Brother Knights,

I hope you enjoyed this past weekend, and I hope you have a safe and enjoyable 4^th of July celebration!

I just wanted to let you know the following facts:

1. The budget as presented at the June business meeting, with the minor corrections we made at that meeting, have been reviewed and OK’ed by the new officers for the next year. Thus, this will come up to a formal vote during the July Business Meeting. (see attached) If approved, we can begin to operate until that new budget.

2. The JULY Tar Heel Knight has been posted to our website. Please review it. http://kofc11234.org/THK/

3. Membership is something that everyone needs to work on. If you know of anyone interested in the Knights, grab a Form100 from our bulletin board at the church, and get them to fill it out. If you know of anyone that has submitted a Form100, but hasn’t completed and turned in a Form100, but hasn’t completed their 1^st degree, please stay in contact with them and encourage them to complete this first step to becoming a Knight. If you have any questions, please contact Andy at DGK@KofC11234.org

4. The next Business Meeting will be on July 10^th at 7:30pm in the middle trailer behind the church. These are always held on the 2^nd Thursday of every month. As always, business meetings are open to all members of the Knights of Columbus. If you have not paid your dues for last year, our Financial Secretary will be present to accept a check. If you have financial hardships and that is what is keeping you from paying your dues, that should not be a concern. Simply contact either myself (GK@KofC11234.org) or Andy.K (DGK@KofC11234.org) or Dewey.M (FS@KofC11234.org) . We commonly wave past-present dues for any financial hardships, and we will be the only ones that know of this situation, and will keep that information in confidence. Your involvement in the Knights is much more important than trying to collect past dues.

RE: K of C Road Cleanup

I’d like to personally thank everybody who participated in the road cleanup this past weekend. We had a great turnout and it was a beautiful day. Everyone had a great time and made light work of the cleanup.

Looks for updates on our next clean up in about 6 weeks, where I hope to have even more folks come by.

Gentlemen,

We are planning on doing a road cleanup on Sat, June 21^st. The plan is to meet at 9:30 AM in the dirt parking lot at the corner of old 98 and Falls of Neuse across the street from the gas station.

Hopefully we can get a big turnout and make light work of it. I will have the supplies needed with me at that time. I look forward to seeing you there. I’ll keep an eye one the weather and make a judgment call as far as possible in advance if we need to move it around. The goal is to try and get out here every 2 months. The last time it only took about an hour of our time, and that was with only 4 of us doing it. If we have a bigger turnout, we’ll knock it out even quicker.

Brother Knights,

Thank you for your support during the 2007-08 year. I have been honored to be your Grand Knight last year and to be voted back in for a 2^nd year. I look forward to helping our council to plan for its continued growth and support of our church, community, and families.

I hope each and every member continues their pledge of support which they took in becoming a Knight, and strives to get more active in our programs and events. And as always, if there is something you feel the Knights should be doing, please come to a business meeting and suggest it.

The year-end celebration and induction ceremony is being planned. We will provide more information as soon as it’s available.

KofC Business Meeting

Brother Knights,

This month’s business meeting is going to be an important one for us! For anyone who has not come to a business meeting in a while, this will be a great time to see how our council is growing, and getting more organized. Come out and see if we are doing something that you might be interested in participating in.

We meet at on Thurs (6/12) at 7:30pm in the middle trailer behind the church.

Here’s a quick review of the main events for the meeting:

- Decisions about final expenditures for 2007-08 Fiscal Year. (ie: defibrillator)

- Presentation of the proposed budget for 2008-09 Fiscal Year. (to be voted on in July)

- Voting in of the new officers for the 2008-09 Fiscal Year.

- Decisions about the Annual Knights Celebration/Induction.

- Decisions about next year’s major activities.

- Activity planning for new ways we can help our Church and local community.

This meeting should be considered a celebratory time for our council. We might have some major budgetary hurtles to get past, but we’re growing along with our parish.

NOTE: The “refreshment cooler” will be stocked, for some social time after the meeting.

Come out and celebrate with us, and see how you might get re-involved in the Knights! We’d love to see you there!

Catholic Parish Outreach

Brothers,

One of our brother Knights, Mark Kearns has asked for our help with the St Catherine Catholic Parish Outreach.

He needs volunteers to simply hand out bags for the food drive after the before\after each mass at the weekend of 14/15^th June, and again on the 21^st/22^nd . It only takes 1-2 people for each mass. It’s easy and wives, children can help too. Thus, it can be a family event… teaching your kids about the value of giving your time for others.

This is a simple, non-money draining project which provides a great service to our community.

To volunteer, please email me with your availability. I will start a spreadsheet and will try to get full coverage.

FW: Men's Ignatian Retreat, June 20-21, Avila Retreat Center

I wanted to invite you and your K of C Council Brothers to join with us for a men's Ignatian Retreat to be held on June 20-21 at Avila Retreat Center, Durham. The silent retreat will start Friday at 6 PM and close Saturday around 8 PM. Fr. Michael Proterra, S.J., stationed at St. Raphael’s, will direct the retreat, using the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Avila Center is a unique retreat environment -- a peaceful and reflective setting for meditation and prayerful walks around the wooded landscape. The $95 cost for the two-day retreat includes overnight room, two dinners, breakfast and lunch. This amount also covers food and lodging for Father as well as a contribution to the Society of Jesus.

VISIONS EOY Celebration

Brothers,

On Sunday May 4th @ 5pm there is a cook-out for the VISIONS (aka: “Youth Ministry”) end-of-year celebration. The Knights are supplying the food and serving. However, Andy Kotynski, Richard Keyser, and myself will be at a convention this weekend, and might not get back to the church in time to prepare all this stuff.

WE NEED COOKERS AND SERVERS !!!!

Yesterday I delivered 240 Hot Dogs, Buns, & Bags of Chips to the Church. They are in the Kitchen with little signs indicating they are reserved for the Visions party.

I’ll bring the KofC Aprons, but don’t know what time I’ll make it to the church.

NOTE: When we start preparing the food, please ensure there are enough cups, plates, napkins, etc.

If someone has to run to Target to get stuff, they will be reimbursed.

Pope Benedict XVI Saturday approved a decree recognizing the heroic virtue of Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The pope's declaration significantly advances the priest's process toward sainthood and gives the parish priest the distinction of "Venerable Servant of God." If canonized, Father McGivney would be the first American born priest to be so honored.
"All of us who are members of the Knights of Columbus are profoundly grateful for this recognition of the holiness of our founder," said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "The strength of the Knights of Columbus today is a testament to his timeless vision, his holiness and his ideals."
Worried about the religious faith and financial stability of immigrant families, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus with the help of several men of St. Mary's Parish in New Haven in 1882 to help strengthen the faith of the men of his parish and to provide financial assistance in the event of their death to the widows and orphans they left behind. He was also known for his tireless work among his parishioners.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., Aug. 12, 1852, Michael Joseph McGivney, was the first of Patrick and Mary (Lynch) McGivney's 13 children, six of whom died in infancy or early childhood. His parents, natives of Ireland, had immigrated to the United States during the 19th century. Patrick was a molder in a Waterbury brass mill, where Michael himself worked for a brief time as a child to help support the family.
From an early age, however, he realized a calling to the Catholic priesthood. After studying in several seminaries, he was ordained in that Baltimore's historic Cathedral by Cardinal James Gibbons Dec. 22, 1877.
He took up his first assignment, as curate at St. Mary's Church, New Haven, Conn., Jan. 2, 1878. Father McGivney was named pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Conn. in 1884. He became seriously ill with pneumonia in January 1890, and died Aug. 14, 1890 at age 38.
The cause, or process, for Father McGivney's sainthood, was opened by Hartford Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin, in December 1997. The cause was presented to the Vatican in 2000, where it has been under review by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. With the pope's recent decree, and the authentication of a miracle at Father McGivney's intercession, the priest could be beatified. A second miracle would be required for canonization.
Still maintaining its headquarters in New Haven, the Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic Fraternal Organization with more than 1.7 million members in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean islands, the Philippines, Guam and, most recently, Poland.
