Final Play-in Concert at COOK HALL at MUN Music School, June 6th

As announced at the rehearsal on Saturday the concert this coming weekend is at Memorial's Music school in Cook Hall, the main recital hall. There was a typo on the website that said it was at another location. Could you please come for tuning at 9:30 so we can start the program on time at 10am. Please have performers wear a dark bottom with a colorful shirt.

A reminder to all STEP families that this Saturday's group class day will be spent a bit differently:

In celebration of STEP's 25th anniversary, there has been a piece written by local composer Jennifer O'Neill which will be performed by the entire program together on the Final Group concert on June 6. There will be parts even for the youngest beginners (as long as they know how to play their rhythms on an open string).The piece is called "Silver Strings on a Rocky Shore."

In order to put this piece together, the "group" class this weekend will indeed be a unique group experience where the whole program will assemble in the Choral Rm to rehearse Silver Strings! IMPORTANT!: ONLY THE FIDDLE CLASSES AND THE BABY CLASS WILL GO AHEAD AT ITS REGULARLY SCHEDULED TIME- THE SILVER STRINGS REHEARSAL IS THE GROUP CLASS FOR EVERYONE ELSE THAT DAY!

If your child is in a late Bk. 2 or more advanced group class , including YV (or if you have received an actual written part for this piece from your group class teacher), please come to the Choral Rm at MUN music school at 10:00 to be tuned and ready to start rehearsing at 10:25 on the dot!

If your child is in pre-twinkles, Twinkles, or Bk. 1 class, please come to the Instrumental Rm. at 11:00 to be tuned and ready to rehearse with Nancy Case-Oates by 11:15 . Nancy will then bring this younger set of students to join the rest of the program in the Choral Rm. to rehearse the piece all together.

Memorial's School of Music welcome's back alumni Layla Roberts and Chris Anstey. Chris is now playing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Layla is engaged in freelance and teaching work in the Winnipeg area. Their concert in the Music at Memorial concert series is called "Melodies, Masks and Martinu". They are accompanied by pianist, Krista Vincent.

Performance Opportunity for all!!

Dear Suzuki Families,

Whenever possible STEP tries to reach out to the community in form of free concerts. Often these concerts are at nursing homes or day cares but other venues have hosted us as well.

On May 9th we've been invited to play for the residents of Hoyles Home. I am writing to recruit performers. This is a solo opportunity rather than a group performance. Anyone is welcome to participate. Please check with your teacher regarding which piece to play.

What a great opportunity to show off your review practice and your beautiful tone!!!!

STEP teacher Christina Smith nominated for award

One of STEP's founders and teachers, Christina Smith, has been nominated for a prestigious award - the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council "Arts Educator of the Year" award. Competing against her are writer/educator Robin Grant and percussionist Rob Power. We think she has an exellent chance of winning.

The award will be presented at the 24^th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) Awards Show and Gala. It's a lovely event and members who would like to attend can purchase tickets from the Arts and Culture Centre box office. The Gala is on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Reid Theatre in St. John's. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Cultural Assistance Plan for Emergencies (CAPE Fund).

Please don't forget the Avalon Mall Play-In on Saturday, April 18th, beginning 11:00 (for tune-up) to play at 11:30 for about an hour. Come to the lower level of the Avalon Mall by Laura Secord; wearing white tops and black pants or skirts. This is one of our most popular recruiting and promotional events. There'll be sweet treats for the players!

Public Concert at Avalon Mall March 21

For many years STEP has offered a spring public concert at the Avalon Mall. This year it will be on the first official day of spring, March 21. Hopefully our music will help bring the flowers!

CELLOS!!!!- the Mall will not provide chairs, please bring your own! thanks!

ATTIRE - please come dressed in black and white. This will present a coherent presentation and performers will be identifiable. It doesn't have to be dressy black and white - simply clean cut please.

We ask that cases and bags be stored between the pillars at the back of our area rather than along store windows. This reduces clutter, tripping possibilities and its easier to keep an eye on everything.

Congratulations to the STEP Senior Orchestra, directed by Sean Conway, who placed first in their Kiwanis Class today with a mark of 90 for their performance of "Two Welsh Airs" by Elliot Del Borgo and Percy Fletcher's "Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance". The group was invited to play in the Instrumental Group Rose Bowl, and was awarded the Susan Quinn award as well..

The orchestra consists of STEP students and string players from the community ages 10-16 who are playing at a Suzuki Book 3-5 level. Their hard work and playing has made us very proud. Here are the videos of their performances, or follow the links below.

What is a Masterclass, anyway?

A Masterclass is an opportunity to watch a master teacher teach students individually. It's a fantastic way to get new ideas, learn about a piece which you will be playing soon, and be inspired both by the teacher and the students who are playing.

How were they chosen?

Our Master Teacher for the day, Ms. Nancy Dahn, requested that teachers put forward names of their students who could play a *polished* piece from mid book four or higher. The teachers submitted names of their students. Preference was given to students who had not performed in prior masterclasses. If any slots were left, names would be drawn first from those students who played two years ago, then from those who played last year.

Nancy Dahn is Professor of Violin and Viola at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland and Co-Artistic Director of the Tuckamore Festival.

Hailed as an artist "so genuinely interesting to listen to one forgets how good her technique is"(The Sunday Herald), violinist Nancy Dahn has created an international career as one half of Duo Concertante with pianist/husband Timothy Steeves. Critics have described her performances as "vigorous, passionate and red-blooded"(CBC's Sound Advice) and praised the "great mastery of her playing... her singing and poignant sound... She never sacrifices beauty for the sake of virtuosity" (La Scena Musicale).

As a soloist, Nancy Dahn has performed concerti by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bach, Mozart, Saint-Saens, Part, Lou Harrison, and Andrew MacDonald with orchestras in Canada and the United States. She recently presented the world premiere of Alice Ho's Double Concerto, written for Duo Concertante with the assistance of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and in 2007 performed Marjan Mozetich's concerto Affairs of the Heart.

Dahn received her training at the New England Conservatory of Music with Masuko Ushioda, the Juilliard School with Glenn Dicterow, and at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she received a doctorate in violin performance with Donald Weilerstein. She has participated in summer festivals such as the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Colorado Music Festival, the Britten Pears Festival, the Taos School of Music and the Tanglewood Music Centre. A winner of numerous competitions, including the concerto competitions of the Cleveland Institute and New England Conservatory, Dahn was a finalist in the Louise McMahon International Competition.

STEP presents The Young Virtuosi in London

Are you arguing with your kid about practicing? Is your (or their) enthusiasm flagging? Are you looking for inspiration for your kid?

Take advantage of the BIg Kid Effect! Bring your aspiring violinist to the STEP Young Virtuosi performance and presentation!

On Saturday, Feb. 21st, at 10:15 in the Choral Room, the wonderful young musicians in STEP's most senior group class, the Young Virtuosi, will be sharing their music, their pictures, and their stories about their exciting trip to London, England. There will be music, a slideshow, and your kid will get a chance to play with the big kids, talk to them, and interact with them!

Refreshments will be served at 10:45. Masterclasses will follow, at 11:00.

The "Big Kid Effect"

One of the most powerful things about a good Suzuki program is the inspiration provided to the younger kids by the older ones. Admiration for an older child is one of the strongest motivators for younger students. The students in our most advanced group class, the Young Virtuosi, have just returned from a tour in London England. This group not only gave five excellent performances, but showed themselves to be wonderful, generous, warm-hearted, kind, caring, responsible individuals who represented their province and country admirably and with great maturity. You will not find better role models for your children anywhere. To give you an opportunity to inspire your kid, STEP is holding

MOTIVATION DAY

It will feature exciting and motivating activities for all! Come see the future! Group Class schedule will change for the day. (PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR CLASSROOM AND TIME CHANGES)

9:00 - 10:15 - Pre-Twinkle, Book One and Reading classes; Julia's fiddle classes, cello classes

10:15 - All students and parents will meet in the Choral Room for an exciting presentation by the STEP Young Virtuosi, our senior group class, who have just returned from London, England! This time will feature a short performance of classical and fiddle music, a short slide show, and chance to interact with the group and ask them questions. Bring your instrument - everyone will get to play with the Young Virtuosi Orchestra.

10:45 - refreshments

11:00 - 1:30 Master Classes, with Nancy Dahn. This event will replace Group Class for Late Book 2, book 3, 4, 5, and viola students this week. In a master class, a student plays and a master teacher works with them on their piece and their playing - it is a public lesson. One of the basic tenets of Suzuki's philosophy is the value of observing others' lessons. STEP teachers will be bringing their Book 2 and up classes to watch. Ms. Dahn is violin professor at Memorial and plays with the internationally famous Duo Concertante (http://www.duoconcertante.com/home.html) She will be working with students in mid-Book Four and up. Book One students, and their parents, are encouraged to attend as well.

CLASS CHANGES

Sean's Pre-Twinkle Class (Comet Tails) will join Jennifer's class (Twinkling Stars) in the Instrumental Room at 9:00 this week.

Both of Julia's fiddle classes (Val Ryan and Walter MacIsaac) will meet at 9:00 in the Room 2017.

Senior Cellos will join the Beginner Class at 9:00 am in the Seminar room

Evelyn's Early Childhood class (Stardust) will finish at 10:15

Sean's Brahms class will finish at 10:15

All 10:30 classes (Boccherini, Vivaldi, and Veracini) plus the Viola class will meet at 10:15 in the Choral Room, and attend the Masterclasses afterwards from 11:00 to 12:00. This is your class for this week. Class will officially end at 12:00 noon but please feel free to stay longer.

Parent class will start at 12:00 in order to give parents an opportunity to watch the Masterclasses for an hour.

STEP fiddlers will meet for a Kiwanis run-through (1/2 hour) at 12:30 in the Instrumental Room.

On Sunday February 15, STEP is holding not one, but *two* solo recitals! The first is at 1:00 pm and the second at 2:30. These will be exciting, inspiring and motivating concerts - everyone has practiced hard for their Kiwanis performances. Check out who is playing when and come cheer for your friends! Refreshments will be served after each concert. Best of all - it's FREE!

If you are a performer, be sure to arrive 15 minutes before the concert starts to get tuned. Because there are so many performers it is important that we all be prompt. Don't forget to bring a plate of treats for after. Check below to see which concert you are playing in, and ask your teacher when your rehearsal time is on Saturday.

Senior Group Class' London Tour Highlights

On January 4, ten of our senior students from STEP's most advanced group class got on a plane and embarked on an exciting adventure to London, England to perform and to absorb a new culture. They played 6 concerts in 6 days including two school concerts, two concerts in churches in Notting Hill, and one concert for the UK Wolf Conservation Trust. This last was exciting as we were taught to safely approach the socialized wolves and actually stroke them! The sixth concert was perhaps the most exciting because of its unexpected nature: one of Helen Brunner's (our host) students' mothers heard us play in a rehearsal and was so enthralled with these young people, she invited the group to play at her lawyer husband's 50th birthday party at the Lanesborough Hotel (swanky!) on the Friday night. It was a paid private concert after which we were offered the possibility of playing on a recital series that our new lawyer friend runs for his international array of clients. The children were billeted with families in Helen's studio: one pair lived for the week across from Paul McCartney's house, and another pair lived right beside Orlando Bloom! Quite glamorous! Their playing improved each time they performed and they reached glorious new heights of ability. We were all very proud and happy for them!

Helen sent a letter to us a few days after our departure saying that people were still talking about our students' performance at the final concert at St. Peter's church in Notting Hill. Christina's leading of the group in the fiddle tunes were especially well-received as most of the Londoners had never heard authentic Newfoundland traditional music before. We arrived home exhausted (23 hours of travelling due to Air Canada delays! and an impromptu concert at Heathrow airport to boot) but extremely happy for the experience. Thanks to the whole program for your support for STEP's senior group class!

Simply Strings is a Benefit Concert for St. David's Church featuring STEP faculty as well as some of the top string performers in Newfoundland.

The Atlantic String Quartet - Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra's resident string quartet. Alison Black, Nancy Case-Oates (STEP faculty), Scott Chancey(STEP faculty), and Theo Weber.
Dr. Nathan Cook - MUN cello professor and one/third of the Hot Earth Ensemble.

Dear STEP families,

It's that time of year again - we're all bracing for The Big Storm, could be any day now! For the remainder of the winter, listen to CBC radio's Weekend Arts Magazine for notice of group class cancellation due to weather. Angela Antle, the host, is a STEP parent and is happy to make sure our notices get out. Thanks Angela! Group classes will go ahead unless you hear otherwise on the Weekend Arts Magazine; the STEP website will have a notice as well, but the first news will be on the radio. Weekend Arts Magazine is broadcast live, 640 on the AM dial. It's on air from 6-9:30 am Saturdays and Sundays.

ATTN Fiddle, Cello and Veracini students!!

I trust you all had musical and relaxing holidays. Our group classes are starting again this weekend. Our Young Virtuosi group is off in England playing wonderfully and have taken a few of our teachers with them. We have been unable to find teachers to replace Christina's or Julia's classes this weekend (they of course are irreplaceable!) so we have to postpone their classes until January 24th. A note will be sent with specific locations.

Julia Bowdring's classes - Walter McIsaac and Val Ryan Fiddle classes - POSTPONED to Jan 24

Christina Smith's CELLO classes POSTPONED! to Jan 24. STEP fiddlers will proceed with Evelyn standing in.

Heather Kao has been kind enough to stand in for Jennifer Johnson's classes and will teach Twinkling Stars; the Vivaldi and Veracini classes will be combined together in the Instrumental Room.
