Author Talk: Dr. Bill Kerrigan and Ryan Worbs

Please join us Thursday April 23 at 3:30pm in the Muskingum College Library, to welcome Associate Professor of History Dr. Bill Kerrigan and Ryan Worbs to discuss their work on the recent publication “Muskingum College, a New Pictorial History.”

Dr. Kerrigan, Ryan Worbs and Heather Giffen worked for over a year to research this pictorial history of Muskingum College’s history and achievements. Their work spans 170 years of the student experience here at Muskingum. All three authors have a unique history with Muskingum, Kerrigan as an Associate Professor of History, Giffen as the fifth generation of her family to attend Muskingum and Worb as a current senior with ties to the town of New Concord. Please join us to hear more about the history of our College and the research process to putting together this wonderful tribute to Muskingum College.

Senior Art Exhibition Begins

The library is proudly hosting the Senior Art Exhibition of Muskingum College. Professor Yan Sun has worked diligently to bring to us the works of Senior Art majors Allyson Stone, Elizabeth Valentine and John Drubel. The works of many talented Senior Art minors are also on display.

The exhibition will remain on the Main Floor of the library from April 3rd to May 1st. An Opening Reception will be held in the library on Tuesday, April 7th from 2-4 P.M. These pieces will not remain with us long, so take the time to enjoy this inspiring exhibit.

Author Talk: Dr. Vivian Wagner

Muskingum College Library welcomes Vivian Wagner, to discuss her book “Fiddle: One Woman’s Search for Tunes, Grit, and Authenticity.”

Vivian Wagner is an assistant professor of journalism and director of the journalism program at Muskingum College. She'll be reading from her forthcoming book, FIDDLE: ONE WOMAN'S SEARCH FOR TUNES, GRIT, and AUTHENTICITY (Citadel Press/Kensington 2010). The book traces her personal journey in learning to play the fiddle, from the backwoods of Tennessee to the bayous of Louisiana. Trained as a classical violinist, Wagner finds that fiddling has something to teach her about creativity, improvisation, and survival.

Wagner received her Ph.D. in English, specializing in American literature and popular culture, from the University of Illinois in 1996, and she has taught at Muskingum College since 2003. Her articles and essays have appeared in many magazines and literary journals, including American Profile, Bluegrass Unlimited, Relish, The Pinch, The Battered Suitcase, The Kenyon Review Online, Toasted Cheese, and Vegetarian Times. She has received fellowships to the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop and the RopeWalk Writers Retreat, and one of her essays was shortlisted in Best American Essays 2007.

OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center

If you need to access a journal article that would normally be provided by the EJC, please do not hesitate to contact a librarian, and we'll do our best to provide a work-around. In particular, we except to have difficulties with off-campus access of our articles until the situation is resolved.

A message from OhioLINK Important Message to the OhioLINK community of students, faculty, and staff:

Beginning Wednesday afternoon, February 4, the OhioLINK computer disk storage system suffered a widespread, and supposedly not possible, multiple component failure affecting all major services with the exception of the OhioLINK Library Catalog. We have restored all services except the Electronic Journal Center (EJC). Restoration of the EJC remains under vigorous analysis, but unfortunately we know that any solution will not be immediate. In light of this, we are taking immediate steps to provide alternative access to the resources of the EJC through the various Web sites of the EJC journal publishers.

As noted on this page, we have immediate access to many EJC publisher sites and are working to expand access to the rest as quickly as possible. While the EJC is down, we will continue to improve this site to direct you to the proper publishers. We will also work to adjust our systems that link article citations to full text in the EJC by redirecting links to the publisher sites. We are examining every possibility to keep you connected to resources you need and to improve that connectivity as quickly as possible, while the EJC is not available.

We will keep you up to date through this Web page and the “New at OhioLINK” announcements at www.ohiolink.edu. Your local library will also always know the latest news.

The OhioLINK staff is sincerely sorry for this significant disruption in services. We remain committed, as we have since 1992, to providing high quality information resources on a consistent and reliable basis to the Ohio higher education community.

OhioLink is experiencing some technical difficulties that might not be resolved until next week. This will affect your article searches. The Electronic Journal Center (EJC) is offline. Full-text articles cannot be accessed with the Find It! button you're used to using. You can continue to use the databases for article searches.

Don't forget the possibility that Muskingum College Library may own the journal you are looking for. One of the easiest ways to check our subscriptions is to use our online catalog. Simply perform a title search like you sometimes do for books, but enter the journal name for the title.

Professor's Guide to Copyright and Fair Use

A panel of experts, including lawyers, has gotten together to create a guide that can help professors and other educators understand their rights under the 'fair use' clause of copyright.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports:

A new guide by the university's Center for Social Media offers free legal advice to clarify such issues—and its authors say that the "fair use" provisions of copyright law are more permissive than many professors may think.

Renew items before they go overdue

Remember, you can renew your books using the My Account link on any library web page. You will need to enter your name and 14 digit bar code number from the back of your Muskingum College ID to view the items you have checked out. You have the opportunity to renew books up to four times (3 weeks each time) as long as no one else has placed a hold on the book.

Click on the Checked Out Items button to view the list. Then check the box to the left of the item(s) you want to renew and click the Renew Selected button. The system will show how many times you have renewed and the new due date.

It is your responsibility to renew items checked out. If you do not renew items, fines will start to accrue (50 cents per day). If you let the item go 21 days over due, you will automatically be charged a replacement fee ($85 for Muskingum book or $125 for OhioLINK book). Detailed information about fines and replacement fees can be found on the circulation policy page.

Online library services restored

The OHIONET office in Columbus has power once again. The Muskingum College Library Catalog/OPAL Catalog are back online and available for use. Off-campus access to databases appears to be working. Electronic reserves are also available again.

Access Issues to Muskingum Catalog and Databases Due to Columbus Power Outage

The power outage in Columbus continues to impact the availability of many online library resources hosted by the OHIONET office in Upper Arlington.

The following resources are still unavailable for student, faculty, and staff use:

Muskingum College Library Catalog/OPAL Catalog, including the ability to renew Muskingum or OhioLINK items checked out
Accessing databases using the links on the Muskingum College Library web site, because they rely on the OPAL proxy server to be online
Electronic course reserves, because it requires the OPAL Catalog server to be online
Remote authentication for off-campus access to all databases, because it requires the OPAL proxy server to be online
Ability to request a book using the OhioLINK Central Catalog, because authentication requires the OPAL Catalog server to be online

The following search alternatives are still functioning, because they use the OhioLINK web site:

Three out of the four QuickSearch tabs on the Library’s home page are still operational on-campus. The Articles, eBooks, and eReference QuickSearches are working. The Books QuickSearch is not work because the OPAL Catalog server is not online.
You can find a book in our Library by using the OhioLINK Catalog Advanced Keyword Search page and choosing OPAL Libraries as the "Location" limit. You will have to view the list of libraries that own the book to determine if it is Muskingum College or one of the other OPAL member libraries.
You can access research databases (including the Electronic Journal Center and the Electronic Book Center) on-campus through the OhioLINK Databases page.

OhioLINK’s servers have been running on a backup generator since Sunday afternoon.

We will notify the campus community when these services have been restored. We do not know how long the power outage will last. The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that power may not be restored completely until this weekend.

Welcome back Muskies! Hope you had a great summer. We were very busy while you were gone. The first thing you might notice when you come into the Library is that there is a lot more space on the main floor by the computers. We took down a bunch of shelves. Stop by and check out the view.

We added/changes some databases...

Philosopher's Index
The primary research tool for philosophy. Index, abstracts, and some full text from 570 journals covering 15 philosophical research areas.

Biography Reference Bank (replaces American National Biography)
Biographical information on approximately half a million people, from antiquity to the present. This is a great resource for education majors. Your K-12 students have access to this database through INFOhio.

Consumer Health Complete
Health information written for the general public. This would be a great resource if you are looking for current authoritative information for a speech, paper, or health education project.

Science Online (replaces AccessScience)
Presents a broad range of scientific disciplines through extensive definitions, essays, diagrams, biographies, and experiments. A great resource for K-12 science education majors. Another database available to all K-12 schools through INFOhio.

World Book (replaces Encyclopaedia Britannica online...we still EB in print)
Encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, and other research tools. Yet another great resource available to K-12 schools through INFOhio. We have it set to go directly to Word Book Advanced for college level information, but there is another interface you can use when working with early childhood students.

Finally, three new libraries joined the OhioLINK family. You can now request books from Ohio Christian University, St. Mary Seminary, and the University of Northwestern Ohio through the OhioLINK Catalog.

Those are the big things that happened over the summer. We didn't get to take much of a vacation, so there aren't any beach pics. We did attend the OPAL conference at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus. Here is a snap of the closing session of the conference.
