Nightshade Manor, located at 1301 Heistan Place just off Bellevue, offers spooky tours through film-quality sets with high-tech special effects. Its website promises “a high-startle, low-gore haunted experience.” The house is open for tours every Friday through Sunday night through the end of the month, and it’s also open on Halloween night. Admission is $10 with two cans of food or $12 without. A portion of proceeds benefit the Memphis Food Bank.

Justin Timberlake confirms lengthy arena tour

Justin Timberlake (tickets music) is set to kick off a 34-city, North American arena tour Jan. 8 in San Diego, with fellow pop singer Pink holding down the opening slot. The shocking news is Timberlake has skipped Memphis, his own home town in the tour! What the hell was he thinking? Go to his MySpace page and comment on it!

The outing--dubbed the FutureSex/LoveShow tour--follows Timberlake's August SexyBack Live Listening Sessions tour, during which he played clubs to advance his new album. Now he will return to arenas accompanied by a 14-piece band and back-up dancers who will perform in the round, according to his publicist.

"With the creative ideas that I've come up with, I think it's going to be an amazing show, definitely," Timberlake said in a recent teleconference. "The trick for me is to find a way to bring the vibe that we've created, myself and my band, with the club show to an arena. That's the trick. So that's definitely, you know, what I'm going after. Whether we can pull it off or not obviously remains to be seen."

On-sale dates will be announced locally in each market and dates for the complete worldwide tour will be announced shortly. A variety of premium seating packages will be offered for the tour.

Timberlake is touring behind his triple-platinum album "FutureSex/LoveSounds" and his No. 1 single "SexyBack." Co-written by Timberlake, the album recently produced a second single, "My Love," featuring T.I.

'Proud moment' at Austin Texas Music Fest for Memphis, Goner

It's safe to say that Memphis made a lasting impression at the 20th annual South by Southwest Music Conference.

The Bluff City was well represented in Austin, Texas, where more than 1,300 bands landed to play at official showcases, free parties and private events over five days, ending Sunday. Goner, Shattered and Contaminated Records hosted shows at Austin's Beerland; Goner Records was awarded a coveted "official" showcase on Thursday evening, while Shattered and Contaminated Records hosted free parties Friday and Saturday, respectively. "Cathy Ross from SXSW stopped into the store when she was visiting Memphis and asked if we could do a mini-Goner Fest as a showcase in Austin," said Zac Ives, co-owner with Eric Friedl of the Goner record label and store. Goner had hosted two four-day music festivals in Midtown Memphis in 2005.

"Turns out it's a big deal," said Friedl. "We were honored!"

Once an event mostly for industry professionals scouting new talent, since its inception in 1987 the SXSW conference has warped into a sort of rock and roll spring break. Along with the seven bands playing Beerland, a dive bar decorated with Christmas lights and arcade games, Memphis fans were heavily represented in the audience.

"The whole Memphis/Goner/ Contaminated/Shattered family of people had a real great presence at the festival," says Friedl. "When Scott Rogers (of Friedl's band The Dutchmasters) said, 'Let's hear it for Memphis' from the stage and got a big cheer, I realized how much people love our town and the music from our town. Proud moment."

Memphian Christine Gladney, a veteran of SXSW with two previous trips, said, "People loved the Memphis bands and the Memphis label bands."

The Goner showcase kicked off with King Louie doing his one-man-band show, playing guitar while sitting behind a drum kit using the kick drum, occasionally stopping to ring a cowbell. He was followed by Memphis favorite Harlan T. Bobo backed by Paul Buchignani on drums and Brandon Robertson on bass.

Bobo's set was followed by The Dutchmasters and the Ives-fronted Final Solutions. The night was capped off by sets from Leather Uppers, Atlanta's Carbonas, and finally, the band Head from Seattle.

"HEAD! They've always been one of my favorite bands," Ives said. "Eric and I began plotting ways to get them to Goner Fest a while back."

While commonly known as an industry event, the Goner owners mostly connected with fans at SXSW.

"We're more into the music than the industry," Friedl said. "At the end of the day, they can listen to their money. We'll listen to great music. I think (SXSW's) too big to really get seen by bigwigs who can write the checks. But you can definitely start a buzz. Everyone who goes back to their own community afterwards will be talking. That's publicity you can't buy, but they try."
Bobo did sell records at the event. And, Friedl said, "Someone just e-mailed about getting Harlan some Florida dates after seeing him at the showcase, so that's definitely good."

"Suicide Squad" by Starbox Pictures has Strong Memphis Roots

Robby Grant of Vending Machine and Mouserocket has signed on with Starbox Pictures to score their upcoming feature film Suicide Squad, which begins production June 15th in Los Angeles, California. Filmmakers Adam Hatley and Glenn Hopper tapped Grant because "we knew Robby's creepy lo-fi funk sound would be the perfect accompaniment for our project - a creepy, lo-fi psychological thriller," Hopper said.

Suicide Squad is filming in Los Angeles, but the pic has strong Memphis roots -- Hopper and Hatley are Memphis natives who've been fans of Robby's since his high school cover band "Thrill of Confusion," Hatley said.

The film also stars Brandon Gibson, whom comedy fans may remember from the local comedy circuit in the Thrill of Confusion era. Something of a local phenom, Gibson was doing stand-up in Memphis at the age of 14. The film also stars Ralph Hatley (Adam's dad -- former radio personality, and current indie film regular).

Southaven SpringFest 2006 to Feature Bo Bice!

SOUTHAVEN – “American Idol” favorite Bo Bice is one of nine musicians and acts slated to perform next month at Southaven’s Springfest. Bice, who runner up on the television show last year and whose songs have hit the top of music charts, will be rocking on the event’s last night, April 22nd at 9:30pm, and will follow country stars Little Big Town and local musician Billy Grantham. Live music starts at 6:30pm, with the headliner band starting at 9:30pm Friday and Saturday night.

The lineup for April 21st includes one of our favorite Memphis Bands as the opening act, Tom Dick and Harry at 6:30pm, and following with Mid-South native Dani McCulloch at 7:45pm. John Roth who was part of the 1980's famous 'Winger' band is part of the Tom, Dick and Harry talent! Sister Hazel, who topped charts in the late 1990s, is the headliner for Friday night.

The Cellular South Family Night of Springfest is April 20th at 6:30pm and features the Christian bands 'Tait' and 'Building 429' as well as Tim Scott and Will Decker of the “Travel the Road” show. “I am very excited to be having three acts each night, and we hope for big crowds each night,” said the city’s public services manager Kristi Faulkner, who coordinates the event. “From Christian artists to rock and country stars, they are all something we should be proud to have coming to Southaven.”

Admission is free on Thursday and before 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; the admission price after 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday is $5 for 10-year-olds and younger and $10 those older than 10.

The city has hosted Springfest since 2004 after taking over the production of the event from a private company. The celebration was first known as Founders’ Day but has since become Springfest.“Springfest offers a variety of events so that all of our citizens have the opportunity to celebrate her birthday,” Mayor Greg Davis said.The city was founded April 15, 1980.

Also a feature of this year’s celebration is the annual Mississippi State Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Winners of the event go on to compete in the World Championship Barbecue Contest at Memphis in May and collect up to nearly $1,500 in prizes. An added attraction is the youth barbecue contest for 6- to 16-year-olds to compete in cooking hamburgers and chicken.“Children who have participated in the past know that it’s a whole lot of fun,” Faulkner said. “Those kids that like to be like their dads should sign up.” Other attractions include arts and crafts vendors and the carnival that will open Wednesday night.

Springfest activities will begin April 8 with the Southaven Springfest Beauty and King pageants at the Southaven Performing Arts Center off Springhill Drive and a prayer breakfast sponsored by the Heritage Home and Garden Club at 8 a.m. April 15 at Dale’s Restaurant. TWO GREAT CITIES, ONE GREAT CAUSE:

Two cities united with a common goal: to celebrate and renew the city of New Orleans. As a sign of support and rebirth as New Orleans begins to rebuild, this observance of music will bring together the diversity of culture that serves as the foundation for both cities.In an historic move, this year’s VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE will joyfully return home to New Orleans for the first of its two back-to-back concerts.

The Saturday, October 29 event in New Orleans will celebrate the heroic efforts of countless individuals who have worked tirelessly and dedicated the past six weeks to the clean-up and recovery of New Orleans. The New Orleans event will be an invitation-only celebration (previous ticketholders exempt) for police, firefighters, National Guard, military and countless others who have aided in the recovery efforts of the city. The event will take place at Riverview Park behind Audubon Zoo.

Festivities remain in place for the Sunday, October 30 event in Memphis, TN. The full concert at AutoZone Park will be in the heart of downtown. In addition, look for a series of free concerts in downtown Memphis beginning Thursday, October 27 and continuing throughout the weekend. “In the course of the past few weeks, the outpouring of support from not only the music industry, but from people from all walks of life, who want to come together to celebrate New Orleans has been tremendous,” says festival producer, Stephen Rehage.

Originally scheduled for Halloween Weekend in New Orleans’ City Park, VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE was displaced by the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. While plans were in full swing to move forward with relocation to Memphis, community leaders in New Orleans approached festival producers about the opportunity to move the event back home for one of its two days, as a tribute event for relief workers.

Festival organizers and Memphis representatives alike agreed this was an amazing opportunity to increase the scope of the event.Tickets for the October 30 Memphis event in AutoZone Park will be available for $35 beginning on Wednesday, October 12 at 5pm EST through Ticketmaster and www.voodoomusicfest.com.

Current ticket holders are asked to visit http://www.voodoomusicfest.com/ for important details regarding their tickets.As previously announced, proceeds from the VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE will benefit the New Orleans Restoration Fund (NORF), a donor-advised fund of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. The remainder of the funds will be distributed directly to humanitarian organizations such as Mercy Corps and Habitat for Humanity as well as local organizations committed to restoring the vibrant cultural community of the greater New Orleans area, including: Audubon Nature Institute; Bring New Orleans Back, a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration of the city of New Orleans; WWOZ, 90.7, New Orleans Roots Radio; and YA/YA, Inc. (Young Aspirations/Young Artists), a local organization dedicated to empowering future generations of young artists and community leaders.

But founder and producer Stephen Rehage said the original lineup -- including Foo Fighters, The Flaming Lips, Joss Stone, Billy Idol, Social Distortion, Digable Planets and New Orleans legends the Neville Brothers and Dr. John -- is expected to remain intact, with possible additions.

A web hosting company in Bartlett has set up a website to help people find missing relatives, family, and friends affected by Hurricane Katrina. Families can post their contact information or email addresses, phone numbers, pictures, and anything else they think will help them locate their families. Website helps find Housing - place ads online anonymously if you have space to offer victims:
You can help with Housing. MoveOn.org just launched a website, http://www.hurricanehousing.org/, to connect your empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to sleep. You can post your offer of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch) on http://www.hurricanehousing.org/ or search there for housing if you need it. MoveOn will pass requests from hurricane victims or relief agencies on to volunteer hosts, who can decide whether or not to respond to a particular request. The host remains anonymous until they reply to someone looking for housing. Pass this information along to people you know in the Southeast: http://www.hurricanehousing.org Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas, especially New Orleans.
