The Beavers and Cub will be joining forces on 16 September, in Maynooth College North Campus, for some fun and games. The purpose of the day is to introduce the beavers who are swimming up to cubs, to the cubs and their leaders. Although this is a link event, all beavers are welcome, as it is a good opportunity for everyone to get reacquainted after the long summer break.

Today marks the 100 Anniversary of Robert Baden Powell starting the first Scout Camp on Brownsea Island. From all those in 8th Kildare Scout Group Maynooth we would like to wish all those in scouting a Happy Birthday and to all those not in scouting, well... You don't know what your missing!!! :-)

Made it safe and sound to an island in the middle of the Rhein river in Germany. All is going well.

Starting from tomorrow, the Ventures will be on annual camp in Germany. They will be hiking along the river rhein following the rhein steig (http://www.rheinsteing.de ). During the week of hiking and camping they will travel between Wiesbaden and Koblenz a distance of about 150 km. The rheinsteig is a mountainous trail, so its going to be fairly challenging.

Carrying everything on their back this will be great training for events like the challenge and the explorer belt. We'll have to see if the leaders can keep up!

Bag Packing

We have a new emblem in Scouting Ireland. At the National Council on the weekend the above emblem was agreed.

Have we found a new Emblem?

With the count-down to National Council '07 well underway, the hard working Emblem working group have released several proposals from all parts of the organisation (from cubs to leaders) to choose from. For those not in the know, we currently don't have an emblem (except if you count the international scout symbol) for our organisation. The SI logo is our "commercial" face to the outside world, and can be changed to suit current thinking. The emblem is meant to be timeless and embody something of who we are. The following are the proposals with an explanation of what they represent:

Option 1: This design is based on a knotted rope that forms the shape of a shamrock. The knot is a friendship knot (also known as a square knot). The interlacing of the knot is somewhat Celtic in style too.

Option 2: This option incorporates two elements of the former association’s emblems; the Celtic knot from the SAI – now also representing Scouting – and the shamrock from the CSI – now representing Ireland. Both elements are redrawn with equal weighting for each and merged together to form the central piece of this emblem. They are then held together as one in a symbolic neckerchief /cupped hands.

Option 3: A shamrock representing Ireland centred over a distinctive fleur-de-lis to represent Scouting. The proposal is not overstylised to give a sense of being timeless. The proposal will work well in a one or multiple colours.

Option 4 is a neckerchief containing a modern slant on the Harp. These 2 symbols represent Irish Scouting.

Option Five is based on a redrawing of the fleur-de-lis inspired by Celtic swirls to give it an Irish touch. It is drawn in a way that is not overcomplicated but still not too simplified to lose the sense of timlessness associated with an emblem.

Option 6: While the purpose of the emblem is not to replace the logo (which will continue to be used as the logo no matter what is chosen as our emblem) the idea behind this option is to also have this design as the emblem. There would be no difference between where we would use the emblem – such as on the items mentioned above – and the logo.

Option 7: This design draws inspiration from Ireland's ancient Celtic heritage and our proud scouting tradition. It is formed from a simple Celtic knot which has no beginning or end, signifying continuity and equality in scouting and our sense of Irishness. It is intertwined with the WOSM rope, with the Fleur De Lis at its centre, showing our close relationship with the wider scouting community.

Ventures on Bray Head

On Saturday 7th April 2007, the Ventures hiked Bray Head as a Warm up for Germany. The day was full of "Treaherous" lipping land and floating fences. It was only through sheer skill that they got to the end...

Scout Stamps celebrating 100 years

An Post and Scouting Ireland have announced the production of two stamps celebrating 100 years of Scouting. The stamps are part of a European run, where each country will produce their own version. The Irish Stamps were choosen to show the "now and then" aspect of Scouting in Ireland. They will be available for sale from May 9th.

Skiing across Greenland to support Scouts in Lebanon

Check out these guys. They will complete a 570km unsupported ski crossing of the Greenland icecap to celebrate 100 years of Scouting and raise funds to help Scouts rebuild Lebanon.

As they put it:
"we will have to carry all our food, fuel and equipment to enable us to survive in this harsh climate for up to 4 weeks. We will ski east to west over Greenland which is the second biggest ice cap in the world and each day we will be aiming to cover between 20 and 30 km. All of our food, fuel and equipment will be pulled behind us on Pulkes"

Ventures do Sligoooooooooo

The Ventures took a road trip to Sligo to find out what a certain westerner was raving on about? ;-) After trekking the high roads and byroads of the county it was agreed that it was a great weekend. Thanks to the 2nd/3rd/10th Sligo for all their help! Joe, you're d man!

Johnny Dowling - Recognition at last!

Today Cill Dara Scout County Awarded Johnny Dowling the Bronze Meritorious Award for his excellent long service to Maynooth and to Scouting in the North Kildare area. Johnny is the current Group Leader in Maynooth and member of the County Management Committee. From all in the Maynooth Scout Group we would like to say a big Thank you and well done to you Johnny!

Cub Hike on Sunday

There will be a Cub Hike to Kildare Wood on this Sunday, 17th September. We will be meeting at the Scout Den at 10:45 and then we will hike along the canal to Kildare Wood. There, we will be having some fun and games to kick off the New Scout Year. We will also be having a Bar BQ and hope to finish at 5pm. There is no charge for the day but please bring:

1) Waterproof clothing with a reflective band
2) Kneckerchief (Uniform is not needed)

Here ye, here ye! Scouting is starting back so you'd better make sure your name is in and registered! We will be in touch with you over the coming weeks about what's on for the year. Beavers and Cubs are back next week on Monday and Tuesday respectively. All you scouts and Ventures will have to wait a few more weeks to meet up and chat about "all d gos" from camp and the summer! Duckie on Tour with the Ventures!

Heidelberg will never be the same after the Maynooth Three Musketeers hit it! They hiked along the River Neckar running into many "This'll be Great!" adventures! Duckie guided them along the way and kept the spirits high. Thanks Duckie! You're the Best!

Scouts were a Norjammin!

Norwich was the venue and Norjam was the reason. 17 Maynooth Scouts joined with over 5000 scouts from all over the World in this event. With over 110 activities going all weekend there was no time to think about the Weather. We just soaked up the Sun!! Check out the Norjam website and try and find our scouts!?
