But that hasn't stopped anyone from taking his advice and talking about his book which they haven't read.<br />The New York Times started the US buzz back in February with a </span><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/24/books/24read.html?ex=1329973200&en=a14c1f6c2cb59c8b&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;ei=5124&partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink"><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;color:#3333ff;">generally positive review</span></a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">. Over the years generous philanthropists have donated significant pieces, talented faculty have produced beautiful work, and miscellaneous stuff has been left in studios after semesters end. </span><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">And you know librarians - we can't let good stuff go unorganized, so we decided to document the aesthetic riches of FKCC. We'll be putting the highlights together as a self guided Art tour of the campus, but for now we're just trying to figure out some of the surprises we found. </span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Like this little oil painting. </span><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RrtH-vGH1QI/AAAAAAAAAFA/ssfCSDgig0M/s1600-h/cuban.JPG"><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096746546419455234" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RrtH-vGH1QI/AAAAAAAAAFA/ssfCSDgig0M/s200/cuban.JPG" border="0" /></span></a><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"> Ernie from Art Behind Bars told us it was Cuban , and the label says it used to hang at the Old Cave Bar. For this show, their noses were right up against the artwork. You can see them, and a slew of other engaged art lovers if you click on the flickR badge in the upper left hand menu. I also posted some new pics from the Librarians a GoGo fundraiser.<br /><br />If you missed Anja's opening, make sure and stop by this month. You don't want to miss this show. It's a refreshing palate cleanser after an overdose of island kitsch.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#660000;">Kitsch-free Key West?</span></strong> A few months ago I read a quote from a local theatre manager who was being asked about the less than challenging plays they presented. "Well, it's not like we're a college town" he said.<br /><br />Being someone who works at our apparently invisible local college, that remark keeps rattling around in my brain. Did he forget we exist? Or is he assuming that the college, and the Keys as a whole, aren't ready for scholarly or challenging work?<br /><br />Perhaps he's right. I like the playfulness of the Keys cultural scene and I certainly don't want us to become dour and serious. But the recent Lights on Martello show by <a href="http://www.sculpturekeywest.com/"><strong><span style="color:#3333ff;">Sculpture Key West</span></strong></a>, and the lecture and workshop schedule at <a href="http://www.tskw.org/lecture_workshops.cfm"><strong><span style="color:#3333ff;">Studios Key West</span></strong></a>, seem to indicate a change is afoot. I'm not sure if we are becoming more sophisticated, more commerical, or just more open to outside influences, but I'm determined to figure it out.<br /><br />So I'm taking a non-scientific one question poll to evaluate our current cultural climate. <a href="mailto:lori_kelly@firn.edu"><strong><span style="color:#3333ff;">Email</span></strong> </a>and let me know....<br /><br /><strong>What is the most cutting edge, challenging, cultural show, activity, artist or event that you would like to see here in the Keys?</strong><br />Here's the fine print -<br /><p><span style="font-size:85%;"><em>No long vanished, impossible to present historical personages or events - i.e. Jerry Garcia and the Dead, man </em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;"><em>No too cool for everyone except me and my ubermensch buddies - you have to draw a realistic audience, how about we say 100 people.</em></span> </p><br />Speaking of artistic inspiration... We ordered a whole new crop of off the wall art magazines, and they are just beginning to trickle in. Tattoo art from East LA, Asian post pop, even something in Russian that I ordered 'cuz the cover looked cool.<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0kltozBI/AAAAAAAAABE/azj9TJHqJ6s/s1600-h/juxtapose.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5022134337674988562" style="CURSOR: hand" height="132" alt="" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0kltozBI/AAAAAAAAABE/azj9TJHqJ6s/s200/juxtapose.jpg" width="127" border="0" /></a><a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0f1tozAI/AAAAAAAAAA8/pg49L3S8cBY/s1600-h/giant+robot.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5022134256070609922" style="WIDTH: 117px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 133px" height="143" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0f1tozAI/AAAAAAAAAA8/pg49L3S8cBY/s200/giant+robot.jpg" width="125" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://bp3.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0a1toy_I/AAAAAAAAAA0/QEFduXZtTOQ/s1600-h/flaunt.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5022134170171263986" style="WIDTH: 107px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 134px" height="155" alt="" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0a1toy_I/AAAAAAAAAA0/QEFduXZtTOQ/s200/flaunt.jpg" width="119" border="0" /></a><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0XFtoy-I/AAAAAAAAAAs/f4b7SnVzO1U/s1600-h/arts+of+asia.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5022134105746754530" style="WIDTH: 134px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 135px" height="135" alt="" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0XFtoy-I/AAAAAAAAAAs/f4b7SnVzO1U/s200/arts+of+asia.jpg" width="174" border="0" /></a><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_m98vDP5r4ZY/RbI0TFtoy9I/AAAAAAAAAAk/hqGVg9YA69g/s1600-h/art+chronika.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_50221340370272
