I was talking to a friend of mine who is looking for a new pad. After hearing what he wanted to be around and what type of space I sent him to the WA Knight lofts right on Adams Street downtown. Downtown is more fun that it has ever been and I have always been able to find cool people and tons to do. Now it seems like there is way more than there ever was. These are excellent lofts in the heart of Downtown. You have Chew beneath you for one thing, and the mighty mighty St. Johns is a one minute walk downhill. I know, I used to live there. Go check them out if you are in the market. They usually don't have many, if any, vacancies and it looks like they have five open now. The neighbors are cool. Some great folks live there. I just heared from my buddy that they have specials right now so call and ask!

Speaking of Market. There are also a couple of lofts available for rent in Historic Springfield. The 1926 built collegiate gothic Public school 24 has a couple lofts available. Reasonable rents ($800) gets you great space, lots of light through huge windows, vaulted ceilings, exposed brick everywhere, lots of cool stuff with onsite gated parking.

There are too many advantages to living in the urban core to mention, check any page of this blog for proof. I will say both my Mom and my wife and I have lived in both of these buildings and we love them both. You can be inspired by living in historic loft conversion. Just saying.

This is one of those rare but great times where reading my blog really pays off. Finally you say.

This time it pays off in FREE MARTINIS. I kid you not. Tonight as part of the most amazing concert festicrawl Conmoto (what is that?), Three Olives Vodka is featuring FREE MARTINIS upstairs of the Burrito Gallery from 11pm to 1am. No entry upstairs until after 11. This will be a lot of fun. The room will feature local art and some of the coolest people in Jax, along with the great clean taste of Three Olives vodka.

Speaking of produce, here are some cheesy highlights this Saturday!

Sweet Grass Dairy:
Greenhill: Double cream cows milk cheese pasteurized and made in the style of a brie with a creamy buttery flavor. A holiday baked Brie with the addition of a fruit conserve is truly a simple pleasure.

Fresh Chevre HDP: A smooth creamy goats milk cheese on the style of a cream or ricotta cheese blended with Herbs De Provence a true creamy delight. An excellent accompaniment for holiday dishes.

Georgia Gouda: This raw cows milk cheese is full of subtle Gouda richness made and aged in the traditional way. This cheese will make a macaroni and cheese you will never forget.

Eden: A raw goats milk cheese with a rind that is hand rubbed in rosemary, basil and grape seed oil resulting in an intoxicating flavor. The herbal aroma is reminiscent of of the woods in which our goats graze. Try this with some berried cranberry sauce, yummy.

Cyprus: A raw cows milk cheese with a blend of sundried tomatoes, olives, basil, garlic and sea salt. A full flavored cheese that is a pasta salad delight.

Dante: Made in the style of a ricotta salada this pasteurized goats milk cheese has the full flavor of a feta style cheese. A spinach salad with a light vinaigrette, walnuts, bacon and Dante is a special treat.

Asher Blue: Along with all of our award winning cheeses, Asher Blue just won a Bronze metal at the World Cheese Awards held in the Canary Islands. This blue has an excellent flavor and finish. The delicate blue veining is full of flavor and the creamy texture crumbles easily for salads or as a topper for steaks and burgers.

Myrtlewood: A raw cow's milk cheese aged over three months. The natural rind is washed in a mixture of wax myrtle leaves, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and sea salt. Magnolia Farms: you can always count on magnolia farms csa farm for certified naturally grown local produce picked fresh from our field...this week we have red russian kale , blk tuscan kale(bring it on chefs!) ed japanese long RADISH, ARUGULA AND BABY BEET SALAD MIX...COLLARDS, BROCOLI RAAB, DAIKON RADISH READY FOR MISO SOUP!

Down to Earth Farms: Down to Earth will have delicious salad mix, Red russian and dino kale, turnips, pac choi, arugula, cilantro, dill and some vegetable plants for your garden such as broccoli and cilantro.

Reeds Groves: Reed's Groves and Produce will have OUR OWN CITRUS, coming from OUR OWN groves and being washed and waxed according to state law in OUR OWN packing house. This fruit will include: Sugar Navels, Red Navels (blood oranges), the unique REED tangerine, ambersweet tangeloes, Flame Red grapefruit, and of course the Pink Pummello. Along with that we will have Central Florida Tomatoes, kirby cucumbers, bell pepper, eggplant and several other vegetables coming form OUR cousins farm in Webster Florida

HouseKeeping for Artists!

We are all having such a blast that I think it is important to review your traffic maps and rules.

RAM has ONE WAY traffic. Enter on Riverside Avenue, exit through Red Cross. No cars allowed on site after 9:30am. PACK UP AT 4 pm!

Don't go get your car until you are packed up. Don't get on site then park and pack. Its rude and clogs up the whole works. No cars are allowed on the lot until 4:15pm. Pack up first, then go get your car. We cannot continue to block Riverside Avenue and you are not allowed to enter through Red Cross. No exceptions!

At email time we do have Red Cross parking for food vendors and handicapped tags. Things may change. Remain flexible.

Do not bring more than one car on the lot at a time. I realize that shared booths have multiple cars. Stagger your arrival time.

PER OUR GUIDELINES: VENDORS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING DOGS OR PETS.

NO HAWKING: Make the design of your booth and your goods/art be the enticement. DO NOT CALL PEOPLE OVER TO YOUR BOOTH. They will see you and they will come. Especially if your booth looks inviting and or appetizing.

No plastic bags unless they are biodegradable. Kings Kountry Farms has some available if you need some. Our final market months are important. We run a tight ship and we expect you to too.

Keep your tents within your area. Your area is defined by the little silver discs. I have been letting folks slide when it is close but am going to be more rigid on this rule. If you are next to a berm that already sticks out into the flow of traffic you may come out some. But chairs and other things into the path will not work. You will be asked to move it. Again, the better the display the less likely you will need to be all out in peoples way. People will come into your lovely booth. You just have to make it lovely.

Bring enough change to last the day. Change is not provided at water tables, the information booth, or from electrical fees! Bring 1s and 5s because people will always pay with 20s!

It is your market, so help us get the word out. I will have extra rack cards for you to distribute if you need any but remember to remind friends and co-workers that you are at RAM this weekend. If everyone gets 10 new people a week that is more than 1500 new folks. As your market, start looking for ways to improve your sales. This is not our job, we provide a well run award winning market for peanuts (most people pay $36 or less).

Also, we are COMPLETELY BOOKED most of the market days left. If you are an approved artist and would like Brandy to know that you would like to be on the list in case of cancellations, send her an email with the date you would like to participate. Only applicable to completely sold out markets. There is no guarantee of any cancellations.

Think of this as your investment in the community not the other way around.

The Human Volcano is back! Dallas The Fire Guy will explode his giant fireball every hour on the hour. This week will be invaded by aborigines. Just returned from Australia, Eric Wendoff is making a special appearance in native aborigine costume and will play his amazing array of didgeridoos. We also have another command performance Joe Watts, nationally regarded jazz vocalist, who among other credits was music director for former Supreme Mary Wilson on her European tour.

Plus magic, juggling, balloons, clowns, and over a dozen different musicians. Is RAM a great place or what!?

Our headliner on the River Stage is Martha's Trouble, a high energy pop/folk rock/alternative band that is coming to RAM as part of its national concert tour. The band won BillBoard Critics Top 10's for 2008 and was named USA Today Online's Top Holiday Album.

Over 16 years in the planning, the Riverside Arts Market is a weekly extravaganza that draws 10,000 to 20,000 people every Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The focus of the Riverside Arts Market is artistic expression, and the 160 artists who display their works present a wide array of artwork from oil paintings and sculpture to hand-made gifts. With over one football field's area of covered space beneath the bridge, the artists can exhibit without having to worry about rain or the hot sun, since it is an all-weather market. The Riverside Arts Market is free and has over 1,000 free parking spaces next to it.

RAM also has a huge fresh produce section in its Farmer's Market, and many visitors come every week to select their locally grown fruit and vegetables. Fresh tomatoes, pumpkins, citrus, corn, squash and goat cheese have been among the biggest hits in recent weeks. There are also food vendors who sell ready-to-eat meals ranging from shrimp creole to barbeque to beignets, which can be eaten in the riverfront dining area while listening to free music.

With it wide array of artwork and dozens of talented street performers and musicians, this spectacular riverfront artists' market has attracted over 300,000 people since its Grand Opening on Saturday, April 4, 2009. The Riverside Arts Market Combines a Salute to Our Local Heroes with an Acrobatic Circus on November 7th.

The Riverside Arts Market (RAM) will pay a special "Salute to Our Local Heroes" on November 7th, as part of the City of Jacksonville's celebration of "A Week of Valor." With the City's events focusing mainly on honoring our brave military, RAM will join the celebration with a tribute to the valor of our local firemen and policemen who serve our community.

One of the stars of the show will be a 1926 antique LaFrance Hook and Ladder antique fire engine on display. It will be joined by the city's largest modern fire truck, a big red battle station in which kids will enjoy getting to sit in the rear cab. At the nearby riverfront, the Jacksonville Fire Department's impressive fire boat, "Marine One," will be on display for viewers and will perform demonstrations of its high firing water cannons.

Veteran firemen will be on the scene to discuss the history of firefighting in Jacksonville, and there will be a book signing for the Jacksonville Historical Society's award-winning book, The Great Fire of 1901. There will also be displays of historic fire-related memorabilia from the Jacksonville Fire Museum and an extensive showcase of antique uniforms, equipment, badges and historical pieces from our local police.

In addition to the colorful fire equipment, the Riverside Arts Market will also take on a circus-like atmosphere on November 7th with special free performances by several renowned touring acts.

Rocco the Acrobat has been applauded around the United States as one of this country's top street performers. His high energy act includes acrobatics, hand balance, unicycling, juggling, and comedy. His feats of strength and agility are highlighted by his gravity-defying stunts of Chinese pole balancing.

Another nationally popular act that will appear at RAM is "The Rick, Rocket and Daisy Show". This fast-paced comedy, juggling, trained dog, unicycle and music show stars "Rocket" and "Daisy," two remarkable circus dogs that put the WOW into "bowwow." Their owner Rick Stratton is a master showman and does most of the juggling in the show. This is one of the all-time favorite acts at Key West's Sunset Festival.

Fresh from a critically acclaimed European tour are Aimee German & Jenny Sargent, a.k.a. The Leroy Sisters, performing excerpts from their comedy act, Canarsie Suite. They were called "Mutant Clown Geniuses" by a reviewer in Prague and "Physically the funniest act I have seen for a long time - I have not laughed so much for weeks!" in England. This amazing proto-vaudevillian duo will dance and sing and clown their way into your heart. Not to mention the acrobatic gorilla!

And there is more! David Ferman, the 16-year-old national champion juggler will juggle fire, knives, and just about anything else he can get his hands on. The Fabulous Clown Family (Pop-Pop, Floopie, Dottie, and Lemon Verbena) will be back at RAM with their usual clown tricks. In addition, there will be balloon artists, belly dancers, and eight different musical groups performing in the market. So the new under(actually above)ground show will be at 229 Hogan. Some of the city's best and brightest artists will be showing and use this space as studio/gallery space. I see this quickly becoming the indoor version of the Haydon Burns alley which is actually going to have a great show again tonight.

If you don't go out to this art walk NEVER TALK TO ME ABOUT THE CULTURE PROBLEMS OF THIS CITY AGAIN. Seriously. It won't end well.

Walk-up signs will be available for all classes at a cost of $20 per class - Six week session sign-ups will also be available for a cost of $80 (this provides a $40 savings for those who want to come each week) Students will bring their own materials and the Art League will supply the easels - For walk ups we want to have class materials available for students who were not planning on taking a class so we have created a watercolor package which will include a set of paints 3 brushes and a sheet of high quality watercolor paper as well as a backing board for a cost of $10. The student can obviously keep those materials for future classes/use. These classes would be open to all ages and Art League/RAM oversight maintained.

The Art League is located at a table off to the side near the river or on the north side of the Market.

We have a ton going on this weekend! Magician tournaments. World class entertainment, new farms, returning farms and friends, new artists, new food vendors, and an all around great time. Please make it down to RAM this weekend and you'll see once again, its never the same market twice.

What would it be like if the world's biggest musicians came to Jacksonville and played a free concert for all? A reenactment of sorts is doing just that in Treaty Oak Park this Saturday at 4pm!

Go back in time (for free!) and find out what all that marching is about!

In 1908 Sousa played concerts in Treaty Oak and the Jacksonville Historical Society is bringing them back with the First Coast Wind Ensemble!

This weekend I will not be at RAM. I will be at the Project for Public Spaces workshop on How to Create Successful Markets. I have a new function on my phone and I hope to broadcast live from it. Stand by for more information on that. I am clearing tech and legal hurdles but feel I can make the most of my trip by inviting you along with me. We will see.

Maybe it is not time to chime in? What the heck. This is my opinion alone and has nothing to do with any jobs, projects, or partnerships. (as always)

I do not have a personal problem with advertising on bus shelters.

I understand the slippery slope and I think it can be shored up and tight. And create shelter. I don't feel shelter ads are the real issue either. We have the worse ads on bus benches right now, where is the outrage? I feel this galvanized and focused effort to stop transit advertising should first make sure we do not have any current violations of the sign ordinance. Big or small. With all the lawyers and influential opponents of ads on bus shelters, surely we can knock out all illegal signs in no time. Right? What about all these terrible ugly house for sale signs, or Stein Marts disgusting 12 hour sale signs vomited all over Roosevelt? Or signs on all four sides of a building like times union. Or huge signs like WW Gay 3 or 4 signs above their warehouses and the electric pepsi orb by the stadium. Where is the outrage? These don't even cover anybody while they wait for public transit and reduce our city's carbon footprint.

I feel bus shelters with advertisements are aesthetically more attractive than wet and cold (or unshaded) people. I also think historically there has been some really cool and interesting out of house advertising. Especially turn of the century to 1950s or so. Check some out below. Celebrate history with a little capitalism? That may be a stretch but I do feel like we should tighten up our enforcement of current laws before we throw out an idea that brings a better quality of life for the family that uses public transportation.
