Sonairte will be closed for the day on August 6th. The Farmers' Market will take place on 20th August. Please also keep the 3rd September free for Sonairte's Heritage Day which proved to be a tremendous success last year. There will be a wood turner, long bow making, spinning, and a potter to name but a few. Please tell your friends and come along for a good days entertainment. Don't forget the picnic!

News from Sonairte. There will be a farmers market on Sunday the 16th July, 2006 from 10.30 am to 5.00 p.m. All welcome. If you happen to be up early tomorrow have a look at TV3 at about 7.55 a.m. TV3 are doing a spot about the Farmers Market in Sonairte and Mary Lou will be displaying some of the produce on sale there.

"The company also plans to increase the size of the plant from 35 metres to 45 metres and the stack from 45 metres to 65 metres. The new stack would not be visible from the megalithic Newgrange site and 'nothing would be visible other than the tip of the stack' from the site at Dowth, according to project manager Jackie Keaney. 'The facility will be operated to EU directive and EPA licence limits, ensuring that there will be no negative impact on public health or the environment. The layout of the facility will be redesigned and relocated towards the back of the site to mitigate visual impact.'"

Question about Ballygarth Castle

Recieved the following email regarding a rather technical question concerning Ballygarth Castle. Can Anyone help?

Dear Administrator, Julianstown:

Our family is descended from the Pepper family--once occupants of Ballygarth Castle. Because of this, the castle appearance (and existence) is of special interest to us.

As an artist, I am putting together a sketch (to be given to family members) of the castle based upon photographs taken by my son--who visited Ireland two years ago, and a small book of lineage, titled "Descendants of Captain Daniel Pepper of South Carolina". The latter contains a (dim) set of photographs taken in 1974 by a close relative.

As I was working, I realized that it is impossible to determine (from my photographic sources) whether the two architectural features at the extreme ends of the building facade project outwards from the building or are flush with its surface. Thus, I am writing to you to ask this question of you or an associate.

To further clarify what I'm asking.

As far as I can tell, only one crenellated turret projects from the building. It is located to the left of the entrance door as you view/face the facade of Ballygarth Castle. The crenellated turret to the right of the entrance door is flush with the facade of the building. My question: Do the crenellated turrets at the ends of the facade (extreme left turret and extreme right turret) also project out several inches from the building exterior? or are they flush like the turret to the right of the door?

Interesting report on the RTE news last night where the government is planning to ban trucks from Dublin city centre and supertrucks from the country outright. If they can do it Dublin why can't they do it in Drogheda/East Meath?

Also this quote from the Minister was enlightening

"It is not compatible to have heavy goods vehicles travelling at peak times with commuters whether that be the motor car, cyclist or pedestrian."

Obviously this doesn't hold in Julianstown or Drogheda!

ESB Standing Charges Rip Off

ESB Standing Charges

Noticed this while doing a bit of research before Pat Rabbitte's visit. Basically the ESB charges a rural and an urban standing charge, presumably to reflect the extra cost off providing a service in a rural area. However it has transpired that the ESB was charging the higher rural rate of €92 in places such as Grangerath and the large estates in Stamullen. The urban rate is €54, but the definition of rural and urban is fuzzy.

I checked my bill and lo the charge was at the higher rate despite living in the centre of the village. I would urge residents, especially those in newly built estates to check their bills as outlined in the link above.

Thanks to everyone who supported Sonairte's Farmers Market.
It was such a success that we are holding another Farmers Market on Sunday 23rd October between 12pm and 4pm in the main hall at Sonairte. The market will again have stalls with tasty, fresh food grown or produced locally. The centre will also be open to the public, with a cafe, ecoshop and nature trail.

Village traffic volumes same as M1

Recent results for NTR published in the Drogheda Independent September 16 reveal an astonishing fact:

The traffic volume in Julianstown is almost the same as that on the newly opened M1.

NTR, the company which operates the M1, West Link and East Link tolls made revenues of €24M and profits of €13M in the first 6 months of this year. The Drogheda Independent reported that revenues from the M1 toll were €9M or €50,000 per day for the first 6 months of 2005. Furthermore while revenues increased 25% profits rose by almost 100%.

Taking into account the cost of tolls and assuming 10% HGV traffic, this means that around 25,000 vehicles per day use the toll. We have already pointed out that based on NRA figures almost 21,000 vehicles per day are passing through Julianstown. In other words there are only 4000 less vehicles in Julianstown, a small village than on the state of the art €200M motorway. When you consider that there are 4 lanes on the M1 and the speed limit is more than double that in Julianstown, this means that Julianstown is 4 times more congested than the M1.

What makes things worse for villagers is that the contract for the toll obliges the operator to maintain the M1, Julianstown has to rely on cash strapped Meath County Council to look after the former N1 which was downgraded to the regional R132. According the the Council's 2003 annual report it spends 20 times less on the county's 297 miles of R roads than National primary routes such as the N2 and N3.

Something needs to be done!
