Amorium Team Members in Denizli

Chris Lightfoot and Murat Şen were joined in Denizli for the 31st Annual Archaeological Symposium by Oğuz Koçyiğit and Hüseyin Yaman. Also in attendance to hear the Amorıum presentation on Thursday, May 28 was this year’s representative Gülay Şahin and new team member Güven Deniz Apaydın. Special thanks go to Bahadır Duman and Barış Yener, who took us on a special tour of Laodiceia on Friday, May 29.

Amorium Receives Award

Project Director Chris Lightfoot is pleased to announce that the Adelaide and Milton De Groot Fund at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is generously supporting Amorium’s 2009 excavation season.

Plans for this year’s campaign are well advanced. Team members are advised to look out for further announcements and instructions on the website and by email.

The season will take place from June 29 until August 10, 2009. Visitors are welcome during the excavations, which will be open every day except Tuesdays.

"Excavations at Amorium and the Byzantine Dark Ages" at the CUNY Graduate Center

Professor Eric Ivison is to give an illustrated lecture entitled "Excavations at Amorium and the Byzantine Dark Ages" at the CUNY Graduate Center on April 24, 2009 at 2:30 pm.

The lecture will take place in the Special Collections Reading Room (C196.05) and is sponsored by the Mina Rees Library.

The 31st Annual Archaeological Symposium

This year's symposium will take place between May 25 and 29 and will be hosted by Pamukkale University, Denizli. Included in the program will be a presentation in Turkish on the Amorium Excavations 2008. Details will be posted in due course.

Tribute to Prof. Angeliki Laiou

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the recent death of Prof. Laiou in Boston, Mass.

We offer sincere condolences on behalf of the Amorium Excavations Project to all her family and friends.

Prof. Laiou's death is a great loss to Byzantine studies and to the Amorium Project in particular. Prof. Laiou (shown here with Chris Lightfoot and her long-time friend and colleague Cécille Morrisson at the Dumbarton Oaks Spring Symposium last May) was a staunch supporter of the Amorium Project and took a keen interest in the progress of the excavations, recognizing their importance for Byzantine archaeology and history. She will be greatly missed.

The Oriental Institute (University of Chicago) and the Late Antiquity and Byzantium Workshop are co-sponsoring a talk by Dr. Chris Lightfoot (Director, Amorium Excavations Project), "Recent Discoveries at the Byzantine City of Amorium."
