New campaign encourages Ontario residents to vacation at home

Ontarians are being encouraged to holiday at home this year by a multi-pronged campaign designed to stimulate the economy and create new jobs. The campaign was launched by tourism minister Jim Bradley using funds from the $22 million allocated to tourism in the McGuinty government’s $190 million economic stimulus package – which includes $4.5 million in new funding for Ontario festivals and events, bringing more conventions to the province, and a multi-media campaign to boost domestic tourism that includes billboards, web-based promotions and cinema and television ads. “Getting more Ontarians travelling in Ontario is the best way to increase tourism in the province this year,” says Bradley. “Our campaign is designed to help expand festivals and events and make it easier to plan your Ontario holiday, and encouraging Ontarians to explore the province.” Fifty-seven festivals and events across the province will be receiving programming funding of up to $75,000, and marketing funding up to $18,750 from the “Celebrate Ontario” initiative for total funding of as much as $93,750 each. This is a one-time funding initiative to support the growth of existing festivals and events. An on-line component is also included (after March 19) in the campaign at http://www.ontariotravel.net/, where visitors can order customized printed brochures and sign up to receive e-mails with specific vacation suggestions.

Lighting the Christmas Tree

Santa Claus Parade

Toady was the Santa Claus parade and it was a great event, with perfect weather. I walked with the OVERT team again this year. This picture is the Trinity United Church float, “Project Away in a Manger”. Trinity is raising money to supply an African village with animals to help make them self sufficient. It looks like we may have enough raised to supply 2 villages at this time!

Well I've been busy recently starting up a hot dog cart in downtown Bowmanville. I'm open for lunch from 11am to 2pm on Silver St, just off King St, at Durham Regional Glass & Mirror 46 King St W. I have hot dogs and sausages on the menu with drinks and chips. Stop by and say hello!

ORBIS Canada

Today I visited the ORBIS eye hospital at Toronto airport. They've converted a DC-10 airliner into a flying eye hospital.

"Nearly 37 million people throughout the world are blind. 28 million don't have to be. 90% of them live in the developing world.
ORBIS Canada exists to eliminate avoidable blindness and restore sight in these countries. We work in partnership with local health professionals and members of the community to improve the quality of eye care available for those whose need is the greatest. A cure is often simple and inexpensive, but in the world’s poorest countries even the most basic medical help is often out of reach for those who need it the most. "

ORBIS has set up a web page for me to collect online donations towards preventing blindness, and I'll be accepting tips at my hot dog cart to go toward the work ORBIS does.

Prospect St Bridge Reopens

Where were you in 1960? Were you in Bowmanville High? Were you there before or since? Perhaps you were born in 1960? (I was in England, not in school yet). This is a pennant I just received from a neighbor in town who sells great Bowmanville memorabilia on EBay. Check out the online marketplace link for more 'Bowmanville' items for sale. I'm looking for a good home for the pennant if anyone knows of one...

Passing of Angus

Well I was saddened to hear that Angus the elephant passed away this weekend, so this weeks picture must be of him. I took this in August when we took our neice and nephew to the zoo for the afternoon.
Final preparations were being made to send Angus back to Africa to live out the rest of his life in retirement, but I believe Angus knew this and decided he wanted to stay in Bowmanville, around the people and animals that had been his friends for so long.

CPR Holiday Train comes to Bowmanville

Tonight the CPR Holiday Train stopped at Scugog St and Wellington for a half hour of fun and entertainment, as well as providing a means for lots of goodies to be collected for the local food banks. I was amazed at the number of people that came out, there were literally thousands of people there!
"Two brightly decorated Holiday Trains – one in Canada, the other in the U.S. Northeast and Midwest - will again be collecting food and money and raising awareness for local food banks. Each train will be decorated with hundreds of thousands of LED Christmas lights to help focus on this important initiative. Since its launch in 1999, the Holiday Train has collected 378 tons of food and more than $1.9 million CDN for North American food banks. " Click the link for more info.

Christmas Tree Lighting

Tonight we were at the Christmas tree lighting downtown. Lots of people braved the cool night (cold actually with the wind blowing) and we had a great time singing songs and stamping our feet.

Snowy day Downtown

We've had snow twice this past week, probably 6" in total... But it's going back up to +11 deg C tomorrow so it will all melt. It got us into the Christmas spirit for the Santa Claus parade last weekend and now we seem to be gettting into winter big time. It didn't stop people from walking around downtown this afternoon to get some shopping done. Here we are on King St. looking east at the Temperance St. intersection.

Remembrance Service

A Service of Remembrance was held at the Town Square this morning. This is my second year attending this service and I was again very impressed with the number of people, especially the school children, that came out for the service. It was a very moving ceremony and a fitting tribute to the men and women who served, and continue to serve our country. Lest We Forget.

Wind Storm this afternoon

My ultralight didn't make it thru the windstorm very well! But nothing that can't be fixed for flying next summer! The wind came in from behind, about 40 mph, then a large gust caused the struts holding the right wing up to bend. The wings are hinged in the middle so just fell to the ground with no damage to them, just the two struts to replace. This is a Nomad motorglider built in the early 80's. It cruises at 45 mph, the empty weight is about 150 lbs and it's powered by a 3 cylinder radial engine of 25 hp. I have it based at a field just north of Bowmanville - watch the skies above next summer!

Apple Festival

This afternoon I went downtown to the Apple Festival - what a crowd of people! Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and having a good time. I met a couple of our friends and wandered along the main street with them, stopping to talk to others we knew along the way. There were lots of 'crafty' people selling their wares and lots of candy apples, hot dogs and apple pie to be had! Later on some clouds decided to dampen the street, but it didn't seem to dampen spirits in any way, just gave an excuse to head into the stores and tents to check out the merchandise. All in all I had a great time and will be back next year (possibly with a booth from our church). I didn't ride the elephant so I still have that to do too!
