ஊடகங்கள் மட்டும் தான் காரணமா ? நாம ?

அந்த தொலைக்கட்சியில் இந்துக்களை பழிக்கிறார்கள், இந்த தொலைக்காட்சியில் தாலியை (பெண்கள் அணியும் தாலியை) அவமதிக்கிறார்கள் என்ற வலைப்பதிவுகள் வந்த வண்ணம் இருக்கின்றன.

இத்தகைய செய்திகளுக்கு என் பொதுவான பதில் - முதல் பாகம் :

1.1. ஊடகங்களும், சட்டமும் ஹிந்துக்களுக்கு எதிராய் வளர்ந்துகொண்டு / பேசிக்கொண்டு இருக்கின்றன, என்ற எண்ணத்தை நான் ஓரளவு மட்டுமே ஒப்புக்கொள்ளாத் தயார்…

1.2. தாலி அணிவது மட்டுமா ?
- விவாகரத்து
- கருக்கலைப்பு (அபார்ஷன் )
- முறையற்ற பால் உறவு (Sex before marriage)
- கற்பில்லா வாழ்க்கை (adultry / live in etc)
- முதியோரை வீட்டை விட்டு விரட்டுவதை (elder abuse) ………ஏதோ கடையில் காபியோ பிட்சாவோ ஆர்டர் பண்ணுவது போல சகஜமாக்கி இந்திய / ஹிந்து பாரம்பர்யத்துக்கு வேட்டு வைப்பதோடு .. பல இந்துக்குடும்பங்களை சீர் அழிக்கின்றனர் இதே ஊடகங்கள் என்ற எண்ணத்தையும்

1.3. பள்ளிகளில் கருத்தடை சாதனங்கள் வழங்குவது பற்றி நடந்த / நடக்கும் விவாதத்திலும் ஊடகங்கள் விளையாடின என்ற எண்ணத்தையும்

1.4. சமீபத்தில் இ. பி கோ 377 க்கு எதிரான சிறிய போராட்டங்களுக்கு முழு வலிவும் முழு வெளிச்சமும் கொடுத்தன் ஊடகங்கள் …. இவை எல்லாம் ஒரே குறிக்கோளுடன்…அதாவது இந்து எதிர்ப்பு குறிக்கோளுடன் என்ற எண்ணங்களை நான் ஓரளவு மட்டுமே ஒப்புக்கொள்ளத் தயார்

5. இந்த சீரழிவுகளுக்கு நாமே - அதாவது இந்துக்களே முதல் காரணம் என்று நான் சொல்லுகிறேன்

நாம் முன்னேற நாம் மாற வேண்டும்….. இல்லை …இல்லல நாம் தப்பிக்க நாம் மாற வேண்டும் என்ற நிலைமையில் உள்ளோம்

6. ஏன் இப்படி சிந்திக்கிறேன்... உதாரணங்கள் ...

- ஷஹபானோ கேசை எடுத்துப்ப்பாருங்கள் : சுப்ரீம் கோர்டென்ன, மத்திய அரசென்ன ? யார் வந்தாலும் எங்கள் தனி மனித (விவாக / விவாகரத்து / வீட்டு) சட்டங்களில் யாரும் தலையிட முடியாது என்று … இருதியாக …. உறுதியாக ஒரு சிறுபான்மை சொன்னது … சொன்ன வார்த்தையை காக்க போராடியது …. அந்த மாதிரி ஒரு நிலைப்பாடு எடுக்க இந்துக்கள் தயாரா ? நிலைப்பாடை உறுதிசெய்ய இந்துக்கள் சாத்வீகமான விதத்தில் போராட தயாரா ?

- …. தப்போ சரியோ..என் வீட்டு விஷயங்களில் நீ தலையிடாதே.. அதை நான் பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறேன்… உன் வேலையை நீ பார் என்று அந்த சிறுபான்மையினர் தெளிவாய், எளிதாய் சொன்னார்களே…… இதை சொல்ல இந்துக்கள் தயாரா ?

- சரி இதெல்லாம் போகட்டும்….. ஸ்டார் டீவியோ… இல்லை எந்த மண்ணாங்கட்டி டீவியோ, ஹிந்துக்கள் மிகவும் புனிதமாய் போற்றும் தாலியை அவமத்தித்தார்கள் என்று சொல்லி பல வலைப்பதிவுகள் ...மடல்கள் வந்த வண்ணம் இருக்கின்றன..... ஆனால் அதே தொலைககாகட்சியில் தாலியை கயட்டி காண்பித்த அந்த தாலியுடன் வந்த ஹிந்துப் பெண்ணை ஒரு பைட்டக்கோ…..அல்லது பொதுக்கூட்டமோ போட்டு இந்துக்களால் தண்டிக்க அல்ல ….குறைந்த பட்சம் கண்டிக்க (censure செய்ய ) முடியுமா ? மதத்தை விட்டு ஒதுக்க முடியுமா ? சத்தியமாய் முடியாது ….. ..

- இந்த செய்திகளையே பாருங்கள்….. ராம் ஜேத்மலானி, அருண் ஜெயிட்லி என்று வக்கீல் பிரபலங்கள் ஒரு பட்டியலே இருக்கும் தாய் நாட்டில் நாட்டில், யாரோ பாவம், ஒரு சென்னை வக்கீல் விஜை டீ வீக்கு நோட்டீஸ் விட்டு இருக்கிறார்…. இவர் நோட்டீசை ஆதரித்து எத்தனை இந்துக்கள் மவுன ஊர்வலம் போகப்போகிறார்கள் ? எத்தை இந்துக்கள் கோர்ட்டின் முன் மவுன ஊர்கோலம் போவார்கள் ?

7. சாமியில்லை கோவில் இல்லை என்ற கோஷங்கள் போய், இப்போது தாலி… கற்பு … ஓரினக் கலப்பு என்று நம் கலாசாரத்துக்கு எதிராய் தாக்குதல் ஆரம்பித்து விட்டது என்றால் தாக்க விடுபவர் யார் ?

8. கலாசாரம் தான் இந்தியாவின் ஆணிவேர்……அதை காக்க நாம் அமைதியான வழியில் போராட தயாரா ?

- வடக்கே பூஜா என்ற ஒரு இந்துப் பெண் தெருவில் அறைகுறை ஆடையுடன் நடந்து போனாள்…..செய்தி படித்து இருப்பீர்கள் ……கடைசியில் பார்த்தால் அவளுக்கு மூளையில் கோளாறு என்றனர்…. உண்மை தெரியும் முன் அவளுக்கு ஆதரவுக்கு போனது யார் ? ஹிந்துக்களா …இல்லை மற்றவர்களா ? இந்த அலங்கோல ஆட்டம் மற்ற சிறுபான்மையில் நடக்குமா ? நடந்தால் அந்தப் பெண் அந்த மததில் இருக்க முடியுமா ?

- ஊரெல்லாம் பேசியென்ன … நம் சென்னை family courtக்கு ஒரு தடவை போய் பாருங்கள் … எத்தனை ஹிந்து கேஸ்கள், எத்தனை சிறுபான்மை கேஸ்கள் என்று பாருங்கள் … உடகம் என்ன ஊடகம் … உள்ளே நம் சரக்கு இருக்கும் நிலை தெரியும் ….

- ஊடகம் சொல்லியா ஒருத்தொருத்தியும் அலிமணி கேட்டு புருஷன் மீதும் மாமியார் மீதும் …வயதான மாமனார் மீதும் கேஸ் போடுகிறாள் ? ஊடகம் சொல்லியா நிஜ வாழ்வில் கோர்ட்டில் ஹிந்து பெண்களும் ஹிந்து வக்கீல்களும் *ஹிந்துக்களின்* தா….யை அறுக்கிறார்கள் ????….

9. என்ன சொல்ல நண்பர்களே….. நாம் முன்னேற நாம் மாற வேண்டும்….. இல்லை …இல்லல நாம் தப்பிக்க நாம் மாற வேண்டும் என்ற நிலைமையில் உள்ளோம்

- இந்த டீவி ஒளிபரப்பில் தாலியை கைய்யில் பிடித்துக்க்க்கொண்டு இருக்கும் பெண் என்ன சிறுபான்மையா ? அமேரிக்காவில் இருந்து வந்தாரா ?

- புருஷனுக்குத்தான் மதிப்பில்லை…. புருஷன் சம்பாதித்துபோடும் மெஷின் என்று இந்த அம்மா நினைத்தால் தாலியை ஏன் கட்டிக்கிட்டார் ? யாராவது இவரை கட்டடாயப்படுத்தி இந்துவாய் …தாலி கட்டிய இந்துவாய் இருக்க சொன்னார்களா ? இந்த பொம்பளை யார் ? இவரை நாம் கண்டித்தோமா ? …. யாராவது கேட்பார்களா என்று பார்த்தேன்… யாரும் கேட்டதாய் தெரியவில்லை … நான் கேட்டேன்

- ஏதோ ஒரு சேனலில் தாலி கயட்டியதுக்கு இத்தனை லெட்டர் போடுறோமே, தாலி தார்காலீகமாய் ஒரு தொலைக்கட்சியில் மட்டுமல்ல, கோர்ட்டில் பல ஆயிரம் கேஸ்களில் தாலி எடுக்கப்படுகிறது …. ..குடும்பங்கள் சீரழிகின்றன…. முதிய பெற்றோர்கள் …தெருவில் நிற்கின்றனர் …. இவை பெரும்பாலும் இந்துக்களிலேயே நடக்கிறது …. தகப்னை அறியாப் பிள்ளைகள் ((விவாகரத்தினால்) உருவாகின்றனர் ....இதெல்லாம் கலாசாரத்துக்கு எதி இல்லையா ?..இதை யார் தட்டிக்கேட்பது ?

- 300 … 400 ஆண்டுகள் நம்மை பலரும் ஆண்டனர். இந்து மதத்துக்கு எதிர் என்று பகிரங்கமாய் இருந்தவர்கள் ஆண்ட பல நூற்றாண்டுகளை தேவாரமும் திருவாசகம் பிரபந்தங்களும் வேதமும் கோயிலகளும் ஆயிரம் கால் மண்டபங்களும் தாண்டி வந்துவிட்டன…. …. இன்றைய தாலி கழட்டும் அவலத்தை …. கோர்ட்டு கோர்டாய் குடும்பங்கள் நிற்கும் அவலத்தை நாம் நல்லபடியாய் தாண்டுவோமா என்ற என் ஆதங்கம் தான் என் பதிகளாய் வெளிப்படுக்கின்றன….

பாதுகப்பான பகுதி என்று இலங்கை அரசு அறிவித்த பகுதியை இலங்கை இராணுவம் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பீரங்கி குண்டுகளால் தாக்கியதாய் பல வாக்குமூலங்கள் வெளி வருகின்றன.

இதில் ஆயுதமற்ற அப்பாவி மக்கள் பல ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் செத்து மடிந்து இருக்கின்றனர்.

ஐநா சபையினர் சுற்றிப்பார்த்த பின், யாழ் அகதி முகாம்களில் இருந்து பல்லாயிரம் தமிழர்கள் இதற்கு சாட்சியம் கூறுகின்றனர்

பீரங்கி மழையில் இருந்து தப்பிக்க, வெளியேரி ஓட முயன்றோம். இலங்கை இராணுவப் பிடிக்கு ஓட முயன்றவர்களை விடுதலைப் புலிகள் சுட்டார்கள். கடைசியாய் சுமார் 50000 பேர் சாவா வாழவா என்ற நிலையில் கிளம்பினோம். எஞ்சியவர்கள் தப்பினோம் என்று கூறும் பாதர், தன்னுடைய சக கிறித்தவ வழிபாட்டாளர்களை அகதி முகாம்களில் தேடுகிறார்.

ஒரு தமிழன் என்ற வகையில் நான் விடுதலை புலிகளை குற்றம் சொல்ல முடியாது. இந்த முகாமைப் பாருங்கள், தமிழர்களை ஒடுக்க இலங்கை அரசு முயல்கிறது என்கிரார் பாதர் அமல்ராஜ்.

வானத்தில் இருந்து பாதுகாப்பு பகுதியை சுற்றிப் பார்த்தவர்கள் பல கோரக் காட்சிகளை கண்டுள்ளனர். எந்த மனித உறிமை அத்துமீறலும் நடக்கவில்லை என்று இலங்கை அரசு சொன்னாலும், பல இடங்களில் கிராமங்கள் மீதும் வீடுகள், பனை மரங்கள் மீதும் பீரங்கி குண்டு மழையின் அடையாளங்கள் தென்படுகின்றன. சாம்பலான வீடுகள், வெள்ளைக் கொடியுடன் அம்போ என்று கைவிடப்பட்டு நிற்கும் பேருந்து, கறுகிய பனை மரங்கள், வரிசையாய் குழி தோண்டி புதைக்ப்பட்ட சவக்குழிகள், மூடாத புதைக்க தயார் நிலையில் இருக்கும் வேறு சவக்குழிகள் என கோரம் தொடர்கிறது

அப்பாவிகளை கொன்ற பீரங்கிக்குண்டு மழையை பற்றியும், இராணுவத்தின் மனித உறிமை அத்துமீரல்காளைப் பற்றியும் தகுந்த விசாரணை நடக்குமா என்பது கேள்விக்குறியாகவே உள்ளது.

Horror for civilians trapped in Sri Lanka's 'no-fire zone'

From the air, the battle zone reveals itself one clue at a time — the scorched patches of earth, the blasted palm trees, the burnt-out skeletal houses.

Then the helicopter banks sharp right over the green lagoon and a blaze of white sand appears — to the gasps of the first outsiders to glimpse the beach where the Tamil Tigers made their last stand.

Sri Lanka’s no-fire zone is a scene of such utter devastation it mocks its very name. It is a glimpse of hell unleashed in paradise. A glistening white beach packed with home-made bunkers where civilians huddled to protect themselves from the shells that the government denies launching in the final weeks of the offensive. The craters in the white sand; the charcoal coloured scorch marks and bombed-out dwellings; the abandoned bus, its forlorn white flag still flying, and the human detritus tell a very different story.

Peering down from above, one struggles to imagine the terror of being here in those last days of battle when 100,000 civilians were trapped in this tiny spit of sand between the guns of the Tamil Tigers and the cannons of the Sri Lankan army. No journalists, aid workers or independent observers have had access to the zone until this weekend when a small group of journalists accompanied the United Nations Secretary General on aa flight over the zone.

Father Amalraj does not have to imagine; he was here in the bunkers, among his flock, until the day before the Tigers announced their surrender. He described the terror of living under the constant shelling as the last battle approached.

"The people were targets for both side," the Roman Catholic priest told The Times inside the barbed wire fences of Manik Farm, one of the camps to which Tamil civilians were sent after they escaped from the no-fire zone.

"There was heavy shelling from the army side. The LTTE shot people. The army were trying to capture us. The people were caught in between in the last moment for the LTTE and the crucial point in the battle for the army. I cannot say which side was crueller."

He and his parishioners fled their village, Poonakary, just below the Jaffna peninsula when government forces overran it last November. They were on the move for months, fleeing ahead of the fighting over and over again until they reached the narrow strip of land on the eastern side of the Nanthikadal Lagoon, north of Mullativu in February, soon after it was designated a no-fire zone" by the Government.

It was anything but. Father Amalraj described how the people in the zone had cowered in improvised bunkers built on the beach for weeks on end to escape the shelling. "The shelling was just like raining," he said. "Within this two square kilometres, there were more than 100,000 people, packed in and shells raining down."

Many were killed. The UN believes that between 8,000 and 10,000 civilians have died in the conflict since the beginning of this year.

Father Amalraj, albeit anecdotally, believes the final tally is far higher. "We cannot say exactly how many died, but it was many, I think about 20,000."

The Sri Lankan government denies inflicting a single civilian death, blaming the shelling on the Tamil Tigers, despite the accounts of witnesses like Father Amalraj who testify that the shells came from the direction of the government front line.

As April turned to May, and the artillery exacted a heavier toll, bodies went unburied.

"We didn’t have the chance to bury our kith and kin," Father Amalraj said. "We left them on the road. The whole crowd is a witness to that," he said, gesturing around to the parishioners gathered in his tent in Manik Farm. "All around, the dead and injured."

Some people were buried. From the air neat rows of freshly dug graves revealed themselves but it was unclear if they contained the bodies of fighters or civilians. Others have been dug but not filled. A crater next to them appears stained red. Elsewhere, on the beach near to civilian shelters, similarly shaped mounds appear in the sand. The Times has passed the photographs to independent experts for analysis.

Some of those who emerged to try and escape were felled by the Tigers’ gunfire. "The LTTE shot people trying to escape," Father Amalraj said. "It was not at random. They shot in the air and then they shot at the people and killed them."

He named a Tiger commander who gave the orders to shoot at fleeing civilians as Tiramulai. The last person he saw shot before he fled was one of his parishioners, killed while trying to flee the zone on the afternoon of May 16, two days before the Tigers' leader Vellupilai Prabhakaran was killed.

But by then, the shelling was so intense that the remaining civilians decided that they had no option but to try to escape, even at the risk of being shot themselves.

"I said I am going with my people because we are going to die tonight here," he recalled. Most of the remaining civilians believed the same thing. Fifty thousand of them began to make their way towards the causeway out of the zone, rebuilt by government troops on the other side.

"We started coming out and they [the Tigers] fired at us. But they didn’t shoot me, they couldn’t stop me. We knew it was useless to stay. We put our fate with God."

What happened inside the so-called no fire zone will not be the subject of any investigation in Sri Lanka, although the Prime Minister has called for a commission to probe the arming and activities of the Tigers.

At a joint press conference with Mr Ban, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama brushed away questions about the chances of an investigation into war crimes by both sides. Was he entirely confident then that no Sri Lankan forces had committed such crimes? "Absolutely," he replied.

On Tuesday the UN Human Rights Council will meet to decide whether it believes there is cause for an international probe. Britain and the US are among the countries calling for one.

Father Amalraj, meanwhile, searches the tents of Zone Four in the Tamil "welfare camp" at Manik Farm, looking for his lost sheep. Of 4,000 original parishioners, he has no idea how many survived. Which side, in the end, does he blame for the terror and loss of those last few months in the no-fire zone? "As A Tamil, I can’t blame the LTTE for fighting for the Tamil people," he says. "Look at this camp and you can see. They are planning to oppress the Tamil community under the pretext of terrorism. All our efforts have been brought to zero."

Sri Lanka says no aid access until rebel screening

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka said Sunday it would not allow UN aid workers complete access to civilians who remain in camps after the defeat of the Tamil Tigers until rebels hiding among the refugees had been weeded out.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, on a visit to one camp housing 200,000 Tamils, had called for his staff to be given "unhindered access" to those displaced in the decades-long war that ended a week ago.

Ban, who toured the Menik Farm facility on Saturday, described the conditions as overcrowded and the detained civilians as "badly in need of food, water and sanitation".

The government responded to his appeal for aid agencies to be permitted to help by saying that "as conditions improved, especially with regard to security, there would be no objections to such assistance".

President Mahinda Rajapakse's statement warned of "the likely presence of Tamil Tiger infiltrators among the large numbers who had come to the government areas".

The government describes the camps as "welfare villages" and says it wants to resettle all displaced civilians as soon as possible, but Tamil activists say they are "concentration camps" with inmates penned in behind barbed wire.

Rajapakse told Ban he would address the underlying ethnic grievances that lay behind the war, in which 80,000 to 100,000 people died in years of fighting between government troops and Tamil separatists.

In the final months of battle, Rajapakse ignored the UN's repeated calls for a ceasefire and pushed on with the military offensive that finally brought about the Tigers' defeat.

Campaign groups have condemned both the army for indiscriminate shelling and the Tigers for holding non-combatants hostage and shooting them if they tried to escape.

About 300,000 Tamils abandoned their homes and waded through swamps and jungle to flee the violence, only to be herded into the spartan state-run camps.

"I'm very moved after what I have seen. I've seen so many wounded," the secretary general said after inspecting the mass of makeshift corrugated iron shacks and tents.

The government was "doing its utmost best" but it lacked the necessary resources, Ban later told reporters.

"With this in mind, the UN can help," he said. "The UN must be given immediate unhindered access to the camps, the overcrowding must end and there should be special programmes for pregnant mothers and children."

Aid agencies have complained that even the limited access they had to the detained Tamils had been cut off in recent days.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday the government had stopped it from delivering desperately needed food to the Menik Farm camp, where it said people were still arriving after enduring "unimaginable hardship".

The UN chief flew by helicopter over the battlefield in the northeast of Sri Lanka on Saturday, observing a desolate landscape of craters, burnt-out vehicles and charred buildings.

Velupillai Prabhakaran, the Tamil Tigers' founder and leader who was killed in the last days of fighting, was cremated near where he died, army chief Sarath Fonseka said on Sunday.

"We cremated the body in the same area and threw the ashes into the ocean," General Fonseka told the Sunday Rivira newspaper.

"Even before Prabhakaran was killed, I knew we had won the war but I was overjoyed when I had confirmation of his death."

The government broadcast footage of Prabhakaran's body on Tuesday after a pro-rebel website said he was still alive.

250,000 Tamil civilians are held behind the wire of one refugee camp. Many have stories of a desperate escape. Most go unheard - but 10-year-old Sopika's account is a testimony to brutality

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday visited a mass displacement camp packed with Tamil civilians as he appealed to Sri Lanka's triumphant government to "heal the wounds" after three decades of civil war. As he surveyed the beleaguered and shell-shocked refugees held there and as the army searched for Tamil Tiger fighters among them, he would not have found time to talk to Sopika, aged 10.

Sopika is one of at least 250,000 Tamil civilians being held in Menik Farm in the north of the country. Barbed-wire fences encircle the endless rows of white tents, preventing civilians from getting out and journalists from getting in, as the government continues to prevent the stories of Sopika and thousands like her from being told.

Yesterday, Sri Lanka's health ministry announced that it is investigating three doctors detained by the military accused of giving false information about war zone casualties to the media. The physicians were among the few sources of information on those wounded and killed in the fighting, since most journalists were banned from the area.

But slowly the stories of ordinary Tamils are emerging. And Sopika's harrowing account of her recent ordeal, related via intermediaries, helps explain why the authorities are so keen to restrict the flow of information.

Her story is testimony to the brutality of both the Tamil Tiger fighters and the government during the final stages of a 26-year conflict, during which each side accused the other of acts of unspeakable cruelty. Both, it seems, were telling the truth and it is the Tamil civilians who paid the price.

Sopika was born on the island of Kayts, off the northern tip of Jaffna. Until eight months ago, she and her older brother and younger sister lived with their parents in a village overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Then they left to visit the town of Madhu on the mainland. As the government unleashed its military offensive against the Tigers, their route home was shut off. Desperate to escape the shelling, they were driven ahead of the advancing government forces, further into LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) territory, moving from place to place, dodging air strikes and artillery.

Human rights groups and international officials have accused the government of heavily shelling areas densely populated with civilians in the last weeks of the war. The government has denied using heavy weapons. But by the time the family reached Mullaitivu, Sopika said she found the noise of the jets and artillery overwhelming. Her parents decided they had to make a break for it. It was 2am when they set off with several other families.

"As we were walking, the Tigers started to fire and the young boy walking in front of me got shot," she said. "My face and clothes were splattered with the blood of this boy. He died.

"We turned back because we were afraid of more death," she said.

Sopika said she remembered the moment when a sniper's bullet killed a relative sitting close by.

"I saw the bullets hit her head... half her face fell off," she said.

The family decided to try again to escape. This time they headed for the shore, again setting out at 2am, hoping that the darkness would provide them with cover from the guns of the Tamil Tigers and the government forces.

"We were walking in between the shooting from both sides, and we realised that we could be seen in the moonlight," she said.

In front of her, a 12-year-old boy and his mother were caught in the crossfire, collapsing dead on the ground. "We missed death by a few feet," she said. They turned back again.

The next day, there was no food, so the children went to bed hungry. They awoke again at 2am, and joined another family walking towards the shore.

"We started to walk a long way... no, really we started to run, we were scared we would get caught by the LTTE, we would get beaten," she said.

Dodging the bullets, they pushed on through shrubs and thorn bushes. "There was no road or path, there was a lot of mud and ditches," she said. "Once I fell over a dead body."

Nearing the shore of the lagoon, they started to crawl on their bellies across the sand, terrified of being caught by the Tigers. Entering the water, Sopaki found the waves crashing down on her head. She could not swim; she had never learnt.

"I was terrified because the water was up to my neck," she said. "I could barely stand as the current kept pulling me down. The navy's searchlights kept beaming into the water. I cried out 'Appa Appa' [father, father] when I fell into a trough. I nearly drowned. During the entire journey, we just wanted to run, but we couldn't."

Finally emerging from the water, they could see the army ahead of them. "We were told to lie down. They wanted to search us," she said. The soldiers gave them biscuits, dates and water and put them on a bus. "People were shouting and crying because many of them had lost their relative during the search operation," she said. Sopaki was also crying because her father and brother were missing, but the next day they were reunited.

The family arrived at Menik Farm eight days ago, just as the fighting reached a climax. Two days later, the government announced that the war was over. But their ordeal is not.

Conditions inside the camps are squalid: food and water are in desperately short supply and even the government admits the toilets are inadequate.

Others imprisoned behind the wire have their own tales of hardship and horror. According to private UN documents, at least 7,000 civilians were killed in the final months of fighting in the war. The Red Cross says it evacuated 13,769 sick and wounded people and their relatives from the war zone.

"It is a great relief that the war is over, but peace has come at a very high price, with thousands of civilians killed, including large numbers of children," said James Elder, the Unicef spokesman in Sri Lanka. "There is no end to the gut-wrenching stories of death and destruction that scar these children."

MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio (March 20) — James M. Mason knew his wife since she was born a boy. The janitor and former military man was a boarder in the child's home and was treated like family.
Many were surprised when he married Chris nearly three years ago, not just because he knew she underwent sex-change surgery 13 years before, temporarily calling herself Christine Newton-John after the pop singer with the same last name. He was in his 70s, she in her 30s. He was mild-mannered; she had a domineering personality.

Then, last summer, there was another surprise: Chris Mason was accused of exercising her frail husband to death so she could inherit his retirement benefits, in an attack caught on surveillance video.

Mason was sentenced Friday to four years in prison on her guilty plea to reckless homicide. She expressed remorse to her family members during a hearing in Geauga County court.

"I want to apologize to my former husband's half-sister for her loss as well as to my family and for my loss," she said in court. "It's been very upsetting and devastating for our entire family."

They were in love, Mason said. "I'm not going to let jail turn me away. I will continue to hold my head up high and keep plugging along and moving along as I go through my life," she said.

Police say she forced James Mason, who had heart disease, to do stressful activity in an indoor pool for more than two hours. He collapsed and died the next day after Chris Mason authorized his removal from life support.

"It's just been a total nightmare," said Maryanne Vallandingham, Chris Mason's mother, who is ill with emphysema and distraught over her daughter's fate and the death of a close son-in-law.

Although the tale of James and Chris Mason didn't begin as a nightmare, the relationship always was considered unusual. The marriage seemed not much more than a living arrangement, said Chris Mason's sister, Cathy Vondrasek, who learned of it only after the two were wed.

"I never knew of them to be romantic," she said. "Jim was always like an uncle to us."
Her sister is domineering, "although I hate to say it," while James Mason was very gentle and laid back, Vondrasek said.

"Jim was a people pleaser," Vondrasek said. "If you'd ask him to go to a movie he'd probably say, 'Sure, why not?' So my take about him is if you'd say, 'Hey, you want to get married?', he'd say 'OK.'

James Mason, 73 when he died in June, first met his wife's family in 1963 when he became a boarder at Vallandingham's home. Four years later, his wife was born as John Leslie Vallandingham.

Chris Mason, now 41, is a former health care aide for the elderly. In 1983, a decade before her sex-change operation, she decided that she and Mason should be together, she told police. The couple were living together at the time, but didn't marry until Aug. 18, 2006.

They lived in Middlefield, a village within a northeast Ohio area best known for its Amish community, for about four months. Chris Mason's mother lived with them for much of that time.

Vallandingham, who was present during the attack that killed James Mason but told police she didn't see any harsh treatment, does recall previous conflicts between the couple.

பெங்களூரில் உள்ள இந்திய மேலாண்மை நிறுவனப் பேராசிரியரும், வழக்கறிஞருமான ஆர்.முரளீதர் உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தில் வியாழக்கிழமை மனு ஒன்றைத் தாக்கல் செய்தார்.

நீதிபதிகள் கே.டி.தாமஸ் மற்றும் ஆர்.பி.சேத்தி ஆகியோர் அடங்கிய பெஞ்ச் இந்தஉத்தரவைப் பிறப்பித்தது. சுந்தரத்தின் செயல் அப்பட்டமான கிரிமினல் நடவடிக்கைஎன்று அவர்கள் தங்களது உத்தரவில் கூறினர்.

கடந்த மாதம் 3-ம் தேதி தலைமைநீதிபதி ஏ.எஸ்.ஆனந்த்திற்கு, சுந்தரம் அனுப்பியதந்தியில், போலியான வயதைக் காட்டி சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட் நீதிபதியாகி விட்டார் என்பதுஉள்ளிட்ட பல குற்றங்களை சுமத்தியிருந்தார். இதை நீதிமன்ற அவமதிப்பாக தற்போதுசுப்ரீம் கோர்ட் கூறியுள்ளது.

பெஞ்ச் சார்பில் தீர்ப்பை அறிவித்த நீதிபதி கே.டி.தாமஸ் கூறியதாவது:

சுந்தரம் இதய நோயாளி என்பதால் அவருக்கு விதிக்கப்பட்ட தண்டனை 1 மாதத்திற்குநிறுத்தி வைக்கப்படுகிறது.

இதுபோன்ற செயலில் எதிர்காலத்தில் ஈடுபட மாட்டேன் என்று சுந்தரம் உறுதியளிக்கவேண்டும். அப்படிச் செய்தால், தண்டனையை மேலும் ஐந்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு நிறுத்திவைக்க நீதிமன்றம் முடிவு செய்யும்.

இருப்பினும், இந்த ஐந்து ஆண்டு காலத்தில் வேறு ஏதாவது குற்ற நடவடிக்கையில்ஈடுபட்டால், சஸ்பெண்ட் உத்தரவு நீக்கப்பட்டு தண்டனை அமலாக்கப்படும்.

வேலூரில் நேற்று முன்தினம் பணிக்கு திரும்பிய தி.மு.க. வக்கீல்கள் மற்றும் போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்ட வக்கீல்கள் இடையே மோதல் ஏற்பட்டது. இதில் சிலர் காயம் அடைந்தனர். இந்த நிலையில் நேற்றும் தி.மு.க. வக்கீல்கள் கோர்ட்டுக்கு சென்று தங்களது பணிகளை மேற்கொண்டனர்.

கண்ணாடி கதவு உடைப்பு

இதற்கிடையில் வேலூர் கோர்ட்டின் கீழ் தளத்தில் உள்ள வேலூர் கூடுதல் அரசு வக்கீல் மு.மு.பார்த்திபனின் அறை முன்பு இருந்த பெயர் பலகை உடைக்கப்பட்டு, கோர்ட்டுக்கு வெளியே உள்ள வளாகத்தில் தூக்கி வீசப்பட்டு கிடந்தது. மேலும் அவரது அறை கதவு கண்ணாடிகள் உடைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தன. இதுகுறித்து வக்கீல் மு.மு.பார்த்திபன், மாவட்ட நீதிபதி கலையரசனிடம் புகார் மனு கொடுத்தார்.

இதுகுறித்து தி.மு.க. மாவட்ட அவைத்தலைவர் முகமது சகி கூறியதாவது:-

பணிக்கு திரும்பிய தி.மு.க. வக்கீல்கள் 11 பேர் சங்கத்தில் இருந்து நீக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக தகவல் வெளியாகி உள்ளது. ஆனால் இதுகுறித்து எங்களுக்கு எந்த தகவலும் வரவில்லை. உச்சநீதிமன்றத்தின் உத்தரவை மறுத்தால், அது கோர்ட்டை அவமதிக்கும் செயலாகும். எனவே வருகிற திங்கட்கிழமை முதல் அனைத்து வக்கீல்களும் கோர்ட்டு புறக்கணிப்பை கைவிட்டு பணிக்கு திரும்ப வேண்டும்.

கடந்த மாதம் 19-ந் தேதி சென்னை ஐகோர்ட்டு வளாகத்திற்குள் வக்கீல்களும், போலீசாரும் மோதிக் கொண்டனர். இந்த சம்பவத்திற்கு காரணமான போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகளை சஸ்பெண்டு செய்ய வலியுறுத்தி தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் வக்கீல்கள் கோர்ட்டைப் புறக்கணித்து போராட்டம் நடத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

23-வது நாளாக நேற்று வக்கீல்கள் ஐகோர்ட்டுக்கு வெளியே தர்ணா போராட்டம் நடத்தினார்கள்.

வக்கீல்கள் தொடர்ந்து கோர்ட்டைப் புறக்கணித்து போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டிருப்பதால் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்த பொதுமக்கள் சிரமப்படுகின்றனர்.

இதைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு, வக்கீல்கள் ஆஜராகாவிட்டாலும் தகுதி அடிப்படையில் வழக்குகளை விசாரிக்கலாம் என்றும், வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தவர்களுக்கு மாற்று ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்ய வழிவகை காண வேண்டும் என்றும் நீதிபதிகளுக்கு சென்னை ஐகோர்ட்டு அறிவிக்கை மூலம் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது. ஐகோர்ட்டு மட்டுமில்லாமல் தமிழ்நாட்டில் உள்ள அனைத்து கோர்ட்டுகளிலும் நாளை முதல் (திங்கட்கிழமை) இந்த அறிவிக்கை அமல்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.

ஐகோர்ட்டு அறிவிக்கை வக்கீல்களின் போராட்டத்தை தூண்டிவிடும் வகையில் உள்ளது.

கடந்த மாதம் 19-ந் தேதி ஐகோர்ட்டு வளாகத்திற்குள் நடந்த சம்பவம் தொடர்பாக நீதி கேட்டு வக்கீல்கள் நெடுந்தூர பயணத்திற்கு தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளனர். இந்த சம்பவத்தால் வக்கீல்கள் உடலளவில், மனதளவில் பெரிதும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கிறார்கள். எனவே, எங்கள் மூலம் சிவில் மற்றும் கிரிமினல் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தவர்களுக்காக இனிமேல் கோர்ட்டில் ஆஜராகமாட்டோம்.

தமிழ்நாடு வக்கீல்கள் சங்கத் தலைவர் பிரபாகரன் பேசும்போது, ``வக்கீல்களை தாக்கிய போலீஸ் அதிகாரிகள் சஸ்பெண்டு செய்யும் வரை கோர்ட்டு புறக்கணிப்பும், போராட்டமும் தொடரும். வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தவர்கள் சார்பில் கோர்ட்டில் ஆஜராவதற்கான வக்காலத்துகளை தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் உள்ள 70 ஆயிரம் வக்கீல்கள் நாளை (திங்கட்கிழமை) வாபஸ் பெறுவார்கள். எனவே, தகுதி அடிப்படையில் வழக்கு நடத்தி முடிவு காண வேண்டும் என்ற அறிவிக்கையை ஐகோர்ட்டு தலைமை நீதிபதி எச்.எல்.கோகலே திரும்பப் பெற வேண்டும்'' என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.

சென்னை: திங்கள்கிழமை முதல் தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து நீதி்மன்றங்களிலும் வழக்கு விசாரணைகளைத் தொடங்க வேண்டும். வக்கீல்கள் வராவிட்டால் வழக்கின் தன்மையைப் பொறுத்து அவற்றை டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்யலாம் என உயர்நீதிமன்றப் பதிவாளர் மாலா உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளார்.

இலங்கை பிரச்சினை, குற்றவியல் நடைமுறை திருத்த சட்டம் ஆகியவற்றுக்காக கடந்த ஜனவரி மாதம் 30ம் தேதி முதல் கோர்ட் புறக்கணிப்பை வக்கீ்ல்கள் நடத்தி வந்தார்கள்.

கடந்த மாதம் 19ம் தேதி புறக்கணிப்பை கைவிட்டு, பணிக்கு திரும்பினார்கள். ஆனால் அன்றைய தினம் பிற்பகல் உயர்நீதிமன்ற வளாகத்திற்குள் வக்கீல்கள், போலீசார் இடையே மோதல் ஏற்பட்டது.

இதைத்தொடர்ந்து போலீசார் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வற்புறுத்தி வக்கீல்கள் கோர்ட்டுகளை புறக்கணித்து ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் நடத்தி வருகிறார்கள். இதனால் தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் உள்ள கோர்ட்டுகளில் வழக்கு விசாரணை பெரிதும் பாதித்துள்ளது.

இந்த நிலையில், உயர்நீதிமன்ற பதிவாளர் ஜெனரல் ஆர்.மாலா ஒரு அறிவி்ப்பை வெளியிட்டுள்ளார்.

அதில் கூறப்பட்டிருப்பதாவது:

16ம் தேதி முதல் கோர்ட்டுகளில் வழக்குகள் விசாரணைக்கு எடுத்துக் கொள்ளப்படும்; வழக்கின் தன்மை மற்றும் தகுதிக்கு (மெரிட்) ஏற்ப அவற்றில் முடிவு எடுக்கப்படும் என்ற தகவலை, தமிழகத்தில் உள்ள கிரிமினல், சிவில் கோர்ட்டுகள் மற்றும் தீர்ப்பாயங்கள் அனைத்தும், 14ம் தேதி அந்தந்த நோட்டீஸ் பலகையில் வெளியிட வேண்டும்.

கிரிமினல் வழக்குகளில் வக்கீல்கள் வரவில்லை என்றால் 'அமீகஸ் கொரி' வக்கீல் பட்டியல் அல்லது இலவச சட்டப்பணிகள் ஆணைக்குழு பட்டியலில் உள்ள வக்கீல்களை, குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டோர் தரப்பில் ஆஜராக கேட்டுக் கொள்வது தொடர்பாகவும் நோட்டீஸ் பலகையில் தகவல் வெளியிட வேண்டும்.

வழக்கில் ஆஜராவதற்காக மாற்று ஏற்பாடுகளை செய்யும்படி குற்றம்சாட்டப்பட்டோருக்கு (ஜாமீனில் இருப்பவர் கள் மற்றும் ஜெயிலில் இருப்பவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும்)நோட்டீஸ் அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என்று தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதன் மூலம் காலவரையற்ற போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கும் வக்கீல்களுக்கு உயர்நீதிமன்றம் மறைமுகமாக எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளது.

வேலைநிறுத்தப் போராட்டத்தைக் கைவிட வேண்டும் என உச்சநீதிமன்ற தலைமை நீதிபதி, உயர்நீதிமன்ற தலைமை நீதிபதி, நீதிபதி ஸ்ரீகிருஷ்ணா கமிஷன், முதல்வர் கருணாநிதி உள்ளிட்ட அனைத்துத் தரப்பினரும் வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்தும் வக்கீல்கள் அதை சட்டை செய்யாமல் உள்ளனர்.

தமிழக டிஜிபி, போலீஸ் கமிஷனர் உள்ளிட்ட காவல்துறை அதிகாரிகளை மாற்றினால்தான் பணிக்குத் திரும்புவோம் என அவர்கள் பிடிவாதமாக கூறி வருகின்றனர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் வக்கீல் உள்பட 22 பேர் குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

இது தொடர்பாக திருச்சி மாவட்ட போலீஸ் சூப்பிரண்டு கலியமூர்த்தி திருச்சியில் நேற்று நிருபர்களிடம் கூறியதாவது:-

குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் கைது

திருச்சி வண்ணாரப்பேட்டையை சேர்ந்த வக்கீல் ராஜேஷ்கண்ணா (வயது 35) என்பவர் குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் தற்போது கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார். இவர் சொத்து பிரச்சினை தொடர்பாக கே.கே.நகரில் வசித்து வந்த தனது தந்தை கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தியை (60) கூலிப்படை ரவுடிகள் ரவிச்சந்திரன் (35), தணிசாசலம் (29), செல்வம் (27), குமார் (30), ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் (24) ஆகியோருடன் சேர்ந்து கடந்த 11.1.2009 அன்று பிராந்தியில் விஷம் கலந்து கொடுத்து கொன்ற வழக்கு, கள்ளக்காதலியான வித்யாவை அடைவதற்காக தனது நண்பரும், வித்யாவின் கணவருமான வெங்கடேசனை அதே கூலிப்படையை ஏவி கொல்ல முயன்ற வழக்கு ஆகியவற்றில் கைதானவர். இந்த கூலிப்படையை சேர்ந்த ரவிச்சந்திரனும் குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

இதே போல் கடந்த 13.1.2009 அன்று பெரமங்கலத்தை சேர்ந்த 5 வயது சிறுமியை கற்பழிக்க முயன்றபோது சிறுமி சத்தம் போட்டதால் கழுத்தை அறுத்து கொலை செய்த வழக்கில் கைதான புலிவலத்தை சேர்ந்த செந்தில் (27) என்ற வாலிபரும் குண்டர் சட்டத்தின் கீழ் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார். கைது செய்யப்பட்ட 3 பேரும் தற்போது திருச்சி மத்திய சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். இவர்களையும் சேர்த்து திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் இதுவரை 22 பேர் குண்டர் சட்டத்தில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

துப்பாக்கிகள் ஒப்படைப்பு

திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் 747 பேர் துப்பாக்கி வைத்திருக்கும் உரிமம் பெற்றுள்ளனர். பாராளுமன்ற தேர்தல் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டதை தொடர்ந்து இதுவரை 538 பேர் தங்கள் துப்பாக்கிகள் மற்றும் ஆயுதங்களை சம்மந்தப்பட்ட காவல் நிலையங்களில் ஒப்படைத்துள்ளனர். மீதமுள்ளவர்கள் வருகிற 30-ந்தேதிக்குள் தங்கள் துப்பாக்கிகளை ஒப்படைக்க வேண்டும்.

திருச்சி மாநகர பகுதியில் 3 துப்பாக்கி கடைகள் உள்ளன. அவற்றில் சம்மந்தப்பட்டவர்கள் தங்கள் துப்பாக்கிகளை ஒப்படைத்து விட்டு அதற்கான ரசீதை பெற்று சம்மந்தபட்ட போலீஸ் நிலையத்தில் ஒப்படைக்கவும் அனுமதி வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள வெடிமருந்து கிடங்குகளில் துணை போலீஸ் சூப்பிரண்டுகள் வாரம் தோறும் சோதனை நடத்தி வருகிறார்கள்.

எல்லை பகுதிகளில் சோதனை

பாராளுமன்ற தேர்தலையொட்டி திருச்சி மாவட்டத்தில் தேவைக்கு ஏற்ப துணை ராணுவம், மத்திய பாதுகாப்பு படை ஆகியவற்றை பாதுகாப்பு பணியில் ஈடுபடுத்த நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும். மதுவிலக்கை தீவிரமாக நடைமுறைப்படுத்துவதற்கான சோதனைகளும் தொடர்ந்து நடந்து வருகின்றன.

தஞ்சை மாவட்ட எல்லையான கல்லணை, பெரம்பலூர் மாவட்ட எல்லையான சிறுகனூர், கரூர் மாவட்ட எல்லையான குளித்தலை ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் அந்தந்த மாவட்ட போலீசாருடன் இணைந்து திருச்சி மாவட்ட போலீசார் வாகன சோதனை உள்பட அனைத்துவிதமான சோதனைகளையும் நடத்தி வருகிறார்கள்.

CHENNAI: Two lawyers, along with eight thugs, were arrested on Sunday night at a wine shop in K K Nagar after police found a cache of deadly weapons kept hidden in the cars and motorcycles they had come in, reportedly to settle a financial dispute.

Police alleged that one of the lawyers - Ganam alias Thirugnanam of T B Chattaram - had brought the thugs on five motorcycles to the rendezvous where another lawyer, Stalin of Velachery, had fixed an appointment with advocate Saravanan of Vijaya Ragavapuram, MMDA Colony.

Stalin, who works as a junior for Saravanan, was aggrieved over his senior's refusal to pay him his share in Rs 8 lakh collected from a woman, Ragini, for settling a civil dispute in her favour through an out-of-court settlement. Besides Stalin, Hari Krishnan of MMDA Colony was peeved over Sarvanan's refusal to pay him a commission for finding litigants wanting to go in for out-of-court settlements.

The two men sought the help of Ganam, whom the police had listed as the third accused in the advocate Rajnikanth murder case of 2008, to settle their dispute with Saravanan.

With the thugs keeping guard, the two lawyers were engaged in a heated argument with Saravanan when police swooped down on them.

While Saravanan managed to escape from the scene, police arrested the two lawyers and the thugs, besides seizing the arms that included two daggers, iron rods and wooden logs from Ganam's car.

They were all released on bail later.

HIV Rate in D.C. Soars, Now 'On Par With Uganda'

WASHINGTON — At least 3 percent of residents in the nation's capital are living with HIV or AIDS and every mode of transmission is on the rise, according to a report to be released Monday by D.C. health officials.

The findings in the 2008 epidemiology report by the D.C. HIV/AIDS Administration point to a severe epidemic that's impacting every race and sex across the population and neighborhoods.

"Our rates are higher than West Africa," said Shannon Hader, the administration's director, who used to spearhead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's work in Zimbabwe. "They're on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya."

The report, obtained by The Washington Post, updates a landmark 2007 study that discovered the epidemic had moved from affecting a mostly gay population to a general one, and that it disproportionately affected blacks.

The study found that the number of HIV and AIDS cases jumped 22 percent from the 12,428 reported in 2006. Almost 1 in 10 residents between 40 and 49 are living with the virus, and black men had the highest infection rate at almost 7 percent, the report said. It added that 3 percent of black women in D.C. have HIV.

The virus was most often transmitted by men having sex with men, followed by heterosexual transmission and injection drug use, the report said.

"This is very, very depressing news, especially considering HIV's profound impact on minority communities," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Health's program on infectious diseases. "And remember: The city's numbers are just based on people who've gotten tested."

The epidemiology report warns that the true number of D.C. residents infected with HIV "is certainly higher."

Meanwhile, another study scheduled to be released Monday by city health officials looks at heterosexual sexual behavior, and attempts to dissect people's choices before they are tested for or become infected with HIV. It was conducted by the George Washington University School of Health and Health Services with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study found that three in five D.C. residents who had connections in neighborhoods with high poverty and AIDS rates were aware of their HIV status and that three in 10 had used a condom the last time they had sex, among other findings.

அடியாட்களை உடன் வைத்துக் கொண்டு வக்கீல்களையும், நீதிபதிகளையும் மிரட்டி வந்துள்ளார். வக்கீல் சங்கத் தேர்தலில் தோற்ற கோபத்தில் தன்னைக் கொலை செய்ய முயன்றதால்தான் அவரைத் தாங்கள் போட்டுத் தள்ளியதாக கைதாகியுள்ள வக்கீல் கண்ணன் பரபரப்பு வாக்குமூலம் அளித்துள்ளார்.

சென்னை எழும்பூர் நீதிமன்ற வளாகத்தில் 2 நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு மாலையில் வழக்கறிஞர் ரஜினிகாந்த் ஒரு கும்பலால் வெட்டிக் கொல்லப்பட்டார். இவரது மனைவி லலிதா, திமுக முன்னாள் எம்.எல்.ஏ செங்கை சிவத்தின் சகோதரர் மகள் ஆவார்.

ரஜினிகாந்த் கொல்லப்பட்டது குறித்து பல்வேறு பரபரப்பான தகவல்கள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன.

ரஜினிகாந்த் வக்கீல் போலவே செயல்படவில்லை. பெரிய தாதா போல வலம் வந்துள்ளார். அவருடன் எப்போதும் 10, 15 அடியாட்கள் இருப்பார்களாம். எதிர் தரப்பு வக்கீல்களை மிரட்டுவது, பணியாவிட்டால் தாக்குவது, மாஜிஸ்திரேட்டுகளை மிரட்டுவது என்று அடாவடி செய்து வந்துள்ளார்.

ரஜினிகாந்த் மீது சென்னை நகரின் பல்வேறு காவல் நிலையங்களில் 38 வழக்குகள் உள்ளனவாம். எல்லாம் ஆள் கடத்தல், கொலை முயற்சி, வழிப்பறி என பெரிய பெரிய பிரிவுகளின் கீழ் உள்ள வழக்குகள். ஆனால் எதிலுமே அவரைக் கைது செய்ய முடியவில்லை. காரணம் அவருக்கு இருந்த ஆள் பலம், பண பலம், அடியாள் பலம்.

வக்கீல்களுக்கு மட்டுமல்லாமல் போலீஸாருக்குமே பெரும் சவாலாக இருந்து வந்த ரஜினிகாந்த் இப்போடு வெட்டிக் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

ரஜினிகாந்த்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட வக்கீல் கண்ணன் என்பவரது தலைமையில்தான் இந்தக் கொலை நடந்துள்ளது. இக்கொலை தொடர்பாக கண்ணன் தவிர சத்யா, கதிரேசன், கராத்தே பாபு, ஜெயசூர்யா, கார் டிரைவர் அசோக் ஆகியோர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

கண்ணன் கொடுத்துள்ள வாக்குமூலம் ரஜினிகாந்த்தின் பயங்கர மறு பக்கத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துவதாக உள்ளது.

கண்ணன் கொடுத்த வாக்குமூலம்:

ரஜினிகாந்த வக்கீல் போலவே இருக்க மாட்டார். ஒரு தாதா போலத்தான் அவரது நடத்தைகள் இருக்கும்.

வக்கீல்களுடன் அடிக்கடி சண்டையில் ஈடுபடுவார். வழக்குகளை குழப்பி திசை திருப்பி விடுவார். மாஜிஸ்திரேட்டுகளையும் அவர் மிரட்டுவார். அவரால் பல வழக்குகள் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன, அப்பாவிகள் பலர் பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

இந்த நிலையில்தான் வக்கீல்கள் சங்கத் தேர்தல் நடந்தது. இதில் நானும், நாகராஜும் தலைவர் பதவிக்குப் போட்டியிட்டோம். நாகராஜுக்கு ஆதரவாக ரஜினிகாந்த் செயல்பட்டார்.

என்னைப் போட்டியிலிருந்து விலகுமாறு மிரட்டினார். எங்களது தரப்பு வக்கீல்களுக்கும் கொலை மிரட்டல் விடுத்தார். வாக்குப்பதிவு நாளன்று வாக்குப்பெட்டிகளைக் கடத்த தீர்மானித்து நூற்றுக்கணக்கான ரவுடிகளுடன் கோர்ட் வளாகத்தில் இருந்தார் ரஜினிகாந்த்.

இதை அறிந்த போலீஸார் பெருமளவில் திரண்டு வந்து அந்த ரவுடிகளை விரட்டியடித்தனர். இந்த ஆத்திரத்தில் என்னை வெட்டிக் கொல்ல ரவுடிகளுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார் ரஜினிகாந்த். ஆனால் போலீஸாரின் உதவியுடன் நான் தப்பிப் பிழைத்தேன்.

இருந்தாலும் ரஜினிகாந்த் என்னை எப்படியும் ஒழித்துக் கட்டி விடுவார் என நினைத்தேன். எனவேதான் அவரைப் போட்டுத் தள்ள தீர்மானித்து தீர்த்துக் கட்டினோம். திட்டமிட்டு ரஜினிகாந்த்தை கொலை செய்து விட்டோம் என்று கூறியுள்ளார் கண்ணன்.

வழக்குகளில் சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்களிடம் கட்டப் பஞ்சாயத்து நடத்துவதே ரஜினிகாந்த்தின் முக்கிய வேலையாகும். கடந்த ஒரு மாதத்தில் மட்டும் ரூ. 4 கோடி வரை கட்டப் பஞ்சாயத்து மூலம் வசூலித்துள்ளாராம். 2 கார்களையும் வாங்கியுள்ளார்.

சமீபத்தில் உயர்நீதிமன்ற வக்கீல் மோகன்தாஸ் ஒருவரையும் ரஜினிகாந்த் கத்தியால் குத்திக் காயப்படுத்தினார். இது உயர்நீதிமன்ற நீதிபதிகளையும், வக்கீல்களையும் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சியில் ஆழ்த்தியது.

இதுமட்டுமல்லாமல், ஐடி நிறுவனங்களில் வேலை பார்க்கும் ஆங்கிலோ இந்தியன் வாலிபர்கள் சிலரை வைத்துக் கொண்டு இரவு நேர பணிக்கு செல்லும் வெளி மாநில இளம் பெண்களை கடத்தி சில்மிஷங்களில் ரஜினிகாந்த் கும்பல் ஈடுபட்டதாகவும் கண்ணன் கூறியுள்ளார்.

இதற்கிடையே, எழும்பூர் கோர்ட் வளாகம் வன்முறைக் களமாக மாறி வருவதாலும், அடிக்கடி இங்கு அடிதடி நடப்பதாலும் கோர்ட் வளாகத்தில் 24 மணி நேர பாதுகாப்பு போட தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

United Arab Emirates: Too high, too fast: the party's over for Dubai: Western expats flee leaving luxury cars at airport, but construction workers are real losers

Arab tycoons wrapped in traditional headscarves sipped fruit juice cocktails as they watched Russian models twirl in silk dresses. It was the most exclusive ticket in town, a private catwalk show to which the Middle East's biggest spenders had been personally invited. But if the smiles at this week's Dubai fashion event looked more false than usual, it was for a reason. The net worth of the VIPs in attendance today is a fraction of what it was six months ago.

A six-year boom that turned sand dunes into a glittering metropolis, creating the world's tallest building, its biggest shopping mall and, some say, a shrine to unbridled capitalism, is grinding to a halt. Dubai, one of seven states that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is in crisis.

So too are British expatriates. Many of the estimated 100,000-strong community came here expecting to make millions in property, and to soak up a lavish lifestyle living alongside footballers, actors and supermodels. But the real estate bubble that propelled the frenetic expansion of Dubai on the back of borrowed cash and speculative investment has burst. Many westerners are being made redundant, or absconding before the strict legal system catches up with them.

Half of all the UAE's construction projects, totalling $582bn (pounds 400bn), have either been put on hold or cancelled, leaving a trail of half-built towers on the outskirts of the city stretching into the desert. Among the casualties is the tower Donald Trump promised would be the ultimate in luxury, a $100bnresort complex by the beach, and four huge theme parks and an artificial island developed by the state company Nakheel.

It is not all bad news for Dubai: the building projects still in play are almost the equivalent of the US stimulus package. And the city remains a haven for super-rich sheikhs, billionaire hedge fund managers and Russian oligarchs. But banks have stopped lending and the stock market has plunged 70%. Scrape beneath the surface of the fashion parades and VIP parties, and the evidence of economic slowdown is obvious. Luxury hotels are three-quarters empty. Shopkeepers in newly built malls are reporting a drop in sales. In Dubai you expect to see a Ferrari parked beside a Rolls-Royce. But not, as is the case now, with scruffy For Sale signs taped to the windows.

Living the dream

Nowhere sums up the fortunes of expatriates in Dubai quite like Palm Jumeirah, an artificial island fanning out into the Persian Gulf, populated by residents including the likes of David Beckham, Michael Schumacher and even, it is said, Afghanistan's president, Hamid Karzai.

At the top of the island stands the Atlantis, a garish $1.5bn hotel complex with 1,539 rooms and a whale shark swimming in a million-litre fish tank. The Atlantis's $20m inauguration celebration, where the world's A-list celebrities were treated to 1.7 tonnes of lobster and 1,000 bottles of Veuve Clicquot, was promoted as the world's biggest party. For Palm residents, it was followed by an equally impressive hangover. The value of their villas and apartments on the Palm fell by as much as 60% in just a few months.

"Drink your last cocktail and get out of here," said Sasha Reynolds, a 33-year-old cabin attendant. "My boyfriend is an engineer and work has dried up. He's been offered work in Qatar but who wants to go there ?

"People are still making money here but the parties aren't quite the same. I'm lucky - I didn't buy."

The exact number of unemployed is not known. The Dubai government does not release figures, and prevents the press from running stories that damage the economy, such as articles about mass redundancies.

But there were sacked expatriates - bankers, lawyers and architects - in all but one of the hotel bars visited in Dubai this week. Employees who lose work in the UAE automatically have their visa rescinded, generally giving them 30 days to leave.

"I look out of my balcony every day and I see Brits by the pool on their laptops," said Andrew Hillocks, 29, a sacked telecoms consultant whose passport has been seized. He will be escorted to the airport next week. "They're looking for work that just isn't there. I sold my car to cover my loan, but other people are panicking," he added. Under Dubai's strict legal code defaulting on debt or bouncing a cheque is punishable with jail. Any expatriate in financial difficulty knows the safest bet is to take the next outbound flight.

At the airport, hundreds of cars have apparently been abandoned in recent weeks. Keys are left in the ignition, with maxed-out credit cards and apology letters in the glove compartment. Officials put the number of vehicles at 11. "No one believes that. There are 11 cars abandoned just on my street," said Anne, 26, a fashion editor from London. "Over the past two months I've been getting an email a day from people trying to sell their stuff. 'New Jaguar - need to sell before the end of the week'."

In a world of self-made millionaires and property entrepreneurs, some remain bullish. Simon Murphy, 42, runs the exclusive Crest of Dubai social club for Palm residents. "My job is to keep people smiling," he said. The former hedge fund adviser's apartment is a "boy's paradise". Beside the snooker table and darts board are photos of him beside Richard Branson, Alan Shearer and Pele. "I have the beach there. My local is that bar a couple of yards away. That's the pier where they're going to dock the QE2. People ask about the whole 'living the dream' scenario? Ain't this it?" Some people had to lose out, he said. "As they say: eagles fly with eagles. The motivating factor to come here is greed. You have to be selfish, have minimal social responsibility, and want to make money quick.

The invisible losers In Dubai however, the losers are the invisible majority. Taxi drivers from Egypt, Yemen and Iraq compete for work. Their clients often ask to go to hotel bars where, at night, they will find prostitutes from eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Expatriates from the developing world maintained Dubai's orgy of consumption during the boom years. Now they too are being forced to leave.

Perhaps those who suffer most are the construction workers from the Indian subcontinent, who have carried out perilous work on building sites earning as little as pounds 70 a month. The Indian embassy is reportedly anticipating an exodus with 20,000 seats on flights to India already "bulk-booked" for next month. Buses come to pick up 250 workers every night from one dusty street on the edge of Sonapur, a labour camp on the edge of the desert.

As night falls, the gangly silhouettes of construction workers file out of the camp gates. "There is no work," said Jasvinder Singh, 24, placing his suitcase in a pick-up truck, the words "Dubai to Delhi" taped to the side. "It has been such a drama. We came here to earn money. We are going home to see our wives but our pockets are empty." Sanjit, 44, another construction worker from Punjab, gestured angrily in the air: "We were treated badly here. We were slaves to the Arabs."

But unlike their British counterparts, construction workers from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan cannot abandon lives in the glove compartment of a 4x4. Most took loans to pay agent fees to come to Dubai, and their debts will follow them home. "I sold our land and took loans in the village to come here," said Imran Hassan, a 20-year-old Bangladeshi farmer. "I paid the agent pounds 2,000 to bring me. "He said I would earn 1,500 dirham [pounds 287] a month, but we are paid 572 dirham. When I return people in the village will want their money but I have none." A Welsh construction site manager said he had protested to his boss about the treatment of labourers. "We tell them to bring their clothes to work one day and then we send them home. It makes me feel sick. I asked why it had to be done so quickly and I was told a lot of them commit suicide and we don't want that on our hands."

Tale of two cities Dubai's future will actually be decided well away from the shimmering skyscrapers. To find out why, you need to drive 90 miles southwest along the Gulf coastline, past tiny Bedouin enclaves and shimmering desert mosques. Abu Dhabi, the oil-rich capital of the UAE and the richest emirate, has opted for a more conservative and, some say, prudent approach to growth that contrasts with Dubai's giddy expansion. But it boasts 95% of the UAE's oil reserves and more than half of its GDP, and regional experts predict it will overtake Dubai as the destination of choice for westerners in the Middle East. Dubai, which has barely a trickle of oil in comparison, is projecting a 42% increase in public spending on infrastructure projects, to compensate for vanishing private investment.

But it cannot go it alone. Abu Dhabi is increasingly expected to bail out its poorer neighbour, and the two ruling families are meeting regularly to decide how to transfer cash into Dubai's ailing economy. "The question is not if Abu Dhabi will come to the rescue, but how big it will be and how public," a source with knowledge of the negotiations said.

"Abu Dhabi cannot let Dubai sink." But Abu Dhabi has its own problems. The emirate's sovereign wealth fund -once said to be worth $1 trillion - has taken a hit in the global recession, while the lifeblood of the economy, the price of oil, is down more than 60%. Thirty miles from the capital, dust rises from the barren horizon where a six-mile-long building site is being turned into al-Raha Beach, an $18bn waterfront city, a joint venture between Aldar, Abu Dhabi's largest property developer, and Laing O'Rourke, the UK's largest construction company.

"A lot of staff have been moved over here from Dubai," said Paul, 35, a Laing O'Rourke project manager, raising his voice over the noise of JCBs. "But it is all coming to a stop here too. There are mass redundancies now. We've gone from an expat workforce of about 1,000 to about 400. There are more waves of redundancies coming this week." He said he could not be sure, but by his estimate more than half of al-Raha development had been quietly shelved. "I've not been made redundant myself but I've decided to go home in April. The wife and kids have already left. A lot of people are jumping ship before there are no lifeboats left."

Back in Dubai the following day, a Mercedes Benz snaked along the city's main street, Sheikh Zayed Road. Firas Darwish, 35, an Emirati property magnate dressed in traditional Arabic clothing, sat in the driver's seat, listening as Veronica Chapman, 65, an estate agent from Hull, recalled what the city was like when she first arrived in 1980. "No milk, no bread, no schools. It was a desert and a couple of buildings," she said. Darwish slowed the car to point out abandoned building sites where cranes stood still in the baking heat. "Here we are completely reliant on foreigners," he said. "Maybe Dubai grew too fast."

Great wealth, often built on grievous inequity, needs media scrutiny

So now, Satyam has turned out to be Jhutham. Many who, till recently, rested their heads on feather pillows in the noble pursuit of adding magic zeroes to their balance-sheets suddenly find the rougher material of jail floors scraping their ears.

What has been most touching has been the incredulity of the media at the confessions of the chairman of Satyam Computer Services. Can a karorepati actually manipulate and falsify accounts? Aren't these the good guys, propelling India to a horizon of perpetual sunshine?

The January 8 editorial in The Hindu said it all. "It passes one's understanding," it lamented, "how malfeasance of such a magnitude could escape the eyes of the auditors...that such a huge hole in the finances did not show up somewhere and could not be spotted by the numerous investment analysts. The Satyam fiasco casts a shadow over the nature of corporate governance in India."

Well, it passes my understanding how not the financial analysts but the media sat on its haunches and lapped up the story of fairy tales of success in the corporate world without any investigation into corporate practice in India. In particular, the pink press, which is supposed to be reporting from the financial ringside, seemed to have little clue that even as it was salivating at and being complicit in the successes of the wealth-makers, it was but a sniffing distance away from a tsunami-size fraud. If security agencies were caught with their pants down during the Mumbai attacks, here it was the financial papers that had their fundamentals exposed. The sight is not pretty.

There is nothing from the pink paparrazzi in recent memory that so much as hints at the impending storm. Perhaps a Rs 7,000-crore scam is just small change for financial journalists who have consistently refused to see any connection between the little zeppelins of affluence floating above the large continents of privation and misery. Our media can certainly be accused of having betrayed the trust of ordinary people and colluded in this project of marketing a flawed dream.

The intrepid P. Sainath has consistently done the job of tracking the new community of India's dollar billionaires and reporting to us on the latest inflation in their wealth. Their number has grown steadily, even as figures on poverty and starvation too refuse to decline. At last count, the combined wealth of the two Ambani brothers, for example, had crossed the hundred-billion-dollar mark. How come no financial journalist here investigates the source of such wealth? How come we take it for granted and docket the generation of such wealth with enterprise and the virtue of capitalist individualism? How come in these matters we fight shy of ideas of transparency and accountability?

Take the Ambani wealth. We all wish them well. However, should not at least a minuscule section of the media be giving us some basic details? Like how could they achieve this in all of about 35 years? Wherein lay their financial genius? They made their wealth over the carcass of the dying handloom and powerloom industry, which bowed out under assault from polyester fiber. Aided, no doubt, by official changes in textile policy; but abetted, no doubt, by some push from the Ambani enterprise. How did this affect the cotton mills? How many workers and cotton capitalists did it wipe out? How it converted cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, Chennai, Nasik and Salem into ghost towns with smoke-rimmed chimney stacks and new social tensions brought about by a defeated industrial working class? And how the land occupied by those dead mills house the new entertainment districts of those cities?

Does one have to be a Marxist to ask these questions? Is a governmental bailout plan for the rich and the greedy a "socialist" idea? Is socialism or Communism merely about state intervention? This is bizarre.There is some homework due here for the pink press.

I am reminded of Hirose Takashi, a social scientist and anti-nuclear activist, who around 1990 read in a Japanese paper that Britain had the largest number of the world's wealthy. He was curious as to how a group of islands tinier than Japan could achieve this. He got a grant, sat in the British Library and checked on the wealth of 200 of the richest Britons. He told me later that in the case of 182 of these families, he discovered they used to be poorer than church mice until a father, uncle or brother sailed to serve in India some hundred years before and how that became the source of their wealth.

There are several such stories of contemporary cash-surges waiting to be told in the Indian media, which needs to inform us not just about the wealth of the nations but also about the stealth of the nations. The financial press needs to do a little more than blowing pink-tinted soap suds.

Is Google Talking Trash to the European Commission Over Internet Explorer?

So Microsoft is again being called to the anticompetitive carpet by the European Commission (Wall Street Journal pay wall), this time over the bundling of its Internet Explorer Browser with its Windows operating system. Shocking.

In a piece detailing how Microsoft and the EC got to this point, my Microsoft Watch colleague Joe Wilcox points out that the commission started the browser investigation following a complaint filed by browser also-ran Opera.

However, he wonders whether or not Google lobbied the EC to come down on Microsoft as well. As if the EC needs to be told to go after Microsoft after 5 years of persistent opposition.

Why would Google complain about IE? Because its own Chrome Web browser is struggling to gain share versus Microsoft IE, which is at 69 percent and Mozilla Firefox, which is about 20 percent. Since September, Google's Chrome has garnered a meager 1.1 percent share of the browser market.

Google needs all the help it can get to buoy Chrome versus those rivals. If Opera can complain, why can't Google? If Moreover, if Google did in fact lodge a complaint with the EC, it would be simply repaying Microsoft the favor.

Remember, Microsoft threw a conniption when Google bid to buy DoubleClick, fighting hard to convince the Senate that the buy would make Google too powerful to fight in the market. Microsoft last year then opposed Google's agreement to partner with Yahoo over paid search for the same reasons.

Joe Wilcox has an answer for why Google should think twice about griping about Microsoft to the EC:

Some advice to Google: The cop you help to get Microsoft will one day come after you. In Sept. 2007, I warned that the European appeals court ruling against Microsoft would embolden EU regulators. Google is a bundler, too, by tying search and other services together with Chrome--and the company has monopoly-size search share in Europe. When the next chapter of the European drama unfolds, many Google may wish they had stood with Microsoft rather than against it.

While I appreciate Joe's sentiment -- it's nice to think that U.S. companies might stick together in the face of European regulators -- it's not the reality. Competition between Google and Microsoft is downright dog-eat-dog and Darwinian.

Microsoft, which has been roasted by U.S. regulators every bit as much as the European watchdogs, doesn't think twice about complaining about Google in search and advertising because it is an area where it is infinitely inferior to Google. Any little edge it can gain is a place.

Moreover, it's still doing so: According to Ad Age, Microsoft is an underwriter of a recent International Advertising Association survey concerning search-advertising competition, the Google-Yahoo deal and future attitudes about regulatory action.

Why would Google miss a chance to gouge Microsoft abroad over IE when Microsoft nary misses a chance to gouge Google over paid search at home? Just as Microsoft bows to Google in search, Google looks up at Microsoft's IE market share mountain. Turnabout is fair play.

I have no evidence Google is griping about IE in Europe, though it wouldn't surprise me and I fully expect it. Regulatory bodies would likely view complaints from a giant like Google with a grain of salt, much like they viewed Microsoft's gripes about Google. But it can't hurt to try.

I've asked Google for comment, but don't expect to hear much on this front. I won't take offense; this clandestine competitive throat-cutting is fun to dish about.
