the bad news is... i can't possible keep up with all of the book reviews you're submitting!! so this is what we're going to do... once a week, i'm going to open a post for comments on the book review blog for YOU to leave comments on about the books YOU'RE reading and finishing during the weeks.

so give it a try, and let everyone in cyberspace know what you're reading! when you review, you are sharing your thoughts and helping others make informed choices in their book selection... and other readers do appreciate the input!

... last summer we had almost 300 readers signed-up for the teen and adult reading program, and as of yesterday afternoon we have signed-up 150 readers! That's great that so many of you are ready to tell everyone

Summer Reading 2008

Okay, the adult summer reading program starts
j u n e 2 , 2 0 0 8

to participate, all you have to do is:

visit the top floor desk and get registered
with registering, you will receive a brochure with some of the top summer reads as well as a punch card for $1.00 off your library fines--existing or future fines!

and the program is this:

for every book you read (or listen to), you will recieve a weekly drawing slip, as well as a grand prize drawing entry form!
we will draw prizes on Monday mornings, so you'll have to have your weekly drawing slips in the drawing box by Saturday, 6pm
you can enter for the grand prize(s) of your choice until August 16, and winners will be announced/posted on August 20

learning on the road

Each spring, my family and I go to

Yellowstone National Park...

Because we are "locals," we like to be there before all of the crowds get there later in the season. However, if you ask me, the beauty of the park is the tourists who are from all over the world, seeing what many of us take for granted for the very first time!

Yesterday, I met one of the most interesting tourist on this trip... Chaucer. Well, I didn't actually meet him because this wire-hair fox terrier was napping, but I met his traveling companions, Carmen and Robyn who are driving him from the southwest all the way back to New Hampshire! The best thing about Chaucer is that he's got a website that chronicles his travels, gives advice for dogs traveling with their people and great information for teachers to use in their classrooms.

So, why is this on the library blog? Well, you can easily check out (or buy if you must) a book about Yellowstone or anywhere, but to really experience something you could put the book down and get out there! You never know who you might meet...

summer reading is right around the corner, and i'm wondering what would make it better for YOU!

YOU are the person i plan programs for, and YOU are the person who chooses to (or not to) participate in the programs... so what do YOU think?

tell me what you've liked best in the last two years, and tell me what you really didn't like! or you can even give me suggestions to make this program a program you'd participate in this year.

also, what about events... summer is busy, would you find time to come to the library for a library event this summer?

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2008 Idaho Falls Reads... Fahrenheit 451 program!

Very special thanks go to Dr. Scott Samuelson, BYU-I who lead us in a very enlightening discussion about the author, the book and the issues that go along with Fahrenheit 451.

Also, appreciation to Dr. Margaret Johnson, ISU, for the excellent discussion about censorship throughout history.

I apologize to everyone who didn't get a book, especially after all of the publicity that was generated by the program. But I do want to encourage you to remember that we will do this program again next March, and that with your active participation the program will fulfill the reason we do the program: connecting people through great literature!

So, I have one last thing to say: read and discover great books for yourself! And for now we say goodbye to our friend, Guy Montag!

the power of television...

It appears that Millie Montag has a point-- if you want reach the people, you need to be on the television... especially in the evening!

Since my "little" interview on Tuesday evening, we have been hoppin' over here at the library. We ran out of Fahrenheit 451 books about 3pm yesterday, as well as signing up more than 30 people with new library cards! And I had a lot of very unhappy people in the library seeking books last night and this morning! I apologize for those who want a book, and now can't get one*. However, I'm very pleased that we got people excited about the books.

I also apologize to those folks who missed the events in our program. The purpose of Idaho Falls Reads... is to connect people through great literature with programs and discussion. Now that you all have your books, I really hope that you will come to the events we have left this month:

Tonight (March 27) we have the Banned Books presentation & discussion at 7pm
book discussion group tomorrow (March 28) at 10am
book discussion group Monday (March 31) at 7pm

I want to, again, thank you for your participation and all of the advice given to improve the program for next year.

censored, challenged and banned books

Plan to join us tonight for an insightful discussion on censorship lead by Margaret Johnson.

Professor Johnson she currently is the Associate Professor of English and Assistant Dean of Arts & Sciences at ISU-Pocatello. She works in the fields of rhetoric and composition, postmodern fiction, and film studies.

Her work has appeared in the following publications: Quarterly Review of Film and Video, Film-Philosophy Quarterly, Popular Culture in Libraries, and The Encyclopedia of Novels into Film. Professor Johnsons also wrote the Instructor’s Manual for The Shape of Reason, 3rd edition.

As much as I would love to help each and everyone of you find the most perfect book, I can't. You know, they make me go home every now and then!

But there's a pretty good alternative, and it's called Next Reads. This is a service we offer you that emails you a list of new and upcoming books in the genres of your choice! How great is that?!

It's super easy to use too, just choose from the a list of categories and receive monthly newsletters listing featured books with synopsis information and links right into the IFPL catalog. From there you can check for availability or place holds on the books you are interested in. You can sign up for any one or more, or even all the lists at the same time and you can change your preferences at any time.

Please remember to join us this week for a round table discussion about Fahrenheit 451 with special guest speaker, Dr. Scott Samuelson, down from Rexberg and BYU-I.

About Dr. Samuelson...

...he has taught in the BYU-I English Department since 1982, after teaching at the Air Force Academy. Earned BA and MA at BYU(1971, 1972) and PhD from University of California, Irvine. Also teaches a course in book arts, paints watercolor, and prints poetry on his letter press under the imprint Fat Matter Press.

Dr. Samuelson welcomes questions and comments about the book, as well as favorite quotes. He requests that you also bring your copy of Fahrenheit 451 so we can dig deeper into the text.

This is a discussion group you will not want to miss!

last night was the showing of François Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451 at the Paramount Triplex

what a great film! it was slightly different from the book; but that's always the case, right?! and i thought i'd share few of my observations...

beginning credits were read to us, rather than having us "read" them for ourselves

julie christie played both clarisse and mrs montag

the 1966's mindview of the future was interesting

the hitler/nazi-ishness of the firemen was a little upsetting

the love people had for books--they were willing to die for them, or committ the books to memory and keep the books alive!

Saturday we kicked-off the program with great success!

we passed out 100 books and had snacks--yes, we had food in the library! but it was a lot of fun seeing all of our reading friends and visiting over some fresh veggies!

if you haven't picked up your free copy of Fahrenheit 451, you can pick up your copy while we have them... but hurry, this is a HOT item!
