure in city children has been shown to reduce development in terms of intelligence (5). The particulate matter we have been looking at is known also to exacerbate respiratory complaints, allergies such as asthma and may agitate some skin complaints also. Some studies have found that certain particulate constituents can be carcinogenic on the skin as well as when inhaled (6).

Field Fisher Waterhouse reports record year for Asbestos Claims Group

Asbestosis-Related Years of Potential Life Lost Before Age 65 Years --- United States, 1968--2005

Exposure to asbestos fibers can cause asbestosis and other diseases (1) after a latency of 10--40 years from initial exposure to onset of illness. Asbestos still is used in the United States (approximately 2,200 metric tons in 2006) in certain products manufactured domestically (2). In addition, an undocumented amount of asbestos continues to be imported in products manufactured elsewhere, and a substantial amount of asbestos remains in existing buildings and manufactured products. An estimated 1.3 million construction and general industry workers in the United States potentially are exposed to asbestos each year, mainly from manipulation of asbestos during renovation or demolition activities (3). Also, although asbestos ore is no longer mined in the United States (4), some U.S. mine workers might remain at risk for exposure to asbestos contained in other ores. To characterize trends in premature mortality attributed to asbestosis in the United States, CDC analyzed annual underlying cause-of-death data for 1968--2005, the most recent years for which data were available.* This report describes the results of that analysis, which indicated that annual years of potential life lost before age 65 years (YPLL) attributed to asbestosis increased 64%, from an average of 146.0 YPLL per year during 1968--1972 to 239.6 per year during 2001--2005 (regression trend for the 5-year moving average, p<0.001), for an overall total of 7,267 YPLL (mean per decedent: 6.2) over the entire period. These results demonstrate that asbestosis-attributable YPLL continue to occur and that efforts to prevent, track, and eliminate asbestosis need to be maintained.

For this analysis, decedents for whom the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code for asbestosis was listed as the underlying cause of death were identified from 1968--2005 mortality data.? Given the occupational etiology and long latency of asbestosis, analysis was restricted to deaths of persons aged >25 years. Standard industry and occupation information that met CDC quality criteria was available for decedents in 26 states during the 1985--1999 period.§ After 1999, funds for coding industry and occupation were not available, and coding at the state level ceased. The number of states reporting data in any particular year varied from 16 to 22, and the number of years of data available for any one state varied from 2 to 15. Industry and occupation were classified according to two U.S. Census Bureau coding systems.¶ YPLL and mean YPLL were calculated using 5-year age groups and standard methodology (5). A simple linear regression model was used for time-trend analysis of YPLL (using 5-year moving averages).

During 1968--2005, asbestosis was identified as the underlying cause of death for 9,024 decedents. Of these, 1,169 (13.0%) were aged 25--64 years, including one (0.1%) decedent aged 25--34 years; 17 (1.5%) aged 35--44 years; 165 (14.1%) aged 45--54 years; and 986 (84.3%) aged 55--64 years, accounting for 7,267 YPLL (mean per decedent: 6.2). The majority of asbestosis decedents aged 25--64 years were male (1,125 [96.2%]) and white (1,064 [91.0%]), accounting for 7,038 (96.8%) and 6,470 (89.0%) YPLL, respectively (Table 1).

YPLL attributed to asbestosis deaths increased 64%, from an average of 146.0 per year during 1968--1972 to 239.6 per year during 2001--2005 (regression trend, p<0.001). YPLL varied annually, from a low of 69 (mean per decedent: 8.6) in 1973 to a high of 306 (mean per decedent: 5.9) in 1990 (Figure). The rate varied annually, from a low of 0.73 per million in 1973 to a high of 2.78 per million in 1970. During 1968--2005, asbestosis deaths in Texas (85; 577 YPLL), Pennsylvania (99; 544 YPLL), New Jersey (90; 527 YPLL), and California (76; 468 YPLL) accounted for 29.9% of all decedents aged 25--64 years with asbestosis as the underlying cause of death and 29.1% of the total YPLL attributed to asbestosis (Table 1).

Industry and occupation information was available for 153 (28.8%) of the 531 decedents aged 25--64 years with asbestosis as the underlying cause of death during 1985--1999 (Table 2). Of 54 industries reported, the greatest YPLL were in construction (244 YPLL; mean per decedent: 5.7); ship and boat building and repairing (41; mean per decedent: 5.9); and military (41; mean per decedent: 5.9). Of 59 occupations reported, the greatest YPLL were for insulation workers (112; mean per decedent: 5.9); managers and administrators, not elsewhere classified (43; mean per decedent: 7.2); and plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters (42; mean per decedent: 4.7).

Editorial Note:
YPLL are a measure of premature mortality that emphasizes deaths occurring among younger persons during their most productive years (5,6). Persons dying before age 65 years are considered as having years of potential work tenure lost, on the assumption that these are a worker's most productive years. During 1968--2005, asbestosis was identified as the underlying cause of death for 1,169 decedents aged 25--64 years, accounting for 7,267 YPLL. Overall, a mean of 6.2 YPLL per decedent was attributed to asbestosis during 1968--2005, indicating that, on average, decedents aged 25--64 years with asbestosis listed as the underlying cause of death died at age 58 years. Despite the decline in asbestos use and reduced exposures, the findings described in this report indicate that asbestosis-attributable YPLL continue to occur. Because asbestosis mortality typically manifests several decades after initial exposure to asbestos, much of the continuing YPLL likely is attributed to exposures experienced decades ago. During 1970--2004, the annual number of asbestosis-related deaths (based on the analysis of asbestosis deaths coded on the entity axis in multiple cause-of-death files**) in the United States increased nearly 17-fold, from 89 (age-adjusted death rate: 0.6 per million persons aged >15 years) in 1970 to 1,493 (6.9) in 2000, and then declined slightly to 1,470 (6.3) in 2004, for an overall total of 25,413 asbestosis deaths over the entire period (7). This slight decline in the age-adjusted death rate was attributed to several factors, including reduced use of asbestos and improved control of asbestos exposure (8,9). Beginning several decades ago, increased awareness of the health consequences of asbestos exposure stimulated voluntary and regulatory actions by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (8,9).

Available data (for 153 decedents) indicated that the greatest industry-specific YPLL values were associated with work in construction and ship and boat building and repairing, which is consistent with documented past industry-specific asbestos exposures (1). Likewise, two of the three occupations with the greatest YPLL values, insulation workers and plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, are well known to have been associated with asbestos exposures.

The findings in this report are subject to at least six limitations. First, this report used a death certificate--based definition of asbestosis as the underlying cause of death. Because some deaths from asbestosis might have been attributed to other diseases (e.g., idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis) instead of to asbestosis, the findings in this report likely underestimate deaths and YPLL attributable to asbestosis. Second, complete work histories are not listed on death certificates, and the relevance of the reported usual industry and occupation to actual hazardous exposures could not be verified. Although no studies have examined the accuracy of usual industry and occupation information on death certificates specifically for asbestosis decedents, research suggests a generally good agreement of this information compared with that from other sources (10). Third, coded information on usual industry and occupation were available for decedents in only 26 states, accounting for 28.8% of all U.S. asbestosis decedents during 1985--1999. Thus, these data might not be nationally representative for 1985--1999. Fourth, the state issuing a death certificate is not always the state in which the decedent's asbestos exposure occurred. Fifth, ICD cause-of-death codes used in this analysis changed twice during 1968--2005. However, these revisions likely did not introduce bias or affect the temporal trend in asbestosis deaths (7). Finally, YPLL, as calculated, do not account for the full burden of asbestosis. During the period for which CDC analyzed U.S. death data, approximately 87% of the deaths with asbestosis listed as the underlying cause of death occurred in persons aged >65 years. Moreover, although YPLL do reflect premature mortality during the most productive years of life, YPLL do not account for all reduced quality of life or work years lost attributed to disability from asbestosis. Persons with asbestosis can live for many years with severely limited lung function and few treatment options, leading to inability to work.

The continuing occurrence of cases of asbestos in younger persons (asbestosis-attributable YPLL) underscores the need for persistent asbestosis prevention and elimination efforts. Effective primary prevention is critical because asbestos-related diseases can develop or progress even after occupational exposure ends. New York, NY, October 30, 2008 -- Preventing oral cancer is the word on the street in New York City, as scores of people are spotting advertisements that are running on hundreds of city buses, inside and out. Oral cancer, which kills twice as many Americans as cervical cancer, is now especially on the rise in young people, women and non-smokers partly due to what is widely suspected to be an oral sex related increase in exposure to the human papilloma virus (HPV). The study is being conducted at The Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, a small animal teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Tuxedo Park, NY and Philadelphia, PA - March 14 -- The Onyx & Breezy Foundation has announced a gift to The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. The gift will cover the expense of follow-up care for 12 dogs that are currently enrolled in the School's cancer vaccine study.

"Thanks to this generous gift, more participants in our lymphoma cancer vaccine clinical trial will be able to return for follow-up care," said Dr. Karin Sorenmo, chief of oncology at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital. "This means that we can capture all the data that is needed for the study while pet owners are helped financially."

Prior gifts to The Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital from the Foundation have been a respirator for their ICU department and a mast cell tumor research study.

Dr. Sorenmo treated Breezy, who had mast cell tumors. "Thanks to Dr. Sorenmo, Breezy lived another 2 years, of quality life, after other vets gave her only 6 weeks to live," said Wanda Shefts. "We are glad that this project will help owners of dogs in remission from lymphoma and help advance Dr. Sorenmo's work on the cancer vaccine.

Dr. Sorenmo stated that she was encouraged by the results and she is hoping that this is just the beginning of more trials that can benefit dogs and ultimately help people. Thanks to this study, a number of the participating dogs are now cancer free. The researchers now estimate that they are within two years of testing the vaccine on humans. Without the dogs, they would be more than a decade away.

"We have a tremendous amount of respect for the work they do at the Hospital and we are glad to be able to fund another project for them", said Mark Shefts.

BEING HEART-SMART WITH RA
People with rheumatoid arthritis understandably focus on caring for their joints. But their most serious health risk involves their heart.

Compared to the general population, rheumatoid arthritis patients have a significantly increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and a shorter life expectancy.

RA AND YOUR HEART: THE RISKS
Here are some of the findings from recent studies about the link between rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease:

* Heart attacks are twice as common among women with rheumatoid arthritis as among those without the disease.
* Atherosclerosis ("hardening of the arteries") starts early and progresses more rapidly in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
* Carotid artery blockages (a risk factor for stroke) are three times more common in people with rheumatoid arthritis than in people without the disease (44% vs. 15%).
* Cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, occur about 10 years earlier in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
* Mortality is higher among rheumatoid arthritis patients after a first heart attack.
* Blood vessel damage is often already apparent at the time of rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis.
* Heart attacks in rheumatoid arthritis patients are more likely to be silent or to occur without the typical symptoms, and they more often result in sudden cardiac death.
* Congestive heart failure (weakening of the heart's pumping ability) is more common among people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Researchers have identified several links between rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation is believed to be the most important of these.

THE ROLE OF INFLAMMATION IN ATHEROSCLEROSIS
Cardiologists now understand that inflammation plays a crucial role in the onset of atherosclerosis. They believe that an injury to the inner lining of the arteries (the endothelium) triggers an immune response, sending immune system cells rushing to repair the damage.

THE EFFECTS OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATION ON YOUR ARTERIES
But in chronic inflammatory states such as rheumatoid arthritis, the immune response doesn't shut off after the injury heals. The accumulating immune system cells attract deposits of cholesterol, blood platelets, cellular debris, and calcium, which clump together to form plaque.

As plaque deposits grow, they restrict blood flow through the artery. If the plaque ruptures, clots can break away and travel to the heart or brain, where they may cause a heart attack or a stroke.

BOTTOM LINE ADVICE: WHAT CAN YOU DO TO STAY HEART-SMART EVEN IF YOU HAVE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
The relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and the heart is complex, and rheumatologists still have a great deal to learn about how to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease among people who have rheumatoid arthritis.

For now, it's important to do everything possible to reduce the traditional risk factors for heart disease and stroke:
smoking, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Getting regular exercise and losing extra pounds (even a 5-10% weight reduction is beneficial) will help your joints as well as your heart. Monitor your blood pressure and have your cholesterol levels checked regularly.

Also, ask your physician about the possibility of taking a low-dose aspirin each day to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

In addition, the cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins--atorvastatin (Lipitor) and others--not only help the heart, but also have modest beneficial effects on rheumatoid arthritis-related inflammation. If your doctor hasn't already suggested a statin drug for your heart health, you might ask about it.

Coverage Applies to New Screening Test Used by Dentists

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn.-- May 13, 2008 --UnitedHealthcare Specialty Benefits now provides coverage under all of its insured dental plans for a new oral cancer screening test for potential abnormalities inside the mouth, including premalignant lesions and oral cancer.

The test, which uses light-contrast technology, can improve a dentist's ability to identify, evaluate and monitor lesions that are difficult to see using visual inspection under conventional lighting.

"Evidence shows that dentists can serve as a valuable 'early warning' system for patients who have signs of oral cancer," said Dr. Michael Weitzner, vice president of clinical product development for UnitedHealthcare Specialty Benefits dental unit.

More than 34,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. The death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high - not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development. Results of Brodmann Area 25 Deep Brain Stimulation Pilot Study Offer Hope for Patients with Severe Depression

Study findings presented today at American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting

ST. PAUL, Minn.-- May 05, 2008 --St. Jude Medical, Inc. (NYSE:STJ) today announced pilot study results from the first multi-center study investigating deep brain stimulation (DBS) of Brodmann Area 25 for major depressive disorder.

Results of the study, which were presented today at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) meeting in Washington, D.C., found that 6 months after the procedure, 56 percent of the patients experienced at least a 40 percent decrease in depressive symptoms. Patient's symptoms were measured using a standardized test called the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression.

Results were presented by Sidney Kennedy, M.D., psychiatrist-in-chief with the University Health Network in Toronto. "Severe depression destroys a person's ability to be productive and have a normal quality of life," said Dr. Kennedy. "The results from this study are very promising, and we are hopeful that our research will lead to a therapy that can help these patients."

Prior to beginning the study, all patients were classified as having severe depression after multiple treatments - such as medications, psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy - had failed to provide sustained relief from depression. Each study patient had tried a minimum of 12 depression medications over his or her lifetime.

DBS was targeted at an area of the brain known as Brodmann Area 25, which appears to become overactive when people are profoundly sad and depressed. Conducted at three leading Canadian academic medical centers, the study expands and supports the groundbreaking research of Helen Mayberg, M.D., and Andres Lozano, M.D., which was published in Neuron in March 2005.

On average, the 20 study participants had suffered from depression for more than 20 years; they were disabled and unable to work at the time of enrollment. The study also found that:

    * At their most recent psychiatric evaluation, 78 percent of the patients experienced at least a 40 percent decrease in depressive symptoms.
    * Three of the study patients are considered to be in remission.
    * Eight patients have re-engaged in life activities such as work, school, relationships and travel.

In the study, DBS was delivered through the St. Jude Medical Libra® Deep Brain Stimulation System, which delivers mild electrical current from a device implanted near the collarbone; the device is connected to small electrical leads placed at specific targets in the brain.

Under the agreement, 3M will donate its patented toll-like receptor (TLR) immune response modifier compounds.

WHY: Hypertension affects approximately 73 million people in the United States alone. High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke and causes an estimated one in eight deaths worldwide. Each incremental increase of 20 mmHg in systolic blood pressure or 10 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure above normal levels is associated with a two-fold increase in death rates from stroke, coronary heart disease and other vascular causes.

The data are being discussed and evaluated at the 49th annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) in Atlanta. According to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, lead institution for the study, the data show a "distinct survival benefit" with lower doses of the dexamethasone combined with REVLIMID. S. The data showed REVLIMID, an oral medication from Celgene, plus low-dose dexamethasone improves one year survival compared to the standard high-dose dexamethasone, 96% to 88%. Over two years the benefit continues with an 87% survival rate for low-dose dexamethasone compared to a 75% survival rate for high-dose dexamethasone. While lowering the dose of the steroid also lowers some immediate measures of response that is offset by better, long-term disease control.

"Lowering the doses of the steroid dexamethasone with REVLIMID gives us a new paradigm of treatment," said Brian G.M. Durie, M.D., chairman and co-founder of the International Myeloma Foundation. "When we combine REVLIMID with lower dose dexamethasone, we are seeing reduced side effects so patients stay on the drug longer, and, above all, significant survival benefits. These are the outcomes that patients and physicians find most important, and take precedence over the traditional ways we have used to evaluate new therapies."

Last April the independent committee monitoring the trial found the preliminary results so compelling that the trial was stopped and all patients in the trial were moved to lower dose dexamethasone. Because of the overwhelming positive response to REVLIMID plus low-dose dexamethasone in the ECOG study, a trial from the other large cancer cooperative, SWOG, was also stopped prematurely. This trial compared REVLIMID plus high-dose dexamethasone to dexamethasone alone. Because this SWOG trial stopped early, and because nearly half of the patients on the dexamethasone-alone-arm of the study crossed over to the REVLIMID-plus-dexamethasone-arm of the study within the first year, overall impressions regarding survival could be misleading.

According to Dr. Durie: "We do not want patients confused by statistics. In fact, the SWOG trial concluded that REVLIMID with low-dose dexamethasone is among the most active up-front combination regimens against myeloma. These results demonstrate that REVLIMID plus dexamethasone is definitely better than dexamethasone alone, and is an excellent treatment in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma."

The International Myeloma Foundation concludes that overall findings presented at this conference about multiple myeloma in all ages, and across all categories of patients (newly diagnosed, relapsed, patients proceeding to bone marrow transplants and so on) is positive and encouraging and represents major advances in the treatment of blood cancers beginning with myeloma.

FDA Approves Medtronic's TalentT Abdominal Stent Graft for Repairing Aortic Aneurysms

Innovative Medical Device Enables Minimally-Invasive Treatment of Potentially Fatal Condition

MINNEAPOLIS--April 16, 2008--Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT), today announced approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use of the TalentT Abdominal Stent Graft on the CoilTrac Delivery System, an innovative medical device that expands patient access to a minimally-invasive treatment option for abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Present in an estimated 1.2 million people and responsible for approximately 15,000 annual deaths in the United States, an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a dangerous bulge or weakening of the body's main artery that can rupture with fatal consequences if left untreated. Ruptured AAAs are currently the 10th leading cause of death among U.S. men over age 55, with fewer than 20 percent of people surviving a rupture. But early detection through painless ultrasound screening and minimally invasive treatment with a technique called endovascular repair (EVAR) have historically shown a significant improvement in the survival rate for patients of all ages.

"This important milestone demonstrates Medtronic's leadership and commitment to the field of aortic repair," said Katie Szyman, vice president and general manager of the Endovascular Innovations business at Medtronic. "Endovascular interventionalists in the United States now have access to the broadest portfolio of stent grafts for the treatment of their AAA patients. The Talent Abdominal System significantly increases the number of AAA patients who can benefit from minimally-invasive repair. As an alternative to open surgical repair, this device will save the lives of many people affected by abdominal aortic aneurysmal disease."

Expanding Indication for EVAR

The Talent Abdominal Stent Graft System makes endovascular repair (EVAR) accessible to an additional 20 percent of AAA patients, because of its unique proximal aortic neck length requirement of only 10 mm. Consisting of a woven polyester membrane supported by a tubular metal lattice, the device is specifically indicated for endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms with or without iliac involvement. The stent graft is available in diameters of up to 36 mm, as well as flared and tapered iliac limbs of 8 mm to 24 mm.

With a 12-year history of strong clinical performance including more than 45,000 implants worldwide, the Talent Abdominal Stent Graft is designed to offer broad patient applicability, suprarenal fixation and positioning accuracy. The stent graft features radiopaque markers for visual guidance during deployment and follow up, and the delivery system uses a single-step release mechanism for smooth deployment and a coiled rod for enhanced trackability and flexibility.

"The Talent Abdominal Stent Graft has provided excellent patient outcomes in clinical practice and in clinical study," said Dr. Michael L. Marin, professor of Vascular Surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. "In my own experience, with more than 750 successful implants using the Talent System, the performance of this stent graft has been very consistent, and its safety and efficacy have been well characterized through the results of our own clinical trial."

Advantages Over Open Repair

The Medtronic-sponsored clinical study of the Talent Abdominal Stent Graft System enrolled 166 patients at 13 medical centers between February 2002 and April 2003. All 166 patients received a Talent Abdominal Stent Graft; their outcomes were compared to those of 243 patients from the Society of Vascular Surgery (SVS) Surgical Control Group at 30 days and one year post-implant. Dr. Frank Criado, director of Union Memorial Hospital's Endovascular Program in Baltimore, was the principal investigator for the study.

The study demonstrated that the Talent Abdominal Stent Graft well exceeded the SVS Control in freedom from major adverse events at 30 days, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups: Talent, 89.2%; SVS Control, 44.0%. Although patients receiving the Talent Abdominal Stent Graft were older and had a higher baseline rate of co-morbidities, at 30 days post-implant they experienced lower rates of major adverse events compared with subjects treated with open surgery. Importantly, there were no aneurysm ruptures and no conversions to open surgery in the Talent group up to 12 months after device implantation.

"As Talent is already the leading stent graft for endovascular treatment of AAAs outside the United States, its approval by the FDA is a most welcome and exciting development," Dr. Criado said. "AAA patients in this country can now enjoy the benefits of this device, which has been shown in the pivotal clinical trial to have distinct advantages over standard surgical treatment."

In previous studies, EVAR has been shown to be an effective therapy for AAA, with fewer postoperative complications and shorter recovery times than open surgical repair. Results from a U.S. study published recently in The New England Journal of Medicine (Jan. 31, 2008), for example, indicate that perioperative mortality was significantly lower after EVAR than after open repair: 1.2 percent vs. 4.8 percent - a fourfold difference. Similarly, in a landmark study conducted in the United Kingdom and published in The Lancet (Sept. 4, 2004), the 30-day mortality rate for EVAR patients was 1.7 percent compared to 4.7 percent for patients who underwent open repair - a nearly threefold difference.

Although AAAs typically produce no symptoms until rupturing, they can be detected through a simple, painless and inexpensive ultrasound screening, which is offered free-of-charge to new Medicare beneficiaries. If detected before rupturing, AAAs with diameters of more than twice the size of the normal infrarenal aorta are typically treated with either open surgical repair or endovascular repair (EVAR). In contrast to open surgical repair, EVAR involves a minimally invasive procedure in which a stent graft is threaded through the femoral artery in a compressed state on a delivery system and expanded inside the aorta at the site of the aneurysm. Once in place, the stent graft creates a new path for blood flow, reducing pressure on the aneurysm.

Normal "Senior Moments," Or Alzheimer's Disease?

Are you concerned about your memory? New York, NY  - April 9, 2008 -- The recent passing of vibrant actor Charlton Heston from late-stage Alzheimer's disease makes us all stop and think about our own mortality. In particular, it is natural to wonder about your own memory, and what is 'normal' when it comes to memory loss as a result of aging.

Occasional memory lapses, such as forgetting why you walked into a room or having difficulty recalling a person's name, become more common as we approach our 50s and 60s. It's comforting to know that this minor forgetfulness is a normal sign of aging, not a sign of dementia.

But other types of memory loss, such as forgetting appointments or becoming momentarily disoriented in a familiar place, may indicate mild cognitive impairment.

In the most serious form of memory impairment -Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia -- people often find themselves disoriented in time and place and unable to name common objects or recognize once-familiar people.

Here are examples of the types of memory problems common in normal age-related forgetfulness, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia.

Memory Condition -- Normal Age-Related Forgetfulness:
    Sometimes misplaces keys, eyeglasses, or other items.
    Momentarily forgets an acquaintance's name.
    Occasionally has to "search" for a word.
    Occasionally forgets to run an errand.
    May forget an event from the distant past.
    When driving, may momentarily forget where to turn. Quickly orients self.
    Jokes about memory loss.

Memory Condition -- Mild Cognitive Impairment:
    Frequently misplaces items.
    Frequently forgets people's names and is slow to recall them.
    Finding words becomes more difficult.
    Begins to forget important events and appointments.
    May forget more recent events or newly learned information.
    May temporarily become lost more often.
    May have trouble understanding and following a map.
    Worries about memory loss. Family and friends notice the lapses.

Memory Condition -Alzheimer's Disease and Other Forms of Dementia:
    Forgets what an item is used for or puts it in an inappropriate place.
    May not remember knowing a person.
    Begins to lose language skills. May withdraw from social interaction.
    Loses sense of time. Doesn't know what day it is.
    Short-term memory is seriously impaired. Has difficulty learning and remembering new information.
    Becomes easily disoriented or lost in familiar places, sometimes for hours.
    May have little or no awareness of cognitive problems.

If you are concerned about memory loss in yourself or a loved one, there can be a variety of underlying causes too which can be treated, for example, temporary memory loss due to depression, or certain prescription or over the counter medications. You should discuss such concerns with your doctor.

There are a number of tests your doctor can administer right in the office which can help determine whether it is cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's Sisease or another form of dementia.
