SOCIALIST SUMMER 2006

The Socialist Party's National Committee voted unanimously to kick off our 2006 Socialist Summer Campaign on June 3, 2006 with the following activist campaigns:

Alliance for Fair Food/ Immigrant Workers Rights: The Socialist Party has endorsed the Alliance for Fair Food and will work to support immigrant worker struggles. Socialist Party youth and student members are encouraged to support the Student Farmworker Alliance and their anti-McDonalds actions on campus. We expect affiliates to focus on the Alliance for Fair Food campaign, but encourage work on other immigrant worker struggles

Anti-Recruitment: Socialist Party affiliates and members are encouraged to coordinate anti-recruitment and counter-recruitment actions this summer and fall. We ask affiliates to join existing coalitions or to set up new coalitions where none exist. The Party's Youth Commission will help organize this work.

New Orleans Solidarity: Socialist Party affiliates and individual members have been active in NOLA work, solidarity and education campaigns since Katrina. Members have volunteered at groups like the Common Ground Collective, and some are in New Orleans right now. We encourage members to help organize Common Ground Solidarity Networks, host a speaker from one of the NOLA organizations or help spread the word about the struggle in NOLA and especially the hard-hit Lower Ninth Ward.

Resources are available from the National Office and via the Party’s website, and all campaigns will be part of our August 2006 National Organizing Conference in Detroit.

We Need Your Help
The NC directed the National Action Committee to select 2 conveners for each of these campaigns, and we are now asking for members to volunteer do this.

Conveners will be expected to:
1)Help coordinate campaign work among affiliates
2)Convene monthly phone conferences and keep the National Office
up-to-date on campaign accomplishments and progress.
3)Conveners will also be responsible to helping organize campaign related
workshops at our National Organizing Conference this August (in Detroit).

If you are interested is taking on this responsibility, please contact me ASAP at natsec at sp-usa.org. The NAC will have to select these conveners soon.

We also ask each affiliate to select a point person on each of these campaigns, so we can pass on materials, updates and info. on actions and get regular updates to the convener and National Office.

A Summer Tradition
Socialist Summer has become a tradition in the Socialist Party. It’s a way to keep our affiliates in touch during the summer, build momentum toward our National Organizing Conference and keep youth and students in-touch and ready to organize going into the 2006/07 school year.

May Day 2006

On May 1st walkouts at schools and workplaces across the US will take place in solidarity with immigrant communities under attack by Congressional legislation. These walkouts invoke the powerful tradition of May Day - the socialist celebration of international working class solidarity. Once again US immigrants are taking a leadership role in the struggle for social and economic justice, just as they did at the birth of May Day in Chicago a hundred and twenty years ago. The Socialist Party USA joins in the celebration of May Day and condemns the Democratic and Republican Parties for militarizing our borders and failing to protect the rights of all workers. Callous and ineffectual immigration policies are exacerbating racism in the US and creating an underclass of super-exploited workers, all in the service of corporate profits. The Socialist Party furthermore rejects assimilationist policies and attitudes which marginalize and criminalize the diverse heritages of immigrants and people of color.

Experience teaches us that only militant industry-wide labor action can challenge corporate power and win better wages, hours and working conditions. Nevertheless, the global inequalities that compel migrants to seek risky, back-breaking, low wage labor in the US cannot be resolved within the constraints of modern capitalism. In the tradition of May Day we call for the abolition of capitalist systems of ownership and trade, and the creation of a truly democratic society where production fulfills human need, not profit. In a world riddled with war and underdevelopment, we also add racism, militarism and imperialism to the list of global cancers which must be uprooted as prerequisites to peace and justice.

3rd Anniversary of the Ivasion of Iraq- Troops Out Now!

The Socialist Party opposed the invasion of Iraq from the start and continues to do so. We call for removing all U.S. troops now, since the United States did not have a legitamate reason to invade Iraq in the first place.

On the weekend of March 18th, we call on all locals and all members to join one of the many anti-war actions happening across the U.S. We also call on locals to organize legislative actions outside of the offices of thei local congress peopel demaing TROOP OUT NOW.

Celebrate International Human Rights Day with the Socialist Party USA

CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY W/ THE SOCIALIST PARTY USA

December 10, 2005 will be the 57th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Socialist Party affiliates across the United States will host, sponsor and/or take part in actions supporting the Declaration's call for:
".. the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control." and also that "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment" and "...the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests."

On December 10th we will be in the streets and at union halls and community centers supporting workers rights, immigrant rights and the right to have our basic needs met.
