Constructive Criticisms

Maayong aga sa inyo nga tanan! Greetings from Iloilo... the home of my favorite La Paz Batchoy, Pancit Molo, linagpang nga bangrus ginlaktan pa gid sang ginamos kag katumbal, klase-klasi gid nga uga, kag damo pa gid nga uban. Char!

I don't think I would ever have a full time reviewing all the comments in this blog especially that of the shoutbox (syagit!), so I will just post a friendly reminder to all my loving and concerned kababayans, esp Mainitnons, to please use the "syagit" responsibly and constructively.

I hope you know how.

There are many ways actually. And from the few I know and I practice, here's some tips which could maintain a peaceful and positive atmosphere, here in our respected Pidjanga Blog, and hopefully within our beloved Mainit.

DO NOT CRITICIZE IF YOU CAN'T OFFER A COUNTER-SOLUTION. Well, it's difficult. But sometimes, try putting yourselves on the shoes of the person being criticized. If it was you, how would you approach the problem? By identifying a problem and offering a solution, we answer the issues more quickly.

DO NOT CRITICIZE IF THERE'S NOTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT. This is most true if criticism is about personal appearances. For example: "Uno man sab kaw kaitom nimo, aja hinuon kahadlok an mga kabataan kun makakakita dimo". But if you focus on key aspects that are changeable, like behavior, the person can still do something about it. Example: "Amo dili kaw kakita nan tarbaho kay bayong man kaw kada adlaw".

LOOK AT YOURSELF FIRST BEFORE YOU CRITICIZE A PERSON. Aya kaw mahibayo na mas tabangunon pa kaw kaysa imo tag-atake. Look at your motives too. Is it really to help? Or you just want to attack someone? I hope your criticisms here in Pidjanga Blog are about wanting to help.

Well, that's for now folks.

I am very well pleased about the reception of fellow Mainitnons of the Pidjanga Blog especially the Shoutbox Syagit! I really feel privileged being able to provide a connection between the "community" and our Local Officials, between those abroad and those still "at home", and etc.

Let us remain responsible and constructive. Kaya natin yan! Amen!

Well, we still have to see the "quality" of these resolutions (hope to find time analyzing them) and determine whether these are also functions of "committee" meetings.

Padayon Tambayayong Mainit

My personal congratulations to the sustained public service and community development efforts of Tambayayong Mainit, Inc led by Mana Magnette Labrador. The organization, SEC registered in November 2008, envisions to afford opportunities to uplift the educational, health and nutritional, social and cultural circumstances of the underserved and challenged children, youth, women, senior citizens and special focus groups of Mainit and protection and care of the environment.

Here's one of their June 2009 activity as part of Tambabayong's regular feeding program for Mainitnon children.

Their computer literacy program has also started already with 5 computers donated straight from Pidjanga community in the United States. Additional funding has been donated too from our United Kingdom based kababayans.

250 days before elections

Even here in the Pidjanga Cbox... we can already feel that the Election Fever is on!

At 250 days before the National Elections aka the greatest fiesta in the Philippines, we have no doubt that the current officials who are still qualified to run for elections are now busy in their campaign and strategic planning. The election and campaign process is actually becoming a science with technology and systems being set strategically by each party group or individual candidates. In fact, I've read somewhere that there is already a campaign software for sale, armed with GIS-based data.

With these... can we still expect "performance" from our officials? I hope so!

But, actually, I doubt it. Niagi na sab an pila ka tuig sanan mga buyan, mahuman na an iska termino... waya'y pay ato himbaw-an na maradjaw na agi! Basin isab sobra ra kun dili nato malaong na an swimming pool, an resort, an legislative building, sanan an iban infrastructure projects dili kun maradjaw na agi. Actually, tagpabilib kita ni Mano Ramon, ni Mano Banoy, sanan nan mga konsehales, kay ini "significant" na mga proyekto.

Pero, umay agi ni Mayor, ni Vice Mayor, ni Konsehales, kun ato suataon an:
* Percent of young Mainitnons who have accessed a Day Care Center;
* Percent of households who have access to SAFE drinking water (jaon wayay coliform);
* Percent of households with sanitary toilets;
* Proportion of barangay health workers per 1,000 Mainitnons;
* Percent of Mainitnon mothers and wives who have access to safe maternal care;
* Percent decrease in major KILLER diseases including tuberculosis and schistosomiasis which arevery PREVALENT in Mainit;
*Percent of streets and public places with adequate lighting;
* Percent decrease in occurence of domestic violence (pangulata, pang abuso sa mga asawa o mga anak, etc);
* Percent of Mainitnon women and youth exposed to training programs;
* Percent of young Mainitnons accessing and completing elementary and high school education;
* Percent of Mainitnons in need who were given training on livelihood programs;
AND SEVERAL OTHER INDICATORS... nah, mapuno inin ato blog.

Pidjanga at the Urbanite Run

Nanlakip na sab kami sa dinayagan. Nan sabado, duyom, 15 August 2009, sa The Fort, nangiban kami sa Kenny's Urbanite Run - the largest night running event in the Philippines.

Paghikita nan "freedom wall", suyat dajon nan Pidjanga!

Sa Finish Line, biskan kun an ako pace 7.7 mins per kilometer (sobra ka hinay jaon kun permi na kaw dyagan), malipayon gihapon. Matud pa nan ako mga kaibanan, true winners are those "who had the courage to start the race and finish it". Char!

Sa sige lakip nan races (bisan wayay training), I learned some helpful tips. Thanks to my running group, Happy Feet. Jaon ako bakus, "hydration belt" kuno an tawag nan jaon. Sa una, 500ml na mineral water ako daya. Kuman di na kun hassle kay distributed na an weight nan mga tubig sa upat ka butangan sa belt. An isa, lipovitan an suyod!

An pinakagana na feeling jaon sa Finish Line... puro kaw huyas, na bagan na-tang-tang an tanan lipa sa lawas, arang ka-gana nan imo ginhawaan kay kaluag nan lungs, bagan an feeling mabuhi pa kaw nan 1oo years old. Makadum-dom lamang ako kan Lolo Bitoy, nuabot sija nan 108 years old.

Presko pa nan pagsugod. Nag-una ra an tijan!

During or After Magellan... the Mosende from La Coruna and Galicia, Spain

Fr. Scheurs wrote that right after the return of the lone surviving ship of the Magellan Expedition (1519-1523), the Victoria, a new Spanish fleet sailed from the port of La Coruña to the Islands of the West. The general command was given to Garcia Jofre de Loaisa, and Sebastian de Elcano as second in command. Sailing in the track of Magellan's voyage, and after hearthbreaking setbacks with one bad omen after another haunting the expedition i.e. six of the ships has sunk or disappeared from the fleet, the surviving ship, Santa Maria, reached Mindanao (chronicles suggest it was the island of San Juan, currently Siargao) on October 1526. To their astonishment, they were met by a survivor of Magellan's fleet, Gonzalo de Vigo, a native of Galicia, Spain.

In my early days of blogging, I have posted that there are places in Northern Spain named as Mosende, although, until now, I do not know whether they are political units or merely names of villages. But it seems they are equivalent to our Philippine municipalities. These are found in Lugo, Galicia Spain, and Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain. See here.

La Coruña (called A Coruña in Galician language) is also in Galicia, Spain. See here.

Last year, I found from the well-known Genealogical Society of Utah (the National Archives recommended this splendid work of the Mormons if one would want to trace its family tree), the names of Juan Mosende (1580) and Pedro Mosende (1610) coming from La Coruña, Spain (see here).

The above seem to confirm that the Mosende Family of Mainit and Placer, Surigao del Norte must have descended from the Mosende Clan of La Coruña, Spain

Written historical evidences of the relocation of Mainitnons from Daang Lungsod (currently San Isidro) to the present-day Poblacion due to the Hurricane of 1876. This was probably during the leadership (Cabeza de Barangay) of my great, great, great grandfather Don Saturnino Libarnes (see related post here). This also confirms the foundation of the poblacion as retold to me by Lolo Bitoy, Saturnino's grandson (see here).

Bagan kapaspas an panahon, upat na ka tuig inin Pidjanga Blog! My first post was 10 August 2005 (here), although I have also posted my 1993-2004 write-ups and predated them.

The blog, despite commanding a consistent 1,500++ visits (around 3,000 pageviews) per month in the last 48 months, does not generate any income. But, despite that, pyschic rewards has been quite fulfilling.

I think, one day, perhaps one year from now, a book about Mainit can be written already from the Pidjanga posts. Who wants to be among the panel of editors? Raise your hand...

I'll post a more complete list with specific links, but meanwhile, the Pidjanga Blog has so far highlighted the following... and has put our town Mainit, our Lake, and our Pidjanga on the blogosphere!

Camiguin is Magcono?

"The name Camiguin is derived from the native word "Kamagong," a tree of the Ebony family that thrives near Lake Mainit in the Province of Surigao del Norte. The original inhabitants of Camiguin were "Manobos" who migrated from Surigao. Thge old native language in Camiguin is called "Kinamiguin," which is similar to the dialect spoken in Surigao."

Pidjanga notes: To better ensure UN safety and security in Mindanao, we need to understand Mindanao culture and context. While listening to the presentations of a Muslim colleague, I noted some points for further online research: islamic presence in northern Mindanao; Caraga in the Treaty of Paris of 1898; the migration of Tausugs from Caraga to Sulu, etc. And the above link surprised me. We know that one of the famous hardwoods in our lake is the Magcono or the Philippine Ironwood. I believe this is also the kamagong... where, seemingly, Camiguin is named after.

Can anyone confirm this? Will appreciate your inputs.
