Closing Spring Semester Announcements

Due to technological problems, we haven't been able to publish updates to this website during the spring semester. Anyway, since the last update, the following has happened in the wonderful world of FSA:

1. On Friday, February 22, we had a crêpe dinner at Crêpes du Jour in Mt. Washington.

2. On Friday, March 7, we had a screening of the documentary "Chain of Love" at the Charles Commons Multipurpose Room.

3. In late March and early April, we competed in the co-ed intramural football league as the "FSA Mercenaries," with Rodell as our motivational captain and Glenn as our amazing coach.

4. From the evening of Friday, April 18, to the morning of Saturday, April 19, we had a team that walked around the Upper Quad as part of Relay For Life 2008.

5. On Sunday, April 20, we hosted Filipino Cultural Night at the Glass Pavilion.

6. On Friday, May 9, we held our annual senior farewell dinner at Lin's China Buffet in White Marsh. We also elected our 2008-2009 board:

Inaugural Spring Semester Announcements

1. There'll be a general body meeting on Wednesday, February 13, at 8:00 p.m. at the Student Involvement Center. (It's the room of the F. Ross Jones Building of the Mattin Center with large glass windows and blue couches inside.) If you don't have anything else scheduled for that date and time, please attend this meeting! We'll discuss our plans for the semester - FSA won't go into hibernation during the spring semester for once!

2. On the night of Friday, February 22, we'll have an FSA ice skating outing. Please join us! More details will come later.

3. We tentatively have a documentary screening scheduled for the evening of Friday, March 7. Again, more details will come later.

4. Mark this on your calendars! On Sunday, April 20, we'll have Filipino Cultural Night at the Glass Pavilion. Filipino Cultural Night will be a main topic of the general body meeting.

A Post-Thanksgiving / Pre-Christmas Update

1. The potluck held on the evening of Sunday, November 18 at the Charles Commons kitchen went pretty well. In addition to discussing for what we are thankful and chowing away on the food we brought, we surprised Jerr with a birthday cake and some presents! Huzzah.

2. This year's D6 semiformal was on the evening of Saturday, December 8, and it was hosted by the Filipino students of University of Maryland - College Park. The Filipino students of Johns Hopkins University, however, were too busy writing papers and studying for exams to attend.

3. We had another potluck at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 14 at Jerr's apartment; in addition, we had a hilariously bizarre gift exchange.

4. As of Saturday, December 15, half of FSA is done with finals. The other half is still studying for finals and writing papers.

5. There'll be a semester-opening potluck sometime in late January or early February.

Culture Show 2007 Videos / Potluck Tomorrow

From Camera #1 (i.e., Clarisa's camera, handled by one of her friends), this is a video of most of our Culture Show 2007 performance. What's missing are (a) Amethyst's introduction to the entire number, (b) the entrance of the slow-traditional tinikling dancers, and (c) the right half of the stage during both slow-traditional (so Amethyst and Jorge are cut out) and fast-traditional tinikling (so Amethyst and Jason are cut out):

Meanwhile, the fast-traditional tinikling and modern tinikling weren't recorded with Camera #2 because of technical problems. Le sigh.

After a Culture Show dress rehearsal that was held at Shriver Hall earlier this evening, it's not an exaggeration to say that FSA is poised to rock the house at the 20th Annual Culture Show, which will be held at Shriver Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10.

A Few Culture Show Updates

1. As previously mentioned, this year's Culture Show will be on the evening of Saturday, November 10. Please invite your friends to watch us perform!

2. There'll be two mandatory rehearsals at Shriver Hall for all groups performing in Culture Show, including FSA. The first one will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, and the second one will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7.

3. Thanks to everyone who attended the FSA Culture Show dance practices on Sunday, October 14, and Sunday, October 21! The next dance practice for all FSA members performing in Culture Show will be at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 28 at the Great Hall, although Amethyst and Nian will be contacting some members individually to review segments of the dance before then.

FSA Night Out

To keep cyberspace informed of FSA's antics, somewhere between 12 and 15 FSA members ate dinner at Nini's Asian Restaurant in Glen Burnie, Maryland, on Friday, September 28. (This is the "FSA night out" mentioned in Phil's meeting minutes in the previous posting on this website.) FYI, Nini's Restaurant is run by Filipinos and includes Filipino cuisine on its menu - with that information in mind, it's not surprising that eating dinner there was a pretty delicious experience.

FSA Minutes 9/18/07

Hello Kiddos,

Location: Charles Common MPR

Attendees: All the cool kids!

At this meeting we briefly covered some of the major FSA events for the upcoming year, which all either involve eating food, or eating food while dancing on sticks. Niiiiiccee!

Culture Show/ Filipino Cultural Night: For the time being it is unknown whether or not Culture Show will be in the fall or the spring. However, we are still gearing up to hold practices this semester, starting the week of 9/30. If culture show doesn't pop off this semester, Filipino Cultural Night will! If Culture Show does happen in the fall, FCN will be in the spring. We are once again performing a Tinkling/Singkil sequence. We are in the planning steps but apparently a hip-hop twist on the traditional dances is where we might be headed.

Inter Asian Council: A tentative performance for their art show. Either 10/11 or 10/15. Ask Nian.

September 28th- FSA night out! We will be dining at a Filipino Restaurant. Festivities start at 7, but be on the lookout for updates. The night is young!

Culture Block Party- This will be October 5t, and we will be having fishballs. Great Success!!!

Also, we briefly discussed the Filipino Documentary Screening in Spring.

Documentary Showing

* Sometime in February or March
* Ramona Diaz, a filmmaker who produced a documentary on Imelda Marcos, is in the finishing stages of a documentary about Filipino teachers in the Baltimore public school system.
* We're considering holding a screening her documentary on campus (perhaps in a lecture room - but not the auditorium - in Hodson, or one of the rooms in Mattin) with a question-and-answer session afterwards.
* The Inter-Asian Council (IAC) is looking for cultural documentaries and movies from the different Asian student organizations.
* Nian can make arrangements for the documentary screening through the IAC.
* Jeremy will e-mail an article about the documentary published in the Urbanite; FSA members can read it and tell him afterwards whether they're interested in screening Ms. Diaz's documentary. If there's enough interest, he'll try to contact Ms. Diaz.

A Few Updates

1. To kick off the 2007-2008 academic year, the FSA officers and a few other FSA members met on Friday, September 7, to outline the upcoming year's events. (See the "Current officers" link on the left-hand side of the website to view this year's officers.)

2. FSA isn't complete without food and gossip. The annual start-of-the-year potluck was held at Rodell's apartment on Friday, September 14. There was a large turnout, and the entrees ran out quickly.

3. There's a general FSA meeting coming up! It'll be at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, at the Charles Commons Multipurpose Room (MPR).

FSA is dancing with SLAM (Stop LOOK at ME) on Saturday, November 12, 2005 at 8pm as part of the annual Culture Show part of the week-long Culture Fest. We're towards the end just in case you're pressed for time.

FIND Conference

The D6 FIND Conference will take place from November 4th - 6th. D6 is a network of all the Filipino Clubs of all of the local universities- It's a great way to meet new people and learn more about Filipino culture in general.

The website for this is www.d6find.org. Check it out.

I highly recommend that you go.

We would all crash in a room at the Hyatt, it would be $100 a night, but split up shouldn't cost more than like $20 per person.

FSA Potluck

Hey everyone,

Thanks for everyone who showed up and those who cooked. Good times. I hope everyone had fun, because that is just the beginning. =)

Anywho, the first culture show practive is Tuesday, Sept 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 in the Great Hall (in Levering). We will be doing Singkil as our traditional dance, and Tinikling as usual with "Bebot" by Black Eyed Peas as our jam. For the singkil, I will need two girls and two guys to volunteer. If no one volunteers, I'll be picking. So please volunteer. Email me at rachellepinlac@yahoo.com if you want to be part of singkil. Alrighty, hope to see everyone on tuesday.

"All groups should arrive 15min prior to serving time to prepare decorations and provide smooth transitions. Each group is expected to provide the decorations for their tables. This would include re-usable cultural items that the SAC can fund. Please keep it simple but colorful for easy clean up. In order to make this event as cultural as possible, each group is asked to prepare a CD with ~20min of music to be played at the event by a DJ. "

In addition, there is an OMSA retreat on Saturday, SEPTEMBER 24, 9-12:30. I need someone to go (I can't make it!)- an OMSA rep. OMSA (Office of Multicultural Student Affairs) meetings take place about once every 2 months or something, and they don't take that long, so anyone who's interested please please please please please please please please please let me know ASAP.

At this meeting, they will discuss CultureFest, which we need to get information about!!
