A friend of the family was laid off around the same time I was and she was able to receive funding through the Plymouth Career Center, so she didn't have to pay anything out of her own pocket.

Fast forward a few months and I have bounced around various career centers more times than I can count. As it turns out, all of the career centers with the exception of Boston are out of funding. So I got to a Boston career center today, because I worked in Boston so I might be eligible through them. Alas, no such luck. If you have a 4 year degree you aren't eligible. WTF? But I FINALLY managed to get some helpful information, and now have an appt at the career center in Newton on Thursday. They received a national emergency grant to help dislocated financial services workers so I am praying that I can finally get the information and help I need.

Failing that, maybe I'll become a photographer :) Here is a picture of the Boston skyline I took in August.

I'm SIIIIIICCCCCCCCKKKKKKKK

I have a terrible cold and I hate it. My head is killing me, my nose is all stuffy. Booooooooo. I am at the library trying to job search and I am about to give up and go curl up on my couch. I hate this.

Oh well. Halloween was fun, I was a cowgirl. My friends and I met at the Bar Room for a few cheap drafts, then went to Clarks for a bit, and then back to The Bar Room for dancing. Good times. When I got back to my car there was a black t-shirt on my windshield. Curious. I wonder what series of events took place to lead somebody to take off their shirt and leave it on my windshield? I suppose I'll never know :)

On another note, I may have a job! My sister works for a financial services company in Boston, and she knew of a manager in a different dept that was looking for a temp to help out, so she forwarded the woman my resume. I went in on Thursday for a "very informal" meeting to meet her and have someone in her area show me what I'd be doing. The company's temp agency called me Friday and said she wanted to move forward for me, so I had to fill out an application. Now I'm just waiting for my background check to clear. Woohoo! And the manager told me that she expects this temp position to turn into full time, so here's to hoping!

Target, Anyone?

I don't have much time, I am meeting friends for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory today, but I just have to say I went to the BEST Target in the world yesterday. A perfect gentleman, we never ran out of anything to talk about, he held doors for me, he paid for my drinks, he even drove me home even though he had it made him be about 40 minutes out of his way. As soon as I walked in the door he sent a text "Do you miss me yet?" and called me on his way home, we talked for another hour. He called me last night too when I got home from work and we talked for almost two hours. I haven't felt such chemistry with somebody in a very long time, even my last boyfriend. And I have way more in common with this guy than my last boyfriend. It's nice to have somebody who actually wants to talk to you and you can have such a long conversation with. We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, which I have always wanted to do, walked around Brooklyn Heights, I showed her the neighborhood in Harlem she'll be living once she starts subletting (it was right next to the church I used to tutor in, so I am familiar with the area), finally went to Shark Bar (I have been meaning to check it out since before I even lived there), went to Bar 89 for a FANTASTIC cheeseburger again, tried out a new club, met a friend for brunch, and went to Dylan's Candy Bar.

FYI to anybody reading this--Bar 89 (on Mercer Street in Soho) has the best cheeseburgers I have ever had. No lie. They are SO effin' good. And their drinks are amazing too.

I love NY. Sometimes I think I should move back there. It's so much fun, and there's so much to do. And now that another friend of mine will be moving down there, I'll know a few people. It's something to think about anyways. I am also considering a position in Tampa, FL (although, I haven't been offered the job yet, I still need to have a second interview). I just need a change, I think. I am job searching right now, then it's back home and I am going to go walking/running. I have a coffee date tonight, I rescheduled it from yesterday cause my ass was too tired to deal. I had NO energy yesterday. None at all. It's better today though.

I am working tomorrow and Sunday though, so I need to take my relaxation where I can get it. I am not going to be drinking tonight either :) I need to slow my roll and not spend so much money! Although, as I have mentioned before, I am a huge fan of Jen Lancaster's books, and in one of them she mentions a Tuesday Afternoon Drinking Club. I think that is a great idea! So if anybody who is unemployed and is reading this wants to join me, hit me up. It would be good times.

Finally...A Day Off

I feel like I am constantly running around everywhere trying to do a hundred things at once. So today (and tomorrow), I am taking some ME time :) Today I ran some errands, now I am job searching at the library. When I get home I am going to go running, then sit on my couch and watch my mindless DVR'd shows and I'm gonna LIKE IT! I was supposed to have a coffee date today but I rescheduled cause I really need to relax. I think we'll meet up tomorrow. This weekend my roommate's friend from home is visiting so after I get off work on Saturday, a few friends and I are going to meet up with them and go out in downtown Boston. Ahhh...let the corruption begin!

I made cheeseburger meatloaf on Tuesday and if I do say so myself, it came out pretty good. It's a Racheal Ray recipe. However, when I make it again I think I'd cut the amount of cheese in half. As it is I used less than the recipe called for (I only had 5.25 oz instead of 8) and it's a LOT of cheese. I think four ounces would be just fine.

RACHEAL RAY'S CHEESEBURGER MEATLOAF:

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for greasing
1 red onion, finely chopped
2/3 cup ketchup
2/3 cup bread crumbs
2 large eggs
1/2 cup bread-and-butter pickle chips, chopped
1-1/2 pounds ground beef
8 ounces cheddar cheese, cut into 1/3-inch cubes

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 400°. Lightly oil a rimmed baking sheet. In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring until slightly softened, about 3 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the ketchup, bread crumbs, eggs and pickles; mix in the onion. Crumble in the beef, add the cheese and mix together. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet and shape into a 4-by-12-inch loaf (I just used a loaf pan). Bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 160°, about 35 minutes.

Let the meatloaf rest for 5 minutes before slicing

Just a Warning...

$1.50 drafts may sound good in theory, but when you decide to drink many of them cause hey, they're cheap, it leads to NOTHING BUT TROUBLE :)

I'm Baaacckkk

Well, Baltimore was a great time. Cheap drinks, good music, cute men, and a baseball game! What more could a girl ask for? Men down there are MUCH more complimentary and confident than men up here. I was told I was incredible, gorgeous, amazing, beautiful, and a babe. Maybe I should move down there :)

There's a place called Power Plant Live! that's a great concept. There's about 10 different bars and clubs in the same area, with a common area outside with a stage. Thursday nights they have 5 Ways Thursdays--you pay $10 and you get a bottomless cup that you can bring in 5 of the bars there. Good times! We went there Friday night too to meet up with a friend of mine, and hung out all night. A very good looking man that buys me drinks all night is my idea of a good time!

I am off to job search and then go to happy hour. $1.50 drafts is the name of the game tonight.

Baltimore Here I Come!

Tomorrow I leave for Baltimore/DC. I am pretty excited. I NEED a vacation. Hard core. Seriously, I do. Working in retail stressed me the eff out. What is wrong with people? In what world do you think it's okay to try on like 20 things at a time, and leave them all over the floor, not even on hangers? That is NOT OKAY. Not even a little bit. Just because somebody works in retail does not make them your made. Clean your shit up.

So anyhow, I am staying at the Days Inn Inner Harbor. Party time! I found a place nearby that is $10 for unlimited drinks from 10 pm to close on Thursday nights. And that? Is a good time all around. My friend and I are also going to the Orioles game on Friday night. I might wear my Red Sox shirt to it even though they aren't playing the Sox, cause I am contrary like that. Yeah!

Completely unrelated to Baltimore, but I made Cheesy Pizza Casserole from my Betty Crocker cookbook last week. It was pretty good. I used fresh mushrooms instead of canned ones cause that's what I had, and I didn't put olives in cause I detest olives. I did put in some salt-packed capers instead.

I can't find the recipe online, but it's half a pound of ground beef, cooked, mixed with a jar of pasta sauce, a small can of sliced mushrooms (drained), olives, and 3 cups of cooked pasta. You mix it all in a 2 1/2 quart casserole, cook for about 30 minutes (covered) in the oven at 350, then add mozzarella cheese (I used a combination of Trader Joe's light mozzarella and some shaved parmesan), and bake uncovered for about 5 more minutes.

3 Men, So Little Time :)

Okay, so I broke up (well, completely, it was dragged out over some time) before I went to Hawaii. But we're still friends and hang out occasionally (STRICTLY platonically, I might add). Much to his dismay. But what-the-fuck-ever, you screw up, you pay the price. The price being losing me.

And then I have a date tomorrow, with somebody I went to dinner with last week. He's a nice guy, in the Army, lives alone, has a nice car. It seems to be promising.

However, I have a friend who lives in Baltimore. He is EXTREMELY attractive. Seriously. And we are going to be hanging out when I go down there in a few weeks. He and his friends are going to be taking my friend and I out on the town. And since I quite possibly will be very drunk while I'm down there, there is a definite possiblity that I could perhaps make out with him. A strong possibility. And according to an old wives' tale, he is actually my future husband. So I can make out with him and not feel bad :)

To explain, I was told if you put a red rose petal under your pillow, the person you dream about that night is the person you will marrry. And that's who I dreamnt about. TWICE. And I have never dreamnt about him before that, or since. So I know who I am going to marry. Wedding invitations to be forthcoming soon!

The problem is, none of the three can know about each other. But you know what? There's no ring on my finger. Seriously? WTF??? It's 63 degrees outside in Boston. Not that I like really hot weather, but 75 degrees and sunny would be nice. Aw well. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow, but I gotta work today, tomorrow, Sunday, and all day Monday. Gotta make money!

So I have been trying to save money since I was laid off by not eating out as much, and trying to cook more at home. I used my Penzeys Taco Seasoning and made tacos the other day--lean seasoned ground beef, mild salsa, and shredded lettuce on a flaxseed and whole weat wrap. It was really good, and low-fat.

That's all for now, I have to go home and make some lunch, then head to work.

More Food :)

It's no secret I heart Trader Joe's. As a matter of fact, I do most of my grocery shopping there. They have great frozen stuff, good vegetables, and apples are the cheapest there than anywhere else I've been able to find.

So I bought some of their lobster ravioli (found in their fresh prepared foods section) and doctored it up. With some Ragu garlic and onion pasta sauce, salt-packed capers, and mushrooms, it was so good.

And while we're talking about food, let me rave about the sandwich I had at the Kona Brewing Company at the Honolulu airport. Delicious. It was called the Imu Pork, which was kalua pork with their own Porter BBQ sauce, roasted red onions, cheddar, and provolone, served with fries. I enjoyed every bite. I had the Wailua Wheat beer with my sandwich, which was also great.

Adventures In Cooking

So since I am poor I didn't join my friends on their July 4th camping trip down on the Cape. Instead I stayed home and worked at my pt job. I didn't have to work on July 5th though, so I used my spare time to try a recipe from the Betty Crocker cookbook I got for Christmas a few years ago. It's the best cookbook, every recipe I have tried has turned out good. This time I tried the shrimp and peapod casserole (with a few changes, noted below). It turned out really good.

Betty Crocker's Shrimp and Peapod Casserole

3 cups uncooked penne pasta (I used whole wheat pasta)

1/2 cup butter or margarine (I only used a third of a cup)

2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1/2 cup all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

2 cups milk (I used skim milk)

1 can (14 ounces) chicken broth (I used fat free broth)

3/4 cup shredded Fontina or Swiss cheese (I only used 1/2 cup)

1 pound cooked, peeled, deveined medium shrimp, thawed if frozen

2 cups frozen sugar snap pea pods, thawed and drained (I used fresh pea pods)

1/4 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup sliced almonds (I omitted this)

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray 13 by 9 inch glass baking dish with cooking spray.

Cook and drain pasta as directed on package.

Meanwhile in 4 quart saucepan or Dutch oven, melt butter over low heat.

Cook mushrooms and garlic in butter, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are tender.

Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth and bubbly.

Gradually stir in milk and broth until smooth. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.

Stir in Fontina or Swiss cheese until melted

Remove from heat. Stir pasta, shrimp and pea pods into mushroom mixture. Pour into baking dish.

Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and almonds.

Bake uncovered 20 to 25 minutes or until cheese is golden brown.

Since I'm Unemployed, I May As Well Go Out Drinking!

Today, for your amusement, I bring to you a chronological recounting of the worst hangover I have ever had. Keep in mind, I graduated college a decade ago (and not once did I ever get physically ill from drinking--yes, I am a ROCK STAR). You'd think that this would have occurred quite some time ago. But clearly I am no longer a rock star. This is sad.

One Random Tuesday Night:
12 pm: call former coworker to see if she wants to meet up for a drink before toga party
4:45 pm: meet said coworker at regular haunt across the street from former employer.
commence drinking draft beers. also have red-headed slut shot as IT person
from former employer is also at bar and offers. or maybe it was patron?
night is all a blur. but why turn down a free shot?
7 pm: 3 beers and a shot later, go to Fajitas and Ritas for dinner. consume some sort of shrimp
dish with 2 STRONG frozen margaritas
8 pm: go to Max and Dylans for another beer. PBR on draft???? bring it on!
9:15 pm: meet other friend to go to toga party. free wine!!! and free elderberry drinks! also
buy several Bud Lights. because really? all that liquor is a FANTASTIC idea on a
Tuesday night. especially when have to work at 10 am in retail the next day.
11:30 pm: leave toga party. but wait! night is not over yet. hip-hop night at Rumor? why the
hell not! go to Rumor for hip-hop. $25 entrance fee is not so bad when clearly
intoxicated.
2 am: Rumor is closing. fun times! $40 bar tab later, go home.
9 am: wake up. not so fun anymore. so hungover i think i may die. cannot manage to get off
couch until afternoon. cannot eat food until 9 pm.

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do...Or Is It???

So my ex-boyfriend and I are finally, completely done. I had been contemplating our relationship for so long that when it came time to officially end it, it didn't even make me sad. Huh. You know a relationship is over when breaking up doesn't even make you cry, no?

Oh well. So much to his dismay I am done. Apparently he doesn't want to lose me, he can't stop thinking about me, etc etc. Alas, maybe he should have thought about the consequences of his actions before he did all the shit he did. Ha.

In other news, I bought a Juicy Couture wallet to match my bag and I'm pretty psyched about it. I can't find a picture of the exact one I have, but it's similar to this (except mine is pink and brown):

Today, We Talk About Food

My love affair with Wegmans is no secret. I am so excited that a store is supposedly coming to Westwood Station. That makes my whole life. I was at the DeWitt store in March (near Syracuse) and I stocked up on my favorites from there--pierogies, egg rolls, bulk candy, potato chips, random candy bars, etc etc. I also LOVE their stir fry sauce. My friend and I ate lunch at their version of a food court, and I have to say, the Asian Wokery selections are pretty damn good for a grocery store. I really like their spare ribs, beef and broccoli, and shrimp fried rice. Yay for Wegmans!

Not related to Wegmans, I have been trying to cook more now that I am unemployed. I like to cook, and generally speaking, it's cheaper to cook than to eat out. I have made a few things, but I really like a Rachel Ray recipe I found in her "30-Minute Meals" cookbook (the first one). The recipe is below. I modified it a bit, just using one regular can of tuna and one 14 oz can of diced tomatoes, since that's what I had. I also added a tablespoon of salt-packed capers, which I think really adds to the favor of the dish.

Linguine With Sicilian Tuna Marinara (Rachel Ray)

3 T. Oh well.

I really really need a job, I am SO BORED lately. But c'est la vie, I suppose. At least I have a part time job. And I am looking into getting an accounting certificate, I figure the world will always need those! I am pretty sure the Mass Unemployment provides some sort of reimbursement for training that will provide skills you need for the job market. However, since I have a lot of education I don't know if it applies to me. I need to find out. She is freakin' hilarious. I want to live in Chicago so we can be friends :) In my days of being unemployed, I have read all four of her books, at least two times each: Bitter Is The New Black, Such A Pretty Fat, Bright Lights Big Ass, and her latest book, Pretty In Plaid. Her website, Jennsylvania, is so funny. You should all read her books and visit the site!

So I finally made it to Hawaii, but it was such a shit show getting there it was RIDICULOUS. I was supposed to leave May 13th, but unfortunately, my grandmother passed away the day before that. So obviously I postponed it (my family is close, and I was very close with my grandmother). When all is said and done, it was a blessing she is gone because she wasn't herself at all anymore, in pain, and just very unhappy. She was 92 so she lived a full life.

So I rescheduled to leave the day after her funeral. And the day before that, my friend (whom I was going to Hawaii with) had to take an emergency flight to Florida because her grandmother had a stroke and wasn't expected to make it. Luckily, she did, but once again we obviously had to reschedule.

Anyhoo, we finally made it on May 28th, and it was great. Hawaii is beautiful. Pics to come soon. My USB connection for my camera's memory card doesn't work and I have to buy a new one.

Bullet Points

6 more days til vacation!!!!

I bought a fantastic bra at Wal-mart of all places. I am normallynot a fan of Wal-mart (or Target, for that matter) for clothes/undergarmets, but I wanted a convertible bra and I couldn't find any I liked. But Wal-mart had a Fruit of the Loom bra that was about $10 so I figured it would do for now. It fits really well, so it's perfect for vacation!

I had to work the past 6 days at my part time job and I am EXHAUSTED. Retail is hard effin' work, yo.

I have kept up with the gym/working out for the past three weeks. Good times. I am hoping to keep up even while on vacation, I'm just going to try to walk a lot, and do push-ups/sit ups. The fitness center at the Hilton Hawaiian Village is $15/day, which is completely ridiculous. I'm going to bring my tennis racket, and try to play volleyball too.

Last Saturday night was my friend's birthday celebration in Davis Square and it was fun times. However, I had a liquid dinner, which was not my best idea ever, especially since I had to work for 6 hours the next day. Oh well. Shit happens. I need to practice for the mai tais, pina coladas, lava flows, and blue hawaiians I'll be drinking next week :)

I Just Need To Kick My Own Ass Into Gear!

For the longest time I have been telling myself I'll start going back to the gym more regularly. But I don't. Finally, right before I got laid off, I joined another gym right down the street from my office and was going to start going after work again, like I would when I belonged to BSC. After I quit BSC cause it was so expensive, I joined WOW. But since I have to drive there I didn't really have any motivation once I got home. However, I kept my membership there, and since I was laid off I am going to cancel my other gym membership.

However, my I found my elusive motivation and I am back in the game!!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOO for me! I am pretty psyched. I have done some sort of exercise (either powerwalking or going to the gym) 7 times in the past week and a half! Yay for me. I need to be my own cheerleader.

So my plan is to bring my running shoes and my tennis racket with me to Hawaii and keep it up. I plan on walking as much as possible, and hopefully can get myself up and powerwalking at least a few times in the morning. I do not plan on using the exercise room at the hotel cause it's $15/visit. And that? Is not such a good time. Particularly when you are laid off like me.

Also, WOW gyms have free tanning! I am not such an advocate of tanning given the recent skin cancer issues in my family, but I use sunscreen when I go, and I just want a base tan. After my trip, I won't be partaking.

15 more days to Waikiki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, The Life Of The Unemployed

Yup, I am still laid off. C'est la vie. I still have severance, and I can collect on top of that, so right now it's good times. Once my severance ends it will be not so good times. However, I have an interview next week so fingers crossed!

4 weeks from today I will be on my way to sunny Hawaii! Yay for warm weather, sunny beaches, and tropical cocktails! I am excited to climb Diamond Head too, and go snorkeling. I have almost everything I need, I just want to get some dressy black sandals and a portable DVD player (for the plane, mostly). I went to Old Navy yesterday and got some cute stuff, including this shirt I have been lusting over and am TRES excited it finally went on sale:

I think it is very Hawaiish, no? I have matching flip flops so it will be good times all around. I also got a denim skirt and some khaki capris. I also bought a Buckethead Betty tennis tote bag online that I want to use as my carry on. I got it online at http://www.slamglam.com/. And there are just no jobs out there. Aw well. I'll just have to put money away while I am able to collect and get my severance. It's gonna suck when I finally do find a full time job, I seem to fill up my days pretty easily without working!

Since I have lots' o spare time these days I went to NY for the weekend (upstate, not the city). My friend and I walked in a race to benefit rescue dogs. It was fun seeing all kinds of dogs around. Some weren't having the whole three miles though :) Later that day we went to Wegmans near Syracuse. I heart Wegmans. Details about that coming soon. On the way we stopped at the Turning Stone Casino:

It was okay, but it was no Vegas casino. You have to show an ID and get a Diamond Card, then you load cash onto it. You can't just put coins or dollars into the slot machines. While I understand their reasoning, it's kind of a pain in the ass. And I lost $25 in 5 minutes, so I threw in the towel and it was onto Wegmans. Oh Wegmans how I love thee!
