is in Reading East again according to his Westminster Diary column - he chose it to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the NHS. Please please - why not do a stunt in his own constituency or if it really was the Labour Party nationally and not him who had the idea why not do it in a Labour constituency? I only ask.

See that he is on about Ryeish Green School again. What does he think about Reading Borough Council's refusal to keep the school open by accepting Wokingham's offer to give it to Reading to run?

this link was kindly posted. The bald bloke is Malcolm Powers, who used to work for me and who I believe is currently the Regional Director of the South-East Region of the Labour Party. His (Powers') wife is the duplicitous Kathryn Peak, former close friend of John Howarth (prop. Public Impact Ltd) who (Peak) is a police officer in Bracknell these days I am told. Mr Salter failed to vote on this. See the vote here. Now perhaps he had something more important to do, a photocall in Reading East for instance - or perhaps he meant to make a principled abstention. After eleven years in Parliament you would think he would know that there is a perfectly good way to do this and it is to vote in both the lobbies, which is what, I notice, Bob Spink MP did.

appears to have occurred at Reading Borough Council. My man in the officer corps tells me that there was a private briefing for councillors ahead of the publication of the "Briscoe report" on Reading's transport, commssioned in the wake of John Howarth's scuttling for cover from the wrath of the electorate of Park ward (they got a Tory councillor who was beaten up before the election by Salter's hired thugs) and the desperate attempt by Dictatorship Dave Sutton to hold on to power Mugabe style (he got trashed by a LibDem). Nothing wrong with a private briefing for councillors of course, but I am told that Josephine "Zim One" Lovelock wanted it for Labour councillors only and was told no, it would have to be all party now that Labour does not control the council. Josephine Zim One is keen to seem to be a break with the old regime, and has had Anneliese Dodds released from the Singleton-White attic. Alas though, Anneliese was invited to, and attended, the councillor briefing, but other PPCs were not invited. Oh dear oh dear. You didn't ought to have done that Josephine. The Austrian connection to the Zim One household in Kentwood seems to be emerging too - Cllrs Epps and Benson were seen some weeks ago descending into the Lovelock-Ruhemann cellar and have not been seen since, not even at last week's crucial council meeting.

here is Eve Garrard's resignation letter from the UCU, university lecturers' union. I heard her speak once and she was very good. If you are a member of this union then I would urge you either to resign or campaign hard to get this racist policy changed. If you are a student I would urge you to refuse to be taught by any member of this union unless they can convince you othat they are campaigning to get the policy (of condemning Jews for being Jews) changed. That is what I believe. Is racism wrong unless it is against Jewish people?

I am sorry David is leaving Parliament, he is a good MP and a good man and Parliament will be the poorer for his going, as will the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. I am getting very tired of the media nonsense about this resignation, and people adding to it on labourhome should shut up and should be ashamed of themselves. Sorry David that you are not well, and I hope life outside Parliament helps you recover.

although I am a Germanophile I was pleased with last night's result. We watched most of it in Paddy Whelan's pub in Riga, on a feed from Russian TV, missed a chunk of the second half because significant other Is Always Right and so thought we should get the bus (the last one had gone) back to our hotel rather than the trolleybus (which runs later, as I knew). We are back in Riga this week, and I was sad to leave our Hansel and Gretel cottage in the forest by the Baltic , though significant other called it a shed. I leave Riga by Air Baltic to Paris, then onward flight to Strasbourg, on Saturday, significant other goes to London as he is working in the UK this summer. Ah, lonely times...

where was Mr Salter in this "rebellion"?

personally I don't think the Ryeish Green teachers have a case for constructive dismissal as HIs Master's Voice suggests they might - but where was Mr Salter, a "tireless campaigner" to keep the school open, who told Reading Labour Party in my presence that John Redwood was supporting "his campaign" to keep the school from closing? Is he supporting the teachers? Or not? We heard in that publication that he was "going to raise the issue in the House". We haven't heard any more about that. Might it be because by yelling about Ryeish Green he would be undermining the education of children in south Reading that he represents? He took Tory John Madejski's shilling to become a governor of the Madejski Academy in his constituency but has had nothing to say about that school, which is already on special measures after being open less than a year, but whose existence made the closure of Ryeish Green inevitable. . Doesn't that school deserve his support? And was he in agreement with the offer made by Wokingham council in 2002 to hand Ryeish Green over to Reading Borough Council?

this is getting so tedious. He keeps telling us that he is "leading rebellions" and then that he is calling them off because he has received "assurances" from government ministers. this from the Times:

Martin Salter, one of the MPs who has led the rebellion, said last night that he had been given reassurances that Alistair Darling would look at the proposal again before its introduction next year. “I would like that assurance before the House rises for the summer recess,” he told The Times.

so what did he do to "lead the rebellion?" Exactly? Huh?

Third party? But your party is in government, you hold more seats nationally than the rest of the parties put together. Your vote wasn’t squeezed either, it was a simple case that the electorate in Henley do not want New Labour.

at the drubbing Basher McKenzie and the Labour Party received in Henley - Basher is less popular than the BNP, but I see was happy t0 share a platform with them, something the Labour Party used to have a policy of not doing. Oh well. The Tory panic is at the notion that this defeat might spur a move to boot Gordon out, and he is of course a great electoral asset for them. The dead trees are saying variously that Martin Salter was "put up" to speak on the result and that he helped run the campaign, see this from the Mail:

He said: 'It's a grim result. Our vote was squeezed very, very badly.
'But it's the same as happened in the Winchester by-election a few years ago, where we were reduced to 1.7 per cent under Tony Blair, but he went on to win the next general election.

I remember going to Winchester with Mr Salter for that by-election. The Labour candidate was Patrick Davies, a very good man, unlike Basher McKenzie, and Salter and I spent the afternoon in the pub. The winner was the LibDem Mark Oaten, not a man you'd want near your coffee table I fancy.

Howarth (prop. Public Impact Ltd).
